im not one to gatekeep anything but sometimes in my writing classes i begin to believe maybe you do need to be a little miserable or fucked up to be a good writer. i had to edit some guys personal essay that was supposed to be about overcoming struggle and he wrote about the stock market crash this year and how it effected his discord server
every single person in the notes of this post defending a random man youve never met based off a sarcastic post i made i need you to take the fucking L on this one because the dude almost got kicked today for defending child abuse and being a racist in class
ma’khia bryant was a 16 year old Black girl who called the police for help as she was getting mugged but was shot and killed with no warning minutes before the verdict for derek chauvin’s case was announced. here is the official gofundme for ma’khia, organized by her family. please boost this post and donate if you can.
official gofundme link for george floyd’s daughter btw. april 20th 2021 it still hasnt reached its goal
Yknow what while I’m here I know we as a website agreed to oppress the business majors but all the bullshit that comes around every April over ao3’s business practices makes me think we should’ve kept at least one to explain to people how nonprofits, despite their name, still need money to function and do not in fact run on rainbows and dreams alone
Woo! It’s a good thing y’all didnt oppress accounting majors because we understand this stuff better than business majors. (We were around before capitalism and we’re already set up for after capitalism.)
First things first - I dont regularly use or donate to AO3 but I have made an account to see what the fuss was about. Fanfiction just isnt my thing but I see why people like it.
AO3 is a 501©(3) organization. What that means - No Profit for owners or investors. What that does NOT mean - no cash at year end or not paying employees a livable wage/salary. If you’re contrivance with a non-profit is that they allow their employees to survive under capitalism, then you need to rethink your priorities.
That being said, AO3 has no employees. All work is volunteer based. ABSOLUTELY ZERO people are making money from this site. (Outside of contractors and professionals who are vendors and not affiliated with AO3.)
The auditor’s opinion is “unmodified.” That means these are as accurate as they get.
Their assets: $1.3M in cash. $197k in the value of the servers. (That’s the price they bought the servers minus depreciation. Depreciation is a tool we use to slowly devalue fixed assets over time. Without it, companies would recognize huge losses at year end when they sell old assets. That’s not reliable information when you’re trying to analyze the financials.) Why would a non-profit need a million dollars in cash? Partly to fund the next year’s work - it looks like they’re trying to bring on new servers which can cost upwards of $400k each time. They also have a history of protecting fans from people like Anne Rice who wants to sue them into debt and oblivion. We’ll talk about the legal stuff later. But in the case they would lose an expensive case, they need funds on hand to pay that out.
Revenues - this is the money in. They received $733k in donations and the like. Their expenses are about 37% of these. Which tells me, they are focused on managing their cash balance, and doing well. Again. No organization would survive if they had no cash at year end.
You might see the “In-Kind Revenue” and not know what that means. $190k is a big amount. But if you look at their expense statement on page (4) you’ll see “In-Kind Expenses” for the same $190k. In-kind means services in kind of cash. Or services instead of cash. So they had $190k of pro-bono (donated) legal work in 2019. They mention it in the budget and later in the audit footnotes. There are other “professional fees” for about $28k. That’s also legal/audit work but they had to pay cash for. It wasn’t donated.
Server fees = $79k (these are higher than 2018 because they installed a new server.)
Transaction fees = $27k (these are charges from your banks/credit cards/paypal to process donations. They are roughly 3% of donations which is about correct.)
Contractor fees = $15k (the budget noted they paid for a security test - this is actually a pretty low cost for something like this.)
Supplies = $14k (I couldn’t find notes on this but it’s similar to 2018, so it’s probably just normal business things.)
Postage = $12k (This is high compared to 2018, but I hazard a guess it’s related to sending out promotional items for donations.)
Advertising = $10k (looks like a new cost this year, but is related to fundraising efforts. And might be related to those promo items.)
Other non-cash expenses:
In-kind = $190k (those donated lawyer fees we talked about earlier.)
Depreciation = $74k (again this is an accounting process that every company with fixed assets does.)
The cash flows statement just confirms which expenses were and weren’t cash. And it shows us that they have $1.3M available for the next year. Glancing at the 2020 budget they planned on spending a third of that to upgrade servers. And they have another $400k budgeted for 2021. Honestly to me, the cash looks low considering some years (2018 in particular,) their legal work was valued at half a million. There is a risk that they would have to pay that amount out of pocket the same year they plan to bring on a new server upgrade.
So all in all, if you want to donate to AO3, this looks like a reliable organization to donate to. There is no evidence in the financials that they don’t deserve the donations. (And if you do donate, remember it is a tax credit!) I also don’t see any verifiable reasons not to donate. If you have other places you would rather place your donation, that’s fine! Do that! But there doesn’t seem to be a reason to campaign against their fundraising efforts.
This is a really neat breakdown! And it’s explained so that idiots like me who don’t know how stuff works can understand!
this is not justice.
this is accountability.
it’s good that it happened. it’s a start. it’s a relief, and a weight off the shoulders of many, and proof that police officers who murder can be held accountable for their actions, and that they cannot act with impunity.
it can’t be where it stops.
YES we are girls. Tumblr girls. We have been here since 2012. We saw mishapocalypse, we survived when One Direction broke up, we cried over the Dr Who premiers, and we stood together as one. Now you’re going to kick us out? Your internalized misogyny is showing
pack your bags our misogyny is about to get external
The two most common insulin products are Novo Nordisk’s Novolin and Eli Lilly’s Humulin. The main COVID vaccine providers are Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, and AstraZeneca. So, same people? Nope. I’m not saying these companies have never done anything wrong, but use factual examples.
2016- Pfizer was fined $106M for a 2600% price hike on its epilepsy drug.
2019- J&J increased most of its drug prices by ~7% (Inflation was ~1.8%).
2020- Astrazeneca hiked prices on its popular drugs by up to 6% (Inflation was ~1%). The company then made a second round of increases after it secured a $1.2B from the U.S. for vaccine development. Astrazeneca made over $3.6B in profit in the first half of 2020.
2021-Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J are prepared to raise the COVID-19 vaccine price after the pandemic is contained in the US. They’ve only resisted hiking the price now to save face while they are being used in the US. Meanwhile, Pfizer hasn’t given access to its vaccine to over 85% of the world.
The entire pharmaceutical industry is abysmal. Every company has a similar agenda: maximize profit even at the expense of human life
Sorry for repost but this is an important addition… the above comment said 500 yen is 5 bucks
It’s five bucks but also paper money in Japan starts at 1000 yen, or ten bucks. 500 yen is a coin, about the size of a quarter. So not only is it a comically small amount, he is in fact asking for literal pocket change.
Here’s a not so friendly reminder:
Just because you have received the vaccine does NOT mean you can just do whatever you want now and stop wearing a mask and social distancing. The pandemic is still happening.
If the virus continues to spread, we give it more opportunities to mutate and adapt, which could lead to a variant that’s immune to the vaccine, which would mean everything we’ve been doing would be a waste of time. Until enough people get the vaccine and herd immunity is achieved, keep following the rules, wash your hands, social distance, and wear a mask.
I saw another one of those posts going around about how hiring cleaners is immoral and I just want to scream into the tumblrs for a second.
I have employed a cleaner ever since I got post natal PTSD. They used to come once a fortnight, but after my second child was born they came once a week. They’ve been with us for more than ten years now. They come every week and do one hour of basic cleaning - they vacuum, dust, clean the bathroom and mop the floors. That’s it. It’s one hour and it does SO MUCH for me because it means I tidy up for them. I make the house CLEANABLE which my depressed and adhd ass would not do unless I knew someone else was coming in to do something for me.
Also I pay them. Well. I pay them more per hour than I got as a teacher when I first started work. A LOT MORE. I recognise that they have travel and material expenses, and I put their pay up every year to accommodate for inflation.
They’re amazing people, I consider them friends, we chat a fair bit when they come to do their jobs if I happen to be at home, we exchange presents on significant holidays.
They keep me SANE.
If you treat workers well, NO WORK IS IMMORAL. My cleaners get paid well above minimum wage, obviously enjoy their work and are fulfilling a need. Is it a luxury need? Yeah. But guess what? I have disposable income and this is a luxury I choose to spend it on. Because I fucking hate cleaning, and I wouldn’t do it properly or consistently even if I didn’t.
So fuck off telling me what I can and cannot spend the money that I’ve earned on. I’m not Jeff Bezos, and if I was I would treat my employees as well as I treat my cleaners.
I’m going to keep screaming about this until people understand that all labour is valuable and skilled labour, and that nobody’s job is inherently bad so long as they are treated with respect and paid a fair wage.
That’s why we don’t demean sex work, either. Because work is work, and labourers are labourers, and shaming people’s jobs does nothing to help them to get the salaries and respect they deserve.
Stop discouraging people to fire their cleaners and start encouraging them to pay their cleaners handsomely with benefits. JFC.
gordon ramsey: is the food good here?
My favourite thing about that show is how he treats servers. It was also the source of some very intense fantasies when I was a barista of him busting into my cafe, calling my boss a fucking idiot, then taking me against the broken dishwasher.
Nice try, motherfuckers. We’re back.
Proof this isn’t a troll blog asap
This has got to be a troll blog lmao
Genuinely love how whenever someone gets bullied off this website someone crawls into their leftover shell to puppet the corpse like a cat playing with a dead bird
hey, did yall know the quileute nation’s still (it is april 2021 as i write) trying to raise money to move out of that potential tsunami hazard zone and onto higher ground? i remember it was trending for a little while on tumblr when the twilight book came out but my corner of the web’s been quiet on it since.
there’s a lot going on all over the world right now but if you can spare them even 5 bucks, thats 5 bucks they wouldnt have had without you! please help them if you can.
on one hand i understand the frustration with the fact that duolingo is only Now putting up yiddish as a language when they have fictional languages like klingon on there but on the other hand part of the reason why is that they literally for years could not pick a specific dialect of yiddish and ended up actively employing yiddish scholars to work in bits from academic+historical yiddish as well as contemporary vernacular yiddish and basically had to build the entire thing ground-up rather than being handed some showrunner’s language bible
anyway it’s actually really interesting to read about how they built the yiddish program for duolingo yall should check it out
I accidentally found out one of my friends has a huge dick, and in a panic I blurted out “congratulations on the pipe, man.” What’s my next move after this
no you’re good. thhats the end of the transmission
