“Angry, and half in love with you, and tremendously sorry, I turned away.”
— F. Scott Fitzgerald (via quotemadness )
thinking that part of the reason why novels sometimes ring hollow is the lack of breathing room between scenes where things happen, where emotion and base states can be established to highlight the changes occurring over the course of the narrative.
the idea that the internet these days is so much more dangerous for children than it was before is interesting but i dont actually know of any data that supports that hypothesis and it’s basically only ever brought up to justify reactionary behavior usually rooted in ignorance/denial of where children actually tend to get hurt the most (i.e. schools, families, churches etc.). it reminds me of when people pretend that porn or sex work in general are somehow hypnotizing men into being more misogynist, instead of recognizing that misogyny is encouraged and rewarded in our culture regardless of whether any kind of sex work is tolerated
“Most of my poetry has spent its time trying to figure out what ‘being’ is—human ‘being’ and non-human ‘being’. How do they go together. Can they. What on earth is human desire. I knew even then desire was our illness, as well as our stunning spark. It has turned out to be more our illness. Our terminal illness. What can I say. That is what I write from and about.”
— Jorie Graham, interview, EarthLines, August 2012
if you want to support sex workers, please read up on decriminalization (one, two, three) and start uplifting the voices of real sex workers. partial support, like saying “i support sex workers but porn is bad/buyers should be punished/the ‘industry’ is the problem,” or refusing to see sex work as a legitimate profession, are all part of the problem and contribute to stigma around sex workers that gets them killed. sex workers do not need to be patronized, they do not need to be told that the industry is abusing them (they know, and better than civilians could), and they do not need to be rescued.
insisting that sex workers deserve ‘respect’ (in the most nebulous use of the word, without any material consequences) while at the same time denying them autonomy and actual legal protections, harms sex workers at every level. civilians (i.e., those who don’t engage in sex work) have a duty to be careful in how we talk about sex workers. too often we’re unintentionally dehumanizing, disrespectful, insulting, patronizing, and just plain merciless in how we conduct our discussions around sex work, and simply claiming to support sex workers is not enough.
just thinking about the moon and stuff.
[Image description: an illustration of a person drawn from the shoulders up, in shades of teal. They have their back to the viewer and their shoulders are slanted downwards. They are wearing a sweater and have a tattoo visible above its neckline, in the middle of their shoulders. They have short hair, which is tied up in a ponytail. Various leafy plants appear to be growing from one side of their hair. The background is pale peach and contains a large orange moon. White cartoon stars with black outlines trail in a rough line diagonally across the image. /end ID]

the first ever human to conceptualize a computer was a norse farmer named Eðelgarþ Gusvarþ who had a brief moment of supernatural foresight and imagined a large picture frame you would stare into while using a rock to scroll through pictures of oats. he experienced this thought for only eight seconds until he was instantly killed by an errant farming sickle
