Apparently 38% of Americans are planning on gathering in groups of more than 10 for Thanksgiving. I’m begging you, please do not do this. The results are going to be brutal. If you can’t convince your family to cancel, please just don’t go yourself. Or at least convince them to have the meal outside, or to make it smaller, or at very very least keep the windows open. This is real bad y’all
My former coworker posted a picture on his Instagram story of him and 19 family members, no social distancing, no masks, just 20 people crammed together. This guy is in school to be a nurse, and it makes me LIVID.
I got COVID in March, and I’m still dealing with the physical repercussions every. single. fucking. day. Right now I’m lying flat on my back but in the next five minutes I’ll have to roll on my side because I can’t breathe in this position. I’m dependent on an inhaler. I had to leave my job. Even small actions wear me out, and my physical stamina and strength is a fraction of what it was before I got sick.
And I’m relatively lucky—I was able to stay at home for the 6ish weeks I was severely ill, I’m alive, and I have no organ damage. But eight and a half months later I’m still very much only operating at a fraction of the level I was before I got sick.
I caught it before there were confirmed cases in my area (March 8th, so about a week before “social distancing” was even a thing, and I either got it while voting or at work), so the one thing I take comfort in is knowing that I didn’t get it because I was dumb or didn’t follow the rules; I just got insanely unlucky.
It’s not worth it. You don’t want to get this. STAY HOME. DON’T LET YOUR GUARD DOWN. DON’T TRUST THAT OTHERS WILL DO THE RIGHT THING. You can do everything right but ultimately our safety lies in the hands of others. Remember:
So stay home and don’t gamble on other people doing the right thing. It might just kill you.
Thank you for this. I think we really don’t talk enough about Long Covid. I’ve heard lots of accounts of it, both from friends and in articles. We need to stop framing it as if the possible outcomes are small chance of death vs large chance of having it and getting better. Rather, soooo many people have what you’re describing.
It’s believed the recent explosion of cases in November was due to Halloween gatherings! JUST SKYPE IT FFS
My dad used to work at an interactive history park in Indiana as an 1800’s reenactor and craftsman. Part of his job included apprenticing the blacksmith and creating iron nails. Park tourists would walk between different demonstrations of historical lifestyles and crafts, and he would speak to them as though he were a young blacksmith in 1820 and they were time-travelers.
Tourists often like to play smart, trying to catch reenactors up and get them to break character. It can get pretty obnoxious, but they’re trained to stay calm and indulgent. One day, my father was busy making iron nails and one woman scoffed and said, mockingly, “I’m pretty sure they didn’t have nails back then!”
My dad looked up at her. “Ma'am,” he said, “They didn’t screw Jesus to the cross.”
Apparently she reported him to the museum for being crass.
I knew a reenactor in front of whom it was said, “Don’t be silly, they didn’t have wood in the medieval era.”
In our society we’ve had:
“Is that real fire?”
“Is that real food”
“Do you have Wi-Fi?” Like…What? Everyone had to keep very straight faces on that one… and from the same family
“Do you sleep in them tents?” “Yes…that is sort of the function of a tent…?” (Or words to that effect) “oh my God I couldn’t do that, I’d die”
And then most people’s personal favourite - show season 2015, our heads of society have just had a baby and she was brought to the encampment. She was fast asleep in a closed pavilion tent (aka shorthand for no members of the public please, usually because there are inauthentic things hidden in them like sleeping bags etc) and apparently a member of the public walked into the tent, prodded the baby and then when one of our members came to see what the heck was going on, supposedly asked them “Is that a real baby…”
Needless to say, there was always someone on guard everything Alys napped after that…
I’ve had people walk into my private tent while I’m napping. They have to undo the canvas ties first, which you’d think would be a clue that they’re not supposed to be there. Sometimes they’ll touch you or your clothes or, if you have a weapon, try to take it from you.
Less intrusive but still awkward is when tourists will sit down for a meal with you, and you have to explain to them that you’re preparing and eating your own real food for your own real body and if they’re hungry they can go to one of the many food vendors down the road. I’m not sure whether I prefer it when they stare at you in silence or try to join in private conversations during your meal.
Sometimes they’ll stay after closing hours and then get scandalized that you switched into blue jeans and tennis shoes. Sorry dude, but there’s a reason why breeches and moccasins aren’t commonly worn as casual clothing in the 21st century.
Oh wow, okay like that’s really rude and not cool and of my knowledge i’ve never done this. Like, i respect people that reenact the past and stuff because that’s so cool, and you guys are so knowledgeable about stuff and i’m always really interested in the stuff your doing like if someone was a blacksmith and was making nails i would usually ask them how they do it and ask many questions. Is this okay? Like, am i being to intrusive as i don’t mean to be i’m just really exited and I’m genuinely curious. So yeh…
Oh no, you’re supposed to ask questions! It’s interactive history. But you’re also supposed to remember that they’re real people and if you have doubts about whether or not you’re allowed to enter a room/eat something/touch someone, just ask first.
The power of asking is incredible; I was at a ren faire once staring with rapt obsession at the blacksmith, and said, man, I wish I could do that and the next thing you know I’m getting a bigass apron and gloves put on me and I’m about to get baby’s first blacksmithing lesson. I didn’t even know they did that. But I bet u $10000 it would have gone down VERY DIFFERENTLY if I’d just grabbed a hammer. XDDD
Oooh, this reminds me of a medevial festival we attended with some friends and their kids. It took place in a 700 years old castle and every ½ hour a witch (”I am a very FRIENDLY witch!”) would give a little presentation of medevial medicine down in the dungeon.
So we - and some 50, 60 childrend and their moms and dads wait for the witch in a chilling cold, dark and very spooky cellar and my stupid ass husband creeps behind me and the girls and pokes us in the sides
and the girls scream in shock and jump
and 50 children shriek
and some start crying in an instant (they were nervous and scared before… waiting for a WITCH!!)
and the witch enters and nobody wants to know about fecking botanical medicine anymore but asked: “Did they really torture witches here?”
“Did they die?”
“Oh dear, let me tell you about lavender instead!”
“Is this place haunted?”
This poor woman got so mad that we ruined her show completely that in the afternoon she shouted “Oh, it’s you!” when we passed her tent and pointed to my husband with this wicked sharp finger and he (a 6ft 3 bear of a man) sight and sunk to his knees and “passed out” for a moment…
And you could hear a child’s whisper in the crowd “She killed him!”
And the local priest stood there cheering and applauding about evil spirits and this is how we more or less killed the faith of Christianity in a small Styrian village.
@ruthless-rage literally me 😭
He wants to work but doesn’t want to ruin the music! This is quite nice.
This is like a PDQ Bach album- Marches for outdoor band and improvisational construction equipment.
There are people that would call this man an “unskilled labourer”, as if such a thing ever existed.
Nope. This is probably Germany though it might also be Austria. Construction is a proper trade with a formalised education in both countries; you need to go to trade school for three years while also apprenticing to a company (I think this is also true for Austria? If I’m wrong, Ösiblr, please correct me). At the end of this you get a certificate, your Facharbeiterbrief. And “Facharbeiter” and “unskilled” are mutually exclusive. So, no. Nobody would ever call him that.
Ösiblr here, very much so. He obviously is a Handwerker, a skilled worker. And do not get over excited by his ability to foresee the rhythm - all the um-papa music has only two basic rhythms: March param-param-par-umpapa/dum-didel-didel-umpapa or walz. In 1000 variations.
Centaur for disease control.
Specializing in herd immunity.
[Image: Painting of Chiron, a centaur, holding a bow and having just loosed an arrow. Caption reads, “In Greek mythology, Chiron was not only half man and half horse, he was also a doctor of medicine. That made him the Centaur For Disease Control.”]
Inventor of homegrown penicilin.
It’s so funny how James Cameron gets so mad when you bring up that Jack and Rose both could’ve fit on the door
lmao does he actually get mad about that?
When James Cameron did his European premier press conference for “Avatar” he was asked by a German journalist: “Spending all this money and shit, couldn’t you possibly think of a new story to tell?”
And his reply: “What the fuck you mean?”
Yes. He gets mad. Quite mad when you judge him.
I needed this drag. Let’s change guys and not look back
working out your brain is a must!!
• hydrate it by drinking lots of water
• eat dark chocolate and blueberries and walnuts and salmon and other foods high in antioxidants!!
• play little brain games on your phone; I like wordconenct! anything that makes you think!
• read books. It’s simple but necessary. Even better - join a book club, or read with a friend, so you can have discussions after. This will improve your reading comprehension.
• do puzzles - it doesnt have to be sudoku, I love playing Beat Saber on the Oculus Rift because it makes my brain have to match colorful patterns to physical movements very quickly!
• learn a new dance - even a tik tok trendy dance. Learning new dance moves are proven to strengthen synapses!!
• go bird watching, or foraging, or anything outdoors that requires you to explore pattern recognition and visual searching
• watch a movie with the intent of analysis - this is best done with a cinephile friend!! talk about tropes and symbolism and character growth
• cross stitch, or sew, or do anything that requires matching nimble hand movements to patterns
• play or learn an instrument!
• develop a consistent sleep schedule (or as close to consistent as you can get!)
• when eating, try to identify the ingredients and flavors you’re perceiving!
I hope this helps :)
Milwaukee Freedom Fund is offering support to protestors in Kenosha - here is a google doc link to their support request. If you intend to protest or demonstrate in the coming days, stay safe and stay prepared.
Liverpool is one of the most diverse cities in the country, yet the majority of its secondary schools are faith schools.
This divides communities not only by religion or belief – but by ethnic background and economic status too. We’re campaigning with Liverpool Humanists to end this inequality. https://ift.tt/3iTuaC0
May I add: “I will not do that because I respect you and your religion.”?
Honestly as a blind person I’m so tired of seeing fictional blind characters who don’t use white canes or other guides. “They have special powers so they know what’s around them” or “they’re confident enough to not need a guide” are common tropes, and I’m tired.
Are people scared that using a white cane will make their blind character seem weak? They can’t use a cane because they’re so special that they already know what’s around them, and other blind people who use guides are inferior because they’re not special?
I’m tired. Give your blind characters white canes and other guides. Let them hold onto their friends, let them have guide dogs. Don’t make white cane users feel ostracized for not being “strong enough” to go without.
Another thing that pisses me off is when a sighted character comes up with the fantasy equivalent of braille and teaches it to the blind character. Braille was invented by Louis Braille, a blind man, in 1824. The blind character should be the one coming up with it.
Tldr I’m blind and tired of sighted people lol
🔪 Sighted People MUST Reblog This 🔪

This is almost fifty years ago: I added psych as a major so I could access the books on homosexuality in our university library. They were locked in the back and you had to go through the librarian to get them. If you were not a psych major the Dean of Students would interrogate you as to why you wanted to read such deleterious material.
Seeing the newspaper that one of my professors and his friends had been arrested at his own house, having a barbecue in the backyard, for “associating with a known homosexual”. Believe me, these things twist you, and make you think twice when invited to a party at someone’s house.
Having a handsome young stranger make eyes at you at the all night diner as you study for finals, and wondering if he is one of the detectives assigned to entrapping gays. Going through the teeter totter emotions of wondering if he might be the love you are looking for, or is he the trap that will flush your whole life down the toilet.
Coming to barracks at the end of the day in the Air Force, and watching the swarm of OSI and Security Police escorting a friend out under arrest for having gone to a gay bar. Wondering if he would name you, because that was the only way you could stay out of jail – by naming at least five other gays.
All of the above were common experiences for many gays in America, not that long ago. Those of us who went through this are still among you. Don’t take for granted the new freedoms you have. Get out and vote this election no matter what. The Republicans mean to send us back to all this.]
This shit just fucking breaks my heart.
When old white farts at Trump rallies say “This country used to be great! I want to go back to the way things were!” this is the kind of shit they’re reminiscing about.
Rutger Bregman is the Dutch historian who became a global sensation after an appearance at this year’s Davos summit, where he accused attending billionaires of ignoring taxation. Now he has created another viral moment in an extremely uncomfortable interview with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson.
Bregman so riled Carson with his accusations of hypocrisy, critiques of Fox’s conservative agenda, and attacks on Donald Trump that the TV host called him a “moron” and angrily told him: “Go fuck yourself.”
Lot more people around the world are going to watch this now than if it actually aired. Speaking truth to power is the best viral content!
Always re-post this.
This didn’t air so I reblogged to make sure people got to see it anyway.
C-3PO makes me laugh because you have to remember he was assembled by a child out of things from a scrap heap. Everything about him makes sense if you bear that in mind. Anakin wanted a droid who could help his mother, but the only AI package he could find was one somebody threw out for being too fussy. The combination of tweaking to give him a worried/caring personality makes him constantly anxious. A protocol droid comes with a fair amount of language packages, but why stop there? Somebody threw out like, three different galactic language dictionaries because they weren’t the recent edition. Just load ‘em all up. all of them, even the packs that contain things like ewok and a thousand variants of different manufacturers’ droid codecs. don’t add half the other requirements most legal protocol droids have included at the factory like emergency wipe protocols or shutdown failsafes, or programmed obsolescence. Build that sucker out of non-commercial materials that are already over a hundred years old and still good, tweak it to withstand tatooine of all places.
so now you have this droid that is over thirty years old and it could never be obsolete because it was never manufactured by anybody but a kid on a sand ball somewhere, it’s never running down because it was built to last on tatooine and there’s nothing programmed in to try and urge you to buy the latest model because there is no latest model. 3P0 is simultaneously totally useless yet hyper functional because he was not made according to any specs except “the best most toughest things possible to help my mom for a long long time on a hot desert planet”
Invincible multilingual anxiety bot here to wreck your capitalist droid ideals
Anybody ever considered that Jabba - after Bib Fortuna introduces C2PO as the new protocoll man - shouts furiously: “Oh, that piece of shit again!”
Hi all, my name is Tola and as part of a university module I have had to create a survey to collect some data for a research paper I am working on. The questionnaire is based on adhd, creativity and performance so if you have adhd and would like to help a fellow adhd brain out please click the link and fill it out ( I promise it’s not too long) thank you in advance x x x
If you guys can, can you please help her out !
Friendly reminder that I am still raising funds for the Black Lives Matter movement until the end of this month! Find the prints here: inprnt.com/gallery/loish
Profits will be split across four organizations: Equal Justice Initiative, The Okra Project, Black Voters Matter Fund, and the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective. We’ve managed to raise over $5600 so far, let’s keep it going! Thanks for all of your support so far ❤️
Detroit. Where the Columbus statue used to be.
Image description: An indigenous woman in yellow, purple, blue, and tan fancy shawl regalia stands atop a tall empty pedestal that previously held a statue of Christopher Columbus in Detroit, Michigan, USA. She has her arms spread wide to hold out her shawl and a resolute expression on her face. She is looking upward and forward. Three indigenous women stand at the base of the statue wearing jingle dresses and holding feather fans as they stare at the camera with confidence and pride. It is a sunny, beautiful day. P.S. Image quality is way better on twitter, the photographer is going to make prints!
