Microsoft has a DRM-locked ebook store that isn’t making enough money, so they’re shutting it down and taking away every book that every one of its customers acquired effective July 1.
Customers will receive refunds.
This puts the difference between DRM-locked media and unencumbered media into sharp contrast. I have bought a lot of MP3s over the years, thousands of them, and many of the retailers I purchased from are long gone, but I still have the MP3s. Likewise, I have bought many books from long-defunct booksellers and even defunct publishers, but I still own those books.
When I was a bookseller, nothing I could do would result in your losing the book that I sold you. If I regretted selling you a book, I didn’t get to break into your house and steal it, even if I left you a cash refund for the price you paid.
People sometimes treat me like my decision not to sell my books through Amazon’s Audible is irrational (Audible will not let writers or publisher opt to sell their books without DRM), but if you think Amazon is immune to this kind of shenanigans, you are sadly mistaken. My books matter a lot to me. I just paid $8,000 to have a container full of books shipped from a storage locker in the UK to our home in LA so I can be closer to them. The idea that the books I buy can be relegated to some kind of fucking software license is the most grotesque and awful thing I can imagine: if the publishing industry deliberately set out to destroy any sense of intrinsic, civilization-supporting value in literary works, they could not have done a better job.
If you’ve got an ereader and want to actually own your books, I heartily recommend using cailbre to scrape the DRM off and so you can backup the files.

So much of this. A friend posted a pic on Facebook once that was very inspirational and positive, of a kid with two prosthetic legs who was running in (presumedly) a special Olympics race, but the caption was, “Your Excuse Is Invalid” and I hated her for a hot second for thinking this was a healthy thing to post. Pure rage. Fuck anyone who thinks this way, that an example of one moment of overcome obstacles means there are no real obstacles, just losers making excuses.
Toxic Positivity is real and can be pretty gross.
Oh, fuck those inspoporn quotes. I’m physically disabled and quotes like “the only disability is a bad attitudes” are one of the most toxic positivity ideas out there. I spent a large part of my life thinking that if I just worked a little harder, the musculoskeletal damages from cerebral palsy could go away.
I’m so glad for platforms like Tumblr where I can meet a bunch of other autistic and physically disabled people who understand what I’m going through without me infodumping from the start.
It’s one thing to be optimistic and to want to avoid negativity. It’s another thing to ban disabled people from your positivity Facebook groups for suggesting that people with mental illnesses cannot just overcome and rise above because our brains are literally sick.
Not sure of the source, a friend sent me this. I want to staple it to everyone who responds to pain with an exhortation to look on the bright side.
complaining can be constructive!
at least when we make sure we not only identify that there is a problem but we also identify what the problem specifically is and what we could do about it
so quit telling people not to be negative, were negative because theres a valid reason to be angry and will continue to be angry and negative untill things improve
The fact that not only did dream make a song/music video about how not taking your meds is good and will make you happier (terrible message for anyone let alone a young fan base), but also forced an animation team that basically only had experience animating Minecraft to animate something completely different from their usual style in a few weeks with NO pay and there are still people who think he’s not a complete asshole is astounding to me
you wanna know the best part?
i looked into one of the people who is sort of the face of “Phyre Productions”… well, guess what? they’re a 16 year old dream fan!
dream not only DID NOT PAY the people who made the video, FORCE THEM TO WORK ON A SHORT DEADLINE, he also used UNDERAGE FAN LABOR. ON A DEADLINE. TO MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO THAT HE PROFITS FROM.
haha! haha! totally cool!
oh, addendum to this, too: a friend and I also looked into the person who produced the music for him, and guess what? we’re pretty sure he’s underage as well! i’m not sure if he’s a fan, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with him hiring young people to do work for him if he likes their work, but this REEKS of taking advantage of teenagers because they will work for cheap or FREE because they are fans :/
yeeeegh, i have no pleasure in finding out this stuff but im glad i wasnt a fan
i bear no ill will to fans of his is they take this as a sign to walk away quietly, but that offer does not cover the skeevyness of anyone who tries to defend this shit
For those who haven’t heard, this woman in Arkansas was speeding by a slight margin (5 miles) and was flagged to pull over by an officer. She put on her blinker and got into the right most lane, then slowed and put her hazards on, indicating she was looking for a safe place to pull over. This is actually what police departments, and this one specifically, tell people to do. The shoulder on that road was quite narrow, and she was likely waiting to exit the interstate.
Despite this, the officer slowly gains on her and uses a pit maneuver to spin her car out. This sent her (and her unborn child) careening into the median and completely flipping the car. The officer is heard calling for ems in a very calm voice.
From what I can find, the woman is alright, as is her child. She’s looking to pursue legal action against the officer, who has defended his actions by claiming she was driving wildly and swerving. As I’ve seen so far, he is still being paid and on the force.
Can we get him fired?
Details and fact checking: she’s reported to have been clocked going 84mph in a 70 zone (I couldn’t verify if that’s accurate) but had already reduced speed to 60 and put on her hazards when she was hit. The articles I found reported that he hit her roughly two minutes after putting on his lights, and there was no exit she could use before that. She was also two months pregnant.
The specifics don’t really matter in what seems like a ludicrous use of force, but they’re there to paint a full picture.
when i started writing this comic, there were courses on duolingo for klingon and dothraki, fictional languages that are only spoken by characters on television shows who don’t exist, but the course for yiddish, a language spoken by jews – real, living, breathing people – for generations, didn’t exist until april 2021.
in 2017 a jewish employee at the anne frank museum was asked to put a baseball cap over his yarmulke. yeah, you read that right – an employee who worked in the house anne frank and her family hid for two years was asked to hide his judaism when he came into work.
what i’m saying is goyim are trying very hard to pretend jewish people don’t exist anymore, and it’s safer for a man to tattoo a swastika on his face than it is for me to wear a necklace with a symbol of my culture on it.
this may be an Unpopular Opinion (even on tumblr) but like the 8-hour workday is just Too Gotdamn Long
like even sitting in an office for eight hours a day isn’t particularly pleasant (or healthy, as we are beginning to see) but when we’re talking about doing *actual work* for that same amount time it gets pretty fucking brutal
doing literally *anything* (even leisure activities) for eight hours straight tends to be less than enjoyable but when we’re talking about things like construction, landscaping, factory work, and hell, even foodservice and retail, eight hours is a fucking ETERNITY
i might just be a lazy weak-willed bitch but honestly i think i’m not entirely wrong
this was being worked towards by leftist labor unions way back in the day after the time of FDRs new deal. people in the 40s and 50s were already starting to realize that we no longer actually needed an 8 hour work day or even a 5 day work week.
even with the comparatively primitive factory tech of the time we were already creating a huge amount of excess production back then and companies were making massive amounts of profit. So it already stood to reason that companies should either let their employees work less and thus each employee could work a shorter shift without lowering the yearly compensation of each employee, or in cases where businesses provide an active service they would shorten the shift but hire more people to cover the necessary operating time. but of course that would mean less money for people at the top so companies fought back hard and we ended up with nixon’s bullshit and so on and now its considered the norm for us to spend the vast majority of our lives doing work that really just amounts to waste.
The IWW realised this and were fighting for it all the way back in the 1930s. This is a take with a lot of historical and theoretical grounding, OP, so you’re standing in good stead.
I’d also like to add it’s also been studied and scientifically proven that after 6 hours, we have an extremely noticeable drop in productivity. Sweden saw nothing but benefits from a 6-hour work day, including worker productivity, happiness, and half the amount of sick-leave used when applied to nurses.
kinda fucked how the two ‘acceptable’ images of trans men in Online World are ‘he/they soft gentle boi’ and ‘bodybuilder/bear’
you can just kinda be a dude and exist, too. i look like a guy who sells vapes or works in a comics shop or something. its fine. you don’t have to fit a pobular aesthetic and i think that needs to be said more often instead of constantly hyping some kind of weenie consumer queer teenybopper image
so tired of this lich twink
audibly sigh groaned …. we predicted this we fucking predicted it
i need to eat whoever writes these movies and replace them without anyone noticing to save the world from this shit
Congratulations, this is the worst ask I’ve ever gotten
so how about that guardian idiot thinking there was a part in 1984 about tiny trains
wtf? Far was this?
twitter user pixelatedboat posted a joke 1984 quote and some idiot from the guardian thought it was real and actually quoted it in their article that they got paid too much to write
out of all the possible doge pics to come from the Doge Renaissance my favorite ones so far have to be the current trend of doge being like, a young kid in the 90’s and everyone is being nice to them and telling them like super mario 64 tricks and taking them to see the pokemon movie.

Hey rb this!!!
it’s just hard not to think about the fact that in 1915, JRR Tolkien went to war not with but certainly in the same army and many of the same battles as his 3 best school friends, all nicely upper class young men who had never known much loss, and only he and one other came back alive - and a couple decades later, he wrote a book in which 3 nicely upper class young men (and one very excellent gardener) who have never known much loss go to war together, or at least they start out together, and they all come home alive. (Though one cannot bear it, and does not stay.)
What more it wasn’t just losing his friends, he was a commanding officer of a battalion of working class men. All farmers and miners from the same area of Lancashire. He felt affinity for them, but wasn’t allowed to socialize between the ranks due to military protocol and he hated it.
"The most improper job of any man … is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity.“
I don’t think it was even 6 months later that he contracted trench fever and was sent home.
His entire command was wiped out in one charge shortly after, the majority of a whole countryside’s youths slaughtered while he survived. Youths who were brave and steadfast, but thought of as lesser than their superior officers while still being the ones carrying the actual battle. Youths who deserved fellowship, respect, and above all to go home and dance with their own Rosie.
“My Sam Gamgee is indeed a reflection of the English soldier, of the privates and batmen I knew in the 1914 war, and recognised as so far superior to myself”.
TRIES NOT TO CRY
There is a reason Frodo, who represents the English gentry, in the end falls and is caught by Samwise, who represents the common man.
But there is a soldier in Lord of the Rings who does not come back, and I don’t mean Boromir.
I mean the being who was a common hobbit, but who became corrupted by darkness and poison, who’s face is described in ways reminiscent of a gas mask.
The soldier who doesn’t come home, who is poisoned by gas and stress and insanity.
The Lord of the Rings repeatedly stresses the horrors of war. Eowyn’s entire arc is about the truth of warfare versus the way it’s glorified. She starts out glorifying war and combat and soldiers, even when her own brother is telling her war sucks and is terrible. And then in the end, she sees first hand what war does to people.
Aragorn’s entire arc isn’t to be the steadfast hero saving the day, it’s to hold the line in terror and horror and blood while the overlooked folk are the people who save the world. And then, what makes him a king, is not his skill in battle, but his healing hands.
Which then ties into both Eowyn and Faramir’s arcs. Eowyn goes into healing not because she’s a weak and meek woman, but because war is horrible and saving lives is better than taking them. Aragorn is glorified within the text for his healing, and so is Eowyn.
Also, tying into the common man thing, in the movies it’s Faramir but in the books it’s SAMWISE who questions what brings a man so far from home to fight in a war and if he is really so different.
LOTR is anti-war propaganda.
"LOTR is anti-war propaganda”
All good war stories are
my eternal irritation is people who claim they are getting inspiration from LOTR when they write a story in which a chosen one happily goes off to war, succeeds easily as they have plot armor and just trounce those unambiguously bad guys, gets glory and his name praised then retires happily as a hero who got the girl and everything is good now
like, did you not read the story about someone who was in no way a chosen one just a regular dude was thrust into circumstances against his will and vocally hated every minute of it, failed constantly and required the help of his friends because of the horrors he was subjected to and they as well suffered alongside him, tells glory where to shove it and considers honor to be something that asks fools to die for it, then retires to obscurity spending every day thinking about the loss and tragedy while remembering hes one of the lucky ones because he was able to come back to a home that was shattered while he was away in a dark violation that the horrors can follow you home
