Songbirds Shuffle - Scared
Song: Scared by Jeremy Zucker
Background: Amelia is pregnant with Scout and it is time for the first appointment.
Ever since her talk with Bailey, her mind was spiraling. She couldn’t stop thinking about all that could be wrong with her baby, the picture of Christopher now at the forefront of her mind and she was unable to make it disappear. She didn’t think, no she knew she wouldn’t be able to handle if anything was wrong even the tiniest thing. She couldn’t go through all that pain again and she knew she wasn’t alone this time and the probability what happened to Christopher happening again was slim to none but feeling in her stomach wouldn’t go away and her hands wouldn’t stop fidgeting no matter how hard she tried to make them stop.
She didn’t know if she could look Link in the eye if anything was wrong with their baby or peanut as he liked to call them. He was so in love with them and they hadn’t even met yet, I mean the man turned his whole world around for her, for them. He spent nearly every night over at the house, talking to her belly and researching everything he possibly could about pregnancy and birth. He ordered about a million different things a week but his new favorite topic was the best green juice for growth, he would make one every morning for her to try, changing the recipe almost daily. In full honesty they were all disgusting but she drank them and smiled because the look on his face as he waited for her verdict was just too cute to disappoint. He cared so much about the both of them and she knew the pain he would go through if anything was wrong. She’d been there herself and she didn’t know if he would be able to survive it. It would break him, it would break the both of them.
Nonetheless less she knew she had to make the appointment, and she knew Link would want to be there, she wanted Link to be there that is, so she texted him to meet at the coffee cart. It was one of their favorite places to meet in the hospital because it usually meant an energy boost but Link had been very particular about her coffee consumption recently so she just hoped she could arrive first so she could grab even a small decaf coffee.
. . .
When she got there she sighed a breath of relief because Link was nowhere to be found. She almost had the coffee in her hand when she felt hands wrap around her waist and she knew exactly who they belonged to. Shit she thought, she knew she would be in trouble.
“I’ll take that” Link smiled as he reached over Amelias shoulder to grab the coffee, waiting till the walked away a bit before exposing what was behind his back, “This is for you” he handed her that disgusting green bottle.
“Thanks” she smiled trying her best to hide her disappoint and by the look on his face it was working. “Where did you get this?” Referring the drink she so desperately wanted to throw away.
“Oh I stocked the fridge up with them for you” he smiled and inched his hand around her waste “Now you and peanut can have one whenever you guys want” he kissed her forehead as they walked towards their bench.
“Yay” she cheered a little bit to sarcastically, “um do you want to go to my appointment with me, I haven’t scheduled it yet but Carina said she was pretty open today.” She changed the subject before he had time to question what she meant by her earlier comment.
“Of Course,” he smiled before placing he hand on her stomach and just pausing to absorb the moment, “nothing would make me happier” he looked back at her and pecked her lips softly.
“Okay then, 7?” Her voice stutters a little as her earlier thoughts rush back into her mind, “I have a surgery but I should be done by then” she rushes through the sentence before trying to get up, Link rests his hand on her leg trying to stop her.
“Everything will be okay” he whispers at her “I’m here you know.” He tried to find her eyes but she wouldn’t let him, she just kept looking towards the hospital as she fidgeted with her hands. Something was defiantly wrong.
“I know, I’ll text you the room number” she smiled before heading into the hospital for real this time. She knew Link was there for her, he always was, but she really didn’t want to get into the details. He was living in this happy little bubble and she didn’t want to pop it with her fears. She didn’t want him to be scared until it was absolutely necessary. She knew is irrational but she thought this was the best way to handle her worries, alone.
. . .
While Amelia was dealing with her emotions alone Link was left completely in the dark, well maybe not completely. It was having a flashlight in a cave, he wasn’t lost but he would never really have the full picture no matter how many times he searched around. He didn’t know what to do, all he knew was that he wanted to be there for her no matter how messy it got so he decided to text someone he thought would be able to help.
Link: Hey can we meet at Joes around 5ish? I need some advice.
When he looked down at his phone again he had his response, just a little thumbs up and his plans were set into to motion.
. . .
It was around 5:30 when Link made his way into Joes and it was packed for a weekday. The interns were laughing in the corner but Link just zoned out their playful screeches as he made his way to the bar. “Thank you for meeting me?” He smiled as he tapped the man in front of him on the back.
“No problem dude. What did you need?” Jackson smiled back at the man before passing one of the drinks towards him. Link just waved it off.
“Maybe next time? We have an appointment with Carina later” he smiled as he tried to work out the best way to get into the conversation, he decided it was probably best to just get straight into it. “When April was pregnant with Harriet what was it like? You know after your first kid,” by the look on Jacksons face Link may have revealed that he knew something he wasn’t suppose to. “Sorry to overstep, Jo told me. You know for someone who hid a whole identity she isn’t that good keeping secrets,” the pair laughed a little at the reality of the statement before Jackson cleared his throat and started his response.
“It was hard, especially for April. She was so worried that something was going to happen again. She avoided a lot of it at the start and I don’t think she ever stopped worrying until she has Harriet in her arms. I don’t either of us stopped worrying until then,” he paused a little at the memory before bringing his attention back to Link, “Why is something wrong with Amelia and the baby?” He worried.
“No, knock on wood. She is just so worried that something is going to happen and I feel completely useless, she won’t talk to me” he explains “I just don’t know how to help her.”
“Just be there, she is going to break at some point and you want there when that happens, she’ll want you there trust me,” he puts his hand on Links shoulder trying to comfort him “In the mean time, want to play some darts? Get out of your head for a bit”
. . .
The pair was on their 3rd round of darts when Link phone buzzed with the room number he was suppose to meet Amelia at. He said goodbye the crowd that had formed around the tw0 before he headed towards the exit. Jackson followed his saying that he should probably check up on some of his patients but he really just wanted to escape from the crowd that was forming around them, a crowd that mostly consisted of gawking and slightly inebriated interns trying to impress the pair.
“How you feeling?” Jackson questioned the ortho surgeon
“I just don’t want Amelia to feel alone” he admitted “I just want everything to be okay with both of them.”
“I know the feeling” Jackson says as he reaches for the door handle “Good Luck”
. . .
It was 15 minutes into their appointment when Amelia started to get worried. She knew Link, she knew he wouldn’t miss this for the world but he still wasn’t here. She insisted on waiting for him saying he was probably in surgery but then 15 minutes turned into 30 and that idea was getting less and less likely. She had texted, called and paged him and still no word. Maybe she a little to distant and this was his payback, okay that probably wasn’t the case but she couldn’t really think of anything else that would explain his absence at least anything she wanted to think about.
After the 35 minute mark Amelia gave into Carina reasoning and decided to start the appointment, without Link. She was terrified and all she wanted was to hold Links hand, she just want him here no matter what Carina said. She didn’t want to be alone again.
She stayed quiet as Carina applied the gel to her stomach and her silence continued as she looked for their baby. It was like she was holding her breath and wouldn’t let go until she knew that they were okay. Then she heard their heartbeat and one weight was lifted off her shoulders.
“Okay Amelia would you like to see you healthy baby boy” Carina adjusted the screen so Amelia could now see.
“Healthy” Amelia breathed out and then the other word hit her. “Boy” she smiled out and the tears she had been holding in finally escaped.
“Yep you have a healthy baby boy and by the looks of this he is around 28 weeks” she smiled not knowing the bomb she just dropped.
And it was with those words that Amelia became at little grateful that Link wasn’t there, “28 weeks” she repeated hoping she didn’t her the doctor correctly.
“Yep 28 weeks” she smiled before leaving the neurosurgeon alone in the room.
. . .
When Amelia exited the consult room and made her way down to the pit she wasn’t prepared for what she was going to see. The pit was complete chaos and as if it couldn’t get worse all the patients seemed to be doctors, interns but doctors nonetheless. They were definitely going to be short staff so Amelia pushed away her growing issue and went to work.
Her first patient was Schmit or glasses as Meredith liked to call him and given by his ramblings, he didn’t seem to be in too much pain but she still needed to check him out.
“Dr.Shepherd” he exclaimed as Amelia approached, “I’m so glad you’re here because I’m pretty sure I have something wrong with my head,” he didn’t seem like he was going to stop on his own so Amelia decided to do it for him.
“Okay Schmit, let me make that conclusion,” she said before doing her examine, “Well you should spend more time on Neuro because you are completely okay, but I still keep you for observation,” she was about to walk away when she heard the conversation between the two interns behind her.
“Yah, the car came out of nowhere and hit Dr.Lincoln,” Helm whispered towards Levi.
“Helm what did you say?,” her head shooting up at the mention of Link.
“Um Dr.Lincoln, he is kinda stuck under the car down at Joes,” Helm tried to explain to the Neurosurgeon but got the just that she wasn’t paying attention anymore so she stopped, “I thought they would have told you.”
“Ya you would think” was all she could get out before she exited the OR and basically sprinted to Joes. There was a lot of things she thought would go wrong today but this was definitely not it. In full honesty she didn’t know what was happened all she knew was that she needed to get to Link.
. . .
“Jackson” she screamed as she arrived to the scene and she honestly doesn’t know how she didn’t notice the mess sooner. There was 3 different fire trucks, 2 ambulances, and a car literally through the walls of Joes. “Where is he?” She was completely out of breath when she got to the plastic surgeon but she needed to get these words out, she needed to know. “Where is Link, is he okay? Oh god please tell me he is okay” she continued to huff out with her mind racing a mile a minute. She couldn’t see him, she couldn’t touch him and she couldn’t hear his voice.
“Amelia you have to breathe” Jackson tried his best to calm the woman in front of him down.
“I’ll breathe when I know where he is,”
“That’s fair I guess” he put his hand on her back to study her breaths, “Can you at least sit down, think about your baby, think about what Link would say” and with that reminder she followed the surgeons orders and sat down on the curb located right next to the pair. “Link got the worse of it, he is passed out but he is alive. He looks like he’ll be fine they just need to get him out,” he began to explain and he watched the neurosurgeons eyes move frantically around.
“Can I see him?” She questioned back towards him, her eyes wide.
“Not yet, they are almost done getting him out I think,” she didn’t like that and he could tell so he continued, “How was your appointment?” Her head turned towards him, confused. “Link told me, wouldn’t stop going on about it actually. he really cares about you guys you know?”
“I know trust me, it can be annoying sometimes but I know,” she laughs at all his stupid activities, “he already got them matching baseball jerseys, I mean he doesn’t even know the gender but he got him clothes”
“Oh yah, it’s a boy,” she smiled again at the ultrasound, she had the picture in her pocket but showing Jackson would mean telling him how old the baby is and even if he wouldn’t know a difference, she didn’t want it to accidentally split out. “A perfect little boy” she rests her hand on her belly “My perfect little boy.” Jackson knew why she was so focused on the health of her baby, she reminded him of April in some ways.
She was so focused on her baby that she might not have noticed the newly founded commotion surrounding them. “It’s time” she overheard the firefighters talking.
“Are you talking about Link” she exclaimed only to be met with two confused looks
“The guy under the car is her boyfriend,” Jackson explains “Are you talking about him?” He reiterates Amelias question.
“Yes” they said in unison before turning around back to building.
“Can I come in? Please” she pleaded hoping they would give into her, it didn’t work.
“How about we just wait in the ambulance for him?” Jackson tried to compromise, “then you won’t leave his side” he tried to redirect her but she just stood still “They got him Amelia, trust me” he pushed he a little again and this time she listened, allowing Jackson to help her into the ambulance as they waited for Link.
. . .
What happened next was a blur, well what happened in the next few hours was. The next thing she could remember was waking up in Links hospital room the next morning to Nico and Jackson rounding.
“Good to know you slept, I’ll page Carina to give you a check-up” Jackson smiled down at Amelia.
“Just tell me how he is?” She looked up at the pair, knowing it couldn’t be anything real serious if it was just plastics and ortho rounding.
“Dr.Lincoln had three broken ribs and a fracture on his lower left femur. I fixed the breaks so now he is in recovery,” he pauses to allow Amelia to let out the breath she had been holding since they walked in, “He should wake up any time now” he reaffirmed her before leaving her and Jackson alone in the room.
“Thank you for last night Jackson” Amelia smiled up at him
“Don’t mention it,” he turned around to leave them before making sure Amelia understood, “and I’m going to page Carina, just to be safe.”
“Thank you” she refocused her attention back onto Link just waiting for him to wake up. He needed to wake up, she knew he would but there was still a part of her that expected the worse.
It wasn’t until Carina was finished wrapping up her examine that she heard Link move around, waiting till Carina exited to start talking. “How’s our peanut,” he softly smiling towards Amelia, he wanted her to know that he was okay.
“He is perfect,” she grabbed onto his hand and made sure to emphasize the part of the sentence she knew Link would be most interested in.
“That’s perfect,” he smiled as he mustered the strength to put his hand on her belly, “Wait did you say he? It’s a boy. We are having a boy?”
“We are having a boy.” She confirmed, deciding it was best to not tell just yet. Her reasoning was that he needed a little bit of happy right now but in full honesty she didn’t want to lose him, she already experienced enough of the for the day. She was going to tell him just not now.
“Come over here so I can kiss you,” he smiled at her and at this moment everything was perfect.
Thank you so much for reading and I know its been awhile since I’ve written anything. At first I just couldn’t muster up the inspiration to do it and then when I finally did…. my computer broke. Typical. Anyway I just got my new computer and the first thing I did was write this and it felt good. I think I’m finally back in the writing mood so hopefully there will be more to come soon. I’m sorry if this was a bit all over the place I just finished my like 4th greys rewatch so I wasn’t exposed to that “feeling” when writing. As always leave any ideas or thoughts you have below. I’m always up for new ideas whether it be for this story, another, or a one shot. Don’t be afraid to reach out it truly makes my day when I see people enjoying my work. Thank you so much and hopefully you’ll hear from me soon.
