When you keep getting easily distracted while writing:
me sitting at my desk blatantly updating my resume and not giving a good fuck
I hate it whenever a psychological or sociological term goes viral and people overuse and decontextualise it to the extent it has no meaning in six months. like. that term was necessary and now its wrung dry. we no longer have the tools to discuss the phenomenon that term was describing because its lost all credibility. who can take “gaslighting” seriously anymore? this shit is deliberate and borderline malicious.
can i just state that this isn’t academic gatekeeping, this is specifically about how academic terms used by victims and marginalised people in and OUT of academia to describe their experiences are appropriated and meme-ified as a way to mock them and then that mockery becomes mainstream and the term loses all meaning
my boss’ ugly abusive behavior is like the #1 reason why I’m leaving this shithole and istg if she asks me why I’m telling her to her face
I don’t get paid nearly enough for any of this
y’all I might have a much better private sector job in communications coming at an education services tech company that’s fully remote thanks to my sister’s friend, please send good vibes
I like how like… with every new piece of Star Wars media that paints Tatooine as more and more of a shithole where everyone is a murderous crimelord the funnier it gets that Luke Skywalker just grew up on this planet completely normal.
Like I’m envisioning a normal day at Tosche Station where a cyborg biker and a Twi'lek prostitute are stabbing each other over a bag of spice and then it just pans over to this fresh-faced nancy boy sitting at a table sipping on his blue milk going “oh golly, I sure do love power converters!”
the boba fett show is a goddamn feast for enjoyers of hot older ppl it’s an attack on my bisexuality every week between TM, Ming Na and fuckin twi’lek Jennifer Beals jfc
take my bones
to a place,
they don’t belong
see shit like this is the reason that it’s so hard to turn my back on this website. Where else, pray tell, are you going to find this kind of quality nonsense.
honestly like i get the poly(nesian) vs poly(amorous) thing, and n(on)b(lack) vs n(on)b(inary), and i’ll change to polyam or ply or enby if asked to avoid confusion, but i also need yall to know that like…its okay for one abbreviation to have multiple meanings. theres only 26 letters and we can reuse some of them, no one is “stealing” anything.
Animal Crossing did not attack Air Conditioners.
now that almost 300 people have agreed with my great points, i feel the need to disclose that this was prompted by a post about a physics professor writing “BDE: 69” on the whiteboard
it doesn’t help at all that like every beatles song was done better in a cover
even when it’s not Black artists…Siouxsie’s version of Dear Prudence turned a pedestrian song into goth gay yearning it’s a masterpiece
Behold my gloriously retro inaccurate Tyrannosaurus music box, playing “Yesterday” by the Beatles. When fully wound the song will play for a surprisingly long time, becoming ever slower and sadder.
not gonna lie, i was a fully grown adult when i learned Yesterday was by the Beatles and not Boyz II Men and I wish I could go back to that time
I thought it was En Vogue until I was like 36
i think part of the problem w media criticism on here is sometimes people have a hard time understanding that not every story is a 1:1 with how you should go about criticism. like, an evil queen getting redeemed in a princess movie for toddlers would be very different from a dictator getting redeemed in a dystopian novel. those things do not require the same amount of engagement about the implications of such an action, and they mean different things for the story. and there are certainly things in between too, this isnt a “one extreme or the other” situation
i wasnt gonna say anything but everyone and their mom is making this about a specific cartoon in the notes, but i have no intention of actually talking about that show specifically. its just that i feel like a lot of them missed the part where i said “this isnt a “one extreme or the other” situation” and are just using this as an excuse for why kids shows deserve no critique at all and actually the show did nothing wrong.
and i feel like by saying this people are going to assume “oh so its the OTHER extreme! its evil!” and miss the point a second time. because the point was never “kids shows shouldn’t be criticized at all, and trying to do so is stupid.” because those are shows with heavy-handed morals being broadcasted to a very impressionable young demographic. im not even saying you have to criticize them more lightly, just differently. you cant apply a one-size fits all critique for all pieces of media out there, thats just not how it works.
target demographic aside, you have to actually look at the story its telling. think about its themes and the way theyre presented, and understand what the characters represent symbolically rather than a literal interpretation; because those characters arent real, they only exist in a metaphorical world. the aforementioned hypothetical evil queen from a princess movie most likely doesn’t represent any actual tyrannical dictator, you shouldnt be taking it all at face value. the moral is more likely just “dont be mean and forgive your friends on the playground”
but that doesnt mean that a princess movies CANT represent exactly what they appear to be either, for example the stepmother from cinderella was a character that represented an abusive mother, so redeeming her wouldve been a bad move for the story, making its narrative weaker and its message problematic. and kids media usually makes it very very blatant when there is and isnt a metaphor, so if you ONLY watch stuff made for kids you dont really exercise your ability to discern that on your own. so nuance gets lost and you end up getting stuck on a black-and-white mentality on criticism as a whole
you have to look at things on a case by case basis and just… think about what the characters represent. and i know when we talk about character representation on here we usually mean it in regards to representing diversity, but EVERY character in a story represents something for the story too, and sometimes its more figurative than literal (similar to how we talk about coding in lgbt+ contexts, if that comparison makes what i mean clearer).
the events of fictional stories are not real, but stories are real. they still mean something in the real world, they were written by a real person with the intent to evoke something in a real audience. theyre like a mirror reflecting our reality back at us, symbolic by nature, we see ourselves through them.
when you engage with them you have to think about what characters and their actions represent for our world within the context of the story, rather than what their actions would literally mean in the real world. otherwise you end up thinking that a bullet point list of problematic things a character has done is actual criticism on its own. because thats how we would frame a callout post for a real life person, not a narrative tool whose actions are meant to carry a story forward and convey a message through it.
my whole kitchen smells like simmering stock from leftover costco rotisserie chicken hashtag blessed
ok but gisele and aymeric going to a fancy diplomatic dinner, and splitting off with merlwyb and raubahn afterward 👀
…did…did Merlwyb just ask me out on a date
Melee is automatically winning solely because giving orders to the Company of Heroes is so much fun
i forgot how much I loved them all
yeah having just finished them these were easily my sleeper pick for best role quests, which is admittedly damning with faint praise, but these were actually pretty enjoyable and not just “eh, okay”
we got more development for Merlwyb and Limsa wrt the old racist treatment of the Sahagin and are on the road to peace
got to hang out with the Company of Heroes
and the boss fight was the best out of the lot
I mean we got to fight alongside Brayflox come tf on
My final ranking
1. Melee (decent!)
2. Tank (boring, wasted opportunity for Gridania development like Limsa got)
3. Caster (offensive, plot holes, boring fight)
4. Ranged (offensive, but fun fight)
5. Healer (offensive, people acting stupid for the sake of the plot)
honestly 3-5 really are all about the same level of terrible and which one I think is the worst prolly depends on the day you ask me but all three are scraping bottom for some of the worst writing in the game tbqh
