Hypnosis Mic - Before the Battle - Dawn of Divisions - Chapter 5, Part 3
<< Previous Next >>
From the case of arb which celebrates 1.5 years i heard that many japanese rhythm games also celebrate it. is that the thing to do in japan?
I don’t pay much attention to mobile games, but I have seen other games celebrate their anniversaries. This doesn’t seem atypical.
hi, just a quick question, i frequently see people call hifumi "hifumin" but i don't recall any other characters calling him that... is this just a fandom thing, or does he refer to himself as hifumin, or am i just missing something?
He calls himself Hifumin. The “n” sound is considered to be cute in Japanese, so adding “n” to the end of names makes for cute nicknames.
I believe you've been asked this before, and that you had a link for the explanation somewhere in your blog (which I couldn't find), but why is it that uploading your translations to other sites is forbidden?
Two main reasons: editing rights and removal rights.
I reserve the right to go back and make edits to chapters whenever I want to. This is mainly used to fix typos and other minor errors, but it also allows me to change wordings on older chapters if they reappear as flashbacks in later chapters. For example, for FP/M+ 5, I tweaked the wording on a line of Gentarou’s in FP/M 13 to better support a point being made in the later chapter. Since Tumblr has an edit feature, I can do this easily. I can’t edit manga on other websites.
Similarly, I reserve the right to remove the manga if worst comes to worst. I don’t have any plans of doing so right now, but were the manga to be licensed in English, I issued a DMCA takedown, or the status of the manga to in some way threaten my career, I would remove the manga from this blog and/or delete the blog altogether with prior warning. If the manga is still present on many other websites that I have no control over, then I could still face legal or career consequences.
Additionally, common courtesy across the English-speaking portion of the internet says that reposting someone’s work is considered rude. I ask that you please give me that courtesy so I can ensure my ability to edit, remove, and properly credit my team.
Hi, Slug! I’ve been seeing a lot of people frustrated about the fact that Honobono doesn’t have an official design and making headcanons about wha she would look like, and I was wondering what’s your headcanon about her design/appearance?
We have seen her, albeit not her face, in Hifumi’s flashbacks in FP/M+ 8 (which we’re on track to have up probably early or mid next month). She looks like a fairly average nondescript anime girl, haha. To me, I think her lack of concrete appearance is less to frustrate viewers and/or any negative intention and more to create suspense. The more she remains unknown, the more frightened of her the audience becomes and the more villainous she seems.
hiii! im the one who asked ab the division team’s car ride hahaha i love the way you picture what the other teams would be like during a long ass car ride 😂 also i got another random stupid thought so i rlly like to know: if all 6 division leaders were in a room, who do you think would come out first in tears?
Juushi. With no Kuukou around to distract him, he’d definitely find the time to wander into Hitoya’s office and tearfully come out as some form of LGBT+.
Hey slug! This might sound stupid but in TDD chapter 3 part 4, One of the rebels mentioned that Ramuda is one of the Chuoku's dog. I don't know how and when he knew about it, I wanna ask if you have any idea how
[Sorry for my bad grammar, I'm still bad at English :'))]
Don’t worry! Your English was easy to understand. I know the scene you’re talking about, and I wonder about that too. My best guess is that it has to do with Ramuda have a special, personalized mic. Since Hypnosis Mics are a relatively new invention at that point in time, perhaps very few people apart from those affiliated with the Japanese government are able to have specialized mics.
You like TWEWY... please tell me you don't like J///oshN///eku 😧😟
I cannot stress enough how utterly uninterested I am in engaging in whatever ship drama this may be.
TWEWY spoiler below
But given my track record, are you really surprised that I’d be interested in a dynamic ft.
Sorry, but all my major ships fall into this same pattern, so… I don’t know what to tell you. I find their dynamic really, really fun to examine and enjoy some romantic content as a part of that.
For whatever reason that you find it objectionable, I simply ask that we all be civil about it. It’s not likely to come up much here unless people mention TWEWY to me.
Thanks for you and your team hardwork recently. I just have one question to ask: When did Dice know his mother is Otome? I cannot find any info about this in drama tracks or manga.
Thank you and have a nice day!
I’m sorry, I didn’t respond to this message the first time it came in because I don’t know either. It isn’t in the manga, and I don’t listen to the drama tracks or know them very well. If you can’t find it, it may not have been released in canon yet.
Edit: I don’t believe this answers your question exactly, but in the hopes that it does, I will paste in a response from a different anon.
This one’s for the previous anon if it’s okay to send here
“The wind comes first to the house before the storm” limited drama track where otome tells her backstory to ichijiku
“catch us if you can” fling posse drama track
Hey, about the last ask, sorry about that. I didn’t know about your policies & now I regret it.
I apologize for making you feel bad. It isn’t a matter of policy, but I wanted to address it publicly because we’ve received quite a few messages about various ships being canon vs non-canon. Like I said, we can’t possibly answer that since we’re not in charge of this. I would simply rather avoid having to repeat this same response whenever these questions come in if I can help it.
This doesn't have much to do with hypmic, but- I just recently learned that you've read Pokespe! Who's your favorite Dexholder and why?
Oof, haha. This is actually a challenging question to answer because I first read Pokemon Adventures/Pokespe during my teenage years when my psychosis (I have had schizophrenia since I was a little kid) was especially strong, and as such Pokemon as a whole and Pokemon Adventures in particular did feature into it. I need to disentangle my personal feelings and experiences from my opinion of the series as a piece of media.
Even then, I think my answer is Silver. I really enjoy the narrative the story pushes for him, namely that family is something of your own choosing (see his sibling-like friendship with Green) and that neither past mistakes nor the circumstances of your birth need to define you. Even little edgelord children can grow up to have happy lives, haha. I like Green a lot for similar reasons and admire her strength. The scene where she faces down her trauma and refuses to let it overwhelm her in the G/S/C arc is one of my favorites.
But I also like Ruby quite a bit too for vastly different reasons. All the Dexholders have some sort of negative qualities and things they need to work on, but I like how Ruby starts off as this rude, self-centered little shit - whereupon the narration holds him to the consequences of all of his actions. Most of the other Dex holders learn through positive interactions with each other, but I love how the narration holds him accountable and says, “You’re fucking up. You need to do better, and here’s what went wrong because you only cared about yourself.” It’s a pretty fitting message for the R/S arc with its strong environmentalist themes, and it makes Ruby’s redemption feel much more satisfying to me. On a completely different note, I love his hat to death. I have a Ruby hat which I wear just about whenever I can.
At the end of the day, I have such a soft spot for all of the Dexholders. They’re really sweet kids, and Pokemon Adventures is such a fun, charming little story.
Hi, I’m a different person. Quick question, did Nemu saw Ichiro as just a FRIEND in the Dirty Dog era?
There are no confirmations of relationships being strictly platonic or strictly romantic between any major cast members. It is purposefully designed to be open to interpretation.
Additionally, since some of my team members, other unrelated translators, and I keep receiving messages both private and otherwise about this concern, please remember that none of us work on the series in an official capacity, and even if we did, we could not give a definitive answer on character relationship status. I understand you have concerns for your rival ship (whether character shipping or self-shipping) but please do not take out your shipping anxieties on us, because we can’t possibly have an answer for you.
Hello, may I ask, if you happen to know the car types/models that each character owns?
It's ok if not.
I don’t know the first thing about cars of any sort, let alone fictional cars. About all I can say is that they have four wheels. Sorry.
Hi slug! Kind of similar to the ask about the each division's driving! So for MTC we've only ever seen Jyuto driving, which makes sense considering he's probably the most sensible of the three on the road. But in the latest Spotify Hypnosis Wave podcast it's stated that Samatoki and Rio do know how to drive, but Jyuto drives them all anyway bc he "doesn't like being in the passenger's seat" of cars. (1/3)
(His problem clearly isn’t Only with Samatoki/Rio’s reckless driving as he states that as a separate issue). So, do you think this reluctance to be in the passenger’s seat could be at all related to his parents’ death in a car crash, and maybe now he feels the need to be in control whenever he’s in a car/he doesn’t want to relive that scenario, assuming he was there when it happened (though it’s never been explicitly stated if he was in the car or not iirc)? (2/3)
I was wondering what you think of my theory and if it seems at all plausible to you :P (If it’s not already clear, I like to make theories for Jyuto and his backstory considering it feels like we know so little about him in canon, even now.) Thanks! (3/3)
Oh shit, I LOVE this idea! I don’t know if we have enough evidence yet to really point one way or the other, but this feels very, very plausible, and I’ll keep this in mind moving forward.
I love your analysis so much, they're so in depth and it feels like it makes me understand the characters more (especially last night, I was reading your notes on the most previous chapter). If you had any advice to analyzing characters/story into a deeper level, what would you give?
Thank you! Literary analysis is mostly a process of pattern recognition. This is probably much easier for me than the average casual reader because, by virtue of having to essentially rewrite the entire series and consciously choose how to phrase every line and character interaction, I am forced to engage with the text repeatedly on a deeper level. But you can also notice patterns within the illustrations themselves. Once you see a pattern, you should question yourself, “If this pattern is intentional, what could the author(s) intend by it? How does it relate to other patterns? What new information does this pattern suggest (even unintentionally) about the character/themes/story/etc? How is this pattern framed, and how is it supported by other elements of the work such as illustrations?” These questions and their answers form the analysis process. As you notice the pattern elsewhere, don’t be afraid to revise your answers or throw out answers you no longer think are supported by the text.
Hi there, slug👋 I want to ask, how long does it takes for the new chapter (raw version) to be published? Thank you and please stay safe to you and your teams (Sorry if this comes out weird to you. My English becomes rusty since I graduated from high school last year 😅😅🙏)
By the raw version, do you mean the Japanese chapters? They come out once a month. Every month, I note the month’s upcoming releases on the monthly status update.
Why does rio's protype hypnosis mic design different in bb/mtc to bb/mtc+? Is there an error or is it due to the adaptation?
I’m sorry, I have no more access to back end information than you do. I have no way of knowing this.
Hello slug! Thank you and your team for all of your hard work! This has been bothering me for a while: where were jakurai and Hitoya born? Did one of them move to Shinjuku or Nagoya later? Same thing with the Yamada brothers and Rei. I hope you understand what I mean. Thank you!
Sorry, I have no more information about this than you do.
Have you ever cosplayed a Hypmic character before? I tried to cosplay Sasara once, but I'm a size L and the only suit of his I could find was a comedium. (Ba dum tss!)
AY YO. Good one!
Yes, I have a TDD Ramuda cosplay. I wore it to a con once, but more importantly, it’s good for making shitposts. I have several more I want to make at one point if I can wrestle my paranoia into submission.
i apologize if you’ve answered something like this before, but are there any medias you enjoy besides hypmic?
I’m very into reading, and I like video games when I have the time and energy to play them. Nowadays, I’m not that big into a lot of anime/manga/Japanese pop culture fandom-esque things, but some things I do go fucking nuts over:
Recently I’ve had a weirdly large amount of free time and have been playing a lot (for me, a lot is like 3 hours a week) of Nier:Automata. I’ve been interested in the Nier series for a while, so I’m glad that Automata is just as fun to play and exciting to explore as I had hoped.
hiiii slug! just a random thought that came to mind at 4am lol~ if you were to go on a 10-hour drive, which division team would you like to go on a ride with? and who do you think will be the driver?? sorry if it sounds weird hahaha
btw thank you and your team for all the hard work yall put on the manga! we really appreciate it! ❤️
10 hours is a bit… much… but since I can’t drive, car rides are a special treat for me. I feel like a dog. You offer me a ride somewhere, and I’ll flip out in sheer excitement. So a road trip sounds like it’d be really fun. I’m probably going to say Matenrou with Jakurai driving, but here’s my thought process behind this.
Buster Bros: No offense to any teenage boys reading this, but I would rather die than be trapped in a car for 10 hours with 3 teenage boys, 2 of whom can’t get along.
Mad Trigger Crew: I assume Juuto is driving, but he’s an emotional driver. I would fear for my life. Plus, Samatoki smokes in cars without even rolling down the damn windows. Helllllll no.
Fling Posse: I think one of them can drive, but I don’t know which one. Now listen… they trust each other, right. And that’s all well and good. But I’m a random stranger, and I do not trust a SINGLE one of them to successfully drive a car for 10 hours.
Matenrou: Jakurai seems like a really safe driver. He doesn’t even let Ramuda distract him from driving, and he has hands free calling enabled. Plus, his car is large and comfortable looking. It is designed to carry people on long road trips. Hifumi might be a bit much to have in close quarters for 10 hours, but honestly? It might not be that bad. If Doppo goes to sleep (as he should, he needs the rest), he’d likely drop the Hifumin act anyway and then just make pleasant chitchat. You know they’re listening to some chill-ass music the whole way too. Pleasant vibes. Homemade snacks courtesy of Hifumi in a cooler in the back. Doppo getting a chance to relax for a change. This is really the most manageable one.
Dotsuitare Hompo: Sorry, Rei, my mother taught me not to get into cars with strange men who want to steal my money. Additionally, being in a car with Sasara and Roshou for 10 hours might be fatal.
Bad Ass Temple: If this was not a 10 hour trip, I’d actually choose this car (operating with the assumption that Hitoya is driving. If either one of the other two attempt to take the driver’s seat, you’d have to pry me out of Jakurai’s mom van with a crowbar). Juushi would probably play his vkei music, which seems fun, and he’d sing along too. Kuukou probably has some bizarre music taste that would appear somewhere around hour 4, but I feel like I’d dig whatever he’s into as well. Hitoya seems like he’d be a good driver and simply reeks of “I am a long-suffering dad taking my asshole children to Disneyland” energy, but he also seems like he’d be a great conversationalist. Kuukou would be hella fun to hang out with too. Seriously, this all just sounds like a good time. My concern is that I don’t think Kuukou can sit still for 10 hours, and I fear that if I fall asleep midway he’s going to, like… fart on me or something. You know? Isn’t this a valid concern?
On twitter you were saying in a Jakurai thread how part of his helping people is almost like a coping mechanism and self denying his own problems. Do you thinks that’s like a parallel with how Ramuda subconsciously seems like he genuinely likes helping people?
Ooh, that’s a super interesting thought… I’ve been turning this around in the back of my mind for a couple days since this message first arrived.
I think they both like doing things for other people but sometimes have certain things standing in their way, like Ramuda neglecting other people’s well being when his life is threatened or Jakurai using offers to help to an unnecessary extent. In some sense, I think their character arcs may lead them to switch places. Ramuda seems to be on a trajectory to care for other people more (which in turn helps himself on a personal level more) while Jakurai is starting to take steps to prioritize himself and the people he cares for (Yotsutsuji, Hifumi and Doppo) even if it may impact other people. I’d like to see them both overcome their personal issues and loneliness as the story continues.
hi! i couldnt see if you answered this somewhere but i was wondering why you romanize certain names like juushi or chuuouku while the english fanbase seems to have set spellings for them. very curious bc im rereading the mangas again and have always wondered this with respect to other fandoms too !
Different translators prefer different romanization styles based on what makes the most sense to them and/or what is most aesthetically pleasing. There is no one correct style. In my case, I wasn’t aware when I began that Hypmic had an official romanization style and didn’t put much thought into it, so I used my default style. In terms of the manga itself, my first typesetter then changed a few names depending on how he thought official names should be spelled… and at this point our hands are somewhat tied by precedent. We do have an official romanization standard, but it’s kind of weird. For example, double vowels are written in all side character names and in all main character first names (but not surnames - see Jinguuji) EXCEPT if the main character was first introduced in the manga, like Kuukou. It’s a bit weird, and if I had more foresight, I wouldn’t have done it this way, but alas… precedent! At this stage, it’s much too hard to go back and edit every single chapter, and I would rather be consistent and somewhat odd-looking than randomly changing partway through.
Are prototype mics considered as illegal mics? I'm sorry I'm so confused
I have no more idea than you do.
Monthly status update for August/September. I missed last month, but we’re getting back into the swing of things now!

hi slug ! i just wanted to ask about your response to the question that asked you about your favourite and least favourite thing about Jakurai. This might be too personal, but why do you hate the people who help others that didn't ask for it? The newest chapters on Jakurai and Hitoya covered a range of sensitive topics. I wanted to ask you why you said you would hate Jakurai if he were real, but he is purposefully portrayed as "a good man" who does things for others and is humble about it. he does have a past, and I understand that. he has a lot of hidden emotions underneath what he often portrays.. do you think the author will eventually have him snap and break down? i think perhaps ramuda and jakurai are very similar in the sense that they are hiding something very critical about themselves, maybe that's why they had gotten so close. anyways i apologize for the rants and the questions (don't answer them if you feel uncomfortable to) love you and your teams work! - a person who is hyperfixated on jakurai :)
Oh, I think that Jakurai is objectively a good person and that wanting to help others is a good trait. My issues with it are just that - flaws in my own personality I’m working to undo. They stem from trust issues, and I generally feel uncomfortable when people do things for me. It makes me feel vulnerable or not in control of myself, and that’s an unsafe feeling which can lead to anger. I try to avoid acting on that irrational anger since I understand it’s only misdirected fear, so I don’t mistreat people like that or anything. I do tend to avoid them, though, because I don’t like feeling that anger.
Anyway, that aside… I don’t know exactly where they’re going to take Jakurai. I’m not betting on a total breakdown so much as a… gentle relaxation of his standards as he learns to open up and trust others more. Since he’s a protagonist, I don’t think they would go such a vindictive route that would break him down in main canon, but it’s always possible they’ll make him take steps back before he can move forward.
What you said is a large reason why I find the Jakurai and Ramuda dynamic really interesting. They both deal with enormous, challenging personal issues by… not dealing with them. They’re both an odd combination of living for the sake of other people and repressing their true selves and desires. Jakurai handles it a lot better than Ramuda does, but they both need to grow a lot in the long term to be happier imo.
