Robin, we know him, we love him, we call him a cave-man… but what does that mean exactly? what sorts of technology would Robin have known when he was alive?
To start, here’s some things we know about Robin:
- he lived alongside and preyed upon mammoths
- he was not monogamous
- he followed some sort of religion (moon worship)
- he and his society were capable of creating monuments
-wore a garment made from furs, likely some sort of canine (probably wolf), was likely a hunter rather than a farmer because of this.
- he lived and died on the land-mass now known as Great Britain.
-I also assume that Robin is a modern human (Homo sapiens), mostly so that his flirting with Mary isn’t super weird.
So what can we deduce from this information?
Modern humans (Homo sapiens) first populated the British isles around 40,000 BC ( 38,000 years ago) so Robin Can’t be older than that.
Mammoths went extinct from the Isles at about 9,000 BC (11,000 years ago) so Robin Can’t be any younger than that.
That’s still a super wide range, so let’s work a bit more on narrowing the lower range of Robin’s possible age.
Humans in Britain, in a culture known as the Creswellian, got really into killing Mammoths in 13,000 BC, when they had the tools to do so efficiently, so we can probably bring down Robin’s possible temporal range to 13,000-9,000 BC, and because Robin was a hunter-gatherer rather than farmer, we can guess he was likely at the earlier end of this range.
So what would Robin’s life been like?
Robin lived during the mesolithic of “middle Stone Age”.
Despite being a “cave-man”, Robin would have lived in a wooden hut, in a sort of town or village with other hunters who would work together to take down large game. Other activities in Robin’s village could have been creative ventures such as rock carving and polishing, stone-chipping, making clothing from furs, and even early pottery (I think Robin would have been really good at making little pots in his spare time!).
Robin would have likely built the Moonah Ston complex with his the rest of his village, and they would have all participated in rituals surrounding it together.
domestic dogs were also known by this period, so it’s very possible Robin could have had a dog, which would add immensely to his wholesomeness and is now part of my headcanon.
