SOMEONE MADE THIS HANAKO-KUN ANIMATIC AND I’M CRYING. I’d never seen this particular song before but 1. it’s good and sadly too relatable to me and 2. it is perfect for this series. And the amazing art makes it even better.
ED Note: You thought that was all, but there’s another strip!! Actually, I wanna dedicate this edit to @blisschild, who is the best TL an ED can ask for, and also got me the very best birthday gift ever! An official Long Cat! ❤
Qiu Tong’s elusive mom makes an appearance! Or rather only her voice does. So “the company” mention confirms it is work that she’s at all the time, which is at least slightly better that the other possibility that she was just relentlessly running around buying homes and remodeling them for kicks. But lady, you shouldn’t make rules about your daughter’s dating life if you’re never actually around to be involved with her life at all.
The fact Qiu Tong doesn’t couldn’t even get a shot of her mom bothering to look at her for for her PHONE is so sad, dang.
#nev reads their story #and that's it for tonight! #wow we're almost caught up #there might be time left over next time even but i can fill it with more barbie or whatever else
I GUESS MOPHEAD HAS ALREADY FORGOTTEN HE TECHNICALLY SORTA AGREED TO DATING THAT ONE GIRL? Though I guess “do what you want” after being relentlessly badgered may not constitute an agreement for him, which is completely fair and makes sense.
I obviously prefer “fries before guys” to the other expression, but think its REALLY funny if you’re a guy grousing about your lesbian bff. “SO SHE’LL GO FOR WHAT’S DELICIOUS AND FILLING AND ITS NEVER GONNA BE A GUY well i guess that makes sense”. Also funny that Mophead would dare to say things like this when he like counseled her that she was not being attentive enough to her girlfriend like five days ago.
This is another heavy one, showing us that this comic dipping its toes into social critique wasn’t a one time thing.
It was implied before, but this directly confirms that Sun Jing getting so angry about her girlfriend being victim-blamed wasn’t simply out of love and righteous fury, but because she’s faced similar comments and felt trapped and small because of them herself. Outside her school uniform, we don’t really see Sun Jing wear skirts, and sadly, it appears this is not her choice. She actually likes short skirts that emphasize her long legs and general tallness, but people bought into victim blaming rhetoric and explicitly forbade her from wearing them.
So when Sun Jing was shouting at that teacher, she was also shouting at all the adults who bought her down. “She can wear what she wants” was also “I should be able to wear what I want. I wish I could.”
And just how frustrating and defeatist the sentiment of “we can’t ask bad people to change so let’s just protect ourselves” is comes across so well here. Of course we can. That’s why we have education, laws, pushes for social change! If we don’t ask people to take responsibility, if we instead put all the responsibility on the victims, the cycle just continues. History has shown that. Society has shown that.
But the comic does end on a note of hope- even as Sun Jing was limited and made afraid growing up, we see that its still possible for her to grow into a confident adult who chases freedom. She isn’t in the flowing white dress that traditionally symbolizes a ~maiden’s innocence~ like in her father’s original vision- you can’t be a woman and not experience obstacles in this world, you can’t keep your innocence and confidence untarnished. But even if you experience that hardship, even if you can’t maintain the innocence and freedom of a child who had never been pushed down, you can still be amazing. You can live, and love, and pursue that ideal of freedom. The camera in Sun Jing’s hand shows us her passion and curiosity for the world are going strong. I think that’s what the comic is trying to communicate here. Life isn’t as simple as the vision Sun Jing’s father had for her, but that doesn’t mean that idea is something we should give up on.
this was for june 1st, which is children’s day!
Editor’s note: So the kid calls Qiu Tong and Sun Jing “Sister” but they aren’t related or anything. I guess it’s a respectful way to address an older female (who might treat you kindly like a sister would), kinda like “onee-san” in Japanese. He’s showed up before.
Time to liveblog the webcomic Their Story by Tan Jiu! It’s a manhua (Chinese comic) so we’ll be using a version translated by yaoi-blcd. I’m going to mainly be reblogging from the archive here. If I need to talk about a longer sequence, I’ll repost it though.
I’ve actually already read Their Story, but @inlustris requested a proper liveblog where I revisit it and talk in depth. I’m happy to do that! Their Story is a cute slice of life, slow-burn romance between two girls, the rambunctious, athletic Sun Jing and the sweet Qiu Tong, with occasional interludes about Sun Jing’s (mainly male) friends. Let’s get to it!
The tag for this liveblog will be #nev reads their story .
