Hello! A lot of you have been asking me where and how I’ve learn multiple languages and well, after a few hours of digging through my browser history and bookmarks, I was able to collect all of these resources. I have personally used all of these, so I can assure you they are useful! If there is something wrong with a website or a link, please let me know. Also, if you have any questions or if you want a learning buddy, my ask box is open. (I speak English and Spanish. I’m learning Korean, German, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, and Esperanto)
Note: Learning a new language requires a lot of dedication, more than you actually think! Especially if you’re learning multiple languages at the same time. It isn’t impossible, but it will take time. And by time I mean months and/or years! So please, be patient. Take your time. Don’t rush. Keep in mind that you will mess up and that’s okay. Practice as much as you can. Practice out loud. Talk to yourself if you can. It doesn’t matter if people think you’re crazy. They won’t be thinking the same when you become a polyglot, so don’t mind them. This is for you and your future.

The first draft of Fabrin, a race of amorphous fabric-shelled creatures. The artwork of the fabrin, itself, was made by me (you can also see it over on dungeons-and-dryads. It was an NPC for my campaign).
The curtain artwork is by EveyD.

If you’d like to see more 5e homebrew, consider supporting me on ko-fi!

Update: I’m going to go ahead and rule that Fabrin only have sunlight sensitivity when they have no shell. Otherwise, it feel like it’s a bit harsh.

Humblewood Campaign Setting for 5e DND

    rpgsandbox :

    Welcome to Humblewood!

Humblewood is an exciting new Campaign Setting for 5e DND that includes original birdfolk player races, new monsters, magic items, and a compelling adventure for 1st to 5th level characters.

    The World

In the world of Everden, nestled between the mighty Crest mountain range and the vast marshes of the Mokk Fields, lies a mystical forest known as Humblewood that hums with the Great Rhythm of nature. It has been ruled for generations by the birdfolk who inhabit the Great Tree-City of Alderheart. Humblewood has endured for centuries thanks to the industry and compassion of its people…

…but now the fires have come, and the Woods have been thrown into chaos. Flames ravage the land and destroy the homes of the humblefolk, stoking a growing resentment against the birdfolk, whose cities have managed to avoid the worst of the fires so far. Hatred burns in the hearts of those who have lost lives they cherished, and these once peaceful peoples now take up the sword and turn to banditry. The disaffected turn their gaze on Alderheart, and threaten to reduce an age of peace to ashes…

…yet there is still hope. Even in these dark times, brave heroes can be found within the Wood. Only they can quell the raging flames that have been unleashed upon the land, and restore balance to the realm. Will you answer the call?

    Residents of Humblewood
    The Birdfolk

The birdfolk races have ruled over Humblewood from their canopy villages and fortified cities for as long as anyone can remember. Play as one of the five core birdfolk races:

    • The astute crow-like Corvum who safeguard Humblewood’s knowledge
    • The dignified fowl-like Gallus who have faith in the power of community
    • The aloof pidgeon-like Lumas who use their gifts to bring joy into the world
    • The agile hawk-like Raptors who blaze new trails through the forest
    • The powerful owl-like Strig who defend what they believe is right

    The Humblefolk

The humblefolk live in small villages throughout the Wood, but are occasionally found in birdfolk cities. Play as one of the five core humblefolk races:

    • The hearty deer-like Cerva who strive to achieve their goals
    • The sensitive hedgehog-like Hedges whose empathy lets them see what others cannot
    • The brave mouse-like Jerbeen who inspire those around them with deeds of heroism
    • The resourceful raccoon-like Mapach who can craft a solution to any problem
    • The cunning fox-like Vulpin who are always one step ahead of their foes

    The Bandits

Once a loosely organized confederacy of crime, its ranks have swelled with humblefolk displaced by the spreading fires who have turned to banditry to survive. Under the guidance of a new leader, they seek to exact retribution upon the birdfolk cities and sow discord throughout the Wood.

    Monsters of Humblewood
    The Oozes

Deep within the murk of the Mokk Fields live several species of this most resilient life-form. Battle your way through caustic slimes whose touch is a deadly acid, sticky slimes that can suck a weapon right out of your hand, and the rare shifting slimes which feed on magical energies to become ever stronger.

    The Beasts

Humblewood is home to a variety of beasts whose size, strength, and abilities can only have grown thanks to the Wood’s magic. Face craggy skinned mountain lions whose roar can summon rockslides, hunt the deadly forest prowlers in their woodland lair, and tangle with the giant sea monster (art coming soon!) in a battle on the high sea!

    The Elements of Flame

The great calamity which produced the part of Humblewood known as the Scorched Grove also made the area an ideal home for fiery creatures. Withstand the searing heat of an emberbat swarm: a vortex of tiny flying creatures, each one a smouldering ember with wings! Confront the terrifying ashsnake and it’s deadly pyroclastic breath! Legends say there may even be a primal elemental force lurking within the Scorched Grove. Have you the courage to find out?

Our latest playtest v0.4 contains the first chapters of a full-length campaign, and the tools you’ll need to get started playing as birdfolk characters in this setting.

    Stealing Word (3rd level spell)

As a Bonus Action you may cast this spell upon a creature that you can see within 30ft of you. You reach out toward a creature and a shadowy ethereal hand appears and touches them. They must make a Constitution Saving Throw against your Spell Save DC. If they succeed the hand falters and dissipates, rendering the spell lost. If they fail then they take 2d4 necrotic damage and you gain that same amount in health points. (Creatures may choose to fail the save.)

At Higher Levels. You may target one additional creature per spel slot level above 3rd.

    Good stuff.

This. This is good fiction writing advice. I really appreciate how it was formatted as “this is a common problem, here is a solution to try in your own work” and not “oh god, don’t do that!” without any extra help. And I extra appreciated the “don’t rely on adverbs” bit, because they do have their place but they aren’t the only way actions can be emphasized.

Bless Stephi because overuse of tags literally boils my soul!

Basalt Writes a Campaign Book: You Vote on the Setting!

Note: This is no guarantee! It’s mostly an interest check! I will try my best to make and release the campaign book, but life happens and a campaign book is a lot of work. It’ll take a while, but I’ll send out updates!

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you’ll know that I occasionally talk about my homebrew worlds- or make content specific to them! The main worlds I work with are Cantus, Ironcreek, Spectrum, and Torrid.

You’ll be voting on one of these four worlds!

CANTUS is primarily set in a desert empire with secrets that lie beneath its catacombs. Despite this, the world is fairly open and there are possibilities to be found, everywhere. Threats include corruption, powerful artifacts, and ancient gods. It includes its own homebrew pantheon, calendar, and holidays. It’s the most varied of the four choices.

IRONCREEK is primarily set in a temperate woodland town rife with monster activity. Disappearances are a common fact of life, and monster hunters are a must to keep the town safe. Battle feral lycanthropes, restless undead, and bewitching fey in this setting. It’s the best for mystery, horror, and hack-n-slash monster fights, of the four choices.

SPECTRUM is a vast, open world with its own planes. It has no gods, and is focused on a series of abstract elements that correspond to the colors of the rainbow. A habitable zone lies at the center of the world, surrounded on all sides by elemental extremes controlled by mythic titans. It’s the most “different” from a traditional setting, of the four choices.

TORRID is an open world with impossibly towering mountains, some verging on impassible. Travel is primarily by airship, and civilizations are among the valleys. There are no gods, but there is a force of nature known as the “Winged Light” that bestows power onto heroes known as “Torches,” that become spirits when they pass on. It’s the most like a “traditional” setting (though it has some notable twists), of the four choices.

    VOTE HERE

And feel free to ask questions about the settings if you want, and I’ll try to get to them!

Edit: Polling will close in a couple days!

Polling will close on Saturday at noon! (Central Standard Time)

The results, so far. There’s still time to vote before Saturday at noon!

Sooo, does anyone else think familiars are a little lackluster in 5e? Cause I know I certainly think that.
One of the few things that 4e did right was familiars. Your choice of familiar felt important and getting access to a new familiar was exciting and could be cooler than getting a new magic item in a lot of cases. Thats, uh, not so much true in 5e. This is a rough idea of a system I want to try out to make having a familiar more special and to make it a more enticing option for spell casters and, imagine this, possibly making a scroll of find familiar a really special magic item to find as loot. Still needs to get balanced and the options need to be filled out a bit more, but this is a proof of concept. “You get the idea.”, right?
As always, questions and comments are welcome. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

@vallonde-laid-bare Are you creeping in My Discord? Cause I swear, every time we get into a discussion about a possible supplement like this, you beat me to the punch on publishing one. Good Job!Though personally, I also feel like familiars should gain a bonus to intel equal to their owner’s Spellcasting mod.

INFERNO PETE & THE ARDENT ARCANE FORGE — so this has been a project i’ve wanted to do for a long time that literally came to me in a dream (original post here), and I’ve always fancied the idea of a custom weapons forge and well, this was my excuse to do it. just a little note: i’m really bad at pricing things! feel free to change up how you price things if you’re planning on using this in your games!
the incredible art was done by @the-nothing-maker / link to the piece itself here.
feedback is always welcome and if you enjoy my ko-fi is here.

    lemonguy :

Look at my hands I said, as the blood drips from my knuckles and my fingers are adorned in a red dress, in a red veil of dancing silhouettes and lonely sighs.

Look at my hands I said, as I clench my fists in pain, as I sing a tune only you know, as your head echoes with the sound, as your blue eyes stare at the pavement, in a grey veil of confusion.

Look at my hands I yelled, as I hold you in my arms, as the red colours your pale white skin, as it flows down towards your elbows like the Amazon river, in a blue veil your eyes hold as they suddenly shoot towards me in shock.

I’m not drunk enough to say this, as I reach with my hand towards the cup you hold in your hands, as I sip on the red wine like the blood dripping from my palms, as I hold you with my left hand that beats like heartbeat forever in loop, in a rhythmical veil of 65-80 echoes in a full minute.

Look at my hands I whisper, as I kiss your neck with the sour taste of wine on my lips, as you giggle and smile, as it runs down to my heart and makes the beats even stronger and louder, as the veil of passion encircles us both.

I’m sorry, I whisper. I love you, I murmur. I will never hate you, I sigh. I will always remember you, I promise.

The world sighs as the Earth revolves, the sun sheds its light and embraces it, yet it sighs even louder, making the waves dance, making them swirl and twirl as the lonely surfer falls from his board, as the careless girl sunbathing giggles at him, as the starved kid dies from its disease, as the only lover the child has ever known, his mother cries, as the leaves fall from the tree and rain drips on the pavement, the sky weeps. The Earth sighs, as the sun embraces us, and we ascend to the skies.

    We wander.
    But we’ll be found.

The Deck of Certain Things, or: The Joke Item That Almost Destroyed my Campaign

    animatedamerican :

    we-are-rogue :

    [by u/astonishingantman / reddit]

“I created this thing over two years ago as a joke item. One of my players became convinced that I was trying to trick them, and that it was a real Deck of Many Things. His paranoia spread, and the party nearly killed each other over it. After some impromptu group therapy, they decided to leave the Deck be and never speak of it again.

So now you get to use it. Have fun!”

    Deck of Certain Things

    Wondrous Item, Legendary

A set of 10 cards that come in a small box. “Deck of Certain Things” has been crudely carved into the box’s lid in Common.

Before you draw a card, you must declare how many cards you intend to draw and then draw them randomly (you can use a d10 to simulate the deck). Any cards drawn in excess of this number have no effect. Otherwise, as soon as you draw a card from the deck, its magic takes effect. Each card must be drawn no more than 1 hour after the previous draw. If you fail to draw the chosen number, the remaining cards fly from the deck and take effect all at once. Once a card is drawn it cannot reappear.

Once all 10 cards have been drawn, a pair of Gloves of Thievery appear in the deck box, along with a note thanking the Deck’s owner for the fun.

The cards are decorated with shoddy-looking artwork, seemingly scribbled with crayon. They are:

    1. Acorn: 3d8 terrified squirrels are transported to your location from elsewhere on the material plane.
    2. Fireworks: Your weapon explodes into a shower of brightly-colored glitter. It reforms in 1 hour.
    3. Prospector: A wooden chest containing 10,000 pieces of counterfeit gold drops at your feet. The coins show a winking jester on both sides.
    4. Liar: For the next 1d12 hours, telling a lie causes your trousers to ignite, dealing 1d6 points of fire damage.
    5. Honey Jar: Summons a friendly sentient bear named Sigmund, who acts as an apothecary, selling the party potions from his backpack. He vanishes after 1d20 minutes.
    6. Wallflower: You instantly succeed on all Insight checks for 24 hours, but fail all Intimidation checks.
    7. Invitation: An imp appears in a burst of smoke, kicks you in the shins, then vanishes.
    8. Nightmare: All items worn on your person, with the exception of undergarments, turn invisible for 1d4 hours.
    9. Quill: A flameskull appears in front of you, delivers a heartfelt soliloquy, then explodes in a pillar of green flame. All creatures within 5 feet must make a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d10 fire damage.
    10. Infant: For the next hour your voice is replaced with the shrill cries of a baby. You are unable to communicate through speech or cast spells with a verbal component.

okay I sORT OF LOVE THIS
