Kotaku making a rare good post (even if many others have said it already) - the transition from forums to Discord is the transition from an open, archived, searchable internet to a fleeting, cloistered, and real-time-only internet.
When you realize in hindsight the Megatokyo Forums were peak internet infrastructure…
Just to add:The loss of Groovy reinforced an anxiety that I’ve been feeling for a long time: The Discord we have right now cannot and will not last forever. Our server has a new music bot, Rythm, that’s about as good as Groovy, but for how long?
I’ve been thinking this ever since they added a nitro gifting button right next to the picture button.
I like discord today. I know it won’t last.
You know the next however-many months is going to be filled with people trying to get any scrap of info about the Obi-Wan show out of anyone who worked on it but no one’s going to ask the IMPORTANT questions. Like, for example, how many moments of Wistful Meaningful Yearning-Filled Eye Contact does it have?
Well, I mean, REALLY. 😄
via:@forcearama #star wars: where would you even have gotten the idea that this show would have such content#star wars: where in the past have we ever led you to believe these characters were having some sort of tragic love affair#me: nice try guys but i’ve seen the movies
#AND THE SHOW (via @survivethefall)
My husband and I made eye contact midway through our first viewing of TCW at some particularly “Could Be Read As Platonic, But That Really Sort of Feels Like We’re Being Generous Here” moment, and he said something like “…so I guess they’ve just decided to steer right into it now, huh?” and I cracked up.
Startled shouts filled the air as the ray shields dropped suddenly. Something in the air flickered and suddenly a person in imperial uniform was standing over the fallen guard, knife in hand.
Ardun’s heart skipped a beat. Kye'lin stood, wounded, bloodied, the telltale bruises around their throat spoke of a Sith’s tender mercies and they favored their left leg. The cipher’s cold blue eyes flicked around the room in panic. Ardun stepped forward, holding out his hands so it could be seen that he lacked a weapon. Kye'lin’s eyes focused on him- and a measure of relief showed through.
“If you’re going to kill me, do it fast…” they scarcely whispered. Ardun touched Kye'lin’s wrist lightly and they winced, withdrew, knife clattering to the ground. Ardun’s hand ghosted over their chin, tilting their head up to meet his eyes.
“Who did this to you?” Ardun demanded, calling upon the force to pull the medkit near. Kye'lin flinched at his touch, but didn’t recoil. Ardun half-carried, half-dragged Kye'lin to the nearest chair- the soldier who had been sitting in it, quickly vacating the seat.
Bandaging cuts, setting broken bones (including that wrist) kept Ardun busy, all the while he kept his hands in their line of sight.
“Kye'lin,” Ardun said-signed, “Who did this to you?”
“Lord Razer was not pleased with my performance with the bombing markers. He has demanded that I poison this entire base. I don’t want–” Kye'lin’s hands shake as they sign back.
“I’m going to kill him,” Ardun swore under his breath, “I will rip him limb from limb and use his pelt for a rug. Nobody hurts my kids.”
Idk if this happens to y'all but I find it terribly funny when I am reading older books (i.e. LOTR or the Sherlock Holmes novels) because the world looked a lot different back then. They used to use the words gay/gaily and the like to mean happy, cheerful etc. Whereas for us it most often means a member of the LGBTQ+ community. So it just makes me laugh whenever I read someone as speaking laughing gaily.
Similarly, I have found they used to write much closer male friendships, because before the assumption was that was ALL there could be. Nowadays many authors, in an attempt to be very much NO HOMO, make men over masculine and their relationship with other men shallow at best. So, this leads to a double appreciation for older books because a) less toxic male-male relationships if read as a friendship or b) you can read same-sex subtext/romance into pretty much everything - both that which was purposeful (Oscar Wilde) and that which was not (Tolkien).
Wait it’s spelled gaily?
Technically speaking, it can be spelled both ways! They are semantically related adverbs. However, gaily is the most common form of that word.
The reason for this is that gayly, in addition to the shared meaning with gaily (joyfully, cheerfully, merrily, etc.) was also used to mean in a “homosexual manner” a loooooong time ago, which is precisely why it is the much rarer form of the word and almost never seen in older literature and now is mostly considered a dated word.
on one level he knows star trek is fiction but its like hes realizing he wont get his letter from hogwarts all over again
It’s kinda funny cause Vulcans do exist in DC they even have a lantern named Saarek
Isn’t… Isn’t that Spock’s dad. IS SPOCK’S DAD A GREEN LANTERN
I love desire paths. There’s something so wonderous about seeing an echo of humanity. Depending on it’s location, a desire path can mean so many different things.
In a city, like the pic above, they represent rebellion, and efficiency. The messiness of humanity. We like to imagine we’re oh so logical and neat so we design our cities to be logical and neat an then real humans literally trample on that idea. The ego required to think you can design something perfect that checks every box. Life is all about compromise and patching stuff when some new problem arises. Though people have certainly tried! Ohio state univeristy let students carve their desire paths, and then paved them over. It looks pretty artsy.
Some people will try to discourage desire paths, but this is almost always going to fail.
Eventually, people just have to accept them. Humans are too dang stubborn.
Certain desire paths are just adorable. A 0.5 second time saver. You just can’t design for maximum efficiency, humans will always find shortcuts!
Though on occasion a desire path can actually be the least efficient way…especially if you’re superstitious.
In a wilder area, such as below, they show us the curiosity of humans. A desire path somewhere natural often tells you there’s something interesting just ahead. (Though remember some ecosystems are fragile and will suffer if trampled! Stick to paths in these sorts of areas)
And how about desire stairs? I always think these look so cool. We get see humans determination to climb, to traverse every kind of terrain.
And for something really crazy…a desire path used for centuries will create a ‘holloway’
All of these pics are off the Desirepath subreddit, check them out for more examples! And many thanks to the users who submitted these photos.
some of you think ‘nuanced’ only means ‘morally grey’ and I’m here to tell you that actually straight up good characters can still be nuanced and unapologetically evil characters can still be nuanced. the character doesn’t have to be an anti hero or morally dubious to have depth. they don’t even have to feel sorry about their crimes to have depth.
I LOVE EVERY SINGLE INCH OF THIS, LET ME YELL ABOUT WHY.
Of course I was going to have feelings about Poe talking about Leia talking about Obi-Wan, about how he died fighting evil and that the Jedi are still inspiring other people to do good, to fight evil. As much as it hurts that their entire culture/religion was genocided out of existence just so one man could have all the power, it helps to know that their legacy is still one of hope. Even tying this into The Last Jedi that message remains. Their legacy is one of hope.
And I think the Jedi would be really happy about that.
Just as I think that the Jedi would have found this speech really touching. Because they were all about how the Force moves within all life, not just those who were sensitive to it. Poe talking about Yoda’s speech to Luke, who must have repeated it time and again, for Poe to have heard about it, using it as a eulogy and inspiration for the Resistance to keep moving forward?
That L’ulo’s body being vaporized was compared to Obi-Wan’s body vanishing in his fight with Darth Vader? That they were all luminous beings inside of this crude matter?
Hell yes, that’s exactly what the Jedi would have wanted their ultimate legacy to be. They were teachers, they were guardians of the peace, they wanted to help everyone they could, to have their words used like this, to have the spirit of their words honored this way, it touches my heart so much.
And it fits with the themes of The Last Jedi so well. “No one is ever really gone.” Obi-Wan is never really gone, his actions still echo forward to this day. Yoda is never really gone, his words still give meaning and comfort to people to this day. Luke is never really gone, his legacy and sacrifice allowed hope to flourish once again.
Their actions help the people they cared about, sometimes even people they never got to meet, their memories stayed in the hearts of those people, L’ulo will be remembered by all of them, the effect he had on the galaxy made it a better place than it was before, he brought good to the galaxy. To have Poe’s speech touch on the Jedi, how they viewed the galaxy and what they brought, to inspire others, for them to continue forward with all the memories of those who came before?
I AM FEELINGS ABOUT STAR WARS AGAIN.
tumblr users being absolutely useless and ridiculous with every update getting more pissed off but not even thinking of leaving their little circus tent and tumblr not giving up and still trying to market this hellhole constantly adding some annoying bullshit to it. perfect example of immovable object vs unstoppable force
some of you wanna recreate gender roles in lgbt relationships so bad
butches are not inherently tops. femmes are not inherently bottoms. bears are not inherently tops and twinks are not inherently bottoms. yall really look at masc/fem relationships and think “yeah lemme apply straight gender roles to them” and see no issue with this
also, butches are not inherently doms and femmes are not inherently subs. In fact, dom/sub roles aren’t a requirement in a relationship at all.
oh god i’m fine i’m just thinking about how rebels ahsoka is super calm and collected and cool as hell and then she sees rex and she just slams right back into little sister mode i can never get over how… sweet? she looks when she sees him again
that is a little sister expression if i’ve ever seen one
