There’s some confusion in the Princess Principal fandom due to all the code names and lies, so here’s a simple explanation of who’s whom and what we should be calling them. (spoilers up to episode 6)
This is Ange. Her real name is Charlotte. Her fake name is Ange Le Carre according to the wiki, Ange Lucare according to the subtitles, and Angers according to the official website as translated by google. She’s
sistersin love with Princess.
Tag her as Ange Lucare and Ange Le Carre until there’s a consensus on one.
This is Princess Charlotte. She’s also referred to as simply Princess. Her real name is Ange, because of course it is. She’s
in lovesisters with the other Ange.
Tag her as Princess Principal Charlotte because the other options are taken.
This is Dorothy. Her real name is Daisy MacBean and her fake name is her mom’s name, Dorothy MacBean. This is assuming she still goes by the name MacBean, which I wouldn’t be surprised to find out she doesn’t.
Tag her as Dorothy MacBean, but feel weird about it because that’s her mother’s name which she took after running away from her abusive father.
This is Chise Todo. Her identity is confirmed because her dad said it and probably wasn’t lying.
Tag her as Chise Todo and Todo Chise to accommodate the cultural language barrier with Japanese names on English social media.
This is Beatrice. We have no idea what her real name is. She’s a master spy of a magnitude we can only imagine, she’s probably a quadruple triple double agent with at least a dozen layers of fake identities at this point.
She’s actually not even from this show. She’ll first appear in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Vento Aureo, but then she’ll steal the time machine from Steins;Gate Zero and travel back to the past (our time) and infiltrate Princess Principal.
Tag her as Beatrice.
I hope this helped clear up some of the confusion. Stay tuned for a part 2 on ships if I ever manage to figure those out.
Hey what do you y'all think Ange and Princess’ ship name should be? Leave suggestions!
This is a somewhat noteable line here;
Selenites, much like Cavorite, is a direct homage to one of the stories of early sci-fi icon H. G. Wells , specifically the story “ The First Men in the Moon “ which involves the scientist Dr Cavor and his proprietary material Cavorite, which could selectively negate gravity.
Obviously, an nearly identical Cavorite is one of the main conceits of Princess Principals alternate steampunk setting; not just providing gadgets but the general advancement of technology and the utter superiority of the British Empire (or Albion, interchangeably) leading to the state of affairs which our story is set in.
Selenites as can be told from context in this anime itself was a term used in “ The First Men in the Moon “ to refer to a strange insect-like intelligent species that Dr Cavor and his companion Mr. Bedford discovered on the moon when they used a cavorite-utilizing ship to travel there.
What further relevance this might have to the setting and story of Princess Principal is unknown, and most likely slight. But the inspiration used to develop the world can be seen in later 19th century sci-fi, fitting in with the victorian steampunk setting we see in the anime!
