A few days back on AO3 I found an unfinished, two chapter spideypool fanfic that was cute and had lots of potential and was also last updated two years ago. Two whole years! And it had only three comments, all of which on chapter one, none on chapter two. I enjoyed the fanfic, despite it being far, FAR from being finished and the chance of it ever updating again anytime soon was just about zero. So you know what I did?

I wrote a damn comment. On chapter two.

And I made sure that fucker was long and had a small theory of where I think the author would take the fanfic in the future. I let the person behind the fic know that I friggin LOVED the two chapters I got to read! That I would LOVE to see more! That I’d jump out of my skin in happiness and virtually hug them half to death if I saw that they updated it.

Let me remind you this fic wasn’t updated in two YEARS! I was the first to comment on it in a year. And the first to comment on chapter two! And you know what happened today?

I got a reply.

From the author of the fanfic.
And the author said how I gave them life for a project they had loved (still did) and that they were now working on a third chapter.
After two YEARS of not updating. Of not writing. And it makes me so friggin happy seeing what I did. What I caused.

With a single. Damn. Comment.

All that it took for me was to think a bit about what I wanted to tell the author and the comment it. All it took was one comment. And suddenly this person was inspired to continue a fanfic they had abandoned for TWO YEARS!!

I couldn’t be happier. I couldn’t be more proud.

Comment on people’s fanfics. No matter how few chapters there are. No matter how many years have passed since their last update. Comment. You like a fanfic? Comment on it. It’s that easy.

I really can’t explain how true this is. Comments are the reason my story got prioritized, finished, and then continued into a little series. As an author, I feel so inspired to write for everyone who comments. Even if a chapter takes me forever to write, I promise I’m thinking about you guys every time I sit down to type. Or every time I’m struggling to find motivation. It’s not even guilt that I feel it’s like… support. Like if me falling into a depressive episode and taking forever to update is the equivalent of falling into a river, then comments are like offering your hand to help me out. Eventually I would have pulled my soggy, wet self out of that river myself, but gosh is it easier when someone is there to help.

I’m not here to bully you into commenting. Ultimately I want writers to write for themselves (meaning you shouldn’t only be in it for the validation). But here’s the thing, most of us do want to write, that’s why we started those stories!! It just becomes “eh, I’ll probably get to it eventually. Not like anyone is waiting for it.” But if we know it’s exciting for others to read, then it becomes, “Oh man, even if it takes me a little bit of time, I can’t wait to share my next idea with the readers!” Between those, which chapter do you think is going to get an update sooner/ever? So whether you think it does or not, I’m here to tell you your comments have power. A lot of power. (You might also make some friends, like I did!)

I recently learnt that executive dysfunction can be broken down into two main categories: anxiety that your attempt won’t be satisfactory, or confusion about where to start or how to break it down into steps. As much as we feel bad about it, it’s extremely important to remember that it is NOT laziness and we in fact shouldn’t feel bad.

Me, who lived in a time where we’d set up Yahoo! geocities blogs and angelfire blogs because we want to post and share fanfiction while also living with the fear of possibly getting sued because we’re only 13 yr olds who liked a thing way too much and dont know what copyright is: I did not take care of my mental health to see you kids parrot this shit to my face.

This is honestly really frustrating.

Fanfiction is an interesting piece of media. It’s something where you can both improve your skills as a writer and get a whole fandom to engage as a writer. There are so many fanfic writers that have dared to explore and go beyond the original works, and in a way, made the series better and more interesting for me to explore.

Fanfics are a good way to fix what you think was wrong in the series. Game of thrones and Star wars fanfics are perhaps the best examples I can think of.

It’s also a place where you can write about your favourite ships, or work on your favourite headcanons. A place where you can literally write anything that you want to.

And I think that’s interesting.

Yet now, people keep insulting and mocking fanfiction. This has happened before, don’t get me wrong, but recently, it feels like everyone has jumped on the hate wagon. On tiktok you have this whole battle between ao3 and wattpad, and on here, you have comments like the one above, saying that if your read on ao3, you should kill yourself.

Now there are problems and issues with every site, I know that. But assuming that everyone who goes onto ao3 is a paedophile is quite frankly disgusting. Using that sort of rhetoric is disgusting. Essentially relegating all fanfiction on that site to ‘child porn’ is sickening. Also, it’s ironic that for how 'woke’ you all seem to be, you still think it’s alright to tell people to kill themselves. The Internet is truly an awful place indeed.

I grew up in a time where, though I didn’t publish any fanfiction of my own until I was in my mid-teens, I still saw the disclaimers from what I saw as 'earlier’ fanfiction - due to not wanting to get sued. The fact that most people nowadays don’t use it anymore is a testament to how far it has grown. Now you don’t have to look at certain websites for specific fandoms (such as, I think mugglenet for Harry Potter?), instead you can just go onto a fanfiction website and then filter the fanfics to your désired one. I think out of tue three major fanfic websites, ao3 is actually the best at this.

Now I understand that ao3 has its issues. And I’m not saying that they don’t need to be fixed. But attacking people who read on ao3 and are upset over people writing whole ass fanfics over the tags is not the way to go about it. I also understand that wattpad and ff.net have their issues too, but attacking people for reading fanfiction - on tumblr of all places - is just stupid and harmful

Though personally, I believe Wattpad has its own value, not as an alternative for fanfiction but for juvenile fiction (creative works written by 15 years and below) where they have easier access to publication.

I have a wattpad account and I find the adjustable copyright options interesting in there. I haven’t published anything in there yet but I aim to.

Y’know, for all the flaws in the 90s Everyone Online Is A Predator Never Say Anything model, it was infinitely safer for kids than the current “your online friends are completely safe and trustworthy, but outsiders are inherently suspicious” model.

Still waiting for the “Most people are basically honest, but people who want to hurt you are really good at pretending to be friendly, so be open and kind but careful” model to take hold.

Personally I believe it would do a lot of good if we stopped teaching kids about dangerous people and taught them to identify dangerous behavior instead.

It’s a good rule of thumb for life in general to be suspicious of anyone who says “People inside this group are all safe, but people OUTSIDE this group all want to hurt you”.

in Finland, it is illegal to kill a bear when it’s hibernating. If you ask a hunter why that is, a number of them will tell you it’s wrong simply because it is the law, and they don’t make a distinction between what is right, and what is legal. Most people like that are perfectly normal, decent and respectable people, just like the rest of us.

 But if you ask people who think about things, the answer is vague. Killing a hibernating bear would just feel… impolite? You can’t fucking shoot a man when he’s sleeping, that’s just fucking rude. It’s just not the right thing to do.

 Long before hunting laws were established in Finland, you couldn’t kill a sleeping bear, and what commands you is something older than law: tradition. Even at a time when hunting was a matter of life and death, and a bear fighting for its life is mainly a matter of death, you just didn’t kill a hibernating bear, you have to wake it up first. Hunters risked their lives, the lives of their brothers and everyone in the hunting party, who were friends, family and men that they loved, to give the bear a fighting chance.

 In the modern time, the hunting season of bears is in the summer, for the warmest summer months. There are many reasons for why they are allowed to tread safely in autumn and to sleep in peace through the cold months, almost all of which are rational and scientific, and do not touch the old traditions.
