happy 212th birthday, edgar 🖤
alright so, it’s a bit weird celebrating the birthday of someone who turns 212 today, but i thought i’d make a little post about it.
on january 19, 1809, edgar poe was born. edgar was born in boston, and was later fostered by john allan and his wife, frances. i promise this won’t be a sad, sappy post about edgar’s childhood years.
during his childhood, edgar was inspired by english poet, lord byron. edgar began writing poetry at the age of 7. fun fact: the first collection of poems he published, tamerlane and other poems, featured poems edgar had written when he was 14.
edgar knew from an early age that he wanted to become a writer. he was one of the first american writers to earn a living off of just writing alone, and he built the foundations of the mystery, horror, and sci-fi genres.
my point is, edgar had no idea how much not only his poetry, but his short stories and his characters would inspire so many to come. even now, over 100 years later, his stories are still inspiring people.
wherever he is, i hope he knows the impact he’s made, and while he wasn’t able to achieve everything he envisioned, he still accomplished more than most american writers at the time. so with this all being said: happy birthday, edgar.
