I should be sleeping, but brain decided it wanted to think about blood proteins/sugars and ghostly equivalents….
However, sleep deprivation is the bigger concern, so let’s see if this train of thought can continue when I wake up.
For reference, the two main ones people know about are the ABO and Rh factor.
So, lets see if I can put thoughts into words now that I’m more awake.
For humans, our body produces a bunch of different sugars and proteins that helps our body recognize our cells as belonging to us. For blood, the big 2 are the ABO gene and the Rh faction.
This gives us these main blood types in humans:
As a side note, there are others such as Bombay and Golden, which are very rare. They cannot be transfused with other blood types.
Also, there 40+ other proteins/sugars that can trigger immunological reactions during blood transfusion that need to be screened prior to a transfusion. And, currently, every single artificial blood that has been created in an attempt to reduce the need for blood donations are either toxic in humans or just aren’t good enough to be useful. And after a quick double check, there are currently no approved artificial blood products for human use in the US
Something very interesting about blood, is that there is some evidence to suggest the antibodies produced to protect humans from foreign blood types also help protect people from some illnesses. Type A seems to have a higher resistance to Smallpox. Type B with Plague, and Type O with both of those and possibly Malaria. People with AB blood type have fewer antibodies, and if this information is correct, helps explain why AB is so rare.
So…… after my info dump.
There’s a lot of variation in the Phandom regarding how ghosts work. So, there are my thoughts on the matter.
If you have a ghost that is a dead person, I’m going to make the assumption that there is some equivalent to the ABO and RH factor. Since I flipflop all the time regarding ectoplamic composition, I’ll just call it a ‘mirror image’ of what’s seen in a living human. If this is the case, you’d treat ghost blood basically the same as you’d treat human blood, at least regarding how to handle transfusions and stuff.
Some might call it anti-blood. I’d shy away from that. Why? Well, in physics, antimatter and matter don’t like each other and are supposed to violently cancel each other out if they touch. We know that things from the Real World and the GZ can interact just fine without that happening in the DP universe, so it’s not antimatter. Dark matter, Strange matter, and Mirror matter are up for debate with someone much more familiar with those than I am.
Now, when we’re talking about ghosts that are theorized to be created from animals, you’ll actually see something similar. Animal blood types work similarly to human ones with variations unique to the species.
Ghosts that aren’t entities created from the dead… well, that’s where things get tricky. I’d still say that there’s some sort of similar system, but it might be too different to be able to be transfused between ones that are dead folk. That would actually make some sense.
Anyways, that’s my sleep deprived thoughts on ghosts and blood. Feel free to ask questions because I have a lot of weird information bouncing around my head regarding blood.
