Tada! Dye-painted wool felt cape, part of my emperor moth comission.
Reposting this so that everyone who liked it can find me. THIS IS ALL I POST! Come, friends, follow the weirdness…
I have several questions, but I suspect most of them can be answered with “because Victorians.”
I think my favorite has to be the live root vegetables.
I think, after all these years, I have identified the worst “positive” reaction to coming out as a queer woman. This guy was very supportive. He was totally okay with me being into women. And to show his support, he’d try to bond with me like he would with a straight guy — by talking about hot women.
And oh my god, I don’t think I ever quite realized the way most men’s heads worked until then. This guy is older but relatively progressive. He used to work with victims of sexual abuse so he’s usually pretty sensitive to things like that.
Suddenly we were having horrible conversations like:
“Hey, I saw a drunk girl outside. She’s so drunk that her top keeps slipping off and she’s flashing everyone.”
“Holy shit.” *checks outside to make sure she’s okay and has friends to take care of her*
“Yeah, I know you’re into women now so I figured you’d want to take a look too, haha.”
And I just! That reaction is just chilling! Suddenly I was having a straight guy joking with me about women in all kinds of compromised sexual situations, suddenly he was nudging me about every tit in media, suddenly he was talking in graphic objectifying detail about women’s bodies.
It was like I’d been inducted into a boy’s club and it was horrible in there. And all I could think was like… is this genuinely the way you guys talk about us? Are these really your bonding rituals? Do you think all queer women do this to other women?
Like, I’m not going to say that there aren’t any women who are creeps about other women (or hell, even about men), but the sheer lack of shame was kind of shocking. It’s not just this one guy; I’ve gotten it from other “woke” guys, too. This shameless, casual dehumanization of women, like it’s normal, like it’s the only way you can be sexually attracted to a woman. There’s a strange undercurrent of violence to it that feels utterly foreign to me.
I can’t look at a woman too drunk to consent and get excited about seeing her accidentally bared body because I’m thinking “What if that were me? What if that were my friend? What is she going to feel like later? Is she safe?” It’s a scary thing, not a hot one. And it’s kind of disturbing that empathy isn’t the first thought for the men who look at her, too. If anything, there was a sort of aroused disdain for a girl that “sloppy”. (But not so sloppy that they wouldn’t stare at her breasts.)
As a queer woman, I spend so much time fretting about being accidentally weird towards women. Staring too long or too hard, being too close, crossing boundaries. Because I think about all the times men have harassed me and made me feel small and scared and alone and I never want to do that to someone else. I’m not some awkward preteen who’s unsure about sexual boundaries anymore; I’m a grown-ass adult who has a responsibility to not be a creep.
And it’s always so bizarre and frankly kind of horrifying to realize how many other adults do not feel that same responsibility. As much as I hate the simultaneous desexualization and oversexualization of queer women, I found that being treated like “just one of the guys” was so much worse. I try to be careful not to fall into the trap of thinking my own sexuality is innately predatory because of its queerness — and then I’m confronted with sexuality that actually is predatory and it’s like a slap in the face.
God, what must it be like to never worry about the feelings of the person you’re staring at? How liberating. How horrible. How terrifying.
Straight cis men hate and fear homosexuality because they’re terrified that gay men will treat them the way they treat women.
So this guy’s purpose in life is to hang out in a Pokémon Center on Poni Island and tutor one move that only one Pokémon can learn, a Legendary postgame Pokémon from a Hoenn one/four generations ago. And that Pokémon naturally knows that move anyway.
Fuck me, I’m getting a new job. I’ll be standing in a Dunkin Donuts on Staten Island tutoring Spanish. But only if you’re early 19th Venezuelan military leader Simón Bolívar.
I was at the coffeeshop in the village and someone asked me how my llamas are doing, and a woman overheard and told me that when she was a kid, her parents used to have a couple of llamas in their sheep farm, and every single sheep in their flock imprinted on one of the two llamas. Each sheep chose the best most charismatic llama according to mysterious sheep criteria, and never wavered in their ovine loyalty. Each of the two llamas was worshiped by a small sub-flock of devoted sheep who followed him everywhere like Jesus’s apostles and only left their field for transhumance when led by “their” llama. The funniest thing is the way this woman overheard the word “llama” and immediately came to sit next to me to tell me this, like she had waited since childhood to share her bewilderment about the two religious congregations of sheep led by rival llama prophets in her family farm.
not to be reformist but i just realized requiring employers to treat a commute as time on the job would probably make american cities profoundly more habitable
this is a good idea but are we really at a point where we’re not allowed to suggest any improvement short of revolution without having to preface it with “not to be reformist” ???
not to comment out of the tags but we were literally just talking about this in my marxist reading group on sunday about how there needs to be incremental changes in the way things are run before revolution comes (co-ops, community gardens, food programs, etc) so that after capitalism is destroyed we have an educated population that knows how to build systems without recreating capitalist hierarchy and we are faced with the difficult task of bolstering those postcapitalist initiatives insteading of the impossible task of education of a whole population that has no idea what a postcapitalist economy and resource distribution could look like and rebuilding society from scratch
The next system project has entire articles ad essays on how this could look in multiple different ways if you want to read on it more!!
The specific essay i’m thinking of is called Community, Democracy, and Mutual Aid! its a long read at 43 pages but its actually a really good one. There are issues with it like anything but it’s one of the first things that really outlined for me what like dual power is and how revolutionary institutions in place before the toppling of capitalist economy are necessary to function in a postcapitalist world might look and function
The Tumblr left has discovered the idea of a transitional program
My big problem with revolutionaries is that a lot of them are eerily like right wing accelerationists - they’ve got very high acceptable-casualty numbers and just kinda assume the dead will be the Bad People.
One of the more insidious things about the system we live in is that it holds marginalized people hostage. If the revolution were to happen tomorrow, my household would probably not survive two months - we depend on the infrastructure so graciously and generously provided to us by the ruling class to survive, and there simply aren’t sufficient alternative support networks and labour structures to fill that gap. We’re already all hustling as hard as we can using what networks do exist, and working on self-sustainability to the extent we can - this is not theoretical.
So I’m really, really excited to see things like this getting attention. This is what we need our revolution to look like, if we want to make it there together.

It’s also just outright unrealistic and a recipe for crushing defeat. The structures we will need have to already be in place in order for revolution to be successful, and so we have to start building them now; if we wait until things get any worse, it will be too late for that.
Tear it all down!*
*But slowly, and replace what we tear down with things that will last much longer and work much better for human benefit

can’t wait for conservatives to justify the use of human shields
THISTHISTHIS, and linguistic prescriptivism also falls into this category. Completely pointless, historically arbitrary way to keep TALENT + MERIT as secondary qualifiers. “First impressions matter” my ass. Get Gen Xs out of hiring positions
All this also applies to neurodivergent people. Social constructs and social situations can be really difficult to comprehend
whether someone sends you a thank you email literally only tells you whether they were taught to send thank you emails after a job interview. not anything else about them whatsoever (including their courtesy level! like, if i said thank you to you in person, why would i automatically think, “they need an email as well,” unless i was specifically taught that??)
this reminds me of that lecture where someone said “raise your hand if you can tell if someone is right for the job within 60 seconds” and a lot of people raised their hands and the speaker said “you should all be fired and possibly arrested”
gotta be honest, I don’t wanna sound like I’m being anti-religion or anything but those christians who are real casual and matter-of-fact about their belief in hell are so much creepier than the ones who are just furious and vicious about it. Growing up I was exposed to people who genuinely went through life like “OH that was such a nice waitress I hope she believes in jesus before she dies so she doesn’t burn for infinity :S” like they believe that’s just a thing that happens even to well-meaning people and they somehow believe that it’s also fair and correct and no big deal. How do they even function that way. If that’s really what they believe then how do they make it through a single human interaction without that haunting the fuck out of them.
