Presto is the proprietary animation software developed and used by Pixar Animation Studios. It was originally created for Brave, then used in Monsters University, and now is a staple in all future films. What makes Presto so special is the ability for the animator to interact with the characters and environment in real-time. In this video we can see an animator working with Sully, and you’ll notice that we can even see the actual hair on his body and there is absolutely no lag in the computer’s response. 

Working with fur and hair has always been a huge issue; because of the huge CPU demand animators never saw the fur present while working. Normally what happens is the animator animates, then when they’re done render the scene back, and if there are mistakes repeat these two steps until the animation is complete. From a business perspective, this is a huge waste of money. Now with Presto the animator isn’t hindered by a lagging system! This doesn’t help with just fur, this also helps with any surface-based details that can normally only be viewed when rendered. You’ll also see that lights and shadows are able to respond to the character’s movement in real-time as well. From a technological perspective, this is a god-send to animators and makes production significantly more efficient.
