Discourse Community, this phrase in general made me look up the words separately for more clarity and understanding. Discourse is written or spoken communication or debate. Community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common or a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. By dissecting the term you allow for maximum understanding when you add these two words back together to create the term that is discussed in our textbook. Sometimes you can know the meaning of a word but not the definition or how to exactly explain the meaning. When you go to separate definitions or root of the word then you begin to understand how and why terms such as this are created.
College is a discourse community and my major which is political science another discourse community, more specifically categorized. A job or workplace can be a discourse community but the more you narrow it down the more common characteristics you and your discourse community share. If you are in any groups or organizations then you have a discourse community. Even if you are not in anything that would be normally considered as such your age, gender, race groups you into a discourse community because there are like characteristics.
