Narcissa took a deep breath, letting a sigh pass her lips as Greer poured her peace offering all over the floor. She took a step back so that she didn’t get any of the drink all over her shoes though she could see a few drops of it on her clothes. Even though Greer didn’t seem to want to cooperate just yet, Cissa missed hearing her voice and was happy that she was able to hear it again after weeks of being ignored.
As the other girl began to walk away from her, unlike at the Gala, she didn’t let her get very far. ❝Hey, come on.❞ Narcissa called out to her, reaching out and putting her hand on Greer’s shoulder to try and stop her. She couldn’t help the way her attempt at a friendly smile had faded into a soft pout and her eyes staring up at Greer like a wounded puppy.
❝You have to talk to me sooner or later…I hate seeing you so upset and I hate that I caused it. It’s been weeks. Will you please just give me a chance here?❞ she asked with the hope that maybe they would get a chance to actually talk. Greer had run off after Narcissa rejected her confession and stopped talking to her ever since. Though she wasn’t sure what she could do to make it better. It wasn’t like she could drop James to be with Greer when she didn’t have those feelings for her but she was hoping there was anything that could make this silent treatment end quicker.
Of course she couldn’t be so lucky that she walked away from Narcissa Black once and she could do it again. It would have only made this entire situation somewhat acceptable and not make her want to just punch– no, actually, there were no back doors, no matter what happened here, Greer was going to walk away from this punching people. Or kicking them. Or throwing some more glass shards at them. Or just doing anything that would result in pain and misery, because rather anyone else than her again.
She already spent way too many tears because of Black, and no matter how sucky she felt, she wasn’t going to shed any more of them.
But it seemed like there was no getting out of this conversation so easily as she wished she could, as the other girl was quick to reach after her and now she was standing in front of her with those sad puppy eyes that she still felt like she couldn’t say no to despite everything that happened and it was hard not to just sigh, let everything go and forgive the Black girl.
Instead of doing that, however, she crossed her arms in front of her chest, raised her eyebrows expectantly and sent Narcissa Black daggers from her eyes. “You want a chance? You want to talk? Really? Alright, talk then,” she spit the words out, anger so easily detectable from her voice, her posture, her expression. “You actually think you could say anything to make things better? Because I don’t, but I am curious now. So speak.”
He rather lost track of how long he spent sobbing into Greer’s shoulder on the balcony, but any amount of time was an embarrassment. Amycus didn’t break down. He’d given up on crying long before he’d arrived at Hogwarts. But– fuck he had forgotten he could even hurt like this.
Biting his lip, he dashed furiously at his red and swollen eyes as he took a step back. Mortified he refused to look Greer in the eyes. Her shoulder was still damp with his tears for fucks sake. “Sorry, shit. I didn’t- fuck, I didn’t mean to— Shit, sorry.”
Greer let Am cry it out as long as he needed. Only a couple of days ago she was in a similar situation and even though she wouldn’t have admitted it in front of Amycus, because she still felt embarrassed that she even cried on Lecto’s shoulders, she kind of knew how the other person must have felt and that letting him cry it out was the best thing she could have possibly done at that point. At least, she hoped it was. If there was any kind of spell that could just fix pain like this, she wished people would tell her so she could use it and pass it onto her friends too.
When Amycus stepped back and started apologizing, she waved it off. “Don’t be an idiot, you don’t need to apologize for anything.” She looked around and when she saw a smaller section of the fence a couple of meters away, she walked over there, pushed herself up on top and pulled out her pack of cigarette. “Want one? I am pretty sure you could use it right around now,” she offered the pack towards her friend with a cigarette already hanging out from between her lips.
Amycus smirked at Greer over the crest of his sister’s shoulder. He could only just barely see her. Normally he hated sleeping in the absolute darkness. Even in his dorm he had a small nightlight that hovered over his own bed so nothing ever got completely dark. Here at least he had Alecto to curl up against. She always helped to keep his nightmares at bay. So yes, in a way her body was his lullaby.
“Aww, but if I can’t drive you insane how am I supposed to ever have any fun?” He teased, ruining the effect by yawning into Alecto’s shoulder. “I value my fun, Greerie.” She had literally offered up her bed when Amycus had broken down on her, and he’d owe her his life for that.
Alecto almost snickered at Greer’s sudent protective self over her pets- she huffed amused though, her head shaking at the other’s words. ‘ Calm your tails, Greer- you think I’d ever let them eat any of your animals? Or them to bite you? Nah. Everything’s under control.’ She spoke solemenly because this was true: she would never let anything or anyone Greer loved get hurt if she could help it.
She then groaned in annoyance as the two kept on talking about her arse, finding it annoying that Greer had agreed with Amycus- it wasn’t weird to her that Amycus complimented her arse, it was more weird that Greer did so. ‘ Now, let’s be honest, who could ever hold himself from complimenting me? I’m gorgeous.’ she turned her head to look at Greer and then over her shoulder at Amycus.
She then closed her eyes and wrapped held an arm in front of her body, not moving an inch. ‘ You had your lullaby, can we go to sleep now?’ she mumbled under her bereath- wanting nothing more than to shut off the awkwardness.
“Just precautions,“ Greer said though she was smiling as she rolled her eyes. It was nice of Alecto to reassure her that she would never let anything happen to either of her animals or even her. It was a side of her that she saw more and more lately, and she couldn’t help but love it.
She rolled her eyes again, this time at Amycus and she reached over Alecto to push the guy a little, but didn’t say anything. Alecto was right, it was late, all three of them were tired as hell, or at least Greer knew she was. Avoiding one particular person on a party that is thrown by that one person and her family is more draining than she ever realized and she wanted nothing more than to sleep and forget the night ever happened.
“Alright, alright, good night,“ she said and then spent the next thirty minutes or so trying to find the most comfortable position she could sleep in. The clothes bothered her greatly, though she doubted either of the twins would have liked the idea of her sleeping naked right next to them. It would have been strange as fuck. So, in the end, she settled on her side with her back against the wall as she slowly dozed off to sleep.
“Of course I will make sure when I’m-when I’m sober, I’ll remember to serenade you and prove you wrong.” she proclaimed almost like it was a challenge. Greer was definitely challenging her though, Gladys was able to get that much from her. At least nowadays she wasn’t as shy so she had no problem performing in front of others.
Gladys knew that Greer would be annoyed with her about the Gilderoy comment but it just slipped out. She couldn’t possibly think of anyone else in that moment who she would want to kiss at midnight, especially after her letters with Glenda. She might have thought about that magical daydream more than she’d like to admit. Her eyes locked with Greer’s when she stood in the way of her view and put her hands on her shoulders. “Me? Better looking than Gilderoy Lockhart? You really think so?” That was probably one of the highest compliments Gladys could have received and she had no idea Greer thought that way. At least the parts about her anyway.
As Greer took a step closer to Gladys and put her hand onto her ass, she was shocked that this was even happening, staring up at the other girl speechless. She was enjoying it quite a bit but how long was she supposed to keep her hand where it was without it seeming inappropriate? “Alright, okay you’re right, this is uh…much better. Is this like…your go to move or something?”
“Interesting choice of words,“ Greer noted as she laughed at the fact that Gladys decided to promise to serenade her later on when she wasn’t so drunk, “but yes, please, prove me wrong. Can’t wait to be proven wrong.” Either way, she was going to have fun for sure.
Greer raised her eyebrows and gave Gladys an unimpressed look. “Have I ever given you a compliment that I didn’t mean?” She was fake nice with so many people, and in the beginning she was fake nice with Gladys too, but as their knitting sessions progressed, she had to admit that she became more honest with the girl. No fake niceness or fake compliments. Plus, this was Gilderoy Lockhart they were talking about. Of course Gladys was better looking than him! Who would ever think otherwise?!
Gladys’ sudden shock was amusing, and Greer had to admit, it was nice to have the girl’s hand on her ass. More than she would have anticipated. She knew she should have stepped back and just let the two of them laugh it all off as an inappropriate joke, but Gladys was pretty. Gorgeous, even, and she came to this party with open eyes, hoping she could find someone to hook up with to get that Black girl out of her head once and for all. Why couldn’t it be with Gladys just because they were on good terms in general? The girl seemed to be enjoying herself with her ass, too, so why deny some fun from the both of them, right?
Her grin slowly turned into a seductive smile and she moved even closer, making sure Gladys’ hands stayed where they were. “You mean where I try to get it into a girl’s head that she is better than some random wanna-be or the part where I put her hand on my ass? Because I never done either of these things specifically, but if you mean the obvious flirting, then yeah, I’ve done that a couple of times.” She leaned in closer, her fingers slowly moving up and down on Gladys’ arm, whispering into the other’s ears, “Why, would it work on you?”
Gladys scoffed, almost offended that Greer even implied that she wasn’t a good singer. “Excuse me…I’m great. I sing…so good.” she slurred, taking a sip from her cup and pointing it at her. “Maybe not so good after drinking…or maybe better. But I was singing before I drank too much so you missed out on a great show.” Maybe it wasn’t her greatest performance but normally she did have a decent voice.
She nodded in agreement which was probably thanks to the alcohol since snogging random people wasn’t something she usually did. She looked over Greer though, who was super into kissing girls and was looking for a girl to kiss. Gladys was a girl who was super into the idea of being kissed. She tried to not let her mind wander towards fake scenarios that could never happen like it always did and tried to stay focused.
When Greer asked who it was that she wouldn’t mind kissing and she let her head loll from side to side as she considered it, humming as she did so. As her head was tilted to the side her eyes found Gilderoy across the room and she couldn’t help the giggle the passed her lips as she checked him out. “Weeeeell I mean you…you said you didn’t wanna talk about him. But god he looks so pretty over there. And his ass looks amaaazing.”
„You know…” Greer said slowly, grinning in amusement at Gladys’ excuses and explanations. How was she so amusing and pushed a lot other bad mood out of the way, she didn’t know „You don’t sound too convincing,”Greer teased the other girl. „Maybe next time I won’t miss the show and I candraw my own conclusion of it.”
Greer followed Gladys’ gaze as the girl spoke, but evenbefore she laid eyes on the person, she knew who the other girl was talkingabout. And surprise, surprise… it was Gilderoy Lockhart! She visibly, painfullyrolled her eyes and let out a long, loud groan. „Are you kidding with me, Gludgeon?”she asked, frustration seeping through every spoken word. „I thought we’ve alreadywent over this.”
Greer stepped in front of Gladys, blocking the view ofGilderoy Lockhart completely and she put both of her hands on either sides ofthe girl’s shoulders. „Listen to me you dummy. You look so much better thanhim, you hear me? You’re like this high,” she said, raising her hands on a facelevel, „and he’s somewhere down the ground, so just forget about him already. Youcan do so much better than him. Plus,” she added, because honestly, her ego wasgreatly bruised that Lockhart’s ass was complimented and hers wasn’t, „if youwant a really good ass, mine is so much better than his. Just saying.” And justto make her point perfectly clear, she stepped closer, took one of Gladys’hands and placed it on her ass. Because demonstration was the best way to makesure Gladys had no doubt about the truth of her words. „See?” she asked with a coysmile on her face.
Narcissa had spotted Greer a few times throughout the night and most of the time she was either drinking, causing trouble with Evan or both. She desperately wanted to talk to her but she wasn’t sure when there would be a good moment to do it. She didn’t want to force or rush things, of course Greer had a right to be upset but Narcissa really wanted her friend back.
At a moment where Greer and Evan were separated, she decided to make her move. Luckily she had a few drinks in her so that made it a little easier to approach. With one drink in hand she used her free hand to tap Greer on the shoulder to get her attention. ❝You looked like you could use another drink…❞ she offered the plastic cup with a smile, hoping the girl would take the peace offering.
There were two thoughts that crossed Greer’s mind when NarcissaBlack approached her. The first was that she really should have went with Evanto get another drink. She should have known better than to give an opening forthe Black girl to come and try to talk to her, though she hoped the otherwouldn’t try it, not after she made it clear during the Black Gala that shedidn’t want anything to do with her. And the second one was that she really wantedto punch someone. Or something. She just wanted to feel the pain of her knucklesthat came with a good, strong punch.
She tilted her head. Maybe throwing the drink into Black’sface would work as well. It wouldn’t be as satisfying as the punch and thepain, but it would still be nice, seeing the other’s hair and face and clothesdripping in whatever sticky alcohol she brought to her. For a second shepictures the entire scene in front of her eyes, but when she reached for thecup with a stern, emotionless expression, she just… couldn’t do it. She wasmad, but somehow not mad enough to do it. She still cared enough not to want toembarrass the other girl, and she hated herself for it, but what can you do, right?
Instead, she raised the cup almost above Black, very nearher and poured the alcohol out onto the floor. A small little spill might havehit the Slytherin, but it couldn’t have been more than a couple of drops. ”Idon’t want anything from you,” she said and then turned around to try to leave, hoping Cis—Black couldn’t tell that her heart was beating in her throat likecrazy.
The two of their replies came almost in unison. James understood, of course, it made sense to him because he could feel it too. He didn’t need some big explanation to get where she was trying to go with this. But Greer was still confused and telling her she had so many more options for people she could be with. She shook her head in response, trying her best to find the words to explain herself. ❝I just…I know it all sounds crazy but it’s something you need to trust me on. And like he said it’s something I didn’t want getting out, so if we could keep this between us?❞
Greer began to get closer and her hand was no longer holding hers but rather cupping her cheek now. Narcissa didn’t have much time to process where she was going with this before Greer’s lips found hers.
Narcissa had felt herself kissing back out of pure instinct until it started to click in her brain what was happening. Greer had just kissed her. Greer Nott. Someone she considered to be a good friend was kissing her and she had no idea where this came from or why. With James’ hand still in hers, she suddenly squeezed tighter on his fingers as Greer pulled away from her, worried about what he was thinking about this. To say she was shocked would be an understatement. The Hufflepuff had planted a kiss on her lips and was now holding her close and confessing that Narcissa deserved better, that she could love her better than James could.
❝Greer, I-where is this coming from? I had no idea…❞ she managed to spit out. Narcissa never picked up on any of these feelings Greer seemed to have for her and if this were anyone else, Narcissa probably would have let them down harshly. An ‘I like him, not you’ type of response, but Narcissa didn’t want to be harsh with Greer. She wanted her to understand what was going on and stay her friend after all this.
❝I know that you don’t like him, you’ve made that pretty clear, but I just want you to understand that…I’m happy.❞ she told her softly, bringing her hands to gently remove Greer’s hands from cupping her face. ❝I’ve never been with someone and felt this way before and it’s nice. We do really care about each other and it isn’t something I can change.❞ Taking a step back, Narcissa went and held James’ hand once more, resting her head on his arm, hoping Greer could see what she was getting at. ❝I’m really flattered but I’m sorry Greer, I really want to be your friend. I like being with James and I’m not looking for any other options.❞
The moment Greer’s lips touched Narcissa’s, James was stunned, held in place by shock and brought back to reality by the squeezing of his hand by Narcissa’s fingers. Everything made sense all at once, in a dizzying and quite alarming way. Everything she had said to him or about him vanished from his mind because he knew that whether she liked him or not wasn’t the issue. Her words may have been personal, but they were born out of jealousy for what she obviously now knew he had with Narcissa. She wanted her friend the same way that James did, perhaps she even loved Narcissa romantically the way James was still slightly afraid to admit that he did. He gently tugged on Narcissa’s hand, in a fleeting attempt to pull her away from Greer but she wouldn’t manhandle her.
Instead, he would settle with glaring at Greer for having touched the lips of the girl he was with and hope that the clenched fist free of Narcissa’s touch would stay balled at his side. He wanted to laugh at her, or taunt her in some way, the old James rising to the surface telling him to do as she had done, now he had the ammunition but he wouldn’t do it. He forced himself to keep quiet. It was Narcissa’s choice what she wanted to do. Not his. “You don’t know me or how I feel for Narcissa, your words are simply those of a jealous girl in love with her friend and I’m sorry. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone but like she said, she is happy with me and she makes me happier than I ever thought I could be” his words may have sounded as though they had a bite too them, but his tone was even as he spoke, his fist unclenching itself.
Narcissa had said she wasn’t looking for any other option and that was all he had needed to hear. The fact that he was the only one she wanted to be with made his heart soar but when he looked at Greer’s face, he understood the pain and anger. How many times had he felt it for Lily? Rejection hurt, and for someone he hated? Worse. He had moved on however, he had grown up and Narcissa had waltzed into his heart and refused to leave it, and he wouldn’t have changed that for the world. When she rested her head against his arm he wrapped his arm around her. “Do you want me to leave so you can speak with your friend alone, Narcissa?” he asked, looking only at her. He trusted her, he knew that Greer would not be able to take her away from him. He turned to Greer and spoke, calmly, “if you’re going to tell reveal our secret then at least let her know so she can prepare herself”.
This wasn’t happening, this couldn’t be happening, this was not how this was supposed to go. Greer kept repeating this in her head but it didn’t help, because Cissa was still talking and with every word she said, Greer’s chances of ever actually being with her got further and further from reality and from happening and she just couldn’t believe this was happening. It felt like Cissa just ripped out her heart, threw it onto the floor and with every word, stepped on it with heels to make sure it was broken.
If she would have looked at the girl’s words objectively, she could have been able to tell that she was letting her down as nicely as it was possible in a situation like this, but in that moment there was no objectivity in anything Greer was doing or feeling, and she could only see the rejection and not how the other one did it. Rejection just hurt no matter the way it was done.
And that Potter made things even worse by… well, by basically being there, being supportive of Cissa, touching Cissa, standing up for Cissa and just existing and breathing the same air as the two of them did. And then he opened his mouth and she really just wanted to punch him again, slap him, kick him in the groin, do all of it together and even more, but she was frozen in plane, only staring at Cissa as the girl rested her head against his arm and James wrapping his hand around her and the pain was just too much and she just didn’t know how to take this, how to handle this, what to even say or do, she just hoped she could get through this without crying because she felt like she was going to cry if she didn’t get out of there soon enough.
She took a step backward when James suggested that they would need some time to talk this through, the spell that got her frozen was gone and she let out a scoff. She forced all the pain away as much as she could and she turned her features expressionless. “We’ve got nothing to talk about. Everything is completely clear,” she said and then she turned around and walked off. James was probably right, but she wasn’t in her right mind and there was no fucking way she was going to humiliate herself even more by talking through the rejection, analyzing every little tidbit. She knew she wouldn’t be able to get through it anyway.
And that little bit about Narcissa having to worry about her telling anyone? She might just do that, she wasn’t sure, but she sure as hell not going to say anything about it to Narcissa. She could spend at least a couple of hours worrying about this. That much she deserved for all of this.
Amycus grumbled as the bed shifted and grew underneath him. They should’ve just fucking thought of that in the first place honestly. All the booze (and in his case, emotions) had obviously gone straight to his head. He buried his face in Alecto’s shoulder until the bed settled and Greer finally joined them.
He’d hardly paid attention to the two girls’ bantering as his mind whirred away trying to concoct some sort of plan to get Al confessing everything. Likely she’d cave if he asked but that was too easy and he desperately needed distraction. Thinking about ways to tease his sister beat the hell out of thinking of the vacant guarded look on his best friend’s face. Rodolphus hadn’t even let Am touch him. No. No, think of anything but that. Greer had already seen him cry once today.
“Y’know Greer, the only thing nicer than her legs is her ass.” He mumbled as he braced himself for an elbow to the cut and possibly a kick to the groin from his twin.
‘ One and Two would appreciate it- the compliment. Even if they’d eat Chips if he’d get really close to them, so I say watch out for that.’ Alecto didn’t bother to name her snakes more than this due different reasons: she thought that they looked like numbers when she first saw them so it was enough for her. ‘ They even tried to eat my pillow once, it’s fun.’
She wasn’t surprised when Greer came up with yet another ingenious idea and it made Alecto remember just how much she didn’t think about magic through the day and for her actions:for someone born with magic she truly had barely initiative. When Greer first commented about her legs, she found it amusing and just rolled her eyes. But, then her brother commented.
And Alecto stiffened into his arms at his words: he bloody knew it. Of course he did, it wasn’t like she could ever hide something from him- the only thing was that it alarmed her, him knowing, almost like it made the whole situation real. And it scared the hell out of her. ‘ Is my body the good night lullaby now?’ She mumbled, sounding amused as she sligthly shifted closer towards Amy though not to touch Greer as she made herself comfortable.
”Oh hell no, they’re not eating Chips!” Greer replied immediately. She called her hamster a dick, she sulked about the hamster not loving her, she might have put him at the bottom of the list when it came to her loving her pets, but she did love Chips and just like with every other pet of hers, she would kill for that idiot hamster. „I still think they’re cute, but they’re not coming anywhere near him. Or any of my babies, for that matter.”
Greer’s eyebrows rose in the dark, even though neither of the twins could possibly see that. She turned to her side and propped herself up onto her forearm and look where she kind of saw two silhouettes lying in the bed next two her (her eyes still needed time to get used to the dark so she barely saw anything.
”Aww, come on, Lecto, don’t tell me you don’t like the compliment,” she nudged the girl with the hand that she didn’t hold herself up with. „And Am, you’re right, she does have an amazing ass, but also please for my sanity, never say anything like this about her ever again. Or at least not in front of me. It would be like me saying that Theo has nice abs or Cass has sparkling eyes and that is just ewww…” She made a face and visibly shuddered (or as much visibility as it was possible in the dark). „Just wrong. So please, don’t kill me with them.”
Gladys jumped as she watched Greer throwing her glass onto the floor, watching it smash and shatter apart into pieces. She whipped her head around to see if there were any onlookers watching the destruction take place. She didn’t want to laugh because this was her friends stuff that she was breaking but with the help of the alcohol Gladys couldn’t deny how amusing it was to watch.
“Fiiiine we can talk about the party. Did you hear me and Reggie singing karaoke? That was great!” she giggled as she thought back to it and how much she enjoyed herself up there with Reginald.
“As a matter of fact no, I have not snogged anyone yet. I mean the nights still young though who knows what will happen.” she shrugged her shoulders and took a long sip of her drink, leaning her head back as she got closer to the bottom of the cup. “How about you? Scoping out any hotties to put the moves on?”
Greer thought back if she actually paid attention to those people who were attempting to karaoke. She couldn’t really remember anyone who was even mildly acceptable, and she definitely couldn’t remember Gladys being up there and singing, but she was curious. She never heard Gladys sing before, but whether she was really good or really bad, Greer was sure it would have been a good show. ”Naah, I missed that. I didn’t know you could sing. Are you actually good or you just think you’re good and the only reason people enjoyed the show was because it was so bad?”
”That’s a shame, snogging is always a fun way to kill a party,” Greer said. She shook her head and the thought that she needed to have a drink crossed her mind. ”Not yet, unfortunately, but like you said, the night is young.” Both of them were really attractive, beautiful girls, it was a true wonder how neither of them found anyone cute to make out or hook up with, and then Greer thought of something and she looked Gladys up and down and… but no. That would be crazy.
She shook her head and instead threw one arm over the other girl’s shoulder and slowly turned Gladys around. „I mean, this only means we’re going to have to wingwoman each other. See anyone to your liking? Anyone you wouldn’t mind smooching?”
Amycus let himself rock with the force of her hit, wincing even as he accepted the pain. He deserved this, he deserved every fucking second someone hit him for Rodolphus because god fucking knows his best friend wouldn’t do it even if Amycus had ruined everything and what had happened to the stability he’d gained back fighting Evan? That had only been an hour ago, two tops, and everything had resumed falling out from underneath him.
Then Greer was hugging him. The second hug he’d gotten today, both terribly unexpected. First Damocles and now Greer and Amycus– Amycus couldn’t fucking do this any more. He clung to his friend, buried his face in the crook of her neck, and began to sob.
Greer wondered for a second if Alecto had felt the same awkwardness when she was comforting her not so long ago in that dark alley, but she herself sure as hell felt extremely awkward in that moment. She was not a hugger, the furthest she usually went with comforting was patting somebody on the head and telling them that it was going to be alright. But then again, he probably didn’t notice anything from her awkwardness, he was more occupied with his pain.
She tried to think of something she could say that would make things better, but there wasn’t anything to say. He fucked up and now he had to deal with the consequences and that included a big amount of pain and suffering too, which he was going to have to push through as much as he could, so instead of opening her mouth and saying something dumb and unhelpful, she just rubbed his back and hoped it helped at least a bit.

Amycus looked up from muttering sweet nothings into Pepper’s ear to catch the way Alecto stared at Greer like the other girl had hung the moon. Interesting. Unexpected, but unwelcome. Alecto could certainly do a lot worse. And Greer couldn’t possibly do any better. No one could. It’d get Greer over Cissa, at least, and on to someone that could actually like her back.
The wheels of his mind began churning, eager for any sort of distraction from Rodolphus or his father. No wonder Al had called dibs on the middle. Oh, he was going to tease her endlessly the minute they got back home. He swallowed down a smirk and gave each of the dogs a final kiss on the head.
“So glad I can claim the title of being the only man in your bed,” he teased Greer as he moved to flop down on the other side of Alecto and wrap his arms around her waist. “Suppose it even makes me forgive you for not letting me sleep with the puppies.”
Alecto froze when Greer turned around and locked her eyes with her- it wasn’t better when the other threw her a smile and it made her once again curse herself. Why was she like this? She huffed under her breath as she nodded absently and looked absently at the bunny not far away from her. She liked seeing it hopping around, wiggling it tail in happiness almost like it was a dog as well. It almost made the numbess in Alecto fade away as she watched the puffiness rolling around the room.
‘ Alright, then no new hamsters.’ she shrugged her shoulders. ‘ I’ll borrow you one of my snakes to make Chips feel a little scared, heard that anxiety makes animals develop as well. ‘ Because everybody already knew dark times made a human develop, made them more powerful or more shattered. Mostly the latter. She let her head drop onto one of the pillows and bit the inside her of cheek as she did so. It was harder than she thought.
Alecto relaxed when Amycus wrapped his arm around her waist and she leaned against him, letting her eyes pervert from a spot on the cover to look up at Greer who was probably going to join. Fuck, it was a terrible idea to call the middle.
“I guess that is a method I would be willing to try, thanks,“ Greer nodded at Alecto’s offer with a small chuckle. To some people’s surprise, she didn’t have even one deadly animal among her pets, and all of her other pets were delightful and cute and kind and so Chips never had to deal with anyone frightening him (unless you count her family, who didn’t really appreciate any of her pets), so a snake might help a bit, especially if Greer came in just at the right time to save the dick hamster. “Plus, your snakes are cool.“
She was sitting at the end of the bed as she watched both Amycus and Alecto climb into her bed and once again she wondered how were they even going to sleep in the same bed just the three of them and then she realized that there was such an easy solution to it and felt dumb that she didn’t think about it before. She quickly jumped up from the bed and grabbed her wand from the nightstand where she usually kept it and pointed the thing at the bed. She muttered a charm and the bed widened beneath the twins. “That’s better.” It wasn’t the biggest bed still, but at least they wouldn’t have to spend the entire night elbowing each other.
“Alright, I am coming in,“ she said before quickly turning the light off and going back to the bed. She stumbled onto the bed and fell onto both of their legs. She giggled and tapped what she assumed would be Alecto’s legs with a “Nice legs comment,“ and then pushed herself into her place between Alecto and the wall and shifted around until she got comfortable.
It had been a while since the other started crying and Alecto hold onto her; it was like she could actually feel the other’s pain: something it only happened when she saw Amycus cry, even if in most of the causes Amycus was the one to fuck up, compared to Greer’s situation that only happened without her doing something for it. Alecto felt shattered and she didn’t do anything. So why the hell she felt shattered holding the other into her arms and feeling her cry into her arms?
She let out a breath she didn’t knew she was holding when the other stepped away, shaking her head at the other. ‘ You have nothing to apologize about.’ the older girl quickly pointed out and turned her head, looking at the girl who was still there, shaking from the previous hexes the two had given her; she had even forgot about her. Usuallly, Alecto would love to fuck someone’s lif,e but right now? She felt nothing. There was no pleasure.
The other kicked the girl and she had to bit her cheek instead of commenting, she nodded ligthly. ‘ If you think it’s for any use, I’ll let you finish her.’ she gestured at the blonde, even if she didn’t even touch her more than just once; Greer seemed like she needed it. Within Alecto’s eyes it couldn’t be seen pity- it was understanding; it wasn’t something unclear into the way her eyes gleamed. ‘ I think you’ve earned it.’
However she didn’t say she’d touch her, she leaned and took the necklace off the other brutally, looking at it with a slight turn of her head. ‘Ah, this is pretty at least.’
Alecto did say she had nothing to apologize for, though Greer didn’t exactly agree with that, but still, she was grateful that her friend said that and that she was still here and supporting her. She could have easily just walked away and left here there to broke down all to herself. It probably would have gone so much worse that way and she would still be on the floor, sobbing her eyes out, and that wouldn’t be pretty. At least thanks to Lecto, she could get herself together now.
She also knew that the Slytherin girl let her have the finishing because she wanted her to feel better and because Lecto felt like she needed it more and probably felt sorry for her too after seeing the way she broke down, but she didn’t disagree. She actually needed it. “Thanks,” she said looking into Alecto’s eyes and holding the other girl’s gaze to make sure that the other girl knew that this wasn’t just a simple thanks. It was for everything she’s done for her so far that day, that she’s been there for her. Greer only hoped it actually came through and Alecto understood what she was trying to say.
She stepped closer and touched the necklace for a second and raised her eyebrow at it before she said, “it’s not even close to how pretty you are, Lecto. Don’t lower your standards for a fucking mudblood.” She looked up at her friend and smiled at her. “You deserve so much better jewelry than some worthless, ugly mudblood necklace.”
And then she stepped away and turned her focus on the blondie. She really was pretty and it was a shame she had to be a fucking mudblood. But she was, there no turning it around or forgetting it, and Greer raised her wand at the girl and without any hesitation or guilt or second thought, she sent an Avada Kedavra at the girl. She should feel honored by how she could go out and die. At least her death had some kind of meaning, even if the rest of her life didn’t.
“At least this felt good,“ she said as she turned back to Lecto.
Amycus wanted to say that they were still best friends, that Rodolphus would always be his best friend, but… they probably weren’t any more, were they? Amycus had probably gone and fucking wrecked that as well. He hunched in on himself, absolutely fucking miserable. Fuck he really wanted to cry. But he’d made it this far without a single tear. Maybe he could avoid that embarrassment all together?
“Of course he deserved a conversation, he deserved to not get dumped at all, he deserved—” better. Amycus could be better, he could, if he could just, if he could just see another way but this out of the hole he’d dug himself. “I’d never be able to get the words out. I’d just— I’d look at him and the thought of watching him hurt, of hurting him, drove me fucking crazy, and I couldn’t– I can’t— just stand there any watch him fall apart without wanting to make it better. But I can’t make it better, because I don’t know what to do.”
Am was miserable, Greer could easily tell and as angry as she was at him, she still couldn’t stay like that and keep yelling at him because he probably caused a lot more pain to himself than anything she could say or do right now. It would be like kicking a puppy while he’s down. She scratched her forehead looking down, not really knowing what to do, how to handle this because she really wasn’t good at comforting anyone, especially not when she thought the other person made a huge mistake on so many levels it was hard to count, but Am didn’t get any further with that being thrown into his face.
So instead of saying anything else, she stepped closer to Am and did two things. First, she hit him really really hard in the shoulders. She used all her strength to make sure he actually felt it. (She would have punched him but his face was fucked up enough as it was, and Lecto would probably kill her if she gave her brother another black spot on his face.) And then she went and wrapped her hands around him and hugged him. It was kind of sheepish, kind of awkward, kind of totally out of character for Greer, because she was usually not a hugger, but she hoped it would at least somewhat help and Am would get what she was trying to do - give him support in a weird, Greer kind of way.
Evan’s mood had turned for the worse. After this last fight
with Alice, unhinged was putting it mildly. He had written Greer to meet him at
this new years party with every intention of causing mayhem. Settling into a
chair in the corner, he watched the others closely with sparked vindication.
The sneer of hatred painted across his lips wanting to just massacre a large
hunk of the party in front of him. Avada all these traitors and mudbloods. He
could sit here in their blood and he would be forever happy.
Turning his eyes towards Greer he shakes his head. “Look at
them.” He hisses the drink in his hand as he knocks it back, letting the
alcohol burn down his throat. She was here and that made him furious. She who
let one of his friends torture her. In the bouts of his mind he wants to
torture her now. But he still feels himself unable to do it. After the drink is
done for he smashes the drink on the table. “This is all fucking bullshit.”
The entire break was one big rollercoaster for Greer, with one minute wanting nothing more than to cry and smash things and with the other wanting to just get trashed for an entire week. She did the first one in a way where she cried for fuck knows how long on Alecto’s shoulders, and maybe not for an entire week, but the getting trashed part was finally here too.
As Evan’s unluck had it, he was in a pretty shitty mood as well thanks to that fucking Fortescue (she never really liked that stuck up bitch, but she wasn’t going to kick her best friend while he was down) and so now they both planned to just drink as much as they could and hopefully punch a couple of people at least. (Greer really hoped to do more but she couldn’t exactly just slit somebody’s throat right in the middle of the party.) She was sitting cross-legged on the table and she watched with amusement as the glass broke next to her.
“They’re all bitches and don’t deserve either of us,” Greer gritted her teeth. She drank the remaining of her own fire whiskey and started playing with one of the broken shards from Evan’s glass. She didn’t look up because she knew that Black would be there and she would see her and that would only piss her off and make her feel worse about herself. She played with one of the shards before she threw it in the crowd and watched as the glass pierced somebody’s arm and blood spilled immediately. “At least that made me feel a tiny bit better.”
Gladys would consider herself more of a social drinker if anything. She enjoyed the taste of certain drinks but unless she was at a party such as this one, she didn’t much care for any of it. It was mostly just to let loose and have fun which is what a party was all about anyway.
Greer’s reaction to seeing her was a good sign that she wasn’t upset so Gladys was relieved about that. “Hey, hey look. I did a lot of yelling over those few days okay? It doesn’t mean you won it just means…I didn’t wanna keep screaming.” she replied, pointing her finger at the other girl because she knew that even if it was a competition, she did not lose. “But I’m glad you’re not mad I got a little worried about it. I just am…very passionate about Gilderoy…speaking of, do you think he’s here?” she asked turning her head around excitedly as she tried to see if she could spot him anywhere.
“Sorry, sorry I’m just going to forget about him right now. Tell me about how your break has been! I missed getting to hang out with you.”
Greer never would actually say it out loud, but Gladys was one of those people outside of her usual circle whom she actually somewhat tolerated. Maybe even liked. She was definitely the only one who was fun in the Knitting Club and she enjoyed their usual weekly time together, and somehow, she did not irritate her currently like most people at this party did. Which was definitely a surprise, because she wanted to just punch at least half the people here right now. She didn’t have a specific reason for it, but she never needed one either.
But she was not going to fucking talk about Gilderoy Lockhart with Gladys, nor was she going to discuss her break so far. That was just so fucking not happening. Instead, she drank up everything that was in the glass she held in her hand currently and thrashed it on the floor one big swoop before she grinned up at her. “We are not talking about Gilderoy fucking Lockhart and we’re definitely not talking about how my brak has been because that is way too depressing. Let’s talk about the party. Anything interesting happening so far? Have you snogged anyone yet?” she asked with a teasing eyebrow wiggle.
Gladys had been treating herself to a few drinks here and there ever since her arrival at the Cattermole house for the party. The place was bustling and it felt like all of Hogwarts was here and it was comforting in a way. After being in a big empty castle it was nice to be so close to everyone. Literally.
“Greer! You’re here!” she called out, when she spotted the girl, quickly making her way over, pushing through the crowd as best as she could. “I just-I just wanted to say sorry for all those howlers.” her words slurred slightly as she rested her hand on Greers shoulder both for comfort as well as balance. “I shouldn’t have yelled at you, you’re not mad at me right?”
Greer didn’t like alcohol 99% of the time, but ever since the Nar-Black incident, it’s been that 1%, and since Evan really wasn’t in the best mood either thanks to that idiot Fortescue, they were both getting trashed that night. Forget about all the shit and get so drunk that you forget that you even hate the taste of alcohol. Sounded like a nice plan, if you asked Greer.
She had already drunk several glasses of fire whiskey when Gladys found her and Greer watched the girl push her way through the crowd and she couldn’t not look her up and down. She checked every single girl out tonight, hoping she could at least get something going with one. Not that she thought anything would happen with Gladys, but looking wasn’t outlawed or anything. “Gladys, hey!” she scream-greeted the girl with a wide grin and then just laughed. “Don’t be ridiculous, girl, the yelling was entertaining as hell. I never knew you could screech in that high voice. Plus, the fact that I won the screaming match is a nice touch as well,” she added wink a wink.
Gladys was upset that she had used up so many howlers all in the name of Gilderoy Lockhart. First she was doing her best to defend his honour after Greer made him feel inadequate and then she had to (yes, had to) scream about how much she adored the boy with Glenda. She might have hurt her voice and used up an obscene amount of howlers but it was worth it.
I regret to inform you that I no longer have any howlers at my disposal but please do imagine me shouting this. YES. I am talking about Gilderoy Lockhart. The one in my house and year who has glorious blonde curls and a charming smile. There is no other Gilderoy. He just has the best of intentions I’m sure he didn’t mean to bother you or upset you in any way and you really should give him a chance he isn’t as horrible as you make him out to be.
Greer chuckled when she saw that this time it was a letter from Gladys and not a howler and had decided that she wasn’t going to gloat about that she won the screaming match. Only maybe a little. Even if she won because apparently Gladys had no voice anymore. She wondered if the girl only sent howlers at her or if others got some screaming from Gladys as well.
I am sorry to hear that you don’t have a voice, hope it’s not permanent. How would we gossip and chat during our weekly knittings together? Anyway, I still can’t believe we are talking about the same person. Though the bigger thing that is in my mind right now that I can’t get over is how did I know you have such delusional obsession with him? How did I miss this all this time? How did you not jump into a ramble about him yet? Are you a proper fangirl? Do you have a fanclub or are you alone just quietly admiring him from afar?
Amycus winced. He knew this would happen. Of course he’d known this would happen, he could remember how over the fucking moon when he and Rodolphus had finally gotten their shit together (almost as giddy as he’d been honestly) and now that he’d fucking ruined everything… well he couldn’t blame her for yelling and screaming.
“Yeah, well, I’ve been miserable ever since, so clearly I fucking was. It’s just… I’m, engaged,” he said, his voice breaking halfway through. “And Avianna’s… she’s excited, y’know, and— and they’re friends and– I dunno, Gre.”
“Yeah, I mean, no wonder you’ve been feeling fucking ridiculous, I am not surprised why you’re so… like this now that I know,” she grunted, gesturing towards all of Amycus at the last bit. ”But let’s go back to the part where you did it over a fucking letter, like fucking hell, Am! What were you thinking? I thought you were… I don’t care what you justify your decision with for doing that, that is probably just… let’s not get into that. But a fucking letter?! Hell, weren’t you like best friends even before you fell for him? Wouldn’t he had at least deserved a conversation about this all?” she asked, forcing herself to keep her voice down.
She never really had a real relationship before, only hookups and funs, which she did sometimes end in not such nice ways like simply ignoring the other person, but those were just hookups, they didn’t mean anything, and as much as she knew (and unless she was blind, she was right about it too), Rodolphus meant the world to Am, so she really didn’t understand how Am thought a fucking letter break up would be acceptable.
“I’d love you both more if you let me take the middle. Then I could show our hostess everything she’s missing out on, cuddle-wise.” Amycus wheedled, even though he knew damn well it was a lost cause. Alecto had called it and Amycus could never really find it in himself to deny his sister anything. He was a pushover and they both fucking knew it. If Alecto wanted to cuddle both him and Greer than that’s how she’s spend the night.
He yawned and buried his face in Pepper’s fur while he listened to Greer and Alecto banter about the hamster. The sound of their voices soothed him after the fucking fiasco of the gala, and if he focused on them he didn’t have to remember the sight of Rodolphus’s carefully blank face and the sound of bland, controlled voice. Just focus on the girls. They mattered now.
“Are you sure I can’t just sleep with the dogs?” He asked, growing more attached to Pepper’s warm comforting presence by the second. “You can kick me in my sleep and I won’t even care.”
Alecto felt a little stupid for choosing the middle because even if Greer was into girls and the only girls her brother will ever consider will be her and his fiancee- she felt like they shouldn’t sleep one besides the other. Even if she knew perfectly well that sleeping so tight besides Greer will be a nigthmare, it was a better option that the other. ‘ Keep dreaming, bro’, didn’t you just say you loved us?’ she narrowed an amused eyebrow towards him as if challening to deny it.
She couldn’t help but smile at Greer’s comment and nod. ‘ Yeah, you’re pretty deligthful indeed.’ she looked at Chips and shook her head. ‘ It’s its problem that it doesn’t like you, maybe get another hamster, make it jealous and maybe it will love you? Or hate you even more, it’s worth a try.’
Before Amycus spoke about the bed, Greer was whispering into the dog’s ear and she coudn’t help but stare, it was amazing how the other could be so fierce and a power and in the end of the day whisper to her animals- she seemed to be doing better. She blinked several times to get out of the trence and look at her brother, again with a deadly glance.
‘ I’m supposed to be the girl between the two of us, not you, remember? Greer said no dogs, respect her opinion.’
Greer let out a laugh. “Don’t say something like that. I am pretty sure I turn up home with another hamster, and Chip will strangle me in my sleep.” Plus, she really unsure about hamsters after Chips. Technically he was just one hamster, but then again, who knew. Maybe hamsters just generally hated her. She really didn’t want more pets who hated her. “I mean, either Chips or Theo. I am pretty sure he can’t stand my babies.” That was a little bit of an understatement.
Greer looked up and caught Alecto looking at her and she sent her friend a soft, genuine smile - something she only reserved for very few people. Alecto must be looking for all the signs of when Greer’s next break down was going to happen, or at least how she was doing, but thankfully it wasn’t going to happen. She was still angry and pissed and she still hurt, but she was pretty sure she cried out all the tears from her eyes, and that actually helped. A lot. Alecto, in general, helped a lot. More than the girl probably realized.
It was just a couple of moments, and then she rolled her eyes and poked Am real hard in the side. “It’s real cute how much you love my dogs, but get over it and get in bed, Am, you’re not sleeping with them.” She let out a chuckle and shook her head. “I really never thought I’d ever say this to a man in my life, feel honored. And then get in here because I am tired as hell.”
Last night was a lot of fun from what I remember but you were upset, we were both drunk and I think we both know things went a little too far. I don’t even know what to do in these scenarios but I hope we’re cool.
Cas let me in and I assume you didn’t want to see me so here’s a note to tell you I’m still really sorry about what happened. The last thing I wanted to do was upset you and I really hope that we can talk and go back to being friends again.
The howler began with a gasp, you could practically hear her clutching her chest in shock at Greer’s words.
“I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT I AM HEARING. DOESN’T LOOK GOOD? THE BOY IS GORGEOUS GREER YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIKE HIM BUT YOU HAVE TO ADMIT HE’S GOT A GREAT FACE. AND HIS CURLS ARE CUTE. I TALKED TO HIM ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS AND I CAN TELL YOU HE’S LOVELY AND CHARMING AND AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE TO BE AROUND AND IM SORRY THAT YOU CAN’T SEE IT.”
Greer rolled her eyes at the howler like she did at each previous one, and wondered what the others in the house must think of this conversation. They must hear all of it, everything was incredibly loud, Gladys was practically shrieking and Greer didn’t hold anything back either, but this was war. She was definitely not going to be the one backing down from the screaming.
“ARE YOU SURE WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME PERSON? BECAUSE I AM GETTING NOT SO SURE ABOUT THAT. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT GILDEROY LOCKHART? THE ONE IN RAVENCLAW WHO IS JUST ANNOYING WHENEVER HE OPENS HIS MOUTH? YOU SURE YOU’RE NOT THINKING OF SOMEBODY ELSE?“
Alecto wasn’t one to comfort. Alecto only knew how to comfort Amycus and that consisted in making sure she’d do anything for him to be okay and healthy and snugguling him so close to her that their breath interwined. She couldn’t promise Greer that everything was okay and that’d she do something about it because there was nothing she could do to change that girl’s mind without using the Imperius curse on her or something.
She couldn’t do that, obviously.
So, she ended up just staying with her arms tigthened around the other. ‘ I know that falling for a friend sucks-’ she mumbled, unsure why she was still babbling when she should probably just keep her mouth shut. ‘-but, it gets better. You’ll get over her.’ Greer didn’t say that girl was a friend or not, but she was pretty sure she was, knowing her she was friends with everyone she liked, either way or another.
Then Alecto remained silent because she had came to the conclusion that being speachless might have been better than speaking and making things worse than they already were- she didn’t know, but then the other started to cry and she felt silent, she didn’t knew what to do more, just moving her hand soothly up and down her back. This didn’t help much, she knew, but it was the best she could do, so she stood there. Hands tigthened around the other as she hold her closer, letting her cry on her t-shirt and not caring about it getting wet. What mattered was that Greer to get better; the other girl being long forgotten. She bit the inside of her cheek and waited. Because this was the only thing she could do now.
Greer wasn’t exactly sure how long she was crying holding onto Alecto, burying her face in her friend’s clothes, but for the longest time she felt like she just couldn’t stop crying and that if Alecto wasn’t there, she would have broken down worse, that she didn’t even realise it until now how much she actually needed the other girl to be there.
And then suddenly a moment came when she was more calmed her tears didn’t come as a sob but they were only slowly streaking down her face, when it hit her that they were standing in the middle of a dark alley, the girl was still groaning and crying from the torture and she was holding onto Alecto like she was holding onto dear life itself and this was not what she had in mind when she wrote to Alecto and asked if she wanted to join her and she was sure that this was definitely not what Alecto had in mind when she agreed to come along. The Slytherin girl probably just wanted to have some little fun and Greer went ahead and ruined it all and she really needed to stop.
She just needed to stop.
So Greer counted until five in her head and slowly untangled herself from Alecto and took a step back, wiping her face. She must have had the biggest puffy eyes ever, not that she actually cared about how she looked, but she had to make sure she wasn’t going to show up like this back home. She would be mortified if anyone in her family saw her in this state, though surprisingly, she didn’t mind Lecto seeing her like this.
“Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to break down on you like this,“ she muttered, looking down to the ground, up to the sky, to the wall, to the girl, everywhere but Alecto, because even though she didn’t mind the girl seeing her like this, she also didn’t want to see the pity in her eyes. She would die if she actually saw that. So instead, when she heard the girl whine again, she shook her head, let out a big sigh and moved over to the girl, forcing her brain to focus on the mudblood and not on why she was crying for fuck knows how long. She kicked the girl in the stomach, and then in the boobs for good measures before she turned back to Alecto, only looking at her for the first time now.
“I broke up with Rodolphus. Over letter at the start of break.” Amycus said, hunching in on himself and staring at the railing. If he looked at Greer, if he saw anything like pity or compassion on her face, he’d break down completely and do the one thing he’d not let himself do since sending the letter: cry. Once he started doing that Am didn’t know if he could stop.
“It was a shitty ass thing to do, and I know it was, and now he’s here and he’s gorgeous and he’s— he’s here.” That last part was so longing and pitiful he wanted to throw himself off the damn balcony.
“And the bruise is from Evan, because he’s the only one who would punch me like I deserve, and he wanted to fight so we did and it almost helped except I saw Rodolphus and I talked to him and it was— it was—” his voice wobbled dangerously and he forced himself to clear his throat.
“I’m sorry, what?“ Greer asked back, blinking hard because she must have heard wrong. Am must have said something wrong or she must have heard something wrong because there was no way that what she heard, that he broke up with Rodolphus, was true.
But then he kept talking and his voice broke and he looked so miserable and horrible and sad and ready to just break down and cry and never stop crying, and it had to be true because Greer couldn’t imagine anything else breaking Am like this. (Except if something happened with Lecto, but they were just talking about her and he didn’t seem like anything was wrong there aside from the shitshow at home, so she was fairly certain that wasn’t it, that Lecto was perfectly safe and sound.)
“First of all, if you wanna become a punching bag, you can always come, see me too, I am happy to help, especially now since I’ve been feeling like beating up everyone in the past couple of days,“ Greer said once she was out of the shock. It’s not that she would wanna use Am as a punching bag, but if he asked, she wouldn’t say no. “And secondly, what the fuck man?! What the fuck? Why would you do that? And over a letter? A fucking letter? Are you out of your mind?“ The what the fucks came out screaming, after that she forced her voice down and only hiss-yelled at him, but it was hard to keep it down, hard to not yell.
Amycus shifted as they got outside, automatically scanning the balcony for Rodolphus. It was just them, no one really wandered around to this part of the manor. He chewed on his lip for a moment, trying to decide if he wanted to keep beating around the bush. Probably wouldn’t help him in the long run.
“Greer, I really fucked up this time. I really… it’s… I really fucked up.”
Greer frowned and crossed her arms in front of her chest as she looked Am up and down. He was so hesitant and his first reaction going outside was scanning the balcony - did he look for somebody or did he hope to avoid somebody? From the fact that he was about to tell her something horrible, a really big mistake, so it was probably the second, and she was getting concerned.
“What happened, Am? What did you do? You’re kind of scaring me here.“
Evan already gave her some bad news tonight, she didn’t want to hear something equally as bad, even though she was pretty sure she was about to.
