Yo, this might be a joke but speaking to you as a social worker who has worked in housing and homelessness services and food banks?

    ALWAYS CHOOSE YOUR RENT.

Food pantries are a punch in the nuts to your pride but they require WAY less hoops to jump through to get than the financial side of housing assistance. Also, there is often going to be MORE RESOURCES AVAILABLE for you when it comes to food assistance of MULTIPLE TYPES (food stamps/ebt, places that double said EBT, food pantries, places that just give away free food like soup kitchens, places that give away their leftovers from the day before etc) rather than housing assistance which are neither numerous nor are people likely to apply for.

I personally have used food pantries. I may have to use them again. They are their to help you for that reason, okay? Please fucking choose to pay your rent until we can abolish landlords and live on mutual aid.

Stay housed. Do you hear me, if this choice happens, seek mutual aid or charity for food and STAY HOUSED. Statistically, it is better to hit to your pride, go ask for food assistance, and sleep in your bed and eat that food in your home because coming back from losing said home is going to be so much harder that recovering from food insecurity is.

ITS FUCKED UP THAT WE HAVE TO CHOOSE BUT PLEASE TRUST ME ON THIS ONE OK? JUST TRUST ME.

Making friends with people from other countries is so crazy. I sent my group chat a Big Bird gif.

And this one girl says, “why isn’t he blue?”

I’m like, the fuck you mean??

So today I learned that in the Dutch version of Sesame Street, they do, in fact, have a blue Big Bird.

I was baffled by this so I went on Muppets Wiki and guess what.

In Mexico, Big Bird is green and his name is Abelardo.

Turkish Big Bird (aka Minik Kus) is apparently fucking orange.

This looks like a fuckin alternate universe or smth. I can’t.

remember, this is for a DOOR lock.

remember that when picking a DOOR lock, you have to apply a little bit of pressure to your tension wrench (the thing that you use to turn the knob). too little or too much and you wont be able to pick the door open. you can use anything for the tension wrench. a bobby pin. bits of wire. a paper clip. etc.
its best to be completely silent when youre picking locks bc theres this small ‘click’ when youre picking that you might miss if youre using headphones or listening to music.
.
if youre picking one of these
you jam something thin and long above one of the rotation dials and you push up on the shackle.
. if its one of these
you get yourself some shims. (or make one. you can make shims out of fucking soda cans), you wiggle them in the tiny space between the shackle and the body of the lock, and you pop these suckers open.
. for a chain deadbolt,
you get something flexible but sturdy and you just push this fucker down
. for one of these rotating combination locks
you can also shim this motherfucker open. jam your shims between the shackle and the body and pry it unlocked. if, for some reason, you dont wanna shim it open, maybe you dont have a shim or you just like a challenge, this bitch can be decoded ridiculously easy. heres what you do:
spin this bitch to the right about two or three times to “reset” it. then you pull up on the shackle a bit, and turn it right slowly until you hear a click. your number is two spaces further. then you turn left 360 degrees until you land on the right number again, and start turning this motherfucker left until it stops. when it stops, turn right. if its loose, its the wrong number, keep going left. if its not loose, you have the right number, and you turn right all the way until this bitch pops
.
now you know how to pick several common locks!!!!! congratulations!!!!

Wait I have a question, if the pins are all the same size then why can’t you just jam anything in the lock and push up
this can cause some pins to be stuck above the point they need to be at. possibly other reasons, but this is the one I know of

through the years realized that through whatever blind groping the ‘90s-ass “edgelords” were desperately trying to save us from this, through proper gatekeeping and filtering

and at first I’d thought it was gratuitous and supported it being relaxed, maybe not shaming everyone who publicly mourned a suicide, mea culpa, mea culpa, I have debts to pay

    >@siliquasquama said: wait, what are we being saved from? The public mourning of the suicides of famous people?

    exactly

    >@tsukutsukuboshi said: seconding the question of what’s been so bad about the public reaction

    >@russian-hackers-official said: yea what’s so bad about that

That was how we kept the internet culture from growing mawkish and cry-bullyish: basically, if you were so weak as to get weepy over corpsemeat you got cancelled, the shame would follow you forever and you’d never be allowed to forget it.

Like, you know how from now unto eternity, whenever Tim Buckley gets mentioned someone’s gonna heap shit on him for getting melodramatic and heavy about a character having a miscarriage? That but real. At the time I thought it was too much but ::gestures around::

One of the critical moments I remember most was when Gawker was young, still focused on Manhattan celebrity gossip and young-people-in-publishing industry news, and to comment on it you had to pass an “audition” and if your comments fell below par you’d be ceremoniously removed in Friday “Commenter Execution” posts

And there was some post about a toddler falling out of a high-rise Manhattan apartment window and dying, and some commenter referenced the classic Anal Cunt song “Your Kid Committed Suicide Because You Suck” (about Eric Clapton’s kid, who died the same way, inspiring “Tears in Heaven”) and some scold huffed that he should show some restraint because A Child Has Died, and then that scold was not featured in that week’s Commenter Executions and I was like “hmm, this is an ill omen”, and it was

In the end it kind of feels like a trade in cultures without an actual change in quality; peak Dead Baby Joke culture was just as bad as this, just in different ways I guess, where instead of cry-bullying you had regular bullying, and being a smug disaffected asshole who was contemptuous of others for having emotions was the most prized social position, which led to a huge proliferation of mean-spirited jokesters who could dish it out but not take it but by good fortune rarely needed to take it, and that then led into the whole “freakshow rubbernecking” culture that now mainly survives in kiwifarms but was a whole thing back then.

I mean, it seems fair to say that it ended because it got so bad that people got burnt out on it, in the same way that this thing is now ending for the same reason? Which fits nicely into my general theory of society as the sum of a bunch of concurrent pendulum-swings where things are only ever good in the dizzy moments of transition when the corrupt old order is being torn down but the new order hasn’t had time to Go Too Far yet.

(Anyway, this is the reason Twitter and Something Awful are the worst parts of the Internet: somehow they manage to hit both the extremes at the same time.)

the trade-off is that the edgelords forget that hatred is also an emotion, and that’s how ‘internet is serious business’ manifested into legitimate fascism on 4chan et al. while the ‘hardest’ of the channers ridiculed that hatred (because they were ‘weak’ enough to get riled up about anything at all) it still crossed the threshold between the internet and real life, albeit in the other direction; instead of mourning irl tragedy online, the internet sought to manifest tragedy irl. hence the aforementioned pendulum swing, i suppose.

twitter especially has feet in both worlds: their online presence is validated by their irl presence (blue checkmarks) and tweets are becoming legitimate sources of correspondence that even have their own MLA citation. so while twitter is more of a symptom than a cause, it definitely reflects the sort of inevitable blending of the virtual and tangible worlds as the internet has become more ubiquitous.

and i think we as society are still not fully grappling with that either. we accept that our money is data in a computer yet real, but somehow online interactions and friendships and the impact of social media is still downplayed or inherently demonized as nothing more than a distraction rather than the very real place, esp under lockdown, that the new generation is developing their identities and social circles.

an ‘ill omen’ that the internet was no longer a place to visit, but an omnipresent current flowing beneath all of the innerworkings of our society. the sewer of cultural transmission…

I think the reason people still think the Internet Isn’t Real is that it’s still a place you can *leave*, in a way that you cannot do IRL. I can poof my internet identity and all the toxic followers I’ve amassed, all the track record of bans and suspensions and blocks, all of that goes away and it’s Morning in America. (You can do something similar IRL but it only works once and you don’t get to come back afterward.)

Uuuuuh, didn’t it used to be possible to do that IRL repeatedly? I remember reading people like Heinlein who were unhappy about that changing. It’s about frontier, and the closing of frontier, I think. And the “wild west days of the internet” are ending too.

I still tend to think that what happened is that dumb-ass politics on the internet changed from stereotypically male to stereotypically female.

You used to use open aggression and the ability to deride people for not knowing factual trivia to be a shit to people online, and slowly the dominant methodology switched to passive-agression and deriding people for insufficient social acumen.

The first person I ever heard say some variant of, “Well, of course I had a thirteen year old edgelord phase, we all did” was Zoe Quinn and I’d be lying if I said that hadn’t influenced my opinion on this kind of thing.

Actually also reading a lot of Something Awful growing up and seeing how much drama came out of there, and especially how often the people who really liked to mock furries or whatever would turn out to have even weirder fetishes, or how often the people mocking internet drama turned out to have insane private lives.

Also watching internet meme cynicism metastasize into, like, sincere alt-right/alt-light/trumpist/whatever meme ideology.

Like, I had the same awakening with the edgelords as I did with ultra-woke types, which is that a ton of it is social climbing and deflection, that the aggressive attempts to enforce ideology don’t necessarily come from extreme adherence to the ideology, but are attempts to pre-emptively deflect attention from your own failure to actually live the lifestyle you’re gatekeeping.

Like, if I flame the furries into oblivion hopefully nobody will discover that I’m really into scat porn.

    Fuck that.

'We all just got played': Some QAnon followers lose hope as dreams of a bloody Inauguration coup fail to materialize

Some are snapping out of it, others are being targeted by Neo-Nazis because they’re left feeling betrayed. So, heads up. One cult goes down, there’s always another cult ready to scoop them up and say, “You were wronged! I can give you new purpose.”

Choosing between a sympathetic group and a derisive one is no choice at all.

You see somebody wavering, you give them a line of escape, not mockery.

A sneak peak of my newest build, including the brand new glow lichen from snapshot 21w03a. I think it’s a fantastic addition, both in term of gameplay and also biologically unique. Lichens are composed of symbiotic relationships between fungi and algae, which I find very fascinating. I’m very happy to see it feature in the 1.17 update. Also here’s lichen on a log, which would be a common place to find it in real life

There’s a tweet floating around in which someone expresses surprise that one of the white male Capitol rioters has a black wife.  I can’t speak as to the history of the specific man in question, but…

By and large the MAGAs have not claimed to be “white supremacist.”  That’s been mostly a label applied from the outside.  They don’t actually have an obligation to follow it just because CNN or whoever said they were.

From the inside, the typical MAGA actually has no special ideological reason not to marry someone black.

The typical MAGA is not the “camp Auschwitz” guy.

On the other hand, approximately zero typical MAGAs at the insurrection took a look at “camp Auschwitz” guy and his equivalents and said, “you know what, we’re not with them.”

So the confusion about their beliefs is not quite as dumb as you are portraying it.

I mean, there have been some occasional pushback on it, maybe some people saw that guy, said, “Fuck this” and went home.

But also a crowd angry enough to beat a man to death looked at open Nazi propaganda and said, “Yeah, no problem with this, why wouldn’t he be here.”

This is, legit though, why people make fun of “How can I be racist if I’m in an interracial marriage?”

Like, again, there’s that photo of a guy wearing a shirt that says “Camp Auschwitz” and wandering around in a group of people angry enough to breach the capitol and start a lethal riot.

Like you can apparently simultaneously marry a black woman AND go, “Well, any protest’s going to have a few open Nazis in it, nothing wrong with that.”

    cryptid-sighting :

    cryptid-sighting :

    cryptid-sighting :

Honestly, after the last four years of lunatical bullshit, it’s really, really hard to look back and understand just how improbable bordering on surreal the idea of “President-Elect Joe Biden” is

    image

Again, to really get this you have to put yourself in a pre-Obama administration frame of reference, which is hard enough for those of us who were politically involved during the first decade of this century much less for people who’s entire political memory begins in a world where we always already had a black president and Joe Biden was his VP.

If you can make that leap backwards, you’ll reach a place where Joe Biden was the goofball who’s 1988 presidential campaign crashed and burned because he couldn’t stop plagiarizing speeches. His second run, in 2008, didn’t go much better. It was widely seen as a joke, especially given his role in the Iraq War which had reached radioactive levels of unpopularity by the start of the 2008 election cycle (the fact Obama was elected president in 2008 was in no small part due to his consistent opposition to the war compared to his chief rivals in the primary and general).

There’s an old joke that every Senator looks in the mirror and sees a president-in-waiting, and Joe Biden was the platonic ideal of that idea; a drip who looked like someone had ordered a day player out of central casting for a bit role as a senator with no more than five lines. He represented a state in the senate that barely had more residents than the average congressional district, and in which getting elected to state wide office depended on cozying up to Delware’s real electorate: the financial services industry. Biden’s close ties to banks and credit card companies were so infamous and so odious that progressive website Daily Kos used to taunt him by putting “D-Mastercard” in parentheses after his name.

The idea of Biden, before becoming Obama’s running mate, ever getting “President-Elect” in front of his name was the punchline to an SNL sketch. If you told someone in 2007 that you’re from November 2020 and Joe Biden was just elected president, their response might well be “Oh yeah? And who was president before that? Donald Trump?” That’s how fucking outlandish the idea of Joe Biden ever getting elected president would have been.

It really is hard to remember a time when politics was somewhat normal and plagiary constituted a campaign scuttling scandal after four brain melting years of Trump (not to mention 8 years of Obama which is when the political class really figured out they can do whatever without consequences), but once you remember all that, the fact Joe Biden is going to be sworn in as the 46th president of the united states is extremely fucking weird.

Bringing this back in time for Inauguration Day

But also a crowd angry enough to beat a man to death looked at open Nazi propaganda and said, “Yeah, no problem with this, why wouldn’t he be here.”

one of the arguments against how much people use the concept of “culturally Christian atheist” is that something that is both an actual legitimate example of the concept and also shows the limitations of the concept is how people would react to religious homophobia by saying “Oh yeah well Leviticus also says don’t eat shrimp!”

Like 1) that is an utterly meaningless thing to say when it comes to any non-Christian religious homophobe. The “cultural Christianity” shows itself by virtue of the narrow horizons the speaker conceives with regards to religion. However this is pretty easy to repair through further understanding, so it’s not this immutable in hangs me fact either, it’s a bias and biases can be addressed and in this instance it would be having an understanding that religious homophobia is not limited to Christianity.

    2) Anyone at all versed in Christian theology can quite easily bring up the reasons why most Christians don’t practice dietary laws by pointing to Acts 10: 11-15 like it’s a very easy thing to answer. I mention this bc the conceit otherwise is that the “culturally Christian” atheist is so overwhelmingly steeped in a Christian worldview they are unable to break free of it to understand other religions (or if they did they would not criticize religion) but it’s not uncommon for there to be atheists who are not only raised in a Christian culture but also don’t know much about the basic theology (not that they need to tbqh) which makes it a bit awkward to say Christianity is just entirely totalizing of their world view

    @poorpoorpitifulme

the issue is that the argument only works if the Christian speaker is themselves ignorant of Christian theology. Which certainly isn’t rare, but virtually all Christian denominations (with small exceptions such as Seventh Day Adventists) interpret Acts 10 as explicitly revoking specifically the rules on which animals may be eaten. Acts 10: 11-15 shows Peter receiving a vision of a cloth covered with all the animals of the world and being told to eat by a voice and after refusing because it contains unclean animals sj has reptiles is told by the voice to consider no animal made by God to be unclean. So a Christian that has any amount of religious study under their belt has a very quick reply to this.

Additionally it overlooks the condemnations of homosexuality in the New Testament such as Romans 1:26-27. There is an implicit belief of a strong and general moral superiority of the New Testament which is an aspect of a Christian bias and the assumption that Biblical condemnation of homosexuality is limited to Leviticus

Look, Jesus was very clear on this: Every single one of the old testament laws still apply 100%, except for the ones that don’t.

It’s a wonder there’s been any confusion at all.
