okay so people seem to like this idea so here’s my proposal!
So as mentioned, each participant will suggest an opera they think fits the bill for Women’s History Month. It would be helpful to recommend a production as well, in case the person who gets your suggestion isn’t sure where to start–though everyone is certainly welcome to find their own production in lieu of the suggestion, if it suits them.
Also, thanks to @lizlensky’s wonderful idea, I’m adding another piece to this: we will each suggest an opera that was written by a woman.
so here’s how it’ll work:
Once we’ve established a group, each person will send me a suggestion for two operas:
1) An opera that is significant for Women’s History Month (strong female leads, feminist morals, etc.)
2) an opera that was written by a woman (composer or librettist)
(since the the above may unfortunately be hard to find full productions of)
a production of an opera (that meets the requirements for #1) that was conducted or directed by a woman.
-The opera should be available through YouTube, Opera On Video, or another site that doesn’t require a subscription/log-in.
-If you suggest a specific production that doesn’t have subtitles (I think the majority of us can read English and French?), see if you can also find a link to a libretto/detailed summary of the opera for the viewer to follow along with.
-Each participant will watch their assigned opera(s) before the end of March.
-After watching, each participant will post some content on what they’ve watched. Whatever they feel comfortable with/moved to create: A review, a liveblog of your reactions, a gifset/photoset, edits, analysis, some history/fun facts about the opera(s), or just overall impressions. Can be as elaborate or simple as you like. Just let us know what you think!
-In order to try and organize your content–though we know Tumblr isn’t great with this–I thought we could tag our posts with #Operablr Women’s History Month.
Since each of us will be suggesting two operas, each of us will also be assigned two operas. This way, we each get a “back-up opera,” in case we’ve seen one of them already, or don’t want to watch one of them for whatever reason. Also, this gives people the opportunity to watch/post about more than one opera if they want.
I’m tagging people who interacted with the initial post who said they’d be interested:

babinicz @tatyana-dreaming @lizlensky
If I missed anyone, or if anyone wants to participate who isn’t on this list, let me know!
If you plan on participating, please send me your opera suggestions via DM or asks by the end of the day tomorrow, February 28th (since it’s the last day before WHM begins). (Also I know we’re not all in the same time zones so “end of the day” can just be around 8-ish wherever you are. I might not get back right away bc my bedtime is 11pm CST :p )
I will take everyone’s suggestions and put them in a random generator, and give you your assigned operas by the end of the day Monday, March 1st!
If anything on here needs clarifying, let me know :)
I’m very excited for this!
