May I ask what you mean by a shift in the natural hair community? I just went natural myself and I'm slowly learning how to take care of my hair
On Twitter, there’s a recent trend started by professional hairstylist and they’re just discouraging the use of oils, leave in conditioners (and the like) and hair butters because they feel like we’ve all been bamboozled in the natural hair community as far as purchasing hundreds of dollars in products and wasting so much time during wash days.
I agree to a certain extent. I love oils, my hair wouldn’t be where it is without oils but I do think we all have been doing the most with our wash day routines.
Every 5-7 days, we should be washing our hair with shampoo, NOT with a cowash. Cowashes do not cleanse the hair. Yes, shampoo strips our natural oils but that’s okay, that’s literally the whole point. Shampoo is to just clean our hair. That’s it. It’s not to soften it, make it feel silky or whatever our expectations are.
Then we follow up with a conditioner for moisture. They suggest to not deep condition every week but I still do! I like deep conditioners than regular rinse out conditioners.
Then instead of leave ins, hair butters, etc etc. We should just style with either a gel or a wrap foam or mousse.
That’s it. They say to not even bother with leave in conditioners because you can’t add extra moisture to hair that’s already been moisturized. That I can agree with.
For me, I’ve been blow drying a little more because my shrinkage is too much and I have a lot of different textures in my hair so when it sheds, my hair will start developing a lot of tangles and webbing that can lead to locs … which is not what I’m going for!
I just think that you should stick to what works for YOU because it’s not feasible for everyone to go to a hairstylist every 1-2 weeks to get their hair done.
But I do believe that we should just shampoo, condition/deep condition, as we’re rinsing thats when you’re detangling your hair and then you style your hair however you want!
