whenever I see those posts going around Tumblr about spotting neo-nazis, all focusing on the “if he has this sort of tattoo poking out of his manky cutoff denim jacket” level stuff, I’m like… yeah it is good to know the difference between An Iron Cross and some other aesthetic tattoo cross, but one of the most “insidious yet blatant” neo-nazis I’ve ever spoken to started off by just telling me all about her woes with her (white Swedish) boyfriend, feeling out what kind of reaction I would have, and the moment she got me committing to saying “hey, you don’t have to put up with anything like that, you deserve to feel safe and respected in your own house!” she switched seamlessly to talking points like “the government doesn’t care about the terrible helplessness of being a white woman in Sweden, now that they’ve let in all those unstoppably rapacious male ‘refugees’… don’t you wish you could do something about that?”
I feel more and more with every passing day that this lady, with her cute straight-cut fringe and knit sweater and nerdy girl interests, would be doing absolute numbers on here, while her fans continued to frantically warn each other the whole time about those nasty skinheads and how to spot them
the neo-Nazi dogwhistles I see on tumblr come from the cottagecore & dark academia aesthetic boards. tradwifes are the point of recruitment now.
I think this is a really good observation, and thank you for adding it! it’s important to keep up with broad trends like this. however, I will say that tumblr being tumblr, statements like this do imo run the risk of people taking it as “it’s not X aesthetic choices that are The One Big Current Dogwhistle, it’s actually Y aesthetic choices!” which just leads to the exact same problem of fascists just moving on to a different aesthetic with “safe” coding and different buzzwords.
the whole point is that the dangerous stuff always takes the form of people who seem superficially friend-shaped, literally no matter who that is or how generally left-wing people with your aesthetic lean - right-wingers absolutely aren’t above trying to pull people further right with bizarre hooks like “as an asexual, don’t you feel alienated by this degenerate modern obsession with hookups?” or “autism is a trait most common in northern Europe, it’s the free anti-modern-society spirit of our Viking ancestors, don’t you think it might be true that lower races’ standards controlling society is why you suffer under its rules?”, like it really does not matter if their ultimate goal is incompatible with your existence, as you see quite clearly with many white women who like having a job and rights but still get pulled in by the “women’s rights angle” of keeping ~scary~ brown men away from them.
you have to keep looking at the actual content, always, not just veer away from whatever the problematic aesthetic du jour is.
personally i think it’s very gross that wandavision is pulling inspiration from scarlet witch (2016) which is one of the runs that explicitly explores wanda’s romani heritage except they’re clearly just ignoring that aspect of it (tweet is by marvel’s president of marketing) and (poorly) adapting her connection with agatha and witchcraft
in light of what happened in the new episode and wendy getting called “the scarlet witch” i just want to say that in this run, we also learn that the scarlet witch is connected to wanda’s heritage and is something that was passed down through her family (her mother before her):
like i know that this is a pretty recent run but it’s the fact that the president of marvel’s marketing team posted a cover from this run, implying that they drew inspiration from it while the show was being created which means that they saw wanda exploring her heritage and that the scarlet witch title is connected to that but they fully decided to just ignore it and “adapt” whatever parts they wanted to
I call myself a recovering emo cause I used to wear black t-shirts and listen to rise against but l’m really a recovering poser 😔
#always have been too much of a conformist pussy to actually fit into any subcultures #anyways once I get away from my family i will surpass emo... I’m becoming a full goth baby
#quizzes#vans authentic #i have never been to a concert nor have I ever presented as emo (well... to like a real extent) #so that’s probably why half the description does not apply #also lumping paramore in with p*nic!. evil #i will always pick paramore no matter the question 🖤 #also I’ve never owned vans in my life
ok so here’s why the DP remakes look so ….. not good. its not the style of the models. it’s 100% the lighting and shader techniques.
the biggest issue i have is, objects blend too much into the surroundings (there’s no contrast that your brain inherently registers between what is object and what is environment due to lack of model outlines and because of the way the lighting is). like sure barry here stands out…his hair does anyhow. but the shading gradients into basically the same color of his skintone which makes it difficult to separate where his hair starts and ends at first glance. theres no shadows from his hair covering his face; it’s all fuzzy and pillowed.
additionally, the color palette clashes too much; everything is too saturated. the brown of the rocks and green of the grass are the same saturation as the orange and green on his shirt.
and one of the biggest turnoffs from is that the lighting looks like point lights instead of directional light. notice how bright the top of the buildings are but how dark the walls are. also notice how lighting is “spotty”. this might make sense in say, eterna forest, but not in an open city or town. this gives it the effect of being enclosed in a box somehow with a couple of bright light sources on the ceiling.
and the absolute killer is that there is no global illumination.
it’s all shaded with black or some really light color adjacent enough to the base color of the object but doesn’t create a “shadowy” contrast. it’s also very uniform like there’s no verifiable light source.
sorry i just wanted to vent that these are the main problems with the visual aspect of the games, not the models themselves.
we should more talk specifically about the shaders and lighting instead of the vague “i dont like how it looks” because the models themselves aren’t the problem, in fact it’s very faithful to the originals. lighting and shaders can completely change the way a game looks and that’s just what they have to do here
I agree with the lighting but I also feel the base colours they picked are too cold for a cute Chibi style, I tried a quick edit to reduce the too dramatic shadow and add warmer colours (second is my edit)
literally instantly looks better holy shit. the building with the pink overhang looks so good because its reflecting that pinkness (which is an element of global illumination)
would you mind doing more edits of screenshots? this is so cool
