In 1996 we lost my cousin George C. Scott to senseless gunviolence. I had no words for a while. There was sooo much I felt and trying to understand it all was like going down the rabbit hole into a deep depression. I remember seeing the faces on the Oakland Tribune of all the African American men we lost in Oakland in 2002 to senselessly gun violence. My heart ached for my people because the problem was beyond what most all of us saw. Truth is “hurt people hurt people”. We need healing, and at that time I committed myself to writing healing music.
