Here it is! The first writing I’ve done for Inktober 2018. It’s rather long so, I’m sorry for that. Enjoy!
“Don’t open the door to the den” she said. “Your anniversary gift is in there.” I smiled and sat, waiting patiently as she made dinner for us both, and it smelled heavenly, as it usually did. I flipped on the television to try and take my mind off of my grumbling stomach but, there wasn’t much on. Scrolling through the television guide, I resigned myself to simply watch How I Married An Axe Murderer. It was a wonderfully fun movie written and starring Mike Myers before he went crazy with Austin Powers and Shrek. His jokes weren’t overdone and there was a slight charm to the movie.
As I watched, it made me chuckle. Even though I had seen it dozens of times previously, this time had me laughing a bit more than usual due to the fact that I was recently married myself. My wife, Linda and I had a beautiful but, small wedding. Only some close members of each of our families, along with some close friends had been present. The best part, though was the bachelor party the night before.
My buddy, Jay had taken me out to a strip club, as is tradition in most places and we had a blast. Of course, my wife couldn’t know that I was looking at other women the night before we were to get married so, we told her that we had gone shooting and other “manly” things. In reality, however, we got up to so much debauchery that I think even the Devil might have objected. Long story short, though, that night, I had sex with three different strippers.
But, this wasn’t really the first time I had been unfaithful, if I’m to be truly honest. I had a long-standing “friends with benefits” thing going with the hot secretary, Jenni. I can’t count how many times we banged on the copier in that office. Some guys might feel uncomfortable boning chicks on the side, especially when they’re newly weds but, not me. It wasn’t really a change for me, considering I had been cheating on Linda pretty much since we first started dating. I didn’t see a reason not to. I was an adventurous guy and I didn’t want to give that up for some relationship. I’m a man, I have needs. It’s not my fault I’m an alpha male, I was just built this way. That being said, I’ve always known that it would destroy Linda if she ever found out so, I keep it a secret.
Just as I finished reminiscing with the movie still going in the background, I heard Linda tell me, “dinner’s ready!” Since we’ve been married, I’ve noticed Linda let herself go a little. She didn’t wear makeup or skimpy outfits as much around the house. She even looked like she might be getting a double chin which makes sense considering she told me yesterday that she gained four pounds. I love her dearly but, four pounds makes a difference.
Tonight was different, however. She was wearing that sexy pink dress I bought her months ago and her hair and makeup were perfect, almost as if we were going out on a date or something. I sat down at the table and tucked a napkin into my shirt collar, fork and knife in hand as she placed in front of me a plate filled to the brim with my favorite: steak and potatoes with sauteed vegetables. I inhaled deeply, savoring the delicious smell. I looked up at her and smiled in thanks.
“I really hope you enjoy it, honey. I worked extra hard on it for you tonight,” Linda told me with a faint smile. She went to the opposite end of the table and started eating without me. Not to be left behind, I chuckled and started digging in. The first bite was wonderful, as usual. The second bite was a little bitter but, still great. It wasn’t until the fourth bite of steak and potatoes that I noticed something was a little… off.
“Tastes just a little different than normal, hon. Did you try a new recipe or something?” I coughed a little and took a sip of water. Something definitely wasn’t right. I was finding it hard to breathe.
“Oh, you know how I love to switch it up,” she told me with a candid smile. “I added a special new ingredient.” She held up a yellow box with a dead rat on the front. My smile turned sour. My chewing slowed as I realized why the taste was off. I looked at my wife with wide eyes as she came over to me.
“You really thought you could get away with it, didn’t you?” Her voice was starting to echo as I heard it. “You really think I was so stupid, that I never knew you were unfaithful? You put too much faith in yourself. You’d always come home reeking of perfume. I’d always find lipstick stains on your tighty-whities. You were sloppy, you and that whore. What was her name again?” I looked up at Linda as my lungs seemed to not want to draw in air. I gasped in response to her question.
“That’s right! Jenni! Well, after I planned this little dinner for us, I thought you might like a special guest!” As she said this, she strolled over to the door leading to the den. I had almost forgotten, my anniversary gift. Linda flung the doors open triumphantly, as if she was the showcase lady on The Price is Right. Sure enough, there was Jenni, strapped to a chair but, she was different somehow. My vision had started to cloud now as I choked for air. I tried to stand to get closer to Jenni, but I fell and crawled my way over to her, wondering what was wrong, wondering why she was staring so blankly. Then I saw why.
Her neck was red, almost bleeding with harsh rope burns all along it. Her skin looked devoid of any color but gray and her eyes had started turning a sick, milky white. I gasped more in horror, wanting to scream. Linda simply smiled at me. My gasps came more frequently. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move, I could only lay there, staring up at my beautiful wife and hearing the last sounds that would ever grace my ears. “Happy anniversary, hubby.”
