Even though it is awash in despair, the sheer romance of dying for someone because you don’t see yourself existing after their death is strangely rapturous.
Gaon in his confession to Soo Hyun says this:
This is the culmination of years’ worth of feelings but Gaon doesn’t say ‘if you cease to exist I would too’.
But right after he feels he’s “lost” Yohan by betraying him we get this:
Yohan is not dead here, is the guilt of betrayal so much for Gaon that he’d rather die? 🥺
Again, after he hears that Yohan has “died” in prison he goes on to do this:
He’s essentially ready to kill himself and take the man who set him up to betray Yohan. Gosh Gaon-ah how you must be hurting 😢
Eventually, during the final trial where Yohan claims Gaon to be the Hero and decides to sacrifice himself while blowing up the bad guys, Gaon is flabbergasted because he just got Yohan back and this is what he says:
Gaon must be emotionally knackered by this point and it’s literally the last straw! He can’t see himself surviving in a world where the love of his life, whom he misunderstood till the very end and betrayed, commits suicide while claiming Gaon to be a Hero. Gaon feels unworthy of any praise and considers dying beside Yohan to be more honourable and fair.
This is just twisting the knife further in my heart 💔 Oh Gaon-ah…
In conclusion: Yohan is more precious to Gaon than his own life and he expressed that no less than THREE TIMES in the last 2 episodes. It also indicates the depth of his ardour for Yohan when compared to his friendly love for Soo Hyun.
No wonder the finale is Gaon’s love letter to Yohan.
