GRACE NOTES is a poetic documentary narrative that explores the landscapes and communities of North America’s New Hampshire and Vermont. The work has been framed by the words of American poet, Robert Frost, and his Pulitzer prize winning book titled, ‘New Hampshire: a Poem with Notes and Grace Notes.’ These playful poems and Frost’s gentle mocking of these two obscure states, has been a baseline guide to the work.
“Just specimens is all New Hampshire has,
One each of everything as in a show-case
Which naturally she doesn’t care to sell.”
-Robert Frost, ‘New Hampshire: A Poem with Notes and Grace Notes’
These lines have echoed throughout the project and have translated into the images of the people and landscapes photographed. The environmental portraits, the rivers, the cabins, are all framed as though they were in a “show-case” - inviting the viewer to observe the characters and the beauty of this bewitching place. Traveling between the coast of Plymouth and the mystical White Mountains near the borders of Canada, in 2017 and 2018, this selection is just one portion of a long series celebrating the isolated countryside of North America, in hopes of capturing its mysticism and the timelessness that surrounds it.
