Now into the real questions. Tell us about your fic!
Okay, so I wrote you’re human tonight on Ao3, which is a multi-chapter fic of twenty-two vignettes from the povs of each Dream SMP member (prior to November 16th) and Dream, who’s secretly a minor god, but also objectively terrible at keeping this a secret. The first half of the fic are lighthearted and mostly-independent drabbles, but the latter half is a buildup to the canon events of October sixteenth, festival night.
how Dream’s godhood and his friends’ empathy changes the events of the festival night you’d have to read to find out ;)
What was the inspiration behind you’re human tonight?
I wrote a smaller and less thought-out fic just prior called it’s just the sun in your eyes, but even before that - I just really love deity AUs. There’s something very poignant about a god, which is a pretty removed position from humans, that actively chooses to be like and empathize with humans. It calls into question concepts of humanity and divinity and where the line is drawn - and if we’re talking ape brain, I love found family and this fic is a slightly protracted dedication to that.
That’s really good stuff. Okay next question, I gotta be professional. I can’t be getting enormously emo over you’re human tonight again. What is a really good/special memory you have from your time in this fandom?
Being invited into the LBMSWA discord, hands down. It’s the first time I’ve had online friends proper, but given the nature of the mcyt fandom - most of us are online friends, I think - I’m so glad that I got to be friends with the LBMSWA people. I legitimately see you guys as family, from the game nights to the screaming over each other’s content. I’m literally living out the found family trope right now and it’s glorious.
Tell us about your latest project?
Oh gosh, there are a few. The biggest one would probably be the sequel to you’re human tonight, which will…. hopefully be coming out sometime this or next week. I feel like there’s not a lot I can say without spoiling it a ton, but a few things I can say for certain: a wedding may be in store, Dadza strikes, and the past is catching up to them all….
To the people reading the interview who haven’t read you’re human tonight I promise, this isn’t just me being dramatic (even though I am) but I am making liberal use of Chekhov’s gun.

What’s the most rewarding part of writing for you?
There’s a specific feeling when you… Make The Words Go. Like, when I write, and I write a passage or phrase that I like the rhythm or sound or weight of, I know. It feels amazing to write something and to love it for its….. literary-ness?? It’s satisfying! And the other big thing is when people tell me that they enjoy the fic and that it’s their comfort fic or it helped them through something. That’s a really powerful, really moving feeling; that I made something out of the joy of creation, and people were able to take refuge in that, be it any type of art, and I always feel incredibly humbled and honoured by that.
I know exactly what you’re talking about. The moments when the writing just happens and it feeling like you’re tugging a string outside yourself.

Fanfiction is so cool guys! All these writers writing all these things they love freely is so neat, shoutout to writers!! As well as all the other fancontent creators in the fandom each and every one of you are so cool.

Hello! My name is Maaiams (my-yams). I also go by Moonrise from my old deviantart days. I’ve been playing Minecraft since 2009 and started watching minecraft youtubers in 2011 with the first season of Hermitcraft. I got into the fandom again in the summer of 2019 with Hermitcraft season 6, and been following the Dream Team since December 2019. Tell us a bit about yourself!
Well, my name really depends on who you know me as. Normally, I’m Squish, but people who know me for my dnf fics will recognize me as Ship. I go by she/they pronouns, and I’m most known for my dnf fics, notably 7 Minutes in Heaven, but it’s 7 Days in Florida.
How’d you end up getting into the mcyt fandom?
Well, to be honest, I’ve been watching Minecraft Youtubers since about 2013; some of the first channels I subscribed to were actually Minecraft channels, believe it or not. The first fanfic I ever read was actually about mcyters. Despite that, I wasn’t in the fandom then, I didn’t even know what fandoms were back then. I think that honestly, I got into the mcyt fandom during the summer of 2020 after seeing a bunch of mcyters get recommended on my Youtube homepage and becoming invested in them, which led to me finding out about the mcyt fandom on Tumblr.
And then you started writing fics around the same time?
Not immediately. I got into a bunch around maybe April/May but didn’t start writing fics until I got into the dream team at the end of May/early June.
What has been, in your opinion, one of the most rewarding things about writing for this fandom?
Well, I can think of two things, really. One is that this has been a great way for me to just write because I love doing it so much. The second is all of the positive feedback everyone leaves, it’s been nothing like I’ve ever seen before. It’s just incredible. I remember when I posted my first fic, I was so nervous but I was met with so much support even then. I think that honestly, the biggest reason I was able to write 7 Days to completion was because of all the support I was receiving from it since day 1 (both figuratively and in reference to the fic’s chapter titles lmao).
Okay, random question time: favorite flavor of tea?
I… fam, I’m from the South- the only tea I’ve ever drunk has been iced and sweetened with sugar. My favorite drink is apple or grape juice though. My girlfriend loves tea though, I’m definitely going to try some when we meet up. We actually met bc of this fandom. She read 7 Days and followed me on Tumblr, and I recognized her Tumblr url from my ao3 comments and messaged her because I wanted to be friends, and it just kinda went from there. We just celebrated 6 months yesterday actually!
Congratulations! Speaking of your writing, is there something you’ve written that you’d like more people to read?
I feel like most of the oneshots I publish kinda fly under the radar for everyone because I think people just know me for 7 Days and don’t realize I have other works, which is understandable.
How long have you been doing creative writing, not just in the mcyt fandom?
I started writing fics around 2016 because of a fandom I joined, so it’s been almost five years of writing. Five years and I only have one completed fic, so it just kinda shows just how hard it has been for me to keep myself motivated.
I’ve written so many oneshots though. I wish I didn’t delete my other Wattpad account that had my writings from that fandom, I think the oneshot book I had for it had roughly 50 oneshots that were written over the span of about two years
Holy cow, that’s a lot of words.
Definitely. I mean right now with my 19 fics on ao3 I have a collective word count of 86,448 words.
Random fun fact, my fic “Thunder Singing Lullabies” was inspired by one of the oneshots in the collection, the title of the original oneshot was actually “Sick Stormy Mornings.”

Oh, hello! Thank you so much for asking! I love talking about myself!
1) From one to five stars, how would you rate your writing? (No downplaying yourself!)
Oh, hmmmm! I think I’d have to give it a solid four. When I reread it, I do genuinely find myself having a good time, even when I see all the flaws. Plus, I’ve had enough people tell me they like it and I can’t assume they’re ALL wrong lol. So, overall, pretty good, but there’s always room for improvement!
2) Why do you write fanfiction?
Self gratification all the way, baby! Every piece of fanfiction I have EVER written was produced solely because one day I was like “Hm. I want to read that, but I want to read it this specific way.” And when you’re that particular about what you wanna read, you gotta be the one to make it.
4) Are there any writers that inspire you?
Not?? Really? At least not super consciously. Not in writing style near as I can tell. That being said! I absolutely love love love @maaiams world building in “And I will fight god (until he comes down to meet me)” and that’s pretty much how I always imagine anything with Minecraft IRL.
7 What element of writing do you struggle with the most?
Meta wise, actually completing the thing that I started to write. Fun fact: I have posted over 238K words on AO3 over the course of five years. In that same time, I have almost exactly the same amount of abandoned material. Trust me, I spent a few hours mathing it out one day. I have a spreadsheet
As for what part of the actual story I struggle writing, I would probably have to say action scenes or anything super angsty. I don’t picture scenes well enough to write what I’m seeing in action sequences and angst is just a no-go for me. I’ll write fluff and humor with an undercurrent of implied angst and I can generally muddle my way through genuine heartfelt moments, but I don’t do bummers.

hi! ive noticed that you and several other writers (chrys, subwalls, etc) have a sort of community and i think a discord? and i think thats really cool! if ur ok with it, i wanted to ask what kind of experiences youve had with that sort of writing community (highs, lows, etc)? also, is this discord private/can new members join? have a great day/night! :D

Hello Anon! I am now going to rant about how cool this community is and my friends are, so sorry in advance about the massive blocks of texts I’m about to write.
I met most of my friends in this community through the LBMSWA discord. It’s a fairly small private server full of some awesome authors, artists, and generally cool people from the MCYT community, and honestly, it’s…pretty hard to describe. LBMSWA is a family, complete with mothers, siblings, The Cousin™️, aunts and uncles, fathers, and some short humans. It’s like the mafia if the mafia dealt in love and bullying instead of murder and smuggling illegal alcohol during prohibition. It’s, to say the least, an enigma. We murder our adopted internet children during an impromptu Dream SMP roleplay on Wednesdays and then play Jackbox on Saturday nights. I’d say LBMSWA is my home-away-from-home, but it’s more like… a home I carry in my pocket. Occasionally they call me a simp. I love them anyway, and I’d steal the stars for them, and they’d fight a bear (or eight) for me.
I’ve met a lot of other cool authors through The Book and Quill SMP/discord another private server, which has some of the most well-known writers in this community (like, I’m not kidding, there are some very famous people there it’s quite intimidating sometimes) who mostly chill, talk about various memes, and play Minecraft. (I’ve got the coolest treehouse, and go mining on Sunday afternoons when I just need to vibe).
As far as experiences in this community, I honestly couldn’t describe the highs and lows, because it’s been, in truth, one long and wonderful high. I’ll tell you a secret: practically every single author/artist in this community is excited to meet new people and make new friends. I joined LBMSWA because Firefly464 reached out to me. I met Subwaywalls, Hognose Snake, Blu000jay (aka Rox), and Chrys because I made fanart for their (brilliant) fics, and then continued to reach out. Lumberjack-halt aka my big sister Comfy reblogged my art and recommended my fic, and I DMed her on Tumblr to say thank you.
Now I edit Firefly’s fic, and she calls me Mom and sent me a stuffed Tiger named Charles. Subwaywalls shares snippets of her writing and she, Chrys, and I fight over being one another’s #1 fans. I have unfettered access to Comfy’s WIPs and bully her into writing more. Chrys and I show up in one another’s DMs and scream love at one another and sometimes cry. Nkhatoic and Wax asked me to help edit one of their fics shortly after we met, which was my first real editing gig, and one of my favorites. And that’s just scratching the surface. It’s been so rewarding not only to have so much love and creativity poured into me but to be able to aid and inspire other artists!
All this is to say, there are a lot of cool people out there, and most of them are very excited to meet you if you’re willing to reach out.

Sorry, this is quite the ramble. This community has been incredibly wonderful and life-changing, and I wouldn’t be doing this without them. Creators need support, and few people are as supportive and helpful as fellow artists and authors. I am incredibly thankful for them. <3
Just watched Inception for the second time for my friend’s birthday. This time around I picked up on slight shipping vibes between Arthur and Eames so I pulled up the ao3 tag for Inception and
there’s only about 10k works in the fandom, Arthur/Eames is 70% of the fics.
(wtf else did you expect, looking at a dnf rec list?) amazingly well written, and while it’s not my favorite dnf fic it’s damn near close. in the midst of a brutal heatwave, a suffering dream comes to terms with the fact that he is desperately in love with his best friend. everything i could say about this fic has already been said by nearly everyone who’s read it, so if you haven’t yet caved into the hype, just go for it. you won’t be disappointed.
(star wars au) an ongoing star wars au currently clocking in at almost 200k words. need I say more? everything about it absolutely slaps, each chapter is amazingly written, and it’s just good. also, can we just appreciate dream and tubbos dynamic in here? 10/10, amazing, must protecc. oh right, a summary: george, an exiled padawan turned engineer, must return to the jedi temple after attacks on it from an unknown assailant threaten the safety of himself and the other jedi.
Like Magic (ongoing) by KangarooKen, NotGra55 (Gra55)
(harry potter au) the unofficial official dnf harry potter au. we watch the young unlikely wizard pair grow up together throughout their years at hogwarts as they battle good old fashioned wizard racism. beautifully written, incredibly fun and suspenseful, and just an overall blast and a half.
(percy jackson au) percy jackson au? check. “road trip” (technically quest but u get what i mean)? check. enemies to friends to lovers? check. this fic follows the plot of the lightning theif (albeit loosely), but everything is explained enough where you don’t have to read percy jackson to understand what’s going on. basically after moving to the usa, george gets taken to camp halfblood where he learns that a) gods exist. b) he’s the son of poseidon and b) he needs to prove that he didn’t steal zeus’s master bolt.
(royalty/camelot au) my favorite piece of dnf media of all time. dubbed the official dnf camelot au, where dream is the heir to the throne and george is a servants son with a secret that couldp get him killed. these childhood friends grow up together and learn trust, love, and acceptance. (that summary did not justice to the masterpiece that is this fic) here’s the directors cut
(mc irl) a choose your own adventure fic with 13 different endings, where dream the hunter must kill george and stop him from beater the ender dragon. enough said.
(cowboy au) cowboys and outlaws horses and shit. and the big gay. it’s a cowboy au, what else did you expect? fucking yee haw (all seriousness this is a great read, i loved it so so so so much and i can’t wait for the final chapter to release).
dnf fic from drista pov. considering its unique perspective, it’s perfectly done. beautifully showcases a sibling relationship through drista and her memories/moments with dream, and it just works, y’a know? also drista supremacy.
(wwii au) i don’t cry when watching/reading anything sad. translation: i’m a heartless bitch. however, this fic is the only exception. it caused me to cry so hard my mom walked in my room and asked if i was ok. ‘nuff said.
(mermaid/high school au) a great example of shear the amount of variety in fics this fandom has to offer. when i started reading dnf fics i would have never thought i’d find one about a mermaid george hopelessly crushing on his human friend, who happens to be his schools star swimmer. yet here i am, and i am far from disappointed.
(soulmate au) 00:00:00 is the moment you meet your soulmate, as indicated but the clock ticking down on your wrist until the moment you meet. i’m not a fan of soulmate aus; this fic is the exception.
(artist au) i don’t usually cry while reading stuff, but this brought me damn near close. george is a painting conservator and chats it is with the ghost of the artist if the painting he is working on. they fall in a love.
(influencer au) george simps for a hot american instagram model. who knew he’d actually follow back?
The Withering (series) (series ongoing, 1 work completed) by App1e_Juice
(mc irl) lore and world building and fight scenes and everything i crave. what’s not to love? something starts making the plants and crops around dreams village wither, and must team up with new friends to find the cause of the mysterious disease plaguing the land.
(mc irl) a glitch in minecraft causes thousands of players from around the world to be trapped inside minecraft, with only one way of escape- beating the ender dragon. first dnf fic i ever read, and it’s still 10/10 for me.
(college au) #1 favorite college au. in which george is a cheerleader, and dream is the football teams rising star player. this one gets extra points because of the amazing karlnap moments sprinkled throughout. *chefs kisses air*
(royalty au) george must choose a suitor, but none of them are up to dream, his head knights, standards. or dream is hella jelly. also protective dream is perfect
(royalty au) close second for my favorite fic. go to royalty au for a quick serotonin bost. it’s all fluff and flowers and crushes, and i love it. criminally underrated.

statistically speaking, if you live in the US, at least one out of every 500 people you meet have read heatwaves.
Okay, the math major in me had to reblog this so I apologize but you seem to have run into a misconception about the AO3 hits system which makes your math a little inaccurate…
“Hits are a counter of how many times a work has been accessed. A hit is registered every time a visitor navigates to a work’s page, with the exception of if two visits in a row come from the same IP address, only the first is registered, moving through chapters will only register one hit in total, and if you’re logged in, hits are not counter when you visit your own works.”
To elaborate on the IP address exception: “if you visit a work, then leave the page, and view it again (from the same device and internet connection) the following week, and no other use has visited in the meantime, your second visit would not register as a new hit but if someone else visits a work after your first visit but before your second, it counts the second visit as a hit.”
Thus, using the hit system to account for how many people have read heatwaves is an inaccurate measure since people click on the fic every time a chapter was updated and if they wanted to reread, so it counted more hits as well.
A more “accurate” measuring value would be kudos because even non-users can kudo a work (for the first few chapters of heatwaves at least).
Thus, if we were to assume every person who read the work lived in the United States (which is completely inaccurate, though there’s not really a verifiable way to account the percentage of people who kudoed the work were from what countries), then a more accurate statistic would be ~0.00023% of the US population which is equivalent to around at least 1 out of every 4405 people, which is still an impressive number. But again, still really inaccurate since not everyone who read heatwaves is from the USA.
I actually just had a dream last night where I kept running into people at college who’ve read Heat Waves. Couldn’t decide it if counted as a nightmare.
