Lockdown Diary: Meet Rona
March
15, 2021 marks exactly one year when the earth stood still due to Covid-19
pandemic, the plague that changed our lives in a jiffy. Lives, jobs, and livelihoods
were lost due to this pandemic and we were forced to stay at our home for
months. Hospitals were filled immediately with patients suffering from the
virus that resulted to doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers working
nonstop. Death tolls due to the virus rising rapidly. Fear and anxiety swept
through all of us not knowing if we would be able to survive.
Couple
of months passed by, fear turned to
anger as many of us were out of jobs and losing money each day not only that
but there was food scarcity. Restrictions eased up a little, we were allowed to
leave our houses and go back to work but are forced to wear face masks and face
shields. Death toll still continues to rise and most of the healthcare workers
are exhausted from their work as they have not get proper rest and some are
getting infected by the virus as well. It irks me to see that during these
times there are some people who never took the virus seriously, still living a
“normal”, carefree life, getting so irresponsible. They refrain from wearing
face masks in public, not avoiding social gatherings, not following what their
local health organization advises them to do, etc.
As
what I know about the corona virus is that the virus spreads from person to
person through droplets by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking and the
infection of the virus can range from mild to severe. An infected individual
could show no symptoms at all and can also be negative from the virus but are
carrier of the virus which they can easily transmit the virus to others who
have weaker immune system most especially with senior people. To make matters
worse, new strains of the virus are being discovered and/or identified with
each variant more contagious and some more lethal.
Although, I
am thankful that vaccines are now available as it could help protect us from
the virus but vaccines alone is not enough to beat the virus as these are not
cure for the virus. Also, keep in mind that as of the moment these vaccines are
still on the early stages of development and there are still uncertainties in
them, meaning each vaccine will affect individuals differently, some may show
side effects while some may have none and some may, not end up well.
Having
vaccines available for us does not mean the end of pandemic is near, we need
not ease up our defenses and/or remove restrictions being implemented on some
place. We still need to take all
necessary precaution to really stop the spread of the virus while waiting for
the treatment to be developed, most especially now that the virus is mutating
generating new variants.
March
22, 2021, the Philippine government had reverted to General Community
Quarantine for greater Manila area and nearby provinces as the Covid-19 cases
are on the rise once again. And as of March 29, 2021 it was escalated to
Enhanced Community Quarantine until April 4, 2021. Covid-19 has overstayed its
welcome and it seems like it doesn’t have plans on leaving anytime soon. Wear
your face mask, face shields, and follow your community guidelines. We all want
our lives back and it will not happen anytime soon, so long as there are people
who would continue to be irresponsible and live so carelessly, Rona will stay.
