A hero without a cape
Her name is Theresa Kachindamoto, and she is a senior chief - political leader of a region with a population of about 900,000 people.
She didn’t run for election; she was appointed, without her knowledge, while she was living and working in a completely different part of the country. She just received a call one day telling her to come back to her childhood home, because she was in charge now.
So she did; and when she arrived, she discovered widespread sexual abuse of children. She browbeat 50 uncooperative local leaders into accepting her decision to annul all the marriages. She then fired four of them when they continued to allow children to be married off in their areas. She still faces widespread opposition from parents who consider it their right to sexually abuse their daughters if they want to; but Kachindamoto very evidently does not give a fuck, and is continuing to use political and legal means to protect children in the region.
She’s not just an anonymous do-gooder; she’s an effective political leader despite incredibly difficult circumstances. Theresa Kachindamoto.
There was an arrest across the street from my place in Oakland one day – three cop cars with a bullhorn and guns out – and before I could even get out the gate there were a couple people posted up and one of them was filming and another one was narrating in a calm but very loud voice, just
“HE IS COOPERATING! HIS HANDS ARE EMPTY! HE IS DOING WHAT HE IS TOLD TO DO! HE IS HOLDING STILL! HIS HANDS ARE EMPTY! HE IS NOT BEING THREATENING! HE HAS PUT HIS HANDS BEHIND HIS HEAD AS ASKED! HE IS NOT RESISTING!”
and that was something I hadn’t thought to do before. It certainly let the cops know what the narrative of eye witnesses was going to be.
I especially liked “his hands are empty” because this statement would still be true and a witnessed reason the police should not become violent even if it turned out he had a weapon on his person somewhere.
I see people in NYC stop and record a lot. Even if they are just being nosey, that’s still witnesses if shit goes down.
Welcome to Australia…
Where an already endangered species is on the brink of functional extinction…
Oh, and 500 million animals unique to this country have already lost their lives, upon homes that have been destoryed and lives lost of people as well…
I mean… we’re only living in a literal inferno…
415 fires. Fuck are we dying…
Oh yeah and people are just fleeing to the damn ocean, you know?
Do you want to know what Hell on Earth looks like..?
Because there it is in all it’s unfiltered, firey rage…
There it is… my home from space…
This is only the beginning. Our country has not only entered a new decade, it seems a new dawning era as well, because this flaming apocalypse doesn’t show any sign of stopping any time soon.
And you know what saddens me? I’ve never seen Australian tragedies trending here on this website. I mean it’s been going on for months and only now does it seem to really be getting recognized, even if it is only at #9.
And I’m going to be honest with you here - the internet, and media in general is so American centric, this website being no exception. You’d think that an entire continent being on fire for several months with devastating consequences would have more recognition, but no, it really doesn’t. The most notes I’ve ever seen on a post about the Australian fires is at least a few thousand, and that’s about it.
So just… please. If you can, with this post or any other post in regards to the fires going on down here, reblog. Because the only thing that should be spreading like wildfire, is a post about a burning country…
Parent: yells at and threatens child over a mistake
Child: doesnt want to spend time with them afterwards
Parent:*yells at and threatens child over a mistake*
Child:*doesn’t want to admit their mistakes and starts keeping secrets from their parent*
parent: *yells at and threatens child over them self-harming*
child: *doesn’t talk to parents about their issues and feels worse*
Parent: *attributes all their child’s achievements to god and all the mistakes to the child*
Child: *actively avoids academic achievement and becomes an atheist*
THAT LAST ONE IS WHY I STOPPED ATTENDING CHURCH AFTER I STARTED THERAPY.
Parent: *uses personal info, told to them in confidence as ammo to make child feel bad*
Child: *never tells the parents about how they feel or their personal insecurities*
wow this tea is exceptionally tasty tonight thank you
Parent: *tells child they’re overreacting every time they speak up about poor mental health*
Child: *never tells parent what’s wrong until they break into a screaming match with parent*
Parent: *immediately dismisses or laughs at child’s ideas about plans, future and clothes choices, without consideration even when asked for ideas.*
Child: *becomes indecisive or never gives ideas because they’ll just be dismissed regardless of how good they are. Answers every question with ‘I don’t mind/ care.*
A fawn curled up beside a fake deer which is used for target practice.
A lot of people are super upset by this, so here is a reminder from someone who has worked professionally with deer:
A fawn tucked down alone like this is almost never an orphan.
Fawns are extremely small, and their best defense is to stay hidden as often as possible. Unless they are nursing or moving to a new spot, tucking themselves down in grass or against bigger objects is their best defense.
What would be an easy giveaway to a lurking predator that there is a vulnerable baby nearby? A much larger, much more visible adult female deer!
To protect her baby, a female deer will avoid the baby most of the day (except to nurse it or move it), and she will keep an eye on the baby from a distance to make sure everything is alright.
If you approach a fawn (or god forbid pick it up and take it home), I’d bet money that 9.5 times out of 10, mama is alive and well, watching you from a distance, desperately hoping you’ll move on without hurting her baby.
It’s not orphaned, it’s not abandoned.
Working in wildlife, if there is one thing I could magically make the entire human population know, it would be this information.
Every summer, people show up at wildlife rehabbers, state park offices, ranger stations, and even deer farms, with allegedly orphaned fawns that they’ve “saved.”
Tragically, we pretty much have to destroy these animals every time.
Deer farms legally cannot take in wild deer because of the extremely dangerous risk of disease transmission to their livestock population (look up chronic wasting disease). Contact with a wild deer could doom their animals and their livelihoods.
I have worked on deer farms and in wildlife rehab.
Deer are extremely difficult to raise, rehabilitate, and release. Mostly, it’s impossible. Often, they simply refuse to eat from anything but their mother, and we have to decide between letting them waste away for three days or so, or euthanizing them.
Deer are also overpopulated in many states now, and we can’t afford the resources to raise them. There are species more in need of our assistance.
If you see a fawn all alone, unless it’s next to its dead parent, it’s not an orphan.
I am begging you to leave it be.
In this case, this fawn is almost certainly fine. It’s just hunkered down like it should be, waiting for Mama.
But it does make for a great photo!
I’ve seen this photo circulating with people assuming a hunter has killed this animal’s mother, and one more thing to note: baby fawns are born in late spring and summer. Hunting season doesn’t open till autumn. By the time it’s legal for you to shoot any deer, there are no spotted fawns left, they grow up and lose their coats fairly quickly. Hunting season takes place close to the deer’s mating season, by which time they’re more concerned with making new fawns than mothering current ones.
(There are some areas where you can get a subsistence hunting permit for other times of year but that’s generally only in areas where poor rural people need to be able to hunt to have food)

Barnes and Nobles is gonna start serving food and alcohol.
Everybody’s cracking jokes about how it’s a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the age of Amazon.
But you know what? Props to them. This is exactly what Blockbuster didn’t do. At no point was Blockbuster like “Hey, movie rentals aren’t the lucrative enterprise they once were. Perhaps it’s time we become known for our cheesy garlic bread.”
Okay but…if someone wants to take me on a date to a Barnes and noble and get me dinner and a drink and then let me peruse the stacks like I’m not saying no. A sandwich, a beer, and 2-5 books on various topics I hope I’ll someday read about? Good night.
The Swedish equivalent of Blockbuster is now best known for its candy, snacks and sodas.
This is El Ateneo Grand Splendid, an old theatre turned bookstore in Buenos Aires:
The stage itself was turned into a cafe:
You can’t even begin to comprehend the massive amounts of money this place makes, despite the fact that they turned the theatre boxes into reading nooks like this:
I’ve literally spent days holed up in there reading books for free while also consuming massive amounts of coffee and pastries.
Adapt or die, people.
Take me to Buenos freaking Aires… Leave me in this bookshop… Never look for me, you will not find me again.
If I ever get to Buenos Aires I’mma vanish into this bookshop and live there forever.
ummm??? this is everything
What’s your fantasy?
I wake up, my debt is all paid off, my bank account is full, my relationships with my family are healthy, and I’m able to travel anywhere in the world.

i speak french in public to my grandparents and to my boyfriend. people are surprised that im bilingual and say its cool and ask me to teach them some time
but when one of my classmates speaks arabic in public to her family, she gets strange and disgusted looks. no one asks to be taught arabic. no one says its cool that shes bilingual
its racism plain and simple
this is a problem that goes unnoticed too often please fucking fix it.
French is probably one of the most beatiful languages in the world, whilst arabic, for all it’s intricacies and history.. is not.. French is also way more useful to know in a western society than arabic, so to jut it all down to racism is a bit hasty
im fluent in french and god is it the most useless language i have ever known. i only speak fluent conversations with like. two people. i dont know any native french speakers in the us beside my grandparents and honestly i dont think they exist. its an ugly language once you speak it fluently anyways and its just weird english people who think its pretty
but arabic though……my friend speaks it a lot. she speaks it with her immediate family. despite her talking in english at school, she knows many out-of-town people who speak arabic. the circle of people she can speak arabic to is huge. its a very useful language, especially considering the refugees coming in. theres not even anything particularly bad sounding about it?
so its racism. arabic is primarily spoken by middle eastern people. french is primarily spoken by white people. my middle eastern friend gets strange and disgusted looks for speaking her language. my white ass gets praised for speaking mine. its racism
but sure….go excuse racism…..getting strange and disgusted looks for speaking a middle eastern language is totally because its “””not useful””” and “””not beautiful”””
People get mad at spanish speakers for speaking their language in public, and spanish is one of the most useful languages to know and is also a very beautiful language. when celebrities speak it it’s seen as sexy or charming. when it’s used in music it’s poetic and romantic.
but when the guy on the corner is speaking spanish to his buddy, suddenly it’s “this is america, we speak english” or “got back to mexico”
“French is one of my most beautiful languages-”
it’s really not tho
How about we vote in a law that puts a cap on how long a government shut down can happen… say 20 days… before the president has to agree to a budget solution or else the 21st day congress begins the process of impreachment because civilian jobs and salaries and livelihoods are not a bargaining tool for the president to abuse is order to get their way
If you aren’t serving the people then you aren’t doing the job of the presidency and you need to be replaced
civilian jobs and salaries and livelihoods are not a bargaining tool for the president to abuse is order to get their way

To any upcoming freshmen: don’t date seniors
When I was about to start high school, my mom told me that senior boys were grown men, and if any were interested in me then I should ask myself why they, as adults, were interested in a kid right out of middle school. And why they couldn’t get someone their own age.
Be safe, kiddos. A year counts a lot more when you’re younger, and the kind of senior who wants to date a freshman is well aware of this.
