↳ What were the odds of Yoongi finding him? He gulped hard, slowly looking up at the human as he pulled his hood off. He could see where he had bitten him, blood running down his hand and Jungkook felt guilt washing over him. Yoongi had always been nice to him and sometimes he wondered if he could slip him a note or give him a message. So much had changed. And Jungkook was so scared.
Jungkook
loved to be outside, watching the sun set at the horizon and basking in the
last sun rays until Yoongi called for him. Slowly but surely, it had gotten a
little colder as time had passed, Jimin was already gone and so Yoongi made
Jungkook come inside so that he wouldn’t catch a cold. He didn’t know how
sensitive Jungkook was to the cold, but he was better safe than sorry.

The
younger followed his call easily, jumping up on the couch, grabbing the blanket
to wrap himself in it and getting comfortable lying down and his head on
Yoongi’s lap. He felt the warmth of the hybrid seeping through his thigh where
the younger had placed his head. He had gotten so used to the other cuddling up
against him without minding any kind of personal space that he didn’t even
flinch anymore whenever Jungkook touched him like that.
“I like Jimin,” Jungkook said with his eyes
closed when Yoongi mindlessly began to soothe over his ears. Not even the tv
interested him, whenever the human played with his hair or scratched his ears.
He loved it! “He was really kind towards me.” Jungkook opened his eyes to look
up at him. “Jimin really seems to know you, too, right? He’s your best friend?”
“I’m happy to hear that. I’m very proud of you that you’re taking the courage to
make new friends.” He gently scratched at an especially soft spot right behind
Jungkook ears that made the younger go lax sometimes or sigh really cutely. At
first glance one might think that Jungkook was getting more out of this than he
did, but the truth was he enjoyed this just as much. “Yeah, we know each other
pretty well.” He felt that there was a question lingering on Jungkook’s mind
behind this, but he waited until the other would speak it out for himself.
“I
just…I wanted to ask you something. Jimin said that…and I’m not sure if I
understood it right and I wanted to ask you for a long time now…” Jungkook was
stumbling over his words, biting his lip nervously. It felt weird to lay down
while he was asking a serious question, so Jungkook sat up to look at Yoongi.
“When you first took me here, you said it would be temporary…until we knew what
to do and…I’ve been here for a while now and I love it here. I really do! I
love helping you and spending the time with you. And so, I asked if Jimin
knew…if you told him something about my stay…and he said that you wouldn’t want
me to leave.” Jungkook licked his lips in a nervous habit. “Because you like me
a lot. W-what does he mean?”
“Oh,
Jungkookie, I’m so sorry!” Yoongi felt guilty immediately. Had Jungkook been
scared that Yoongi would give him away? Was that the reason he had been so
sweet to him, because he wanted to show that he would be nice to live with? “I
really didn’t mean to keep you waiting and guessing, of course you can stay! In
the beginning I just wasn’t sure if the police would come looking for you and I
would need to get you somewhere safe - also we barely knew each other, and I
had no idea if it would work with us two living together just like that.
However as soon as you settled, and I realized that no one was actively
searching for you it was clear that you could stay. I should have been clearer
about it. I hope you didn’t worry too much?” He gave Jungkook a smile and then
quickly answered his second question, feeling a little put on the spot. “Of
course, I like you a lot. You’re the cutest pika I’ve ever seen.”
“So, you like
me like a human likes his pika?” Jungkook could feel his heart drop. For a
moment he thought he could be fine with just being a cute, likeable Pika to
Yoongi but then Jungkook would lie to himself.
“I don’t know…” He had a
feeling that they were talking about two different things here because the way
Jungkook’s smile had faded didn’t really fit what he had just said. “How does a
human like his pika? How… how would you like me to …like you?”
Jungkook
chewed on his bottom lip, shrugging his shoulders, because he had no idea to
explain it. “I just don’t understand this all.” He pointed to the tv, where a
drama was playing. He had watched a bunch of them, trying to understand the
different types of love but it was too dramatic and Jungkook still couldn’t
figure out how it would feel. “I…I want you to really like me, I think. H-how
do I know how much?”
Yoongi cocked his head. He remembered how Jimin had told
him that he should talk to Jungkook about his feelings but there was also the
fear of ruining the younger’s trust in case it would be too much for him to
handle. Therefore, he spoke very carefully and gently. “You can always ask me
questions if you don’t understand something, no matter the topic.“ He waited
until Jungkook nodded in understanding before he continued. “So, you don’t
understand why those people act like they do in the tv? You shouldn’t believe
every little detail that they show there because not everything applies to
everyone but overall, the people in those kinds of dramas act like they do
because they are in love. Do you know what that means?” He wanted to clarify
first before answering anything else.
“Of course, I know what love means.”
Jungkook said with a pout, “It’s when a human loves another human so much they
marry.” All of his knowledge, the pika had from books and magazines. “I just
don’t get what it feels like. What’s the differences…in this drama, this boy…”
He pointed at one of the characters, “He loves the girl, but she says she only
likes him. How does she know?”
“Ah, I see…” Yoongi bit his lip, contemplating
how to explain. “That’s not so easy, actually. Feelings are not like…things,
they are fluid. When you see a carrot, you know it is a carrot and nothing
else. With Love… if you like someone really, really much it can be a kind of
love and some people fall in love with someone that they don’t even know enough
to like. There are also lots of different kinds of ‘love’. When I say I love my
velvet cushion then I don’t mean I want to marry it. I also love Jimin in a
way, a friendly way, meaning that I appreciate him a lot and he’s a person
that’s really close to my heart. I have also been in relationships with people.
I didn’t really want to marry them because I think that marriage is optional,
but I did want to spend my life with them. Sadly, love isn’t always a guarantee
for things to work out. Does that answer your questions?”
“Oh,” Jungkook
contemplated for a moment, wondering if Yoongi loved him the same way Jimin did
or if there was more… “And how do I know? How do I know if I love someone, or
someone is in love with me?”
“Those are two different things. You know if you
love someone if you listen to your heart and it just feels… right. You want
to be around them and talk to them and be with them and you feel… nice when
they are close. Like… better than with anyone else. Recognizing love can be a
little more difficult because not everyone shows their love in the same way.
There’s something called ‘love language’ actually because it can be so
different that it seems like completely different languages. For example, one
might show his love by giving you lots of attention and spending all his time
with you. Someone else might be more vocal, encouraging you a lot, telling you
how much they love you, giving you support and affirmation. Others might give
you gifts or do a lot of things with you. And there’s also the possibility that
they want to get very…physical with you. Do you know what I mean?”
“To sleep
with someone, yeah…” Jungkook had read about it, too. “Or just to kiss, right?
That’s something physical, too. Have you used love language before, too?” He
bit his lip, cheeks blushing. “I mean with humans. Your other humans that you
loved? How was it different to Jimin? You never loved him, right? He is just a
friend?” Jungkook pulled the blanket in a little more, placing it softly over
Yoongi’s lap to keep him from getting cold because he was too excited to listen
right now then to go back and cuddle.
He was relieved to hear that Jungkook had
some basic knowledge because it made explaining a lot easier. “Yeah, kissing
counts just as much. You can give friends little kisses as well, on the cheek
or the forehead but kisses on the mouth are mostly reserved for people you want
to be with in a different way.” He definitely would not go into the details of
one night stands and casual sex because he didn’t want to overwhelm the other
and they could talk about that specific chapter if it ever came up “I have done
all of the things I mentioned before with my partners. You don’t have to stick
to just one, you can use whatever feels right for the both of you. There are
things that come to people more naturally than others though.” He shook his
head. “No, Jimin and I have never been together like that. I love him as a
friend, that has never been different. Why are you asking that? Are you afraid
that someone else wants to move in with me and take your place? Or that I would
forget about you if someone fell in love with me? That won’t happen. You will
always have a place with me Jungkook, no matter what.”
Jungkook’s smile was
warm. He believed his words because they sounded so sincere. He shook his head
at his question. Jungkook wasn’t scared. Instead, he was a little more
confident and there was something tingling inside of him, his instincts kicking
in. Yoongi had talked about love languages and how different they felt to each
and everyone. There was only one more question burning on his mind. “D-do you think…”
He hesitated, averting his gaze shyly, “That it’s possible for…for hybrids to
love humans and the other way around? I know it’s not allowed but…is it
possible? I heard someone say that it’s not possible but i’m…not really
sure…”
“Of course, that’s possible! I don’t know what on earth should prevent
that. I can understand that some people are worried because of those stories
where the kids of those pairs got only half the hybrid traits and had health
issues but honestly, the likelihood of that happening is the same as other
health issues children can inherit from their parents.” He awkwardly looked
away, “But back to what you asked: Yes, I think it is absolutely possible and
not worth any less than love between two regular humans.”
The younger’s smile
grew even brighter. “You’re right.” He bit his lip, trying to hide the blush on
his cheeks as he turned away from Yoongi and shifted on the couch again so he
could lay back down. “I’m so glad I have you.” Jungkook mumbled, snuggling
closer to his human, feeling his heart skip a beat.
“Yeah, me too. I would have
wished that we met under better circumstances but nonetheless I’m really happy
I have you with me.” He allowed himself to put his arm around Jungkook, telling
himself that the younger certainly didn’t know that it could be interpreted
like ‘making a move on him’ so it was still okay. As long as Jungkook didn’t
know about his feelings skin ship was absolutely fine. He just hoped that all
his sudden questions about love and Jimin’s teasing meant that he had given
himself away somehow…
Jungkook loved their cuddle movie nights and usually he
fell asleep pretty soon but tonight, he was too excited. The answers Yoongi had
given him were swirling around in his mind, so when they were lying in bed, he was
still lying there eyes wide open while Yoongi was softly snoring beside him.
What was his own love language as Yoongi called it? How could he show Yoongi
that he liked him? He wanted to do something for him that Yoongi would
recognize and yet, wouldn’t be too much. He didn’t want to overwhelm him
either.
…
The younger still found no perfect answer the next morning, when he
helped load Yoongi’s truck with boxes that he’d bring to some local markets.
“When will you be back?” Jungkook asked curiously, taking three boxes at once
easily to push them into the trunk.
“It will be at least four hours before I
can catch a break. Maybe I’ll stay a bit longer again but I’ll definitely call
you, so you don’t have to worry. There is some vegetable soup for you in the fridge
if you want to eat that for lunch or you can take whatever else you need, as
usual.” He had said it before but would say it again until Jungkook truly
believed him because he felt like the other still didn’t dare to eat more than
raw vegetables from the garden whenever he wasn’t around.
“That’s fine,”
Jungkook said with confidence, hugging Yoongi tight and nuzzling his nose along
his cheek for a moment before letting him go. “Drive safe, please.” He took a
step away from the vehicle, when Yoongi still looked at him with concern. “Go!
I’m fine. I know where everything is, and I won’t definitely starve!” And it would give him enough time to think
about something to do for Yoongi.
“Call me if anything happens okay? And don’t
open the door for anyone but Jimin!” Again, something he had told Jungkook
before but the thought of coming home to Jungkook having been taken by someone
still scared him. Whenever the feeling got too strong he rubbed over the small
mark on his hand from where Jungkook had bitten him, reminding himself that
Jungkook could fight for himself if he needed to.
Jungkook walked back inside
the empty house and sighed deeply. He had a few hours until Yoongi would be
back and absolutely no idea what to do. The only thing he knew was that he wanted
to show him how much he adored him. More than a pika just liked a human. He was
probably walking back and forth in the living room for 30 mins until it finally
clicked.
He was a pika! A pika who liked a human. And there was one thing
Yoongi absolutely loved beside his garden and Jungkook: sleeping!
Jungkook
jumped up from the excitement that was rushing through him and he ran to the
back door and into the garden. His instincts were kicking in, little soft pika
sounds coming from him as he collected anything fluffy and cushion-y he could
find to bring it up into their bedroom. He would make them a burrow! A perfect
burrow that wouldn’t fall or break. A home that would bring safety from
intruders and would only belong to them. It was his pika way of saying that he
liked him and that he wanted to be his home, just as much as Yoongi became his.
When Yoongi came home he was exhausted. He had tried calling Jungkook to tell
him that he would have to stay a little longer, but no one had picked up. He
knew that Jungkook was probably just in the garden and didn’t hear the phone,
but he was still a little nervous when he opened the door. He made one step
inside and slipped on something. Luckily he could hold into the wardrobe to not
fall fully on his face, but it didn’t exactly help to brighten his day. He
turned to look at what he had slipped on and saw a tiny heap of hay. He
wondered if he had brought it in from the market but then he saw another bit of
hay a few steps further in and then some more and even more after that. What
the hell had happened here? He always had some hay in the garden when the spot
where he put the mowed grass dried out, but he never brought it in the house.
Had Jungkook played with it?
He followed the trail up the stairs, like some
clueless paper chaser and got more and more shocked at the amount of hay that
was strewn on basically every surface. It would take ages to get it all off
because there were so many tiny pieces, and he didn’t have a vacuum cleaner.
The trail led to the bedroom and the closer he got the more he anticipated the
worst. Still, he was surprised by the absolute havoc Jungkook had wreaked.
There was absolute and utter chaos in the room. He could detect what seemed to
be all of his cushions sticking out from under a blanket that was held up by
something he couldn’t see but he suspected it was his brooms from the garden.
They were always full of dirt and grass and had absolutely nothing to do in the
bedroom. However, his bedroom didn’t look like one anyways. The mattress had been
put on the floor and there was hay basically everywhere. Decorated over the
cover, in between the cushions, coating the floor in a thin layer of
brownish-green.
“Jungkook! What the hell have you been doing?!” Jungkook
flinched hard from the tone of Yoongi’s voice. It didn’t sound like the human
was surprised in a good way. He had been hoping from the moment he heard the
key turn in the lock until Yoongi was upstairs.
Slowly, Jungkook peaked his
head out the small entrance that led into his burrow. “I…I made you a home…”
Jungkook’s hopeful voice and the way he places some more hay on a cushion made
Yoongi snap. “You made me…what? I already have a home, one that I would like
to be able to use! Where exactly am I supposed to sleep, Jungkook? I’ve worked
for five hours at the market, lifting boxes and packing stuff and I’m tired and
I’d really, really like to lay down. I’m not like you and can comfortably sleep
in this heap of chaos, with grass and hay and dirt everywhere! It’s fucking
everywhere! I almost fell on the way in because it was on the floor! How did
you even get this much dirt into the house? It will take me forever to clean
that up! And the mattress! Look at those grass stains, they won’t get out! A
mattress is expensive, Jungkook, I can’t just whip out money just because you
decided ruining my bedroom would be a fun afternoon activity!”
Jungkook teared
up instantly when Yoongi’s words cut through him like a sharp knife. He folded
his ears in, making a small sound as he flinched with every curse word coming
from the human. He didn’t know what to say, so instead Jungkook curled back
into the burrow, sniffling quietly as he wiped the tears off his cheek. He had
thought this would be a fun surprise and now it had turned into a nightmare and
Jungkook hated himself. He could have thought about this sooner. How dumb must
he be to think that Yoongi would like his love language.
Yoongi’s anger faded
when Jungkook flinched away from him, hiding like he was scared that Yoongi
would punish him. He sighed deeply. He was still exhausted and tired and less
than happy about this mess, but he tried to get it together because he realized
that yelling at someone like Jungkook wasn’t a good idea. He knelt down,
ignoring how something hay-related was pricking his knees.
“Jungkook? Can you
please come out? I want to talk about this and …I know you probably didn’t do
this on purpose. I just… I’m really sorry I yelled at you. Can you understand
why I was angry though? You know that I wasn’t trying to scare you and that I would
never hurt you? You remember what I promised, right? Nothing changes that, not
even when I’m angry. Can you come out please?” He could see the folded ears and
it hurt to see the younger as scared as he had been at the police station,
right in the beginning.
“B-but you were supposed to react the opposite way,”
Jungkook sniffled, shaking his head. “N-no. Y-you can come in.” He was feeling
sulky and disappointed at the same time and right now he felt the safest inside
the burrow. He didn’t trust his own feelings, nor his judgement or anything
else. He had really thought he could make this a special night. He even brought
in hay flowers that he had placed on Yoongi’s cushion.
Yoongi sighed again and
then tried to make himself as small as possible as he crawled into the small
space that Jungkook had created. He hesitated for a second when he saw that
Jungkook did in fact use the dirty brooms and also a rake - but then his eyes
fell onto a big cushion, decorated with hay, of course but also a circle of
dried flowers. They were so carefully arranged that it was clear that Jungkook
had done it on purpose. For him. He sat down next to it, making sure not to
crush the flowers. “Are those for me?”
Jungkook nodded his head slowly, not
daring to look at Yoongi. “It’s…it’s our burrow.” He explained quickly, feeling
his cheeks glow red when he wiped over them again to get rid of the tears. “I
will clean it up though. I understand what you said, and I won’t do anything
like this again but I…” He gulped hard. He couldn’t get himself to say it, to
tell Yoongi that he had tried to show him how much he cared. Instead, he
settled on, “M-my instincts kicked in, I guess.”
“Our burrow? You mean like…
our nest?” He didn’t quite get the meaning of it, but he could see that it was
important to Jungkook and that he was hurt. “I’m sorry but.. I think I don’t
really understand. Was the bed too not good? I thought you slept well there.
Did you miss the smell of grass? Is this what this is all about? That you
wanted to feel more… at home?” He reached out for the younger’s hand. “Oh
Kookie, I wouldn’t have reacted like I did if I had known what it meant to you.
I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have let my anger out on you and instead let you
tell me why you did it first. I only saw the damage but of course you like to
have hay everywhere, right? I didn’t mean to make you sad. You don’t have to
clean it up right away. We should get the hay off the floor and the stairs in
the rest of the house so no one will slip again but as you made so much effort
we can sleep in here for a night? Just.. not forever because I can’t curl up
the same way you do. It makes my back hurt.”
Jungkook just sobbed when Yoongi
took his hand. He felt so god damn stupid and now Yoongi was apologizing to him
when he did this mess. “N-no, I clean it up. I…just got it all wrong.” Jungkook
bit his lip when Yoongi cocked his head aside, obviously not understanding what
he was referring to. His heart was beating against his chest so hard that it
hurt. “Y-you said everyone has their love language.” What he couldn’t say was,
that the pika in him wanted to make a home for them, a safe place where no one
could hurt them and maybe he overdid it just a tiny little bit, but he had
wanted it to be perfect for him.
“Yeah, I did?” He still didn’t get it and only
the tremble in Jungkook’s lips and the way the younger was avoiding his gaze
made him guess. “Wait, is this.. were you trying to tell me that.. you like
me?” He was stunned, staring at the younger to catch all of the younger’s expressions
to know if he was making a grave mistake right away. This couldn’t be it, could
it? He must have misunderstood or Jungkook had misinterpreted the love language
thing and was trying to give him a friendship present.
The pika nodded slowly.
“You gave me a home and I wanted to make you one, too. T-this is how I know to
do it. When you said that it’s how to show that you liked someone…I thought I
could do it for you.” He averted his gaze shyly. “M-my heart jumps when I see
you and …I miss you a lot when you’re gone and…I like it when we cuddle, and I
want to…” Jungkook chewed on his bottom lip nervously. “I want to kiss you, but
not like the nose kisses I give you anyways on your cheek but like they do it
on the tv. And now I made a mess…”
Jungkook’s confession took his breath away.
He felt the need to check if this wasn’t a daydream, a hopeful fantasy that his
mind had constructed because his heart had been aching so much for it. He
probably wouldn’t have included that much hay though. “You want to.. Kookie,
are you sure?” He didn’t dare to come closer even though he wanted to hug the
younger close and kiss him right away. He couldn’t give in to this before he
had made sure that they were absolutely on the same page. “You don’t have to…
pay me back or something. I did what I could, and I like you a lot, more than I
should actually and if you caught up on this and think that you have to ‘do
this’ for me because I was nice to you then please, please tell me now. Because
otherwise I will think that you really, truly want this. That you …that you
love me? I don’t want you to do or say anything that you don’t really mean. Not
for my sake and.. also, not because you think you have to keep me ‘happy’ for
me to keep you here. It’s not why you did this, right? Because you think you
need to for some reason?” He held his breath, too scared of Jungkook’s answer
to be able to relax.
„Never once did you make me think I had to do anything
because you took me in. Not one single time, Yoongi. You always just took me as
I am and…and that’s one thing I always loved about you.” Jungkook said with a
shy smile. “A burrow means so much to a pika. Safety, warmth, and a home and
all of this is you. Maybe without this chaotic mess but…I never had to…do
this…before…”
“So, this was a love confession written in hay? Well, if the
amount of hay is the amount of love you have for me then I can’t really be mad
at you for bringing in so much, can I?” He could feel himself getting teary
even as his smile was as bright as it could be. He couldn’t believe that his
life had turned around like this in a matter of a few short weeks. He had
walked past Jungkook a hundred times before and if Jungkook hadn’t run he would
have never get to know him like he did and he would have lost the person who had
taken residence in his heart as much as he had in his home. How could he have
been so lucky? He leaned in, nosing along Jungkook’s jaw the way he had noticed
the younger doing to him whenever he felt especially affectionate. He didn’t
dare to kiss him yet because he felt like his heart might burst from happiness
if he did. “You know, we can redecorate the bedroom a little if you want. We
can make it as burrow-y as possible while also keeping the bed and maybe with a
little less dirt. How about we put dried flowers on the walls, like the ones
you chose for me? They are really pretty, and I like them very much, by the
way. Thank you.” He placed a little kiss against the younger’s cheekbone. “I
can show you what a canopy bed looks like because depending on how long and
opaque the curtains are it gets very close to what you build here. I can get
more cushions so we can put them all around the mattress… and if you miss the
scent of hay I can fill a cushion with it for you so that you always have the
feeling of safety and home with you while also sleeping next to me in a bed.
Would you like that? Do you want to build a new burrow with me, one that is
meant to last us forever?”
Jungkook didn’t need to say it out loud, his eyes
and how they were shining was enough of an answer for Yoongi. With a jump, he
hugged Yoongi tight, making the human fall over as their lips met him for the
first - but definitely not the last time.
