Gerhard Richter, Betty, 1988
Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis
Gerhard Richter based this painting on a 1978 photograph he took of his daughter Betty when she was 11 years old. The girl’s position is partially posed, but also spontaneous as she turns away from the viewer. Richter combines the softness of her hair with the precise rendering of her flowered jacket in a work that blurs the distinctions between painting and photography. The formal elegance and psychological ambiguity evident here make Betty one of Richter’s most captivating works.
