It was a dramatic life change for many - online school, working from home, not seeing your friends or family, leaving your home much much less often or not at all anymore… It may feel weird to go from “The world feels upside down” to “I finally understand my own feelings”. But it makes perfect sense: 

Many people suddenly found a lot more quiet alone time in their life. We tend to push away big questions like “Who am I” while we are busy and around other people. During lonely times, it’s harder to ignore those questions. It can be scary when you suddenly have no appointments outside of home to distract you from that, and it can be beautiful. Most likely, it was both at once.  

You didn’t choose a weird time at all. There is no wrong time to learn more about yourself.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but going to thrift stores and buying all the usable sheets and t-shirts and jeans and then cutting them up to make rag rugs or yarn or whatever for your shabby chic/cottagecore aesthetic isn’t solar punk.

It’s gentrification.

You are taking resources away from people who need them so that you can pretend to live a less consumptive lifestyle. You are cosplaying sustainability.

The whole fucking point of rag rugs etc. was that you made use of textiles you already had that could no longer be used for their intended purpose, and you extended the lifecycle of the item by turning it into something else useful instead of throwing it in the garbage. When you buy clothing that still has use *as clothing* just to cut it into rags to make a rug, you’re *speeding up* the consumption of materials. You’re shortening the lifecycle. You are consuming MORE.

And you’re doing it by buying up resources that marginalized people need. Those thrift store sheets would look so much better on somebody’s fucking bed, but since you wanted that Little House on the Prairie vibe, someone is sleeping on a bare mattress now whilst trying to save their pennies to go to fucking Wal-Mart for bedsheets. And that denim throw pillow probably looks adorable on your sofa, but somebody needed a pair of sturdy jeans for that job they’re trying to get, and now there’s nothing available.

But sure, your house looks cute. I guess that’s important.

Cool. Anyway I’ve actually worked at a thrift shop and don’t listen to this person.

We use the money we make from selling items to help pay people’s rent, bills and grocery tabs.

We get so many donations that we can’t store them all, so if we don’t move stock fast, stuff gets sent to a recycling plant. It doesn’t get stored in an endless warehouse until it’s bought by someone who “needs” it. It gets chopped up anyway. The only difference is, we don’t get paid for it when it gets recycled, and that’s two bucks less that we have to go towards helping people.

Avoiding buying stuff from a thrift shop so poorer people can have it just means we have less of an ability to help those people with looming bills and empty cupboards. I promise you the thrift shop isn’t going to run out of sheets and shirts ffs.

Hey, so I’ve also worked at thrift shops, and not all of them are paying people’s rent.

This isn’t “don’t buy things from thrift shops because the poors will be sad”, this is “stop buying up all the perfect condition sheets and jeans and shit just to cut it up for your Pinterest crafts because some people actually need that stuff in its intact and usable form”.

A lot of (for-profit) thrift stores in my area have priced themselves out of reach of the people who need them, because they now have a consumer base of “upcyclers”, and the charity shops with fixed low prices are largely empty of things like sheets and jeans. I’ve taken foster kids shopping for thrift store clothes and have often come away with nothing because the few decent things in larger sizes (i.e. pieces with larger amounts of fabric to be cut up) were priced higher than I could buy for new. I’m talking about being unable to find one pair of jeans and a short sleeve button front shirt for less than fifty bucks. At a thrift store.

Thrift stores *do* run out of useable sheets. Thrift stores don’t run out of *shirts*, probably , but they do run out of decent shirts in larger sizes suitable for job interviews. If you need a shirt, go ahead and buy a shirt. But don’t take all the decent shirts off the rack and cut them up to make a scrap quilt or whatever because you like the sustainability aesthetic.

Something I should have mentioned in my original post - the local Goodwill here has recently started selling pulled stock by the pound, which is a good way to get raw materials for crafting.

2020 saw several record-breaking fires, both in Australia in the beginning of the year, and in the western U.S. through northern summer and fall. Smoke from fires in both regions reached so high into the atmosphere that it formed clouds and continues to travel around the globe today.

In the Siberian Arctic, unusually high temperatures helped drive at least 19 fires in the region. More than half of them were burning peat soil – decomposed organic materials – that stores a lot of carbon. TIL ‘US Radium’ employed women to paint dials of watches with radioactive radium paint. The women were instructed to point their brushes on their lips. This led to many of the workers’ losing their jaws and even deaths. Company paid examiners covered it up and claimed they had syphilis.

for anyone interested, i HIGHLY recommend reading “The Radium Girls” by Kate Moore

the story is so insane and heartbreaking. the working class female employees were kept completely in the dark about the potential dangers of radium and their workplaces were extremely hazardous. the radium paint got all over their workrooms, bodies, and clothes. the women noticed that the radium made them twinkle in the dark and look beautiful, so they would spread it all over their dresses before going out to party. also, from what i remember, they would go so far as to brush it into their teeth to make their smile look more dazzling. 

basically, it was marketed to the young women as glow in the dark glitter when really they were really ingesting hundreds if not thousands of micro-doses of radioactive materials. daily. for years.

the workers were almost all young women just beginning adulthood and carving out a life for themselves, and the radiation sickness they contracted due to the company’s negligence caused them to die extremely slow, extremely painful, and tragically early deaths en masse.

workers were denied medical coverage from the company. later, multiple workers later sued the company and made labor rights history by establishing the right of individual workers to sue for damages from corporations due to labor abuse. 

Saying they had syphilis was a deliberate tactic to ruin the girls’ reputations by implying that they were sleeping around (since syphilis is sexually transmitted), therefore making people less likely to listen to them.

The male management wouldn’t go near the radium without protective clothing, but doctors were paid to go into the factories and tell the girls that it was good for them. (The same companies also sold food and drink laced with radium on the same principle, citing studies that they had paid for.)

To prove that the radium companies were responsible for the deaths, they exhumed some of the dead girls to test their corpses for signs of radiation poisoning. Their coffins glowed in the dark.

I’m loving this new trend of people going to zoos and participating in animal enrichment. We use to observe large exotic animals for our entertainment, but the fact is that we are now trying to make ourselves equally as entertaining for them. It’s interactive, completely parpicipatory and I would argue that eventually someone’s gonna come up with something new enough that it expand ethologists understanding about how some animals think, problem solve, communicate and feel and I think its fantastic.
