My take on the #SailorMoonRedraw challenge! I was a bit conflicted whether to draw her more in her classic anime/cute style, or whether to try something more realistic. Lotta pressure on myself, but hopefully I’ve done the iconic character justice!
Even though I’m a whole year late, I HAD to do the challenge and draw her as she was such a pivotal character in my art journey – she was the very first thing I learned to draw when I was a kid! If it wasn’t for my sister teaching me how to draw her in those ‘How to Draw Manga in 5 Steps’ I might never have gotten to where I am today. So to my sister Kim, and to Usagi Tsukino, thank you! 👊🏼
I didn’t think I’d ever write anything like that. I saw a similar entry, but I have to comment. I DON’T LIKE neither JR (I more or less like Junjou Egoist, although they have their problems too, but seem to be the most normal couple for me) nor SIH. But SIH seemed much more normal to me than JR. Less problematic (because let’s be honest that her anime and anime / manga by most BL authors are problematic as fuck). Especially when it comes to the main pair in SIH. When I read both manga, especially the last chapters, my shock was unlimited. How could your own universe be so destroyed? And treat the fans? Let’s explain something. I never respected the Usagi x Misaki couple. Partly because of the sexual harassment (molestation) scene at the beginning. Yes it was not romanticized or in any way justified in the manga, but it just is NOT NORMAL. Now when I see that this couple has a healthy relationship now, they trust each other, they help each other. And they really changed so much, I still don’t like them. Excuse me. And now about the last chapters of SIH. I am simply shocked that the author did something like that. She destroyed the ENTIRE relationship of the couple with one move. HOW? Every fan probably knows what I’m talking about. THIS IS SICK. In addition, in one chapter, Ritsu is even blamed. Of course, this doesn’t happen in real life. But I can’t imagine what fans are feeling now, who have liked this series for a long time, especially this couple. How can you disrespect people who like / support / even pay real money for your manga? When Namakura and other yaoi/ BL writers understand that rape is not a fucking part of the plot for a romantic comedy. When? Thanks for reading my soul cry. P.S. By the way, I would like to say more on this subject, although it has been mentioned many times. And I’m glad yaoi fandom is slowly but surely stopping romanticizing toxic behaviors.
P.S.S. English is not my native language. Sry
There’s some uhh BIG topics being discussed so if you don’t want to read about it then probably scroll past.
I won’t justify sexual assault in anyway or form, it really shouldn’t be romanticized or made fun of in a story but I feel for JR there’s the time period you need to look at. This was like the EARLY 2000s and if you’re familiar with early 2000s yaoi then you know it’s a hot dumpster fire. The whole scene with Misaki and Akihiko shouldn’t have happened at the start but I really feel that it was added to appeal to fans during that era of yaoi. Of course I would have preferred that she didn’t add this but since Nakamura really never repeated this again in JR I’m able to look beyond it.
With SIH I whole-heartedly agree that the whole Act 28 nonsense and even previous instances should have not been part of the story. It really seems tacky when love rivals like Nao do it and even worse when Takano, the man who is supposedly supposed to end up with Ritsu, is doing it. However, the thing is that SIH has been going on for 15 volumes and fans at this point are just in for the ride. I can tell from being a part of this community for around half a year that many people can acknowledge the flaws of both stories and still continue to get enjoyment out of these characters. It’s problematic and for me personally my enjoyment has gone down a little bit but do I still laugh my ass off when I read any SIH chapter, hell yes.
Welcome to the SIH/JR fandom, we’re just in for the ride baby.
I am not in the SIH fandom, so I’ll stay silent about that. About JJR: I am also not a fan od putting such scenes without the proper handle of the topic. Unfortunetely, fans wanted it in the 2000s as someone mentioned and Nakamura obv wanted her manga to sell.
Also: I think nobody should act on the victim’s behalf and Misaki himself decided to stay. I won’t be saying “Akihiko is an angel”, he isn’t. But I think his explanation is important: that he comes from a broken, mentally abusive household, he was also himself sexually abused (and there are survivors being very active sexually later in order to cope with trauma and restore control), he told Misaki that he has serious problems with himself, that the latter should leave him and Usagi can even buy him a seperate house if needed. Again, it’s not to shift blame etc, but I think it’s crucial to get the full picture and notice that thankfully, Usagi never done it again.
