Every year… Every damn year…
Tags like this are the reason I tend to donate extra to AO3 when I can afford to.
Honestly, I don’t even care if people I know donate. AO3 is designed so that a few generous patrons can make a nice thing exist for everyone… But holy shit do I wish tumblr would learn how websites and companies work because it is important to know what motivates them.
On AO3, MORE TRAFFIC IS NOT BETTER HOLYFUCK. That’s only true when traffic = more ad revenue or a better pitch to venture capitalists or something.
The OTW (who run AO3) are a REGISTERED NON PROFIT!!!! This means that literally they do not make money that isn’t put into running the site and paying the VERY few employees who work for them (if there are. Idk if the OTW has paid employees. I just know that most registered non-profits have a few while everyone else is volunteers. But some are 100% volunteer, though that is rare).
There are no ads. There are no “pay to use” features like there are on almost every other hosting website. And yet they are one of the most well organized, easy to use, and thoughtfully and fairly moderated websites on the internet. They even offer the code to make your own version of the archive, completely for free!!!
Y'all need to learn the difference between a genuinely good non-profit organization (some that are run like “companies”, yes) and a multi billion dollar conglomerate corporation. They are not the same.
Just because AO3 asks for donations doesn’t mean suddenly you have to pay to use the site. AO3 has literally ZERO stock in if you use their site or not. As long as enough generous fans with money give to them, even the broke ass fans, such as myself, can still enjoy fanfic and the ability to filter out everything we don’t like and also search for our very specific niche wants to our hearts content. With no ads. No paywalls. Ever.
