Jama Michalika (Michalik’s Den) café, Kraków, Poland.
Not so much a café as a lesson in local history. Established in 1895, it has witnessed the activity of Młoda Polska (Polish Art Nouveau) movement and Zielony Balonik (Green Baloon) literary cabaret. Its interiors were designed by the architect Franciszek Mączyński and artists Karol Frycz and Henryk Szczygliński. Apart from the furniture designed by Szczygliński in 1906 that didn’t survive over time, the place has hardly changed and still features loads of original artwork from the fin-de-siècle era, including an anachronous cloakroom and a smoking section.
