Question: Okay, this is awkward but i just listented to the song "Black cat" for the first time and i don't really understand the meaning behind it.. Can you help?
I can try! I think the first verse is just about a cool cat haha… maybe he doesn’t exactly fit in (his Sunday best ain’t good enough for the rest of the world) but he’s just kind of passive, (waits in line) and does what he has to.
The complex disconfigured man & the investigator paints a pretty vivid picture of something ominous? But I don’t really get it myself haha
“The wonders of his mind” “chemical swirls” = drugs (hallucinogenics? something hard and mind-altering)
Now the song turns and the rest is all about war. The “black cat” who believes in peace is drafted into war. Like many wars (maybe specifically Vietnam?) this war seems to have no purpose and is kind of a mess, but he has to fight anyway. The peacekeeper becomes aware of this (veil being lifted = his new perception) and is killed (”The guts he had smothered on the ground”). Then his family gets a letter from the government saying that the soldier was killed fighting for America. The black cat’s nine lives ran out because he died.
This echoes a lot of anti-war songs that were popular in the 60s and 70s [like this one!] to me, and I think Chris was really inspired by them. I think he identifies with the black cat character (wearing penny loafers haha, not really fitting in, doing drugs to open his mind, just going with the flow) until the black cat gets sucked into war (which Chris hasn’t been in but clearly thinks about).
Let me know if you have more specific lines you don’t understand! This was actually pretty fun to do haha. And if anyone can contribute some ideas go for it!
