Greg, if I get taken out on other shit, I might need you to take my cultural temperature. Uh-huh. Got it. As in? Uh, wh - what does that, uh, mean?
SUCCESSION 3.01 - Secession
Also about your Connor post the show has eluded to Connor’s mom being mentally ill and that she may have had to be hospitalized and I’ve always thought that once Logan married Caroline and had Kendall he really abandoned Connor and left him to take care of his mother on his own. So I imagine he also used the time with his siblings when they were little as escapism and because he could help them in a way he perhaps wasn’t able to help his mom.
That’s a really interesting take, anon!
I agree and I disagree, I think, just because Logan always reads to me as very possessive of his children. He keeps them really, really close, and, at least with the golden trio, seems to relish in the moments they choose him over their mother. The latter could just be because of his and Caroline’s particular relationship, but I don’t think the former is. Logan’s always kept Connor around not just for the personal events like Thanksgiving, but as a part of the business face of the company too, even though Connor’s never worked in it – the PGM mixer, the shareholder meeting, even placating him with a faux ‘job’ as the family schisms in 3.01.
I think for Logan, Connor’s his son, and as with the golden trio, the emphasis for Logan is on the his. As far as he’s concerned, all four of them belong to him, and there’s a lot I think that can be read into that when you consider the fact that Logan never really knew his father and was raised by a violent man in his Uncle Noah. He’s not just the perpetrator of trauma, he’s the victim of it too, and that’s one of the things I love about the show. How abuse is passed down generationally and is left to splinter in the chests of children.
I agree with you that I think Logan likely abandoned Connor’s mother as her mental health issues became more prevalent, particularly as she was hospitalised like you said (which the show did seemingly confirm in 2.08!), but it makes me wonder if Logan did the opposite with Connor. If he didn’t leave Connor with his mother, but separate him from her under the guise of protecting him when really it was about claiming him. Connor seems to be really familiar with Caroline’s estate in 1.09 - gosh, he literally gives Willa the tour and the history - and it makes me wonder if he spent those mid-to-late teen years there instead.
Putting an ocean between his children and their mother is something Logan did with the golden trio after all, and it would make sense to me that he might do it in the reverse for Connor while his own mother was unwell. Whisking him away to a foreign country and setting him up in his new, shining family - the monstrous love in the keeping, because Logan’s own mother never kept him.
Plus imagine poor Connor left to a mother who isn’t his (maybe isn’t any of theirs, with how much she doesn’t seem to like the job), in a big, museum of a house in a country he doesn’t know, with his father barely around as he constantly flies back to the US for work. Estranged from his mother, but not by choice, and kept, once again, right where Logan wants him.
Speaking as someone who has recently slipped & fallen into a massive vat of big brother Connor feels and also plans to study childhood development. All I can think of now is that when the golden trio got hurt in their infancy/toddlerhood (scraped knee, fall, etc) he was probably who they wanted for comfort.
Anon!! I am right there in that vat of feelings with you. I’ve talked about it on here a few times, but I became my brother’s guardian when I was in my early twenties and he was about 14/15, and as a result stories where siblings step up when parents step out really resonate with me. The fact that the show is making that this understated touchstone with Connor and Kendall, Roman and Shiv is just striking such a chord in me as a result. I really love it a lot.
I love, love, love your headcanon that Connor was the one the baby golden trio wanted when they got hurt too, especially since you know they wouldn’t have gotten much of anything from Logan or Caroline.
I’ve been thinking a lot too about Connor’s social circle lately, and about how it’s this odd sort of thing that he seems to actually be really gregarious between his fast friendship with Maxim Pierce and the way the Conheads have started gravitating towards him, and how it’s kind of at odds with this sense of him having had to pay a woman to stay with him? It’s really given me this headcanon that Connor’s had this sort of awkward socialisation because he went from being the protected and isolated lone heir for Logan until he was 15 when Kendall was born, and then his life sort of shifted to being, at least for a while, about them (arguably still is - gosh, he’s the first person to drop everything and come whenever any of them really need him - think him being Shiv’s go-to back-up with Marcia in 1.02!)
It makes me feel like he lost this chapter of partying, of spring breaks and holidays at a gilfriend’s place, because he always went home. Always needed to get back on weekends for Shiv’s first steps or Roman’s first words or to help Kendall get his show and tell ready for kindegarten. Had to be there for these tiny little people his brickwall of a dad made with this sharp-edged woman, and it sucked sometimes to go back to college during the week and see his friends with new inside jokes and the girl he was flirting with holding hands with someone else, but he didn’t regret it, not when he got hugs from Kendall and special, stamp-decorated letters from Shiv and play-doh-pipe-cleaner-googly-eyed creatures from Roman.
Doesn’t even regret it now, when the three of them talk shit about him and are at each other’s throats, because he’s used to weathering storms with them, and he figures he’ll take it, because Kendall still hugs him, and Shiv still calls him, and last time Connor went to Roman’s, he found the bright, feathered fishing lure from that trip all those years ago, sitting hidden in a box on his buffet.

“She wobbles forwards, and yeah, her knees are quivering, too, but then she sees the smirk slip off his face and a rush of power bursts through her. His throat jumps as he swallows and if Beth didn’t know better, if it was anyone but him in front of her, she swears she sees a flicker of fear behind his eyes.”

It’s Love out of Lust by Lykke Li! An absolute fave tbh.
In plain English, then, she wants you to know this: she cuts through bullshit like a blade. Shiv, so nicknamed, choreographs ease as she relaxes, latte in hand.
“No bullshit, then,” I challenge her. “You’ve been to Starbucks before?”
“I’ve licked the occasional corporate bean,” Shiv says. “Seriously, no bullshit. I like a pumpkin spice when the nights come in.”
Waystars: they’re just like us.
8, 22, 74, and 93 for the spotify wrapped ask pls 💗
Thank you! This is such a random selection, haha.
“I mean, every time you get a role, you’re like: ‘Oh, this one’s the one. I’m going to really work out and get fit and look like the movie star I would hope to become or have a career doing.’ And every time, I’m like: ‘Can I really be fucked subscribing to an unrealistic beauty standard that then perpetuates and makes more women unhappy because they feel like they can’t attain something that’s not actually realistic anyway?’”
Happy 34th Birthday, Sarah Ruth Snook! (December 1, 1987)
What do you think about Stewy not being at Ken's birthday? :(
Devastated for Kendall, even though I do still love the idea that he uninvited hm after seeing him hugging Josh, haha.
On a narrative level, I think it makes sense though. The whole throughline of the party was that Kendall didn’t really have any genuine relationships anymore that weren’t hiding an agenda (Shiv, Roman, Greg), fractured (Rava) or second to the relationships he really wanted (Naomi, Connor [I do think he loves Connor and wanted him there, he just wanted Shiv and Roman more]). Now that the shareholder meeting’s done and Sandi and Stewy’s bid for Waystar is mostly resolved, I think Stewy’s absence was more narratively effective than his presence would’ve been, especially given Shiv made a point of bringing it up.
Stewy worked with Kendall again at the shareholder meeting because he needed to (and I’d argue maybe did actually want to too), but their relationship is anything but repaired, and Stewy staying away from Kendall’s self-confessed ‘big fucking nervous breakdown of a 40th’ is sad, but also makes sense for where they’re at.
What do you think Rios Grandmas response was to Nicks arrest and do you think it will affect their relationships?
I’m actually not too sure, anon! The show was pretty vague on how much Rosa knew and / or endorsed about what Nick and Rio did for work, and while she came across as knowing in the dinner scene in 4.06, I think the fact that Dave and Phoebe used Nick’s shell companies in her name against Nick at the end of the show casts more of a doubt across that overall.
Generally speaking, I tend to think that Rosa knew what Nick and Rio did in broadstrokes, but not really the details. As a result, she might’ve signed off on things without realising the full extent of what she was putting her name to, or even been actively complicit herself. In that sense, I don’t think Nick’s arrest necessarily would’ve shocked her, but I think it probably smarted, especially when she heard about the extent of it and the fact that Rio not only broke the partnership, but was the one to effectively get his brousin arrested.
What that means for Rosa’s response - there could’ve been guilt there if she had been actively complicit, or anger, or hurt, or (most likely) some combination of all three. She’s already had one grandson serve time after all, and given Rosa raised both of them, I can only imagine the degree of exhaustion and pain that comes with seeing kids in your care swallowed up by the prison system.
I think she probably would’ve tried to keep them together though after the fact of it all. Family being important to her was the character beat stressed the most with her, and I can see her trying to pull Rio and Nick back together in the aftermath of s4.
I don’t know though! What do you guys think?
Hey Would you ever write a Brio succession au fic?
Hi! I’d never say never! I’ve had a concept for one, which I talked about a bit here, but my WIP list is so long at the moment, I’m not sure if this one’ll ever really make the cut. I’ll just have to see how much writing I get done over the end of year break :-)
Guess who just got all her lockdown hair cut off, it’s meeeee
god tom and shiv are just so fascinating to me right now. Apparently they have a talk that's like the one on the beach in this upcoming episode, I wonder what they'll say? I know a lot of people want them to get divorced but I think that would effectively get rid of Tom's character so I'm not sure...
That question is living rent free in my head right now, anons! I honestly have no idea. It’s this kind of fascinating line that the show walks when it comes to Shiv and Tom where there’s simultaneously so much to say, and nothing to say at all. The situation between them feels like a broken vase that they both keep wanting to swear is still whole.
I mentioned it in a post the other day, but I do wonder how much Tom’s loyalty is going to shift from Shiv to Logan. The way Logan made a point of remembering Tom’s sacrifice felt so loaded, and when matched with the fact that Shiv and Tom barely spoke about it at all - - I don’t know. I can see a serious conversation falling out of that as Tom finds another way to stay in the family (and to maintain the proximity to status and power he so craves) while also starting to separate from Shiv.
I still don’t think they’ll get divorced, but I think their marriage being one in name-only is definitely a possibility at this point, and whatever happens in Italy is certainly starting to feel like it’s going to only further compound Tom and Shiv’s fractures.
