People keep requesting to add my fic to collections and I don’t know if they know this, and I don’t know if people who allow their own stories know this, but once you add your story to a collection, the owner of the collection can perform fuckery with your story.

Like, I’m REALLY glad that collections exist, and I’ve put my work into some collections when I made those things specifically for those collectuons. Collections are a useful tool for things like bangs, where the stories need to be hidden until the reveal….. but that also means that the person in charge has the ability to hide your works from the public. Like, without you agreeing, because you already “agreed” to that by submitting to the collection. Which means works you previously had available suddenly disappear from where people can find them.

What I’m saying is please stop random requests to random people to be in your random collections. I know you probably don’t have ill intentions, but there’s no way to tell. And if you’re getting requests to be part of random collections, please be aware that if you approve them, you won’t be the only one in control of some elements of your posted stories, including whether or not they “exist” to the average reader. If they mark the collection as “unrevealed,” you story stops being accessible to the public. And they have the option to mark the collection “anonymous” which I’m pretty sure turns the author from being You to being Anonymous.

And I say all of this because I have seen this happen to people. I have had friends whose stories “disappeared” because they approved a random collection invite and the collection owner turned everything “unrevealed” (likely without even knowing or understanding that it would hide it for EVERYONE not just hide the collection so no one would see they had it, it’s not like a private bookmark). And while I haven’t seen anyone do this maliciously (at least none I can prove) I can see where it could be USED maliciously. So please, just be careful out there.

I wish AO3 had a way to auto decline collection invites- they gave us a way to auto-accept, so I don’t understand why the opposite isn’t true. If I wanted my story to be part of a collection, I’d submit it myself.

Uhh okay, so someone replied to this that they didn’t know how to remove a work from a collection.

Copy and past the following link, and where it says “yourusernamehere” type in your AO3 pseud.

    https://archiveofourown.org/users/yourusernamehere/collection_items?approved=true

This should take you to a page where your works that have been approved for collections resides. You can remove your works from collections by selecting “rejected” instead from the drop down menus.

If the direct link doesn’t work: go to your AO3 dashboard, click “collections” on the side bar, click “manage collected items” button at the top right, click “approved” button at the top right, and you’ll be at the right page to remove your works from collections.

hey! so from someone who tried her hand at making a collection to collect fics centered around a specific theme, I found out a super cool thing! you can create collections of bookmarks.

want to add a fic you love to that super-specific collection you made for Fics With Werewolves Set In London? bookmark it and add the bookmark to your collection!

no fuss, no muss, no permission required from the author (since it’s YOUR bookmark), no chance of fucking up their fic (since it’s YOUR bookmark), presto chango, you have a collection that rocks but doesn’t rock a poor fic writer’s boat!

Thank you for this info, this is very valuable (and relieving) knowledge.

So please, as readers, this is a MUCH BETTER option!!

I…did not know any of this, and my work is in some collections. Thank you.

This post is going around right now, but with outdated info. Since I made this post, AO3 updated collections so that now if a collection changes status (goes anon or hidden) the authors of all the works in it will receive an email notification with instructions on how to remove themselves from the collection if this was done against their will.

The above is STILL good info to have about how collections work, especially for people that make them to be aware of what they’re doing (and you should still make bookmark collections if you’re just using it for yourself), but authors no longer have to worry that these things will occur with no notification.

hey writers if you want to make a metaphor for racism, please maybe remember that racism is literally based on nothing. Africans weren’t enslaved en masse because the Robo-Musa threatened to destroy the world, they were enslaved because it was economically rewarding and politically convenient. If at any point your allegory for racism includes “so <oppressed group> did this major catastrophe and” then you have not only missed the point but you are literally reinforcing the ideas that racism have let racism self-perpetuate (that e.g. black people are naturally dangerous and violent and must be contained or begrudgingly accepted by the Nice White People)

Just a personal note on this, ‘cause I’ve had some folks ask me how orogenes in the Broken Earth trilogy can be an allegory for oppressed groups, given that orogenes actually are dangerous.

I was completely aware of the Unfortunate Implications of orogenes as black people/Jewish people/closeted queer people/neuroatypical people and having Special Powers. That was the point, actually. At the time I was early in THE FIFTH SEASON, I was watching Ferguson unfold, and listening to Darren Wilson’s bullshit about how Mike Brown seemed superhuman (or subhuman) to him.  And the whole time I kept thinking, “So-the-fuck-what if he was a demon? He was still an unarmed 18 year old whom you shot 10 times while he was running away.” From that to stories of doctors assuming black people aren’t capable of feeling pain to the same degree as white people – I was just done with it.  Fucking done.

Because it should not matter if we are big, or dark-skinned, or wearing “villain clothing” like hoodies, or whatever. All that shit’s just an excuse anyway; racist white people are scared of us when we’re small and light-skinned and wearing business suits.  The problem isn’t us. The problem is chickenshit white people and the imaginary monsters they carry around inside them.

And over the course of the Broken Earth trilogy I poked at this notion. The society of the Stillness could at any point choose to accommodate orogenes in a way that is safe for all… but it chooses not to. Orogene parents have no trouble raising orogene kids. Orogenes in communities police each other the same way non-orogenes do – because at the end of the day, they’re all people. Even if some of those people are extraordinary, they can live together if there is respect.

Black people are extraordinary in so many ways. Not superhuman, obvs – but we aren’t white, which is what this society insists upon calling “normal.” We will never be white, and that’s fine. We will never be “ordinary” in the eyes of racists – and we shouldn’t have to pretend otherwise. We shouldn’t have to stoop if we’re naturally tall, or speak softly if we’re naturally deep-voiced, just so that small-minded people will be less afraid in our presence.  Our children shouldn’t have to think and act as if they’re older than they are, just because white people misjudge their ages. The problem isn’t us. And a good, diverse society, one that actually accommodates and respects all of its members, should be able to handle both the ordinary and extraordinary with no trouble.

So: I agree with the OP; don’t reinforce racist notions in your worldbuilding. Or if you do, make sure you interrogate the fuck out of them, and make it clear that the problem is still racists, not race.

Okay I’m actually curious now so i made a uquiz to test how well you can recognize car logos

    https://uquiz.com/JJZ9bg

It gets harder as you go but hopefully there’s fun to be had in the frustration :)

    So far I have learned:

    • People who get one of the first two wrong are lucky to get 50%
    • There’s a few people missing the last few questions bc they aren’t sure what a make is (it’s the brand of car. car names are listed Make and Model) or they think I want them to write a model under the make
    • Please Please Please I Told You What The Right Answer Is For The Nissan Question I Want You To Get It Right…

I missed two that just… like… do people actually buy those around here? I was actually shocked I got most of them.

Fun fact: the guys at our college’s geology department prop out the doors with their samples. I totally understand why but as someone whose work with samples is necessarily super delicate and sterile it fucks me up so bad

lol idk if you watch nautilus live at all but watching them process bio & geo samples side by side evokes exactly this Thing (the descriptions are gold too… “here are the 30 steps we use to preserve bio samples, and as for rocks, well, we let them dry, bag them, & put them in the Rock Box)

Good to know there’s enough Biologist Salt™ to go around

Paleontologists occupy a weird and highly uncomfortable slice of this Venn Diagram

My dude, we hit rocks with hammers out in the field! (“Tell me your true nature,” I whisper to the brown-ish weathered surface of the outcrop before me, and bring down my hammer with all the strength of my conviction that this is NOT the Madison Limestone.)

In the lab I broke samples up with a hand-cranked hydraulic press. Igneous rock is tough stuff. These rocks didn’t sit around for almost two billion years, three supercontinents, and the best efforts of the Amazon River to wear them away, just to get broken up by some sissy with an Estwing. Nope, it took a hydraulic press, FIVE TONS of pressure, and a five-foot-two undergrad who was very glad to be wearing hearing protection.

    Meanwhile, in archaeology:

Archaeologist #1: I’ve gathered this carbon sample with a perfectly clean trowel from a carefully selected stratum whilst wearing gloves. Time to wrap it carefully in chemically-neutral air-tight packages to avoid modern C-14 contamination before it gets to the lab!

Archaeologist #2: Hey how about this 150-year-old fire brick? Should I just chuck it on the back of the truck with a quick label so that we can hose it off later and then maybe break it open? Cool.

Archaeologist #3: Not sure if this is a bone or a rock. Guess I better lick it to find out. Oh cool, it’s a bone, bag it up!

Ok but also keep in mind all three archaeologists are probably on the same dig

    A Writer’s Guide to Viewpoints

    thecaffeinebookwarrior :

Most of us know that there are three major viewpoints from which stories are told:

    • First Person – “I tell my own story with the pronoun ‘I’ because I’m just so damn awesome.”
    • Second Person – “You are a character in this story, and you can’t do anything about it.  If it makes you uncomfortable, tough shit.”
    • Third Person – “He muttered himself and pulled the blankets over his head, wishing this asshole would stop narrating his life.”

Those are the three viewpoints, and that’s all there is to it.  Just pick your favorite, and you’re ready to go.  Right?

    Well.  Not exactly.

You see, my fellow scribblers, there are actually multiple sub categories of each viewpoint – beyond even the “Third Person Omniscient” or “Third Person Subjective.”

    To be specific:

    First Person:

    • First Person Informant
    • First Person Reminiscent
    • Unreliable

    Second Person:

    • Reader as Character
    • I Substitute

    Third Person:

    • Objective
    • Limited
    • Multiple Selective Omniscience
    • Omniscient

This might seem overwhelming, but fear not!  Each perspective is fairly easy to break down, and ultimately, apply to your own work and understanding of literature.  This post will elucidate each.

So let’s take charge of our narratives and delve in, like the active protagonists we are.

Second person is most useful when you want to put the reader in a situation and make them FEEL it. And when it works, it’s devastating. When it doesn’t, it’s really fucking trite or just flat out off-putting.

I tend to shift POV in the third person in most of my stories, but with a limited lens and limited scope. POV shifts usually call for a section break, and in some stories the section breaks actually get labeled by the POV. Sometimes the POV shifts by chapter.

Authors often tend to get comfortable with a POV–Seanan McGuire almost always writes in the first person, for example.

I find that tense and perspective often go hand in hand, though it varies by subject matter. When I write time travel, the POV character’s present is generally present tense, their past (even if technically in the future) is past tense. Everything else I usually write in third person past tense because if I don’t, I start fucking up tenses. (Which I do anyway whenever I write a time travel fic and then switch to something else.)

I find first person easier to deal with in original fiction than fanfiction, and I’m not sure why. It jars me to see fanfic written in the first person, and it almost never happens in the fandoms I’m in in works I read. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done and done well, it’s just not typical.

For me the most jarring perspective is when the first person voice changes mid story. It’s not *wrong*, per se (I think Children of Blood And Bone did this?) it’s just that it’s harder for me, the reader, to keep track of, especially in an audiobook setting, who “I” is referring to. Easier if the audiobook narrator is changing voices per character, I guess. This was probably done with the greatest, kick-you-in-the-teeth impact in Mira Grant’s Newsflesh, where the narrator changes for Reasons and it’s never not utterly devastating in that series.

Keying/graffiti-ing someones car is old news now if someone cheats we go at their wardrobe with a seam ripper

yknow what? Fuck you *unstitches all your shirts and jeans*

My mother did this to my father once. They got into an argument, my very pregnant and hormonal mother stormed off…except they lived in a tiny apartment so the only place to go was to shut herself into the closet for a good long sulk. And while she was sitting in there, fuming, she looked up and saw her sewing kit on the shelf, and all my father’s uniforms hanging right there.

So she picked one shirt and one pair of trousers, carefully, methodically ripped every third stitch out of every seam, and then hung them back up together so that he would be likely to pick them at the same time. This took her a couple hours, so by the time she was done, the anger had worn down. She came out, she and my father had a talk that ended in apologies, after which they were tired and went to bed. My mother swears up and down that she meant to warn my father about the sabotaged clothes in the morning, but he wore a different uniform set and they were both still feeling a little raw, so she didn’t want to bring up the fight again. She decided to tell him that night instead.

    And then she forgot.

Anyway, about four days later, my father apparently came home roughly an hour after he left for work, his clothes slowly, gently shredding off his body, the most bewildered expression on his face. “Paula,” he said, his voice mildly shell-shocked. “Paula, my clothes are broken.”

My mother promptly burst out laughing so hard that she went into labor. And that’s the story of my birth, heralded by petty vengeance and utter confusion.

Ao3 r professional scammers cause they be getting u chumps to give them like quadruple the amount of money they be asking for and they don’t even gotta do nothing. And they don’t even gotta show y’all what they doin with it. I’m bout to enter the fanfiction website business

    1. They didn’t have to ask for more to get more because we value what they do.

    2. They tell us exactly what they’re doing with it, I just read the budget, it’s publicly available.

    3. They’re making sitewide improvements but it takes time, complicated by keeping the site running while they’re doing them. They have budgeted a big chunk of money toward making a block function happen, but these things take time, not just money.

This is all publicly available knowledge on the latest idk 5 entries of their blog on the front page of the site.

If you don’t like AO3, you neither have to give it money or use it. But it would be great if people didn’t actively lie about it.

hey ao3 can you like give the extra $38k you made from this month’s funds drive to charity

You know it legally is a charity, right?

If x charity aims for £10, but gets £15, would you expect then to give back the extra five or give it then to another charity? No. Any extra costs go into the “rainy day” fund; sometimes servers crash or break, sometimes false reports are made that require the legal team, sometimes you need to hire coders or what not to implement new features or fix bugs or deal with broken code …

The money they aimed for is the bare minimum, which goes towards things like basic server costs and domain names and legal advice and so forth, but they don’t just “pocket” the rest (as people claim). It’s not a business. It has no advertisements. It needs some “rainy day” cash to function.

You can’t ask a charity to give money to another charity.

It needs what it gets to function and improve.

    kiena-tesedale replied to this post

They don’t “pocket” excess money. They have a publicly accessible budget - waaaay more info than most charities, in fact. In it, you can clearly see where each dollar goes. (Also, you are vastly underestimating either how much traffic AO3 gets or how much servers/hosting costs.)

In my experience, people who don’t work in web design and hosting just have no concept of how heavy a load something like AO3 would have. Not only is the traffic absolutely buck wild, but the quantity of data that archive needs to store is fuckoff crazy. I’m talking “more than the library of congress” crazy. The only reason it doesn’t require Netflix levels of data serving is that it’s text based rather than video.

AO3 is in the top 300 websites in the world, and the top 100 in the US. It is the number 2 literature website.

Number 2 in the entire world. JSTOR is 20.

It sees about 6 million people a day. About 250k an hour. Each of those people is loading multiple pages, many are running searches that execute on literally hundreds of potential variables per search. The demands involved are astronomical.

JSTOR, btw, makes 85 million dollars a year.

It’s 18 ranks below AO3′s traffic, and takes in 650 times the amount of money.

But let’s say you think that’s an unfair comparison. Would you say that the Project Gutenberg Literature Archival Group- another text based archive that handles literature operating outside traditional copyright requirements- is more similar?

Because it sees all of 4% of the traffic that AO3 handles.

    Care to guess its budget?

    Double that of AO3.

AO3 is doing shit on the kind of shoestring budget that I fully, 100% cannot comprehend. And that’s just the archival service.

The 130k also pays for the OTW’s legal team, which they use to defend the right of fandom to fucking exist.

It’s absolutely batshit fucked up that people are fighting to have the OTW defunded and AO3 shut down. They are the only organized group that actually stands directly between fandom- all the art and the fics and the vids and the music and the chats and the memes and everything we love about interactive, transformative work- and an incalculable amount of lawsuits.

    This.

I donated when the tally was <$2000 this time around. Within two days it was well over 250k, on a request of 50k.

Why, you might ask, do people toss money at this when they know it’s already met goal?

BECAUSE WE KNOW THEY USE THE MONEY TO IMPROVE THE SITE.

They use it to buy new servers. They use it to hire professional IT folks to make coding upgrades and bugfixes. Big influxes of cash mean an easier time handling new projects and new ideas.

I spend a couple thousand hours a year reading, writing and posting fic on AO3. At the $20 per year I normally toss into the kitty, it is a huge bargain.

And if Disney tries to sue someone for writing fanfic? I know that OTW will be there with lawyers. And that’s important to me. The mere fact that it exists has stopped more lawsuits than we will ever know, prevented more nuisance cease-and-desist letters, because they know that we, fanfic writers, are DEFENDED. The mere existence of the legal defense fund means they know a nuisance C&D letter might be answered, that an actual lawsuit isn’t going to be able to bully someone who can’t afford to fight a big corp.

Mathematics, which is fine because I can talk for an hour easily about Romanesco Broccoli, bubbles, rainbows and chaos theory.

(also the last time this came around I told my husband the number and he said, “Jesus Christ” and I was like, it’s not that big a deal and he was all, “No, that’s the classification for that number.” It is possible I married a bigger nerd than I am.)

If you can’t take your dad on adventure walks through a home improvement store (and I wouldn’t recommend it with the pandemic) you can throw some spoons into his favorite body of water for enrichment!

[footage of the inside of an ordinary Eastern-European home, taken with a handheld phone camera, the man filming is walking from the living room to the back door of the house]

man, narrating in russian: Every fucking year, this time of the year, the pond at my backyard gets infested. What do ponds get infested with? Frogs? Poisonous weeds? Geese? No. Not my pond.

[The man opens the back door, stepping out into a garden. Three or four nude, human-like figures dash from the borders of a pond back into the water.]

man: Rusalki! I don’t know where they come from or how they get here, and I can’t afford to hire an exterminator every year. I can’t let my cat outside anymore. Last year a rusalka managed to drown a whole deer in my pond, the stench was unbearable.

[He walks as he speaks, approaching the pond. There are several eerily beautiful female beings peering at him from under the surface, their long hair floating in the murky water. Their eyes are gleaming in an unhuman way. The man holding the camera stops to film them.]

man, calm and deadpan: What the fuck are all of you staring at. Get jobs or something.

[One of the rusalki, smaller than the others and clearly not a fully matured adult, slowly reaches out of the water with her white, thin hand, grasping his ankle. He appears unconcerned.]

man: You can’t drown me, you little idiot. You’re too small. Shoo!

[A loud thud startles the rusalki, making them scatter. A second thud makes it clear these are the approaching footsteps of something massive. The man turns around and points the camera at what appears to be a house, walking past above the treeline with chicken-like legs]

man, now yelling: IF YOUR HOUSE SHITS ON MY YARD AGAIN I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD-

This post is a joy and a delight.

    this is the energy

A drawing of the man from original post. He is flipping off a house above him with chicken legs and a woman yelling at him from a window, while a rusalka stands nearly off screen, watching them

Okay I HAD to do this was just perfect

tfw you’ve been playing one boss battle too long and you finally finish it and save and exit and you’ve still got the music playing in your head even though the game is closed. Not quite full-on auditory hallucination, but jeez

I’ve had auditory hallucinations before… when my son was an infant, he had this little bed that played a beepy little lullaby and it really settled him and he had a fussy period where it was the only thing and it got so I’d hear the lullaby whether or not it was playing because I was THAT sleep deprived. This is just… my brain getting stuck, I guess?

I feel like I need to say this, as I’ve seen some concerning fandom purity bullshit crossing my dash.

This blog is unapologetically pro AO3.

I support them and all they do, may they continue to do it for decades to come.

Imagine being famous celebrity Kamilah al Jamil, dying and going to the afterlife, walking into the office of the Architect(s) of your entire afterlife experience, and seeing a framed photo of your long-dead, way less successful sister in said Architect’s office because she and her rando friends reformed the entire afterlife system and are directly responsible for you and everyone else not being tortured by chainsaw bears forever.  How do you even react to that?

Kamilah: *wakes up in the afterlife*

Literally everyone: oh wow, aren’t you Tahani’s sister???

“I am a simple person with simple wants,” I say, scrolling through AO3 and ignoring fics for a variety of petty reasons

#my wants are simple#but my dislikes are many and complex#but I’ll begrudgingly read fics I ignored after getting through the tags#and whaddya know I was right I didnt like them  (x)

also related: the moment you run out of fics on your tag of choice, sigh, and then begrudgingly lower your standards and look again

The moment where you’re reduced to reading fics that don’t meet your standards at all and one of them unexpectedly becomes one of your favourite fics ever and you’re kind of mad about it.
