Last one (for now I forgot a female but I’ll post her tomorrow I screwed up her coloring) and my personal favorite of these four men Patsu from Castle In The Sky. I’ll be honest with you, I love a goofball. To me that’s what Patsu is an adorable little goofball with a strong heart and the ability to do what is right. Patsu is really special for me because he was also one of my first anime crushes I loved him back when I was in middle school. My parents even call the egg on a piece of toast lovingly a Patsu. I just rewatched this movie earlier today because I haven’t seen it since December two years ago. I still love him just as much as I did when I was 13. He’s an amazing make lead willing to give Sheeta the benefit of the doubt in every situation and usually letting her lead because she knows the type of magic that he’s dealing with. He just wants her to be happy and eventually that’s what he gets to have her in his life and that little detail that he let Laputa be destroyed despite the fact that he really wanted to prove his father wasn’t a liar but he just lets it happen in fact it was his idea. He found a new dream and to me that’s the most amazing thing about his character and his development.
Even though I’ve only ever seen this movie once (I’m seeing it again tonight for my pick for family movie night with my parents). I watched it at 16 so it’s a little bit fuzzy but I will always remember Ashitaka and what his journey means. He might seem serious and stoic but he’s also remarkably kind despite what he has gone through. Life hasn’t been kind to him really at all. He’s another character that I just want to love and support as a friend. His determination and prowess to support those he loves by standing by their side and fighting tooth and nail for what’s right was always a quality that I idolized about him when I first watched this movie. He journeys to see with eyes unclouded by hate and I think that by the end he shows that you just have to be kind even if you don’t understand why that person does what they do.
For those that don’t know me probably would be surprised by this pick. Spirited Away was a movie that terrified me when I was younger but it slowly grew on me the older I got. For as long as I can remember though I always loved the main male character Haku. His kindness no matter how flippant it might seem to other people if you’re in his circle he would do anything for you especially if it’s Chihiro. This character is also one of the more tragic ones. He literally forgot who he was due to Yababa’s magic. He’s one of those characters that I would just want to be friends with. It might seem silly to some people but I have a really special connection with Haku. His selflessness is something that has always moved me. He is just one of those characters that it’s hard for me to explain why I love him as much as I do.
Alright so this is going to be in four parts because otherwise we are just going to have a giant wall of text but I really wanted to talk about my favorite Miyazaki make characters. We’re going to start with the one from my favorites list at the bottom but I still love his character and that’s Howl Pendragon/Jenkins. A lot of people might think that he is my favorite but he’s actually not. I do love his personality though!! From how over dramatic he can be, to how much he would sacrifice for Sophie throwing away his life just to protect hers. I love the way that they animated him with a sort of swagger but he just isn’t my type of man. I love his relationships that he builds with Sophie and the that he always tried his hardest to get past his cowardly nature in order to protect her.

I decided that yesterday I was going to draw my three favorite Miyazaki female leads and kind of talk about the impact that they had on my life. From left to right we have Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle, Fio the much underrated mecahanic from Porco Rosso and Chihiro from Spirited Away. Sophie has been my favorite Miyazaki lead since I was really little about seven when I first watched the movie. Even though in my mom’s eyes she might seem “foolhearty” I think that the better term is just kind. I spent most of my childhood noticing that kindness and even if somebody had done nothing but hurt me like the Witch of the Waste does her she still treats her with kindness and sympathy at the end noting that she is just selfish and doesn’t realize that she is hurting people. Her sarcastic streak as an old woman is something that never fails to have me in stitches. It’s with Sophie’s kindness, he’d sense of humor, her will to stand by those she loves and their decisions but not at the expense that they will hurt themselves that I love her for. Fio is really special to me. When I was thirteen I had all of her lines from the Disney English dub memorized. I could probably still do my favorite ones if I was asked to. Fio Piccolo is a mechanic for airplanes after the Great Depression in Italy. She is a woman working in male orientated profession and she’s not going to let that get the best of her. She might be young but she’s also determined, takes none of that male domination bullshit and is persistent as well. As a shy meek 13 year old girl who always had a soft spot for this movie she meant a lot to me growing up. My final fave and probably the one that is the most like who I’ve grown up to be is Chihiro from Spirited Away. She starts off the movie as egotistical, whiny and bratty but grows to understand that she has the willpower to move forward. Change is good if this movie still teaches me anything. It might be hard to aceept it at the time but when you look at it change is good. I love her caring nature towards her friends that she makes, her optimism that she gains, her will to help anybody who might need it and the wisdom that she takes from this experience. To me Chihiro is a character that I have grown up with and I love her determination and her drive. All Miyazaki female characters are brilliant and if you’ve seen his movies I’d love to hear your personal favorites!!
OH MY GOD PEOPLE!!! It’s finally here, we finally know what Kakeru and Machi are going to look like this season!! I am so freaking ready for Aaron Dismuke and Caitlin Glass to step into these characters to the screen. They mean the world to me and are some of my favorite characters in the series.
So my friend @bio-hazard0us and I have been working on a lot of My Hero Academia original characters and I was hit with the sudden idea to make my first villain one. I thought that I would share my process so that they could see it and everyone can know how I flesh out a character. In this case I have paired my original character up with Jin Bubaigawara aka the villain Twice in My Hero Academia.
A: What are/were this character’s best subjects in school? Violet was good at just about every subject in school but her favorites were history, ballet, English and of course botany
B: Do they have any allergies? She is funnily enough allergic to bees even though they are essential to her quirk. They pollinate her flowers but just the sight of them has her feeling ill.
C: Can they swim well? She taught herself how to swim rather well and it’s one of her favorite hobbies that she does on her days off.
D: How do they react to being flirted with? A flustered awkward disaster mess that’s how she would react to being flirted with (Especially if it was with Twice. He does it to mess with her in and out of costume and always teases her when she gets a bright pink face.
E: How are they with children? Violet comes from a really big family and loves her siblings but one of Jin’s biggest fears is that his mental instability will be passed down to his children.
F: What’s one thing they’re really bad at? She is awful at being a villain, let’s just be honest here. She is mostly doing this because Jin is doing it and she wanted to stick by his side. She is always known for being the most genuine member out of the League and even helped Bakugou escape. She is also very bad with directions so she usually has to be sent out with Dabi or Toga as well as Twice because they both are extremely scatterbrain and tend to get way off track.
G: How do they flirt? Violet is basically the worst type of flirt, the type that doesn’t even know when they are flirting. She just is genuine with her compliments and is always open about how she feels. She loves to compliment Jin and it is usually her way of getting revenge when he flirts with her “That was so good hun!!” She’s basically his little cheerleader always encouraging him to do his best at everything that he does and he loves that about her.
H: What is their deadly sin? Her deadly sin would most likely be Gluttoney because she has a problem with sweets and knowing exactly when to eat them. (Twice jokes that it’s lust which usually results in him getting smacked upside the head.)
I: On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do they love themselves? On a scale of one to ten she loves herself at a very low 4. She loves Jin more than anything in the entire world but she hates having to be a part of the League of Villains. She would much rather be a small flower shop owner even with her quirk that is meant to do things for evil. She has a lot of crippling self doubt and doesn’t know how to deal with the awful things that she has to do. The only reason that her number isn’t any lower is because of Twice.
J: What’s their sense of humour like? Her sense of humor is very bubbly and peppy, it’s a lot of plant puns and really bad jokes that Jin told her to get her to laugh at him when she was younger. If she’s tired it’s a lot more sarcastic and full of attitude but usually that only happens when Shigaraki asks her to do villain stuff when she has already had a long enough day as it was. Twice loves her either way you look at it with her sense of humor. He just loves her more than anything when you really think about it he considers her the best possible thing that he could ever ask for.
K: How do you know when you’ve upset them? You will know when you’ve upset her when she sends her “Audrey II” after you. That is her man eating venus flytrap that she named after the flytrap in Little Shop of Horrors.
L: What is their favourite board game? Any board game that makes her laugh. She loves to play Apples to Apples with Twice and the rest of the League of villains it’s the one time when she truly thinks that they are actually a family and she really feels like she fits in.
M: What is their favourite dessert? She loves ice cream, absolutely loves ice cream. When she has a bad day stress or anxiety wise Jin brings her strawberry cheesecake Ben & Jerries ice cream and Phish Food for him and they both openly talk about what they are struggling with (Mental health for the win!!!)
N: What do they usually eat for breakfast? Her go to breakfast usually has some fruit in it. That’s really the only thing since she isn’t always hungry in the mornings.
O: What would it take to break them, inside and out? For Jin to break up with her. That’s what would break her inside and out she would not be able to live without him making her laugh. If he were to break up with her and not even want to be friends that would cause her to have a full on mental breakdown.
P: How do they handle money? She is nearly a professional at handling money. She doesn’t have a whole lot of it because she works part time at a flower infused coffee and pastry shop.
Q: Are they patient? She is one of the most patient people that you will ever meet in your entire life. It is one of her best qualities that she prides herself on. You sort of have to be patient when your long term love of your life is Jin Bubaigawara (Twice). She always rubs his back when he cries into her shoulder apologizing for saying anything wrong in his other personality. It breaks her heart to see him like that. She would much rather see the joking having a fun time side of his personality but she has loved him for as long as she can remember and she’s going to be damned if a little mental illness roadblock is going to get in her way.
R: What are their hands like? Her hands have little calluses on them that Jin loves playing with as a fidget technique because having her presence around makes the voices in his head for once shut fully off. He can be comfortable around her just holding her hand and telling stories in his different personalities to make her laugh.
S: How stealthy are they? She is actually very stealthy and extremely quiet person (when Twice isn’t around to make her laugh)
T: Where are they ticklish? Violet is ticklish almost literally everywhere on her entire body something that kid Jin loved because it caused her to snort when she laughed if he did it too much.
U: What’s their voice like? She’s naturally soft spoken unless she’s really excited about something than she has the tendency to rise in volume.
V: What’s the easiest way to annoy them? The easiest way to annoy her is to send her off on a solo mission with Shigaraki. It takes everything in her not to just blow up at him and tell him that she’s done being his minion. Then she thinks of Twice and just takes some deep breaths to calm herself down and remembers why she’s doing this. So that the love of her life can fit in somewhere and finally be truly happy with his life.
W: Can they dance? Dancing is one of the things that she is the best at pretty much all styles of dance.
X: What’s their most petty little secret? Her pesky little secret is that she made a stuffed smaller version of Jin as Twice for the nights when they aren’t together and she can’t sleep. It helps her sleep at night knowing that she has something to remind her of her boyfriend.
Y: What is one question they’ve always wanted an answer to? Why did her dad have to die? Her older brother who was a police officer was caught in the crossfire and killed by a hero in an accident.
Z: How do they sleep? She doesn’t sleep that well at all if she doesn’t have either her stuffed version of Twice or the real deal around her. She suffers from frequent nightmares of the awful things that she was forced to do as a member of the League and the momentous amounts of bullying that she was given as a child.
1. Do they sleep with a stuffed animal? She does actually sleep with stuffed animals. Jin won her a massive stuffed sea otter at a shooting darts game when they were back in high school at their cultural festival and she loves it so much. She also has the afformented stuffed version of Twice.
2. Can they take care of a plant? What about a pet? What about a child? Her quirk is quite literally taking care of the plants that she houses as tattoos on her arms and that she keeps in her garden at work. She has a pet cat that is probably the most tsundere cat to ever exist but it loves it’s human so much. Violet adopts young Toga as her own showing her what actual love and affection really should look like instead of the pain that she has suffered through.
3. Ask them to describe their love interest. Violet would describe Jin as the sweetest man that she has ever met. Forget about the mental illness, that doesn’t bother her in fact it only makes her want to take care of him on his really bad days. She truly loves her boyfriend more than anything in the world. He is the reason why she gets up everyday to make him laugh with her little screw ups at being a villain. To her, you can’t find a more perfect man than Jin Bubaigawara. She loves his sense of humor, the way that he looks at the world and the man behind the mania more than anything. She’ll jokingly call him her Deadpool and he loves it so much since that was one of his favorite heroes in high school.
4. Do they look good in red? In her opinion since part of her villain costume (her hoodie) is red she would say yes. Twice jokes that she would look good in a paper bag.
5. Speech! Speech! Speech! Speech! It would definitely be a late night speech to the love of her life Jin after a night that he’s been struggling with his split personality disorder. He’ll tell her that he doesn’t deserve her and her pureness and that she should run while she still can. She would tell him that would never, ever happen. That she loves him despite her mental illness. That she loves the man that has always been there for her and is the other half of her soul. That he isn’t defined by his mental illness but by the person that lies beneath all of that. He would just melt into her side and she would quietly run her fingers through his hair turning him into putty in her arms.
6. Who will they take advice from, no matter what it is? Who won’t they take advice from, no matter what it is? She will always take advice from her father who has known what is best for her throughout her entire life and is immensely supportive of her relationship with Twice. He loves Jin and worries about him instead of being against their relationship he gives Violet advice for how to deal with him and his outbursts that he sometimes has. She would absolutely never listen to Shigaraki no matter what. He tells her that her “emotions” for Twice will be her downfall and that she shouldn’t be as kind as she is if she wants to be a villain.
7. Describe them in three words. Now let them describe themselves in three words. I would describe Violet as endlessly patient, kind and forgiving of all of Jin’s downfalls. Usually when he forgets an anniversary (he never forgets her birthday though). She would describe herself as a wet blanket, a burden on Jin and a naturally spineless person.
8. Do complex puzzles intrigue or frustrate them? Puzzles have always intrigued her
9. Do they empathize with non-sentient things (dolls, plants, books…)? She has an attachment to her favorite book since childhood that her dad would always read to her. It’s called The Little Prince and it’s been her favorite book since she was five years old. She feels an empathization with her plants that she needs to use for her quirk and always apologizes before she has to use them.
10. What age do they most want to be right now? She wants to be at the age that she is right now. She lives on her own even though she wishes that she could stay live with Jin full time.
11. They’ve won the lottery. Spend, or save? Save the money for the future and get a big house for her, Jin and Himiko to live in. She loves her family more than anything and just wants for them to be happy together.
12. Do they like romance in the books they read (or in the book they’re in)? She has a soft spot for romance in films. She openly cries every time that she watches the first ten minutes in Up or the ending of The Painted Veil. She is a naturally overly emotional person so whenever she watches one of these films Jin has a box of tissues at the ready to dry her eyes with.
13. Name one thing their parents taught them. Her parents taught hre to be kind and patient with most everyone she meets which is one of the biggest reasons as to why she is so good with Jin and his mental instability.
14. Would they agree with the term ‘guilty pleasure’? Do they have any? She has a guilty pleasure for the film version of Little Shop Of Horrors and is often seen humming Mean Green Mother From Outer Space while she waters Audrey II
15. What would they consider a waste of time– other than school or work? Violet considers lazing around a waste of her time. Why be lazy when she could be watering her plants or helping Himiko with her homework? Jin definitely has to draw the line at some point and give her a backwards hug telling her that she needs to take a break.
16. If money wasn’t a limit, what would they wear? She would wear designer clothes that she always sees in the shop windows. There is this really adorable dress that has plants all over it that she loves to look at on the street and in the shop window (Jin buys it for her for Christmas once he gets a steady following with his artwork.)
17. Do they like children? Violet has always loved children and willingly will look after her siblings if she doesn’t need to be doing villainous work with Twice and Himiko for the night. She was raised to love children and her and Jin have talked about adopting others when Himiko goes off to college. He’s legitimately afraid of being a good father but she is always there to encourage him and tell him how good he is with their adopted daughter. He teased her that they already were basically siblings so it didn’t really matter but he always loves her encouragement.
18. Kissing: tongue or no tongue? It depends on where they are. She loves to press little kisses to his mask when he’s wearing it but when the mask is off they do have the tendency to kiss. She’s actually asexual so as long as it doesn’t go to sexual intercourse she’s okay with all the types of intimacy that kissing can bring.
19. Do they study before tests? Practice before job interviews? She always has this need to study for tests even though everyone around her encourages that she’ll ace it with flying colors because she is just naturally intelligent. She actually helped Jin get his GED in high school so that he could pass and got him through the grades with the help of a lot of patience and snacks to go around.
20. What do they like that nobody else does? Most of the stuff that she likes that nobody else tends to like is the manga that she reads in her free time. This gets a lot of jokes poked at her by Jin and Himiko but they love it about her that she is a massive Otaku.
21. What would it take for them to break up with someone? What would be the last straw? There would be no real “last straw” with her and Jin. Unless he cheats on her which he would never do because he loves her way too much to do that to her.
22. Do they like being called pet names? Do they call other people pet names? What’s their go-to? Oh the sappy nicknames between these two strap yourselves in folks especially for Jin\Twice because his are numerous. His favorites are dolls and baby that he uses outside of the mask and they never fail to make her soft like butter. With the mask on it’s cupcake and milady “Hey cupcake need a little help over here!!”
23. Stability or novelty? Stability all the way. She needs to keep to her schedule and her downtime needs to be there otherwise she will fall off the rails and it’s not a pretty picture. Jin is there to make sure that even her stability is still the life of the party.
24. Honesty or charity? Honesty is always the best policy.
25. Safety or possibility? Possibility she is always open to new ones that could change her life and it’s one of the reasons why she started dating Jin she saw all the possibilities that their relationship could have.
26. Talent or effort? Effort all the way. She will always put forth the effort into everything that she does. She has this belief and it’s the same way with her father that there is no talent without a little bit of effort thrown into everything.
27. Forgiveness or vengeance (or…)? Forgiveness. She will always forgive Jin no matter what his mental illness does to put a damper on their relationship she will always take him back with open arms.
28. Would they date a fixer-upper? She would because she believes that there is really no such thing as a fixer-upper. I mean growing up her favorite movie was Beauty and the Beast so she has always believed that the true beauty of somebody isn’t on the outside but on the inside their personality. Jin is basically one giant fixer upper that most people would run for the hills from but not Violet. Most of her siblings scratch their heads when they seen the two of them together but they know that their sister is the happiest that they have ever seen her when she’s around him.
Two of my friends from my Sero Appreciation Group Chat were interested in the fanfic that I had written with Sero as my oc’s best friend in the class.
Summary: Meet Mitsuki Haruka, a young girl admitted to the best school for heroes in training for her incomparable water quirk that she can basically do as she pleases with. It’s at UA High where she is finally able to be herself, make new friends that will help her come into her own, study hero work amongst the best teachers and possibly find love in the place that she least expected to.
My first group chat has so far been a huge success!! I’ve started another one about something that I am equally passionate about, my favorite student in My Hero Academia Tenya Iida because I’ve noticed that he doesn’t have a whole lot of love and I want to make sure that he gets it.
“Mr. Stark? I don’t feel so good.”
“He’s my little brother, he’s all I have left!”
“My battery is low and it is getting dark.”
“Farewell, Master Burglar.”
“Egg? I dreamed…that I was old.”
“It’s over, isn’t it? Why can’t I move on?”
“Did you fall? Or did you let go?”
“I could have saved more.”
“Please don’t put me in the dark. I’s scared of the dark.”
“Phillip, you would like it uptown. It’s quiet uptown.”
“I don’t want to go…!”
“I wish you all a long and happy life.”
Feel free to add more I’m sad
He’s my little brother he’s all I have left still makes me overly emotional to this very day…
I started a group chat!! It’s called Anime\Cartoons with Aspergers. It’s about people on the spectrum who have a unique and special relationship with cartoons and anime. If you have an interest you can message me and I’ll let you into the chat.
Growing up, I didn’t have the easiest childhood at least health wise. I was always sick and there was almost always something “wrong” with me. My family wasn’t exactly wealthy and a lot of my favorite memories were of sitting in front of our small television. It was chump change compared to what we have now but so many of those early memories I have of enjoying a classic Disney movie on VHS. That isn’t what I want for this to be about though. I loved one band when I was really small other than The Beatles and that band was The Wiggles. Everytime I heard them on the screen my ears would stop hurting it was basically like clockwork. Dancing and singing along with all my old favorite songs from Toot Toot Chugga Chugga Big Red Car to Hot Potato their songs have influenced my life in some way. I had one that was my favorite of the group. That man was the leader of the group, the yellow wiggle Greg Page.
This man basically helped me get from point A to point B when I was a kid. A lot of other children I think didn’t really get where that love was coming from. My own parents for the most part didn’t really get it but still encouraged that love anyways. My dad would pretend to hate them, mostly because I think when you’re pulling an all nighter for a class to get your physics degree the last thing you need is to hear your daughter loudly singing Rockabye Your Bear. This is where my love of music came from most likely it is the first band that I remember truly getting into. I collected everything that I could mostly cds and never missed an episode when it was on.
Greg was always my favorite. His sunny disposition and the way that he would interact with the children on the show made me want to be there myself. I like to think that he was my first interaction with having an actual hero. A person that made me smile and that I wanted to be like. He was naturally soft spoken but at the same time he never felt like he was talking down to the children watching his show. I also like to think that he is the reason that I have such a big soft spot for magicians since that was his main quirk and hobby that he had. Performing parlor magic tricks to make kids smile and laugh at him.
I found out that was retiring right after I moved two states. I was seven years old and flipping through channels on the cable television. I found an episode of the classic musical show and sat down and watched it from start to finish. It was like nothing had changed and even though my dad looked at me a little bit funny he didn’t really question it. I was going through a really rough time back then trying to make friends and failing at it. When the episode ended I saw them all come out onto a stage surrounded by children. That’s when Greg made the announcement that he was too sick to continue his job. I just remember my heart breaking. It felt like one of the last thing that was keeping my life normal was just thrown out the window. My dad instantly came running having heard the news from his office and sat me down talked me through what I was feeling.
I haven’t thought about Greg in a really long time. I still would sometimes listen to their old music that they made together and remember the times of my youth sitting in front of that same dusty old television. Part of me will always hold him on this pedestal that I do the same with Mr. Rogers. I was going on YouTube today and saw a video titled Greg Page goes to the hospital after a heart attack. He was of course doing a charity event for the fires that are going on in Australia to raise money for the koalas. Instantly my heart sank. I thought that I had lost another person that had changed my life for the better when I was younger. I’m so glad that he is going to make a full and speedy recovery. My condolences to Anthony, Murray and Jeff as well as the other members of the cast and crew that worked with him as well as his family. Even though he is going to make a full recovery he almost didn’t. It took 26 minutes of CPR to bring him back which is almost unheard of. I’m so happy that he is going to be alright. This man has helped me out so much during the early years of my life through all those ear infections and migraines.
Ever since I was first getting into anime I realized something that a lot of people probably have if you are not even an avid fan. Everyone has different tastes of course in men and women but there are some things that I think are just taste. I don’t have very many anime characters that I would date since I don’t really have sexual attraction as I am asexual. I look for mostly personality even though some of these boys are physically attractive. I hope that you keep that in consideration and also that this is my personal opinion. There will be some head scratchers on this list for some people (one in particular towards the start) and if everyone can keep this in check then we’ll get along fine!!
My fifth choice is most definitely my very first anime crush Death the Kid from Soul Eater. I have the biggest soft spot for this show even though it doesn’t exactly end well for the show. I love his personality, even though he is known for being the biggest sucker for things being symmetrical. As a girl with a mental health issue and a lot of ADD I can completely relate to what he goes through. I love his genuine nature protecting the Thompson sisters and making them his weapons. I love him so much he’s one of the most perfect boys out there in anime, to me personally. You’ll learn very quickly especially when I get to my number one husbando you’ll find out that making me laugh is probably my biggest non-sexual kink. Hands down he’s the second character that made me nearly split my sides laughing. No matter how old I get he’ll always be the first anime crush that I had when I got into middle school.
My fourth choice is probably the most questionable one for most people that know this show, I have my personal argument, I am a sucker for vampires in general. I blame my best friend for getting me into a show later on in this list as she is the gothic one of the two of us. I love vampires and think that not only are they mysterious but also ridiculously attractive even to somebody who doesn’t experience sexual attraction. This show is loved by many “thirsty fangirls” for the vampire romance anime genre and that is Diabolik Lovers. My favorite is probably the least bad of the group, Azusa Mukami. To me, this boy is just adorable and tragic. Most of the fangirls to them this is the pure sweet baby amongst the nightmare that is most of the boys on this show. I love his personality and how he is the one boy that is an actual sweetheart to Yui. Where most demine or insult her he instead tells her that everything will be alright. I love his natural kind and gentle nature that is normal. The thing that would turn people off is his masochistic nature. He comes from a very tragic background and I have a massive soft spot for him. He is adorable and I would wrap him up in my arms around him and tell him that love does not equal pain. He’s a sweetheart and I love his personality even though I’m just getting into the show myself after I did a lot of research on these characters before picking a different best boy.
My third anime boyfriend and the second vampire that you will see on my list. This anime basically was one of the most confusing but at the same time I loved it at the same time and I had to call my best friend so many times for her to explain everything. My boyfriend from this show is hands down Takumi Ichiju. I love him SO GODDAMN MUCH!! No matter what this is one of the few characters that I love more than anything. He’s the most cinnamon of cinnamon rolls and I love him so much. He’s my bubbly and sweet vampire baby basically and he warmed my heart. I love him so much sorry I just can’t sometimes this is one of my many info dumping problems. My best friend jokes that he is the vampire version of my favorite anime husbando and that I completely have a type of blonde haired, darker colored eyes and an upbeat personality. For a vampire he is not what you would expect instead of being angsty he is usually my happy and upbeat baby. I always wanted to see and know more about him instead of him being just a side character. I love his relationship with my best friend’s boyfriend from the anime Shiki Senri. I love these characters even if the show itself is not really the best.
My second anime boyfriend that I wish was real is one that I’m finally going to see animated after years of reading the wikipedia pages for this show and finally seeing him in the manga. Most would probably scratch their heads in confusion but I have a genuine reason as to why I picked him. It is Kakeru Manabe from Fruits Basket. This show has cute boys out the wazoo but I have this thing for jokesters as you will quickly notice. To me Kakeru is the type to bury his pain through humor so that others don’t worry about him. He’s the type that puts on a facade to make others laugh even if it means that he’s suffering in silence. He’s the type of person to put his s\o above everybody else and to me he would be my second dream boyfriend other than the one that we’ll get to at the bottom of this list. Kakeru is an absolute sweetheart always willing to be there for Yuki as his best friend. He loves to make others laugh and even though some might find him annoying, I’ve always found him to be one of the sweetest things on the planet. I love his personality, the fact that in the anime he’s going to a left ear piercing, the idea that he’s going to be voiced by Aaron Dismuke who is thankfully doing a lot more work now and his relationship with Machi, his half sister. I would love to date somebody just like him in the future and to me he’s number three in terms of my best anime boyfriends.
Oh good lord, alright my number one character\husbando is the one that makes me the most flustered in the entire world. My best friend loves to torture me and she’ll watch this show with me and just laugh at my pain because she’s just that kind of asshole who gets pleasure out of seeing me flustered as hell with a pillow covering my face. This is of course, a host from the anime Ouran High School Host Club. Judging by what you know about my personality thus far and my love of jokesters I think you can guess that most would probably say that it’s one of the twins but it’s actually not. My number one anime husbando is Tamaki Suoh resident princely French boy with a spazy and overprotective nature. I absolutely adore this character with all of my being basically. If I were to ever name one character that ruined me for all boys and men in the modern world it would have to be Tamaki. When I mentioned that Kid was the second character that had me splitting my sides laughing consistently my first was Tamaki by far. Everything that Vic brought to this character, whether his allegations or not, I stand firm by my decision. He’s a goofball with a heart of gold, loves the people around him more than anything, the most naive and pure of boys yet still able to be intelligent when the time comes for it. My type is a firm gentlemen and you can’t get more gentlemanly than Tamaki Suoh. He would treat his s\o as if they were the sun and moon of this earth. We all know that he does this with Haruhi once they get married. I’ve spent so long trying to look for my Tamaki in the world and nearly given up countless times. Getting my hopes and then shot down last summer when I thought I had finally hit the jackpot only to find that of course he already had a girlfriend really hurt me for a long time. I gave up on trying to look for a man that would be my Tamaki, shut myself off from the person that hurt me. I thought that I wasn’t good enough to deserve a Tamaki and then the thought hit me, who cares? The only person who thinks that I’m not good enough is me. I needed to get myself out of that mindset. I started to give myself mental pep talks every time I started to feel bad about myself. Usually they sounded like the characters that I love. The most common counteraction to my self deprecation was hearing Tamaki into the back of my mind. He would tell me how worthy I was of love and that I was a princess even though I had been hurt in the past. It might sound dumb to others but to me he is number one anime husbando in my opinion. Even with Vic’s outing as a sex offender I’m still able to look at this character. He was just the voice not the character as a whole. With that being said, Tamaki Suoh is my number one anime dream boyfriend.
For me having heroes is something that I don’t really do very often. I’m a little bit different and I think in a different way than I think most people would. To me what makes a true hero is somebody that I can admire. Whether they’re funny, talented, unique, weird themselves or they just do whatever they do\did so well that it changes my life for the better. A lot of these people you might not really understand and they are more people that I idolize that have changed my life and helped me become more confident than actual heroes. I will be counting two that actually has since passed away but he is a huge part of my personality.
The first person to me is the easiest, he’s the person that I try to emulate the most and he has helped me out in so many different ways through the characters that he’s played. My biggest hero is Rob Paulsen voice actor extraordinaire. This might come as a surprise to some of you who don’t know me in real life but I love cartoons, and when I say I love them I mean I LOVE cartoons. They are my main special interest and something that I study in my free time. The character who spoke to me when I was seven years old and lonely was Yakko Warner. If I watched his skits, I was no longer alone. I could laugh and if I could laugh that would mean eventually I would be alright. Most of what I know about the business comes from Rob’s Talkin’ Toons podcast that I listen to all the time the same episodes (I recommend the Richard Horvitz one, Billy West one and Charlie Adler one I learned the most from these three.) He has this saying that on the bad days I just say to myself and I start to smile “Laughter is the best medicine and the best thing is you can’t OD and the refills are free.” If I were to meet anybody on this list of six people I would want to meet him hands down. I would just want to thank him for everything that he has done for me.
Alright second hero out of six I idolize Lin Manuel Miranda writer lyricist for Alexander Hamilton and In The Heights. He also played the main character in both musicals. A lot of musical theater fans admire him but for me this is more of a personal story than anything else. I sent Lin a letter through snail mail around four years ago as something that I needed to do for school to graduate. I kept running outside to check the mailbox everyday after I got home from school and would see that the mailman came. Everyday I came back flipping through the bills, letters and other articles and my heart broke a little bit more every time. I thought that I wouldn’t hear anything so after two months I eventually gave up checking. Little did I know that right after Tonys season I would get my response. I ran inside screaming excitedly that it had finally came and my dad has been telling me to get it framed ever since. I feel like if I frame it though it will become a lot less real.
This next one is going to seem really stupid since I can’t ever have a conversation with him. For the reasoning that he does not speak English. I am speaking of course of Hayo Miyazaki-san the head of animation for Studio Ghibli. This man basically is like the Japan Walt Disney to me. I grew up with his films especially Totoro that was my favorite when I was really little. I would watch the opening scene and just die laughing at the little creatures making the silly faces. Over the course of my life he has given me relatability through his characters like Kiki who showed me that girls don’t just have to sweet and kind but can also save the day at the end of it. I have been so inspired to become a writer through his movies and even if he thinks that anime is essentially a mistake I couldn’t really care less because without him I wouldn’t have one of my biggest heroes in the world.
The first hero that passed away has been a massive part of my life for as long as I can remember even if I’ve only ever seen one film with him in it in a major role. I watched the movie Singin’ In The Rain with my grandma that I’ve since had to cut out of my life when I was four. She is where I get my love of musical theater from since my parents while they enjoy it they don’t love it like me. Most of my friends that know me probably find this hero really weird but if I were to want to thank any of these men it would be this one. Since I was four I have been obsessed with the tap dancing of Donald O’Connor. To me, even though he was around during the 40′s 50′s and 60′s when dancing was a huge deal since you had Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and probably man more he is the one that has most inspired me. His enthusiasm when you got a pair of tap shoes on him is something that’s infectious. He is easily one of the handsomest celebrities to me as well there’s just something that he gave me when I was younger. It was this inspiration to be yourself even if that self was somewhat weird and spazzy he never once was anything other than the same goofball that always was. To me he is Cosmo the character that he played in Singin’ In The Rain. I’m going to watch I Love Melvin tomorrow, this year I’m making it a goal for myself to watch all the musicals that he was in. I also adore him in Out To Sea even though he has a bit of a minor part it was still one of my favorite parts of the movie. He makes just about everything better for me and I couldn’t be happier that I was introduced to him at such a young age.
My final one is probably right behind Rob Paulsen in terms of how much my life was changed thanks to him. He’s a man that everybody seems to have forgotten about but he worked for Disney during the 80’s and 90’s before he passed away. He was a songwriter who hit the bigtime when him and his writing partner made a little musical called Little Shop of Horrors. I am, of course talking about Howard Ashman. He gave me the confidence to always speak my mind in a sort of funny way. He didn’t take anybody’s bullshit and that spoke to a shy and socially awkward 15 year old me. I first learned about him through the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty. I knew his name but I never really thought about the man that wrote the music I grew up with. He was very opinionated and usually knew best about music. We certainly wouldn’t have Part Of Your World or the Beast’s complex backstory if he hadn’t been writing and working so closely with the crew.
That was my very long winded list of heroes. Do any of you have hero’s or people that have inspired you?
Okay hands down this movie is one that brought a tear to my eye by the end of it. It’s a very emotional movie if you have your own found family and that’s the core of this movie. It’s about what family means to each person and the message really hit me hard. I just wanted to say that this movie was the second of Kon’s movies to make me cry.
Tokyo Godfathers was a 2003 animated Christmas movie that follows three homeless people for one reason or another. Miyuki, a young 16 year old runaway, Gin an alcoholic ex-gambler sort of chronic liar and my favorite of the trio Hana an ex drag queen that was forced into homelessness when her boyfriend passed away. The three of them find a baby in a garbage can and they journey to find the mother of the baby girl that was thrown away. There are twists and turns and you learn about each of the characters and how they got from point A to point B where we meet them.
Just a warning this movie does not shy away from the struggles of homelessness. Most of the time our main trio goes hungry and they don’t have enough money to eat. There is also one scene where one of the main trio gets beaten up by a bunch of teens “Taking out the trash” when an older member of the homeless community passes away.
Watching all of these films has definitely changed my life. Satoshi Kon was a true genius and a master of the director’s chair even if sometimes he made things that left you scratching your head wondering what the hell you just watched. His movies are beautiful, mind bending at some points, tragic at others and strictly Satoshi Kon. I wish to hell Dream Machine could have been made since we all need more Kon movies in our lives and that one looked absolutely beautiful. Sadly it probably will never see the light of day as it would probably look differently than they would have wanted it too. I know now that nobody can parody Satoshi Kon, some might try and steal some of his scenes for their own personal benefit (I’m looking at you Christopher Nolan with your Inception that was a damn insult) but they can never replicate the magic that he created by putting a pencil to paper and creating characters that I will never forget.
Three down one more to go!! It’s New Years Day about 12:47 in the morning so this review might be really quick because I can’t say much about this movie for fear of spoiling everything. I also don’t fully understand everything that I just saw so it will take some rewatches for me to fully understand everything that Kon has said in that film alone.
Paprika is basically about a group of scientists that create a device that they call the DC mini that can be used by psychologists to cure people with depression and anxiety since it can see into their dreams and help the doctors to diagnose them better. Of course, somebody steals some of them so the object of the movie is trying to stop these horrifying dreams from becoming reality.
One of the things that I find interesting about all of Kon’s films is the use of scene cuts. This has been praised to high heaven so I’ll try to keep it short but the amount of time that he can jump from one scene to another while keeping it still fresh and new absolutely blows my mind.
Another thing that is typical for most Kon films is that the animation is absolutely mind meltingly both beautiful but at the same time absolutely terrifying when it wants to be. Since this movie is about dreams there are some moments when I was legitimately scared about how things would turn out. In terms of animation this is hands down his most creative work because you can basically do anything you want since most of the movie takes place in the dream world and you can create it any way you want it to be.
There are two separate love stories that I thoroughly adored and found both cute and well used. I loved most of these characters, especially the way that Paprika was written and the way that Detective Konakawa grows throughout the movie learning that his past doesn’t make him who he is today.
So all in all, this is probably a toss up of my favorite with Millennium Actress!! I love this movie so much it’s both beautiful and complex. I will definitely watch it multiple times during the next coming year.
Since yesterday I watched Millennium Actress I decided today I would watch both the mind bender movies that Satoshi Kon was able to make. I’m a natural at analyzing the shit out of movies so his films just seemed to be right up my alley as both a fan of movies in general and over-thinking of what they could really mean.
This one is going to be shorter than the others mostly because I don’t want to spoil anything for anybody that hasn’t seen the movie. It is brilliantly done just know that if for some reason Alfred Hitchcock were ever to make something animated this is probably the plot that he would have came up with since it reminded me a lot of Psycho especially in the last third of the movie. It does take a little while to get going but once you’re about 30 minutes in it’s just non stop questioning ever since then.
The basic story that I can give you is that you follow the life of an ex-pop idol named Mima Kirigoe who instead of being an idol wants to be taken seriously as a mature actress. However, she is also slowly but surely losing her mind and seeing visions of what she thinks is her other identity. Again, I don’t want to say too much for fear of running the absolute amazingness of this movie. It’s not better than Millennium Actress for me mostly because that one is more my type of movie but it is on my list. I put it at number 17 right after my favorite romance drama film The Painted Veil and right before Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I’ve recently (this morning) decided that I was going to watch all of the works of legendary anime director Satoshi Kon. I’ve always heard his works talked about in great praise and I wanted to finally see them for myself since I think I’m emotionally mature enough now that Perfect Blue won’t scar me for life since I’ve seen The Shining this year and thoroughly enjoyed that, a movie I once thought would be way too scary for me.
I decided to start simple with one of his lesser known (at least on Tumblr) works that I had been hearing nothing but astounding things about. The best way I can describe this movie is if Grand Budapest was animated and the two main leads kept missing each other after their first interaction. It’s an emotional tear jerker even if you are aware of how the movie ends. I went into the film knowing how it ended just from assuming at the beginning.
I decided that we should start with a basic summary of how this film plays out. It’s about two men who are directing a documentary about the life of a once in her prime actress Chiyoko Fujiwara that retired in her prime when most would have continued acting and became a recluse hermit in the mountains. About fifteen minutes of the movie we start to see the film as snippets of her past from the eyes of the two men working on the documentary. As the movie unfolds we realize that we aren’t sure what we’re seeing is her actual memories or another character that she has played in the past.
This is primarily a romance story with very little time dedicated to the love story. When Chiyoko was a young girl she saved a man from the police that was a painter. The man gives her a key that she tried her hardest to keep with her until the end of her days until having lost it for what she thought was for good.
I won’t say anything more but know that this is a movie that everybody needs to see!! I can’t recommend this film enough, for my first Satoshi Kon movie it sure changed my life and the way that I think about Japanese Animation in general. I hope that everyone can see this film at least once even if you watch it and decide that it isn’t for you. I will be making posts about all four of his major films and if that goes over well I’ll look at talking about Paranoia Agent his only anime television series that he got around to making before he tragically passed away.
So my dad isn’t huge into anime, unless it’s the couple episodes of Space Dandy that he’s watched or half of Steins;Gate that we never really got around to finishing he’s not that into it and doesn’t understand why I talk about it so much. There’s one big exception to the rule though, my dad loves Miyazaki movies!! There’s no need to really push too hard for a viewing of Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service or our favorite Howl’s Moving Castle. I brought up one day in the car why that was other than the sheer artistry and storytelling factor that he loved them so much and he brought up a very interesting argument. He told me that he loved the way that Miyazaki almost always writes stories with a strong female heroine in the center instead of a man. I’ve always loved his female characters, especially Kiki and Sophie since I relate the most to them. I personally always get sucked into the way that he writes a female character. They aren’t just strong but they also have weaknesses as well. Kiki worries that she’s too different and too strange from the other girls around her, Sophie questions whether or not she’s attractive to men and has a lot of insecurities that border that, Chihiro has basically never worked a day in her life but always tries her hardest to prove herself, Satsuki and Mei are girls that have to struggle with not only a vast age difference but a sick mother too and a dad who works a lot, Sheeta is too mild mannered and soft spoken and needs to learn to stand up for herself and so many others these are just my favorites. I’m a natural shy girl who loves to look at these films as more than just movies over analyzing the hell out of them. I feel drawn to these girls, especially to Kiki because I’ve always felt too strange and out of my element around other people mostly girls. Funnily enough my favorite personally isn’t even one that was created by Miyazaki-san himself but another director Yoshifumi Kondo who created the character Shizuku and put her into a young adult romance movie. Shizuku is a natural introvert with only a few friends to her name but loves fantasy novels. She tends to be overly emotional and thinks a little bit too much about what the little things could possibly mean. She spends a good first chunk of the movie trying to figure out who could possibly be checking out certain books in the library before her. I think that this is one of those characters that I will always relate to despite being perpetually single.
So let’s talk about every other character that I grew up with since middle school that obviously wasn’t in the first episode.
-We’ll start with my absolute favorite from the original show Hatori Sohma. Kent Williams came back to being his VA and I have never been happier about anything in my entire life!! He is Hatori to me even though I know that he has done different characters that one has always spoke to me on a personal level. His deadpan humor and the way that he brought the character to life has gotten me through a lot of rough days in middle school and high school.
-Momiji’s voice actress, Mikaela Krantz is doing a really good job I think for taking this character in a different direction vocally. It took me a really long damn time to get used to my childhood favorite character spoken in a really thick German accent but eventually I got used to it.
-Justin Cook as Hatsuharu is back at it again voicing everyone’s favorite soft boy with a temper of a thousand suns. I have always loved the way that he portrayed him in the original. This sort of just naturally soft spoken way until you get him angry and then he can flip on you like a dime. Just perfection.
-Speaking of characters with a natural aggression, let’s talk about Tia Ballard as Kagura. A character that no matter what has always left me with a sort of bad taste in my mouth. I think that any of the Sohma’s who are in relationships with another Sohma to be a little bit gross but she was just never my cup of tea. I think that Tia does a great job voicing her though through her mood swings to where she’s kind to the moment she’s beating the utter S**** out of Kyo.
-Christopher effing Sabot. Enough said. I’m just kidding, Ayame is one of those characters that I thought was done so much better in the manga. I think that he had more of an arch then in the original show where Yuki and Ayame actually do mend their relationship. Needless to say Christopher is a legend for voice acting and this is one of my favorite characters of his. I never fail to laugh at his overly exuberant nature. The little moments even with the comedy is something so important to me in a show full of drama and angst it’s nice to have him yelling about he’s a bottom all the way to help lighten the mood.
-The same voice actress for Kisa came back and that just makes me feel so good inside. She is still the same soft spoke adorable tiger that I grew to love and relate to in middle school. Not much to be said because not much has changed aside from the fact that she got older.
-Luci Christian plays Hiro here and she does a really good job playing him. I have always had a bit of a mixed bag relationship with him but I think that she does play his character well with the emotions that a twelve year old boy would go through.
-Mike Mcfarland really changed the way that I think about the character of Ritsu this time around. I have never really enjoyed him because of the way that his drag was played for laughs and comedy. But, thankfully this changed here and he has become one of my all time favorites. I relate to his overly apologetic nature and feel like them a lot of the time where he just seems to constantly think that everything that goes wrong is his fault.
-Everybody else has been doing a really great job. Especially Jad Saxon Hana and Elizabeth Maxwell Ou since there backstories were very emotional for me. I was shocked and shooketh to my core hearing Aaron Dismuke will be playing one of my favorite characters Kakeru from the manga. I think that he is going to do an absolutely fabulous job playing this lovable goofball with yet again another tragic backstory. I was not at all surprised to hear that Caitlin Glass will be playing Machi since she is being a badass as an ADR director and she did both with Ouran as well both directing and playing Haruhi. So I knew she had to be one of the major roles and she was really the only one that hasn’t been announced yet. I was still really glad to hear her playing one of my all time favorite manga characters and finally getting to see this dynamic duo in the second season is something that I will be counting the days to.
While at first it sounded a bit odd to me I grew to love this dub just as much as the original. Getting to hear Laura Bailey do Tohru again even if it’s a sprightly higher pitch than I’m used to is still just as beautiful as it was when I was thirteen. Eric Vale is still the softspoken Rat boy that was my favorite when I was a little girl at a slightly more raspier tone probably to reference his childhood illnesses. It took a while for John Burgmire to find his way back into the lovable asshole that is Shigure but right around the tent scene he came back with a vengeance. I’ve always loved how he played Shigure he was one of my favoirtes mostly because he made me laugh. And of course, everybody’s favorite cat boy Jerry Jewel is still our loving angry Kyo my favorite now that I’m older.
I can’t wait for them to bring Chris Sabet back as Ayame and see him go through his whole arch, Kent Williams as my childhood crush Hatori Sohma and many other in the future episodes!!
