NobaMaki Hints From Gege (SPOILER ALERT!)
Okay, I promised anon I’ll talk about the hint and potentials for NobaMaki that I think Gege might intentionally give us because he can develop it if he decides to make NobaMaki become canon or semi-canon. Even though there are so many hints but I would only talk 5 important points.
- Nobara’s type is Oda Nobunaga
In the official fanbook, Gege said Nobara’s type is Oda Nobunaga. If you don’t know him, he was the head of the powerful Oda clan. See the pattern?
Oda Nobunaga -> member of Oda clan (powerful clan) -> he was the head of Oda clan
Zenin Maki -> member of Zenin clan (one of the big three sorcerers family) -> she wants to be the head of Zenin clan
Yuuji stated even though he still doesn’t completely understand the Sorcerer World but he can tell Maki is really strong from the way she walks (or in other words, her charisma). We also see Maki normally takes the leadership role for Tokyo students.
- Maki’s type is someone stronger than her
This isn’t just her type but also something she aspire to be, a strong person. But, Maki has internalized an unhealthy idea of what getting stronger is: not showing any weakness. Of course, she has, and that’s fine because everybody has it. I think Nobara is the one who can help her realize the idea is wrong (Keep reading because I’ll explain the reason of it later).
- Parallel in their backstories
They both come from environments where they had to shut everyone else out because they never feel “at home” in the places that they’re supposed to call “home”.
- They tend to reject other people
Nobara doesn’t let people in easily. Only a few people can “sit” in her life and even if someone manages to do it, she isn’t openly expresses how she cares about them. We can see that based on how she interacts with Yuuji, Megumi, and even Fumi (her childhood friend)
Nobara covers how she truly feels from Yuuji and Megumi.
BUT when it comes to Maki, Nobara openly shows she cares for her and want to be close with her as possible.
Just Nobara being Maki’s simp
She also worried when she learns Maki might be in dangerous situation and didn’t think twice to help her.
However, she was kinda embarrassed when Maki caught her told Yuuji to do his best for Maki’s sake. I think that’s weird because Nobara is a confident person and why she can’t covers how she truly feels the way she usually did?
having gay panicblushing because Maki heard her conversation with Yuuji and Panda
On the other hand, if Nobara doesn’t let people in EASILY, Maki NEVER let people in. Thanks to her family, she doesn’t let herself lean on others or feels being cared by others. Maki always repress her emotions when someone shows they care for her, but she couldn’t help but feel moved.
Maki always avoid being accepted and cared
- Maki and Nobara are blinded
Every character in JJK has flawed viewpoints but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong. Rather I prefer to think of them as “out of balance”.
Maki’s primary character flaw comes not from being wrong but lacks understanding. This makes sense if you think about it, she went through abuse from the Zenin clan, treated as a servant and they’re constantly looking down on her. So, she shutting everyone else, all their hurtful words. She doesn’t want to integrate the viewpoints of other people and never let herself leans on others because it’s her “defense system”. She also never want to accept her weakness because of it.
For Nobara, her response is the same as Maki. She tends to just shut out everyone else’s opinions all the time, she treats everyone else like enemies. Not that she’s incapable of being friendly, it just her “defense system” because she avoids the vulnerability of letting people too close.
Nobara found someone she opened up to in that village, Saori. After believing she couldn’t open up to anybody else in the village and when she loses that person, it hurts her a lot, hence why she avoids that vulnerability. This is why in one episode we see Nobara thanked Yuuji after he saved her and a boy but she immediately back to acts bossy and hard to please.
The consequence of these, they keep getting blindsided. Nobara loses her left eye in the fight against Mahito because she not listening to Nanami. Maki failed because she was too obsessed to prove herself stronger than anyone else in Zenin clan. (Symbolic, Nobara lose her eye and Maki always wears glasses, both of them are “blind”)
What they need to learn is they can lean on others but still being strong individuals and I think they can help each other to learn it. Nobara needs someone who can make her want to be close, so she can learn being close to others and express how she truly feels toward them isn’t that bad. Maki needs someone who truly accepts her, someone who helps her accept her weakness, someone who thinks “she’s enough” and support her to be stronger.
Maki is the one who can “easily” enter Nobara’s life and Nobara is the one who always supports Maki, the one who truly accepts her. Nobara can help Maki to accepts her weakness. In that sense, they’re perfectly complement each other.
Gege reads works from bl and gl Mangaka and said them interseting works. However, the chance NobaMaki become canon is 50:50 because romance isn’t the main theme of JJK.
