Incredible places, amazing photos: Scottish Highlands
Flower-shop, Brussels, designed by Paul Hankar, XIX century.
This is literally the perfect, most fitting sort of thing to put in the window of an Art Nouveau front like this. One of the things I enjoyed about Brussels was the Art Nouveau architecture- not something you see in Britain much.
Japanese Traditional Dolls | An Exhibition
We were lucky enough to drop by the Vietnamese Women’s Museum one of our days travelling around Hanoi. I have some shots of a very precious collection that I adore, my absolute favourite of the lot, that I will be sharing soon. But meanwhile, enjoy these!
Organized by the Japan Foundation Centre for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, Vietnamese Women’s Museum and Embassy of Japan in Hanoi in celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013 and International Women’s Day, this exhibition showcased 250 Japanese dolls, including Edo-Kimekomi Dolls, dolls dressed in kimonos, dolls depicting characters from traditional Japanese performing arts like Noh and Kabuki, Hakata dolls or clay dolls, and Kokeshi dolls with their unique character.
“Dolls” have been part of everyday life in Japan since ancient times as they reflect the customs of Japan and the aspirations of its people with centuries-old distinctive regional attitudes. Japanese dolls now can be categorized in many ways according to the techniques and material used to create them, as well as the themes and shapes.
Sadayakko as Musume Dojoji 1907 by Blue Ruin 1
Via Flickr:
The actress and former geisha Sadayakko, performing one of her most famous roles, the Kabuki dance Musume Dojoji (The Maiden at Dojoji Temple), a character that transforms from a sweet young maiden to a demented personification of jealousy, then dies of a broken heart.
Ever the rebel, after her retirement to rural Japan in 1917 to found a silk company, selling under the brand names Yakko Meisen and Yakko Silk, she was frequently seen riding around the countryside on a large, red motorcycle wearing a pair of red-leather motorcycle boots.
