The only let down about this photoshoot is that there aren’t MORE kimonos.
I must say that if there is only these two kimonos available I’d still let John wear the black one and Roger the salmon pink one It was like the two kimonos are tailor-made for their personalities
I just really want to know what the backstory to this shoot is. Did the whole band sit down and plan costumes in advance? Did Roger and John stake a claim on the kimonos? What message did they think these images convey?
Here you can see two ways they tried to make Freddie look taller: 1) sitting John on a chair, 2) taking away John’s shoes
#maybe even 3) hiding John's bent knees under a kimono #queue #4 queen boys #70s rt photo #70s fm photo #70s bm photo #70s jrd photo
There is a famous simile. ‘It’s just like riding a bike.’ It means that any skill, once acquired, is never forgotten. This would have been all well and good, except that John had forgotten, and the irony really wasn’t very funny at all now that he had a big scuff on the knee of his favourite pair of trousers.
In his defence, the last time he rode a bike, he had been a lot shorter, so he was still working out his balance. What’s more, a paperboy in Oadby faced a lot less peril than a courier in London. His cargo was more precious, the stakes a lot higher, and worst of all, if John didn’t do a good job, he risked disappointing you.
Wait. No. There was something worse, the thought of Roger and Freddie seeing him in his stupid helmet.
Silence isn’t always something someone actively searches for. Silence can be taken to mean multiple things to multiple people. It can mean peace of mind for someone, it can mean a somber moment, it can mean the lack of sound if you take it literally, and it can be one of the most nerve-wracking, anxiety inducing things.
Silence wasn’t something, say, Roger and Freddie were all too fond of. But to John and Brian, silence was sometimes welcome. They’d always been the more introverted ones, the ones who preferred to listen but not be in the limelight, the ones who were concerned about their studies as Queen took off. Brian was often described in reviews as the tall, thin guitarist with his head in the stars, and John was the aloof, quiet bassist who looked bored with the whole thing. These reviews couldn’t be further from the truth.
Brian’s head wasn’t in the stars, he was laser focused as he played that perhaps made him oblivious to those around him, but to the music? Not at all. John wasn’t aloof nor bored. He was simply doing what he had to, keep them on a steady, focused rhythm that should never, not even once deviate.
Maybe it’s wrong to fault the reporters, because they didn’t know the band like the four performers knew each other. Freddie wasn’t just the flamboyant showman who pranced around in silk. Roger wasn’t just the pretty, blond haired-blue eyed drummer who could be mistaken for a woman.
The band had more layers to them than anyone could imagine, their onstage appearance was a shield, a second stage wear, if you will. Something to protect them from the harsh reality, something that came down only when they felt less vulnerable, it was something only a few people were privy to.
Roger and Freddie were platonic soulmates, anyone with half a brain could see that. Roger and Brian, having been playing with one another for a few years before Queen knew each other rather instinctively. Freddie and Brian were different but worked extremely well with one another, they became close friends. Roger brought everyone out of his shell, he somewhat insisted that everyone had a good time, that’s what helped him bring John to the forefront of conversations in the early days, but John and Roger meshed well considering that they were the youngest. Freddie and John got along too, Freddie did do a lot when it came to getting John to contribute during recording sessions. He didn’t want john to feel left out.
But where all of them had found their footing around one another, Brian and John still weren’t sure of the other. But they still got along well, a smirk at Roger’s antics, a shared eye-roll when Freddie would harp on about how the song wasn’t perfect yet, but despite them not having come to a realization about where they fit into each other’s orbits, one thing was clear. Silence between them wasn’t awkward or jarring. It was comfortable.
Freddie had demanded that Brian host them for a band meeting that evening at seven, and in true fashion, John was the only one who arrived at seven on the dot. Brian let him in with a smile and a “You’re on time.” Freddie and Roger were nowhere to be seen. Five past seven, quarter past seven, half past seven. No Freddie and Roger. John grinned to himself as he flicked through the book Brian had left on the small table squeezed into his little living room that was a part of his bedsit. Brian had taken the opportunity to finish up some writing he had pending for his thesis as they waited for their missing bandmates to arrive.
The book that John found was rather interesting, so he turned back all the way to page one and began to read. Brian looked over at John from where he was sitting and annotating his text as he simultaneously scribbled into a notebook. When you caught John unaware, it was a bit of a reality check. John was so intent on being independent that you almost forgot that he was just twenty-one. He looked much younger when he read, slept or was tired. John was an enigma, he wasn’t that easy to read. Brian smiled and turned his attention back to his work.
Brian was one of the smartest people that John had ever come across, he was working on a doctoral thesis, something worthy of awe in the academic world. John often wondered whether Freddie and Roger ever actually realized the gravity and depth of Brian’s research. Not because he thought they were stupid, they weren’t. But to the two of them, music was far more important. Not to say Brian was any less passionate about music, it’s just he was passionate about both. Plus, Brian had the added burden of his parents, more specifically his father, being very keen on him having a PhD.
Brian shut his books and headed over to the kitchen to make some tea. He brought the mug over to John who raised an eyebrow in surprise but took it gladly, smiling at Brian as he did. Brian hadn’t really noticed John’s smile in such close quarters. It was rather sweet how the corners of his eyes crinkled as he smiled and the way his nose wrinkled just a small bit. He hoped John would smile more. He looked nice.
John found it interesting how Brian just brought him tea without having to ask him, they might not be the closest but they understood each other rather well. For John could see when Brian was getting a bit too stuck in his thoughts and he’d nudge Roger lightly so that he could pull Brian out of that spiral. John knew he and Brian were different but also similar, he also knew that the two of them could really hurt one another if they wanted. He never wanted that.
Brian brought his own mug of tea back to the living room and curled up in the arm chair, as well as his gangly limbs would allow him to and settled down to read some more of his text.
The clock on the wall ticked on, the sound amplified in the silence. Every rustle of a page was heard loud and clear, every slurp of tea, every little movement.
It was just about five past eight when the door burst open and in trooped Freddie and Roger. Who brought with them conversation that filled the noise, Brian and John exchanged sly smiles before turning their attention to their extremely tardy bandmates.
As Roger rambled on about the upcoming gig and what they should and shouldn’t do during the gig, Freddie nodding away in agreement with what Roger said. John looked up to see Brian looking at him, Brian grinned and winked at John who rolled his eyes good-naturedly at Roger and quirked a smile when Brian chuckled softly.
Silence wasn’t always something that was uncomfortable. With the right person, silence could be the most comfortable thing.
