the day y'all realize overcoming your biases and stop being bigoted assholes is actually your own responsibility, and stop expecting minorities to hold your hands, and the days white people actually fucking do something instead of crying about oh how ‘x identity was mean to you that one time and now you’re scared’, we’ll actually be able to progress.
white fragility has never been our fault, our struggle or our problem. work that shit out yourselves and stop expecting people to spoon-feed shit to you. google is fucking free. there are white people who have done the work and are actively educating their fellow brethren but you refuse to utilize that.
so many anti-racist texts and media was fucking handed to y'all last year, so many anti-imperialist theory, so many anti-capitalist works but yet you’re still here crying because a minority doesn’t have the patience with your ass like we’re not fucking human beings. y'all need to grow the fuck up and stop treating us as something to be consumed from. especially when minorites who do take the time out of their days to hold your hands y'all don’t even fucking compensate them.
You’re sitting at a cafe with your friend when suddenly a woman walks in with a toy poodle in her purse. The manager at the counter informs her “I’m sorry, but we do not allow dogs”. She replies with a heavy sigh and a “She’s a service dog. She can come with me”. Not knowing much about service dog law, and worrying about getting sued for asking further questions, he sits this woman down at a booth. There, she promptly unzips her purse and places the dog on the booth seat next to her. When the woman’s food comes out, the little dog begs and she feeds her bits off her plate. This dog is not public access trained, and proceeds to bark at those who walk by. This dog is a nuisance and causes many in the restaurant to complain. The manager cannot do anything but inform the unhappy customers that this is a service dog, so he can’t ask her to leave. In the end, it’s the customers who end up leaving.
Now I walk in with my highly trained service dog pressed against my leg in a perfect heel position, and I’m quickly bombarded by the manager telling me “No dogs! No dogs! We ALL know what happened last time”. Confused, I tell him “This is my medical alert and medical response service dog. Her right to accompany me is protected under federal law.” With a sigh, he seats me at a table far away from others where my dog promptly tucks under my feet, out of sight. When my food arrives my dog is still tucked tightly under the table because she knows she’s not supposed to eat when she’s on duty. She stays there ignoring those who walk past for the remainder of my meal. When we leave, a woman by the door exclaims “Woah, I didn’t know there was a dog here!”
See the difference?
Scenario number two occurs at a local grocery store when a man decides to bring his certified emotional support animal into the store with him. Upon entering he flashes a fancy ID card and certification papers. This dog is not as unruly as the first, but he still forges ahead of his handler, sniffs the food on display, and may seek attention from those who walk past. You find this dog adorable, and when he and his owner walk past you ask to pet him. The owner says yes and explains how all he had to do was go online, register his dog, and a few weeks later they sent him a vest, ID card, and certification papers.
Now I pull into the same grocery store. I’m in a rush to get an ingredient for a dish I’m making so I hurry into the store with my service dog next to me. I’m quickly stopped by a manager who demands to see my service dog’s certification card. Remember, this is NOT required by law, and most real service dog teams don’t have them. After 15 minutes of trying to educate, pulling up the ADA website on my phone, back and forth bickering, and drawing more of a crowd than I want to describe… I’m finally allowed in. I grab my ingredient, stand in line (where my service dog obediently moves between my legs to make space for those around me), and I get bombarded by people asking to pet my dog. I explain that she’s working, she has a very important job to do, and she’s not allowed to be pet while on duty. People walk away grumbling and complaining about how rude I was when other handlers like the man they met earlier allow their dog to be pet.
Moral of the story? Fake service dogs create real problems. The ones who are impacted the most are the true service dog handlers who rely on their dogs every day to help mitigate their disability. How would you feel if everywhere you went, you couldn’t make it 10 feet in the door because people were asking you questions? Imagine how much time that would take out of your already hectic day. Businesses lose customers because word gets out that there are unruly dogs in their store, customers become misinformed and start thinking some of these behaviors are okay, some people even start to believe the lies that anyone can just register their dog online and make him a service dog. The result? MORE fake service dogs. MORE real problems.
I will reblob this until I die because it’s one of the few things that constantly genuinely infuriates me
Except this is kinda bullshit. In the first scenario, the dog was being disruptive and therefore it was perfectly fine to ask them to leave no matter how “real” or “fake” the dog was.
Also you do know people are allowed to let others pet their service dog, right? I have an assistance dog, he loves people, and I love tiny positive interactions where we can make someone’s day better. If they ask nicely, I’ll happily let him say hello. It is not my fault if some asshole doesn’t understand consent and thinks it’s a blanket yes for every dog.
It’s the responsibility of businesses to know their local disability law, rights and obligations. It’s not an optional extra thing they can slack on. Like, obviously don’t fake a service dog, but the blame really should be on businesses. Hunting for fakes is ultimately so unhelpful.
Some replies to this post to show how attitudes like op’s actively encourage gatekeeping that prevents ~real~ disabled people from accessing the assistance and services that they need just because their service dog doesn’t look like what people think service dogs are.
So many of these people have a fundamental misunderstanding of what service dogs are (“I think only certain breeds are allowed for service duty”) but still think that they should have the right to confront “fake” handlers or demand that disabled people should have to jump through hoops set up by a violently ableist government in order to have an accessibility aid!
Yeah actually lets address all of these because they’re absolutely bullshit as well.
1. Yeah making things harder and less accessible for disabled people sounds awesome. Also if you throw a treat in front of my dog he’s gonna eat it and I’m gonna be like nice free treat
2. Dogs are living animals. Sometimes they’re sick and have accidents indoors. Sometimes handlers make an error in judgement and try to work or train a dog that isn’t ready for that environment and hasn’t fully generalised all indoor places as non potty areas. It happens, most people I know will try to clean it up as best as they can but also inform the store.
You don’t have to confront anyone, if a dog is being disruptive, you’re allowed to ask them to leave. Simple.
3. Sorry someone asked you where you got a specific piece of gear I guess? Or that people don’t have to jump through hoops to buy gear and it’s available locally at a place they’ll probably be visiting a bunch already?
4. Some breeds are more likely to succeed as service dogs, and it’s smart to choose one of these to stack the odds in your favour (labs, golden, poodle) - But there is no legal requirement and literally any breed or mix can do service work. Tiny SDs from companion breeds often do amazing work
5. Because disabled people already have to jump through a million hoops just trying to exist. Because it’d make an accessibility aid a lot harder to get for tons of us. Because an ableist system cannot be trusted to properly do any kind of test or certification system
6. The laws we have are perfectly fine, businesses just need to know them and apply them. Again, if the dog is disruptive, they can and should be told to leave. Why on earth is that not enough?
7. Gear is expensive. Maybe they’re using what they have until they can get something else. Also a brief sniff is a non issue? It’s a living animal, not a robot. Very small issue they could be still training
8. Small service dogs being carried is perfectly fine.
9. Another shithead thinking disabled people should have to pay for the privilege of being allowed to have their medical equipment with them in public
Lots of ignorance and being judgy for no reason woof
Ramadan is coming up, so:
- Ramadan is the ninth month in the Hijri calendar.
- It’s considered Holy because it is believed that the Quran was revealed during this month.
- Muslims fast from sunrise (Fajr) to sunset (Maghreb) every day. That means no food, water, cigarettes, etc. during this time. Good deeds are also believed to be “worth more” during this month.
- No, it is not “extreme”; Muslims fast to get closer to God and to become more compassionate. Fasting for several hours a day occasionally has also been proven to be good for your health.
- Muslims who cannot fast should not fast. If you’re sick (or need to take medication), travelling long distance, or menstruating then you shouldn’t fast. Different scholars have different opinions on whether old people and pregnant women should fast, but if you are not able to fast (i.e. would cause you or your body harm) then you absolutely should not.
- If you see someone who you think should be fasting but isn’t just don’t mention it? It’s not your place, and it’s really awkward having to explain to someone you barely know that you’re on your period (totally not based on personal experience).
- “Have a bite! I won’t tell ;)” is not cute. Your friend is fasting for themselves and for their faith. They do not need “saving”.
- “Can I eat in front of my fasting friend?”
probably best if you just ask them if it bothers them.
- Iftar is what Muslims call the meal you break your fast with and Suhoor/Sehri is the meal Muslims will have late at night or very early in the morning to prepare for the next day.
- Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr when Ramadan ends.
going straight to tumblr after learning that prince philip finally died is like hearing the latest gossip in your victorian parlor room and then leaving the house to find your nearest paper boy screaming “hot off the press! prince is finally dead!” just to confirm
Autistic Person: “What’s wrong with this?”
What Autistic Person Means: “I trust that there’s most likely something wrong with this, but I want more information about what. That way, I can understand the effect it has on people instead of just blindly following a rule.”
What Neurotypical Person Hears: “I refuse to believe that there could possibly be anything wrong with this. Please spend the next few minutes berating me and never actually explain what’s wrong with it so I’m still just as confused as before.”
I’ve read all kinds of posts both from writers and readers lamenting about comments on fic. Authors are upset when they don’t get any, readers don’t know what kinds of comments to leave, etc. And it finally clicked in my brain why I think a lot of people don’t bother writing comments.
And this is what it boils down to:
Writers do not want praise.
We just want to talk about our story.
I can’t speak for everyone obviously - but I think the majority of writers don’t care so much for the “omg you’re a brilliant writer!!” comments as much as we just want to hear your thoughts on the story. Even if it’s just your thoughts as you’re reading of “oooh x happened! I can’t believe y said this! What’s going to happen now that z has happened?!” We literally just want to talk about what we’ve written like you would with a friend about a tv show. We’re not out here demanding praise like some entitled narcissist.
While praising our writing skills or writing style is appreciated, it doesn’t need to be said on every fic and every chapter that you read. If you regularly comment on someone’s work that’s telling enough that you like our technique. Readers shouldn’t feel pressured to have to praise a writer’s abilities every time they want to comment.
In the grand scheme of things, talking about the fic/chapter is actually more helpful to us writers instead of spewing praise. It’s the same with artwork. As nice as it is that people tell me “wow your art is so pretty!” it’s a LOT more useful to me to get comments like “I love their expressions!” or “the lighting on this is gorgeous!” because then I know WHAT people are liking about it. If no one ever comments on my backgrounds, I now know what to improve. If most people comment on liking the expressions, I now know the strong points of my art and can use it to my advantage to make even better art in the future.
The same goes for fic. If multiple people tell me they liked a certain part of the story I now know that things similar to that are a hit. It’s feedback I can use to improve the story and give my readers more of what they want. Without that I have no idea what they like about the fic.
Talking with a writer about their story also gives them inspiration!! Nothing gets us more in the mood to work on a fic than to have people wanting to talk about it. A lot of times just talking about one of my fics with someone will give me that push to continue working on it. Getting a comment that just says “great chapter” or “you’re a great writer” doesn’t do much to motivate us to continue that particular fic. But if you talk about the story and the characters it gives us motivation to continue working on it, may even give us ideas for future chapters. I would hope that those of you with “comment anxiety” find this approach so much easier than trying to praise the writer every time you read.
So that fic the author hasn’t updated in forever that you’re dying to read? Talk to them about the fic and the elements of the story! It will make the writer want to talk to you about it and will get their mind thinking about it, hopefully inspiring them to continue where they left off. Fics that are left in silence are more likely to be abandoned or even deleted because nothing feels worse than putting your heart into a story to have no one say anything about it.
TLDR; Writers do not want praise, we just want to talk with our readers about the story itself, and these are the kinds of comments that inspire us to keep writing more.
the french senate has voted so that no girl below the age of 18 can wear hijab or niqab in public and that no hijab-wearing muslim mothers can accompany children on school field trips. furthermore, the french government is moving to ban halal slaughter of poultry by july 2021 on the grounds this method of slaughter has been deemed “less humane” than standard french practice.
primarily white “feminists” who otherwise advocate for the bodily autonomy have either been silent or explicitly supported the first piece of legislation. here is a change.org petition created to oppose the hijab/niqab ban. as a reminder, when you go to sign, do not select the option to donate: none of the funds go to the cause. when you’re signing, use numbers from 75001 to 75021 (french zip codes) because international/fake zip codes will invalidate your signature (via zhongsliang on twitter).
i’ll be adding more information/links as i get them so please check the original post for the latest updates!

“I’ve searched my conscience, and I can’t for the life of me find any justification for this, and I simply cannot accept that there are on every story two equal and logical sides to an argument”
I… have to admit i was kind of gobsmacked to realize that’s the borat guy, but his point is eloquent and good so keep kicking ass, dude.
Despite being known best for his comedy characters, Sacha Baron Cohen is a graduate of Cambridge University, where he earned a history degree after writing his undergraduate thesis on the American civil rights movement. His mother’s family were German Jews and his father’s family were Ashkenazi Jews; he is also the grandson of a Holocaust survivor. He understands this issue all too well.
People really need to realise that “media can affect real life” doesn’t mean “this character does bad things so people will read that and start doing bad things” and actually means “ideas in fiction especially stereotypes about minority groups can affect how the reader views those groups, an authors implicit prejudices can be passed on to readers”

compare the backlash lil nas x is recieving for a 3 minute music video vs. supernatural running for 15 years, having a cameo from every biblical character, making Thee Christian God bisexual, killing that Bisexual Christian God™, replacing him with lucifer’s son, having a gay angel, and on and on and on. compare his THREE MINUTE VIDEO to lucifer, the show that has ran on for five years, about the redemption of a bisexual satan. this is about race. what they’re doing to him is because he’s Black. white people get to do whatever the fuck they want with Christian mythology and no one blinks an eye.
Do not come on my posts with “Black Women Are Superhuman Beings Who Can Handle Anything” takes. That’s a dangerous and reductive rhetoric rife with misogynoir. No, black women cannot take more negative and harmful attacks than other women can. Black women are not primed to withstand more attacks and harassment than women of other races. Stop. That is horrifying. Black women deserve grace, compassion, and a soft place to rest, not constant burdens.
