I’ve seen the fandom rip on ML’s character designs but can we just. Appreciate. Appreciate canon Chat Blanc here?? He is UNSETTLING. The contrast of white to our Chat Noir’s black color scheme isn’t new, innovative, or even surprising; it just makes sense narrative-wise but this EXECUTION. It drives in that contrast HARD. And it makes you feel UNCOMFORTABLE. He’s stoic where Chat Noir was expressive and silly. He’s hard and sharp where CN was passionate and tender. He is a winter blizzard when CN was that one thick, heavy blanket that makes it go dark and safe. The stark contrast in execution is unnerving. Because we know this character. We love him, we hate him, he frustrates us and we adore him either because of it or regardless. He’s our boy, fam. And look what happened to our boy.

I don’t get why so many people believe that Adrigami and Lukanette are dating. Because of that Twitter post which was obvious trolling (the whole “unpopular opinion” speaks out loud you can’t take those words seriously) to make the fandom explode, how Thomas Astruc said? People you need to learn that you can’t take everything seriously what Winny and Thomas say. Especially if Thomas says something which would be a big spoiler, he hates spoilers, so that’s obvious that’s not completely true.

During watching the special both scenes were clear to me - they are not dating (yet at least), so I was very surprised that many in the fandom think they are. You can’t take everything explicitly, you need also to read between the lines. This is why I love Miraculous, that’s not a stupid kid show in which everything is said explicitly and which treats kids like idiots all the time (kids are not stupid, they can understand more you can imagine). There’s some depth in in sometimes, there is room to analyse things, so people like @familyagrestefanblog​ or @kisilinramblings​ could entertain the fandom with their analyses and theories (and many others, but they both are first people I think about when it comes to Miraculous analysis).

So I’m going to interpret both scenes. I’m not that good like others and sorry for my lousy English, but I do my best. Lukanette one first, because it’s much more explicit.

Generally, you don’t need to read in it more than Luka’s words. He says: “You know what’s important. That this trip helps you get some clarity”. I mean, how anyone could think they are already dating after hearing those words? Is that line any different in the French original ( @emsylcatac​​ ? @kisilinramblings​​ ? @bookdragonlibrary​​ ?)? He clearly meant that trip will give Marinette chance to see if she’s able to give up on Adrien completely or not. She would not need any “clarity” if she already made up her mind up wants to be with Luka. So they are not together, but they could be in the future, Luka is still waiting for her decision. Luka is ready to be Marinette’s boyfriend, but she is not ready to be his.

That kiss? That was just a cheek kiss, usual friendly gesture in (many?) countries, including France or Poland where I live. That kiss says: “Thank you”, not “I’m your girlfriend”.

In fact I just realized, I interpret Adrigami scene the same, but that’s not that obvious.

While Lukanette scene is warm and friendly, Adrigami one feels cold. So cold. That cold that I need to wear my winter clothes. In that scene, its atmosphere and characters’ gestures are more important than words. You can say that it seems to be cold, because Adrien is miserable since he can’t go on a trip with his friends, but I don’t think that’s the case. At least that’s not the only reason. They are not close to each other enough they are supposed to be if they are dating. Adrien was closer physically with Kagami before, as we have seen in Desperada or the season 3 finale.

I think he’s type of person who will try to find comfort in his girlfriend arms. But for some reason he is not doing that.

I feel there’s distance between them. Both physical and emotional. Kagami makes it clear she’s glad they could have an opportunity to spend more time together, because she is like that, she is always honest.

And that kiss. That feels so much like that what happened in the season 3 finale, when Adrien rejected Kagami’s kiss. I think that kiss is “test” to check if he made his mind up about their relationship. He did not try to kiss her back, he did nothing, he was totally inactive. That was one of the most one-sided kiss I have ever seen. So in fact, he rejected her again. That’s just kiss on the nose, but even if it was a kiss on the lips, it won’t change anything. “True” kissing is when both sides are active. If only one is, that means something is not right. Kagami is still waiting for Adrien’s decision. They are not a couple now, but they could be later.

So my conclusion is that Marinette and Adrien are still not ready to start relationships with Luka and Kagami. It could change in season 4, but at that moment in their life, they are both still hesitating.

So pretty close from what you said :) 

I think the problem here is cultural. Cheek kiss doesn’t have the same meaning in France or Poland than in USA for example. Like hugs. Cheek kiss could be done between family or friends. It’s unromantic kiss, but still done between close people, unlike la bise which is done to say hello and good bye. In French we even have 4 words for kiss: bise, bisou, baiser, baise-main. I already explained the first one, you can also see multiple times during the show, especially between Marinette and Chat noir in Weredad and between Marinette and Chloé ins Despair Bear. Bisou is the general word and the general kiss. It’s not by itself romantic or sexy and could be done everywhere (appropriate of course). Baiser is the romantic kiss on the lips. But the meaning changed with time and as a verb, it now means fuck or bang instead of kiss (French is complicated I know…). Baise-main literally means Kiss-hand (with the old meaning of kiss of course) and it’s a compact word of baiser la main = kiss the hand. It’s an old fashion move we rarely done now if not not anymore. It was a form of respect for the noble ladies, the version of la bise between a man and a woman to still keep some distance and boundaries, but now it has a romantic meaning. Chat noir often does it with Ladybug and with Marinette in Evillustrator if I remember well. 

I think kiss and hug are reverse between USA and France. I mean la bise could be done by mostly strangers, I mean a friend from a friend or a friend of the family, etc. while hugs are for close people (family and friends) while hugs could be more formal in USA and kisses more intimate. But I may be wrong… 

Oh! I just noticed with your screenshots than Luka also has a luggage. Does he go to a school trip too? :o 

About Adrigami. The scene indeed feels cold, maybe because of the red atmosphere/light and that Adrien feels sad and miserable because his father cut his wings another time and he couldn’t be a boy like the others because of him. Kagami isn’t used to social interactions so her way of cheering him up and reassuring him feels off, not working at all, almost like she isn’t trying to reach for him. Which for me isn’t true. She is more socially awkward than genuinely cold. Plus the cultural differences between France and Japan where showing our emotions and physical closeness is rarer.

Adrien indeed doesn’t mind to be close with Kagami (contrary to Lila and Chloé) but he wasn’t at ease with a kiss on the lips. I think the kiss on the cheek here means “I respect your boundaries” rather than a test. Kagami knows he’s not at ease yet to kiss her on the lips so she goes for the cheek instead. He’s passive here because he is in his own mind, still thinking of what he’ll miss (the school trip) rather than of what he’ll have (spending time with Kagami) so mindly he wasn’t present until he feels the kiss and then look back at her. 

I think Marinette and Adrien both like spending time with Luka and Kagami. But I don’t think it’s for romantic reasons. Marinette finds confort and peace with Luka and he’s mature enough to help her see things clearly and her female friends push her in one direction thinking about her best but maybe missing a point. Adrien finds closeness and acceptance in Kagami because she can understand what he is leaving through having also a strict parent. Marinette and Adrien both feel lonely and Luka and Kagami help them closing the hole. But I don’t think there is something romantic toward Luka or Kagami…

I already got translation from @emsylcatac​ but thanks for yours anyway. :) I only wanted to be sure if Americans changed meaning of the line like they like to do from time to time. I consider the French version as the “truest” canon, so every American changes don’t matter, especially when it comes to analysis, the original vision of the writers is the most important.

We also use few words for kiss in Polish, the most “serious” is “pocałunek” you can use it for every single kiss, but when you mean romantic one you rather use that word, while “całus” or “buziak” are used rather for unromantic kisses, especially when you kiss children, because they sound a bit childish and playful.

That’s the same thing that Luka had when he was delivering pizza in Heart Hunter. I guess it’s attached permanently to his bike’s 3D model. ;)

Kagami kissed Adrien on the nose, not on the cheek, it was closer to a kiss on the lips. Anyway, it doesn’t matter how that kiss looked like, the most important was his reaction. I think he would react to that kiss if they were dating. I can’t see Adrien as someone who could ignore kiss of his girlfriend even if he is miserable at that moment.

Well, we will see in season 4. I prefer to believe that they aren’t dating yet, because then romantic Adrienette moments would feel so wrong. Imagine Lukanette or Adrigami slow dance in the moonlight when Adrien and Marinette are in a romantic relationship. That would make most of the fandom pissed.
