wouldn’t want you to see the dark harbinger of justice burst into tears.
are you disappointed they're going with the more modern Selina outfit in The Long Halloween animation because it made me a little sad lol her look is so distinctive there and I miss it :(
Yes, I am. I don’t like to complain about costumes and I have no problem with the black catsuit in general, but like can you give me SOMETHING??? Every media for the last 20 years has defaulted to the black suit to point where they’re just throwing out any plain ole black catsuit and calling it a day. Half the time it looks so drab and boring and nothing special. They can at least try to put some effort into it.
Where’s the style? Where’s the flair?? Where’s the je ne sais quoi??? I get that they probably think that the purple suit is too costumey for modern audiences, but I’m sure they can do something to modernize it a little.
Batman and Catwoman in Batman: The Long Halloween Part One (2021)
Batman: The Long Halloween Part One (2021) trailer
So far in the (NON-CANON) Batman & Catwoman maxiseries, Tom King has really leaned into the idea that Selina is a bad girlfriend, really homicidal, not a great mother, and possibly has a romantic history with the Joker. As if Tom King's take all along, has always been that because Catwoman used to be a villain, she's the weak link in the relationship. Just curious, how do you reconcile King's BatCat era? The marriage proposal, the engagement, the Clois double date. Is it meaningless to you now?
Answer below the cut.
I think that I’ve made my feelings on this very clear at this point, and there isn’t anymore that I can say about this that I didn’t say back in October when you asked me something similar.
Tom King’s “batcat era” is not something I need to reconcile, because this is who he’s always been and I accepted that a long time ago. He never cared about or believed in this relationship or the potential to tell this story. He just saw an opportunity to exploit a passionate and desperate fan-base, ingratiated himself into said fan-base by telling them what they wanted to hear, and continues to string them along to this day. The writing’s been on the wall for years. The only difference between then and now is Dan Didio isn’t around to shoulder all the blame anymore.
Once you can accept that all that good stuff was just part of the grift, you can cut your losses, move on with your life, and stop caring about what goes on at DC Comics.
I wandered over after a few years and it’s like I never left. Thank you for continuing to post batcat. My original otp. Guess you never get over your first love ;)
Thank you! That’s a very kind thing to say. To be completely honest I don’t really see myself running this blog for very much longer but, I hope that in my time on this site I’ve contributed a little something to this fandom for people to enjoy.
Howd you feel about ton kings run. Wedding aside like the beach especially the beach
What do you think would be an awesome origin story for Catwoman?
I’m pretty open to ideas (barring anything that has to do with using abuse as a motivator or even remotely alludes to YO), but in my mind it would be kind of like a hybrid of the movies Focus and Mission Impossible Rogue Nation. Selina learns the art of thieving from a group of sophisticated grifters and hones her skills. She later returns to Gotham as an enigma, where not even readers can be sure whose side she’s on.
IDK something like that.
To help answer ur question about interaction between Catwoman and Two Face:
I know these aren’t the comics but In the Batman Arkham games they were antagonistic towards in each other which is most notable in Arkham City
I know about the Arkham games. They also interacted in the Telltale Games. The question was about comic book interactions, which is why it wasn’t mentioned.
This blog has been a constant inspiration for me. Thank you so much for this. I was wondering if you get any recommendations on comics that portrayed Selina’s relationship with other Batman’s rogues?
Catwoman is definitely more of a loner, and doesn’t really closely associate with the other Rogues. It’s more like sometimes her goals have aligned with theirs, but sometimes it’s straight up adversarial. It’s a pretty controversial decision but per PF canon Catwoman was a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains for a short time. I think I’ve made my thoughts on the GCS pretty clear at this point, so need to beat a dead horse. Here’s a compilation of Catwoman’s notable interactions with other Rogues over the years.
Black Mask is probably the closest Catwoman has come to having an arch nemesis.
Catwoman and Riddler seem mostly friendly here, and it’s the only time they almost seem like friends.
Again; I’ve talked a lot about my feelings on Catwoman’s relationship with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy in the past. Dead horse– so I’m not going to go over it here. In case anyone missed it and is curious you can read about it here. Below are notable interactions.
Like I said Catwoman doesn’t really interact with the other Rogues, but occasionally she finds herself on their side. Some examples are:
Carmine Falcone/The Falcone Family
The al Ghuls
I couldn’t think of anything all that notable for the rest. Catwoman has worked for/with Penguin sporadically over the years, but I couldn’t think of anything earth-shattering that I thought was worth mentioning. Wish Catwoman and Two Face interacted more! I think they’d have a very interesting dynamic.
*I think that this is the only semblance of anything that even resembles a real friendship between Catwoman and Harley, and I like that they were able to use their experiences to empathize with each other in an emotionally cathartic way. But I think it needs to be said that the comparison between the problems in Catwoman and Batman’s relationships and Harley and the Joker’s is purely because it’s being presented from Harley’s perspective; not because their relationships are actually in any way comparable.
**I’m mentioning these for purely informational purposes; not because I endorse them or think they are good.
Hi, I read in previous posts that you are not following the current issue of the Batman series. I read edition 101, from what I read (I'm Brazilian, I understand a little English), Batman and Catwoman are still together. If you decide to read it, I believe you will like it (especially the last page).
No, thank you. I respect that you and others want continue to read and support DC Comics. There are very good and justifiable reasons for why I’ve chosen not to. Please respect that.
what is your favorite origin story interpretation of catwoman? i think ( if my memory serves me right ) dc has changed her origin quite a few times throughout history?
I’ve answered this question before, but I really don’t like any them and I think a modern Catwoman writer should really strive to do a complete retelling of her origins that is a lot more empowering and less misogynistic than what’s been done in the past.
Do you think if Selina and Bruce were to practice any BDSM-related activities then Selina was the dominating one? It makes sense to me because Bruce has a lot of control elsewhere in his life and just the idea of Selina dominating Bruce I find to be sooooo kinky and hot. What do you think?
I guess it’s possible.
Bruce/Selina + touching
“You can’t tell the story without [Catwoman] because there’s something about the way in which her gray hat, kind of morally ambiguous philosophy finally gives Batman someone he can relate to; finally, weirdly becomes the yin to his yang. And that connection, that spark between them takes some of the somberness off of his character.” —JONATHAN NOLAN
“And after all of this isolation that he’s had, he’s suddenly meeting this woman who he finds funny; he finds her comical. And it really impacts him in terms of human contact; somebody other than Alfred who he can just be himself with. She doesn’t give a damn that he’s Bruce Wayne and she’s not intimidated by him when he’s Batman. And it’s kind of an affront to him but it’s wonderful because nobody ever treats him that way.“ —CHRISTIAN BALE
