I kind of love that one of Jane Austen’s biggest fans was the Prince Regent (later George IV). She didn’t think very well of the nobility in general, but she motherfucking hated him, a wastrel who very flagrantly cheated on his wife.
But he loved her writing, was the first recorded purchaser of Sense and Sensibility, and kept copies of her books in all his residences. She never made enough from her writing to live on during her lifetime, so this wasn’t support she could casually toss aside. His librarian kept suggesting ideas for new books to her, which she turned down with exquisite politeness. Much to her aggravation, she found herself obliged to dedicate Emma to the man.
Local Novelist Is So Talented She Can’t Beat Royal Patron Off With A Stick
I’ve thought about it and this is so funny because a moral novelist having to civilly endure being patronized by a dissolute nobleman who loves but also totally doesn’t get her books is exactly the kind of thing that would happen in a Jane Austen novel.
Sammy does do all the assigned reading before every one of his classes and I love him and would love to bully him for it
#i have been saying sam coded but perhaps i am dean coded bc never have i ever done this consistently #assigned reading is stupid unless it's actually stuff you don't know #and like if i am getting All of it in lecture???? #what is the point if u get the info n make an a anyway #i will read articles but do not make me read textbooks #uh well:#supernatural
God this is such a mood (I’ve never been to an Ivy League college like this guy but I’ve been exposed to the same logic taking econ in community college lol)
transcript:
here’s why i left economics. so, when i was a freshman at brown university, i took an econ class called “income, wealth and health inequality in the united states.” this class was taught by president of brown university, christina paxson, and we spent the entire semester learning how to study inequality. and then, at the end of the course, paxson invited us all back to her 2 million dollar mansion, pictured here, for a nice catered dinner, with literal servants. and this experience, this irony, taught me that economists fundamentally view inequality the wrong way. they think about is as a natural fixture of our environment, something that we aren’t implicated in, something that we can study for a semester and then go back to our mansions and enjoy dinner. something that is just there to study as scientists. and that is not true. inequality is a product of specific actions, behaviours, structures, and systems, just like this house, and the way that econ focuses distracts from the question of what the fuck we’re supposed to do.
#me making posts on econ discussion board ‘’’subtley’’’ accusing the professor and textbook of trying to indoctrinate us #fucking HATE that textbook. written by a very evil man from harvard who worked for the bush admin #and it’s one of the best selling college econ textbooks #i mean we still have to study econ but like . not like THAT #cannot wait to review these courses at the end of the semester #taking macro and micro and it’s like I don’t even feel like I’m learning anything bc it is THAT far gone #also I have taken a micro/macro combined before so.
Feel like a lot of people when watching season four forget that dean was Literally just in hell where he was tortured by demons for 40 years and like. Is obviously going to have an intense reaction to sam working with ruby/drinking demon blood because of that. Like obviously the way he treated sam was shitty especially in 4.21 but you CANNOT expect him to be firing with all cylinders with something like that and it’s weird when people act like he’s just being unreasonable or controlling and not that he’s incredibly traumatized and lashing out against something that he views as responsible for it
My only problem with the season/sam and dean’s relationship in it is that it’s framed as “dean is the Righteous Man and sam is wrong for doing something he doesn’t like” and not “dean is incredibly traumatized after being tortured by demons and beginning the process of becoming a demon himself and views that as worse than death so he’ll do anything to stop his little brother from going down the same path.” It’s not dean being very controlling, or just hating demons to hate demons, it’s his own experiences influencing his actions, which is very understandable
#yeah which is why some people being like Oh Dean Is Just Controlling Always #& No Reason Behind It #is like..... well. #really? #dean having issues w control isnt same as it being his only motivation etc #supernatural #hmm ask to tag ?
the intersection of the STWW’s author’s suspension, taggerman spam (what this article calls “imitators” but are really just a few dedicated assholes who are posting copy and pasted spam text and not fanwork), and the timeline of the block feature are coincidental. moreover, this article presents a confused understanding of how the AO3 tagging system actually works, gives a platform to an author who has shown time and time again that they are a bad faith actor who continues to post out of spite as if their perspective is equally legitimate, and conflates several issues (e.g. the racism piece, which is its own discussion!!) in a disingenuous and unhelpful way. it uses a lot of leading statements and draws assumptive conclusions that are incomplete at best and wildly inaccurate and misleading at worst.
i don’t speak for AO3 or the OTW in any way, I just wrangle a few fandoms there, but this article really just. it’s infuriating to think that this is going to be how people with only a passing familiarity with the wank will understand and think of AO3–that this framing is what people are going to remember. “trolls accomplished something”. no they fucking didn’t, all they did was make our lives miserable for a week! they accomplished fucking nothing other than hurting a lot of people, most of whom don’t even have control over the fucking problems they supposedly want addressed! they wasted hours and hours of our lives, and you’re going to reward them with this narrative?? why??
Vox did an article about the whole Sexy Times With Wangxian nonsese
We really are in some sort of timeline
hey. I really wanted to like this article, but I think it was extremely poorly researched and framed. the bottom line is that sexy times with wangxian actually has almost nothing to do with things like the ongoing development of the block feature etc. that’s been in discussion/the works for years and to credit STWW and associated harassment of AO3 volunteers and staff with a change that was actually a result of a lot of volunteers’ years of thoughtful and unpaid labor is pretty fucking insulting and sends a dangerous message: “if you just attack and annoy these real human beings enough, you’ll get what you want” when this is patently not true and only encourages people to continue treating us like we’re cold, faceless enemies as opposed to just some fans who give our time and energy to the archive because we want to. here is one such announcement of the ongoing work on the mute/block function from june of last year.

#read that article earlier this week through my news aggregator and was. there were obvious gaps #did not realize block/mute had been in development that long that’s poor research at best . hopefully not just disingenuous #makes sense though. #im not like 100% w this post but i do support the ao3 so I’d prefer correct information circulate w this article #otoh I think this post [comment] is still a bit light on what to do abt fandom racism but I am not the one to make suggestions #it’s complicated and i am not a librarian or archivist #I want to read more genuine discussion though. that understands what ao3 is #also probably there should be discussion about parallel fan archives for people who are So opposed to ao3. im not being condescending here #I think it would be helpful #there are completely conflicting needs desires etc and probably similar archive would be helpful fir people who need it #tho not really talking abt racism in fandom here. think ao3 can do do something to address user experience there #besides just mute/block #though that needs to happen #will be helpful for a lot of people for a lot of reasons
the headers on the beach boys wiki make them sound like a small troubled nation

LOL yep that’s the day job! I started last year after graduating, working on the NASA side of things with the mission doing social media/outreach, so I’m going to do my obligatory HUBBY LINK DROP: insta, twitter, fb
titanic au? dean draws cas like one of his french girls
Answer:
endverse cas would make the joke one quiet night at camp chitaqua. the only light would be a few candles and the joint sitting between cas’ fingers. dean hasn’t gotten the courage yet, to touch, but he’s there, watching cas in his fallen glory, heaven chained to earth, and cas sees him watching. he was supposed to leave when everyone else did, was supposed to head to his shack of a spot (worse than everyone else’s, naturally. he gave the better ones to the others. he wishes now he’d been selfish about that one god damn decision) pass out there at 5am after making a new game plan and wake up at 7am with a swig of whiskey, but it’s 11:32 pm and he’s still sitting on an uncomfortable pillow on the floor and watching castiel as he basks above him on the raised altar of his bed. castiel smirks when he makes eye contact with dean and dean doesn’t break it, he’s too lost in his thoughts, or castiel’s eyes, maybe. and when cas lets out a slow breath of smoke, and says ‘draw me like one of your french girls’ in some mock flirty tone, dean cant find it in himself to say no. he reaches into the large pocket that sits by his right knee and pulls it open, setting his field notebook free. he grabs it, small in all it’s compact righteousness, and digs for a pencil in another pocket. thank god for cargo pants. or whoever the inventor of pants was, they’re one in the same. cas quirks his eyebrow when he sees dean actually preparing, and dean scowls at his amusement. he takes a deep breath and finally looks up, he’s situated now. he gestures to cas by using his own shirt as an example, he tugs on his shirts collar, exposing the smallest sliver of his collarbone and shoulder. he see’s castiels eyes darken, and he unbuttons his shirt. dean watches his fingers as they undo each one. one. two. three. four. cas must see the way dean flinches at the prospect of seeing another pop open because he stops, loosely guiding the edges of his shirt so they fall open effortlessly. he stretches out like a cat too, pillows the side of his face in the crook of his arm and takes a hit with the other. the glow of candles against his skin is like grace and the skin exposed is like the loss of it, and dean can barely look away. he does, eventually, and begins to draw as castiel begins lazy smalltalk with dean. dean lets that voice soothe him, the peace is a gift and dean intends to wring it dry. and he draws, mimics the flowing fabric with the light twist of his pencil, darkens the scruff on cas’ cheeks with the pad of his pinky finger, follows the form down to its toes with an unbroken line. when he finishes, he blushes. its been a long time since he’s drawn, and he’s glad he’s still got it. he doesnt even notice when castiel stands and approaches him, putting out a gentle hand to ask for the sketch. dean looks up at him, at this broken beautiful piece of marble, and he complies. it’s all he can do. he watches cas’ face while he looks over the work. he hears the ‘its beautiful’ barely a whisper. he feels the book being placed back in his hands and then a soft hand coming down to stroke through dean’s hair. he leans into the touch without meaning to, and he almost freezes, but the thumb and its mesmerizing run across his cheekbone wont let him out of its calming hold. dean sinks deeper, but hears castiel’s voice, clear as a bell. ‘dean, let me save you, if only for tonight’ and dean nods into a soft palm and lets himself get pulled onto the altar with an angel.
