In the world of Override, no piece of technology is safe from the wrath of Charles Feldman’s worldwide Y2K bug. You’ll be pitted against foes you once considered everyday appliances, from box TVs to computer monitors to…
Here’s a look at what a typical battle scenario in Override would look like! While similar to the battle screens of the MOTHER series in a few respects, a lot went into making sure Override’s battle screen was different enough to be its own thing!
Below, you’ll find some more images and a very lengthy explanation regarding the changes I made to make Override’s battle screen different from its inspiration!
A large part of Earthbound’s charm stems from its whimsically varied battle backgrounds that make use of all kinds of different layer combinations, which result in some prettysweetlookingbackdrops (Possible eye strain warning).
Quite a few games that are Earthbound-inspired tend to follow a similar formula: having a battle take place on a multi-colored, psychedelic background. But when it came time for me to figure out what I wanted Override’s battle screen to look like, I knew I wanted to make something that stood out from the norm— but how could I?
I decided to start with the boxes that display the characters’ stats. Earthbound and Override both have the former’s ‘rolling HP’ mechanic, though instead of the numbers rolling down like a slot machine like they do in EB, I designed the HP counters to look a bit like an LED clock to befit the game’s technical theme, which would count down at a fixed speed.
In Earthbound, every character’s stat box is the same size, and stays that way through the duration of each battle. In Override, however, the only stat box that is maximized at any given time depends on whose turn it is. In the battle screen above, you’ll notice it’s Bradley’s turn, and Casey and Lauren’s stat boxes are noticeably smaller, though they both have distinct color indicators dictating who’s HP belongs to who and the HP being at a visible size even when it isn’t a character’s turn.
With that decided, it was time to figure out what I wanted to do for the actual background. In most Earthbound battles, the background is noticeably cropped by two black bars, which is where the menus and stat boxes are located. I made the decision to stylize this and have a similar border, but instead of being black rectangles straight across, it’s more curved, giving the screen a bit of a circular shape.
As for the background, nothing says 'technical’ more than a grid background, which is what I went for when drawing Override’s background. I feel like the background itself could change for bosses (Maybe like a unique BG for each boss), though that’s merely a fun idea. But, unlike said fun idea, I didn’t want the BG to be a mere static image.
Thus, I had another idea.
You see how the background in the battle screen above is green? That’s because it’s Bradley’s turn! Depending on whose turn it is in battle, the background color will shift accordingly: blue for Casey, ruby red for Lauren, green for Bradley, purple for MacKenzie and a greyscale version for the opponent.
You can get an idea of how the background would change color-to-color with this gif!
I also think that the grid background itself would scroll diagonally, giving it that classic Earthbound battle background feel without being too on-the-nose, though I couldn’t think of a way to replicate that into gif form just yet.
Alright! So, we’ve got a fully designed HUD and background. What’s next? Why, we need an opponent to be fighting, of course! Since the start of Override’s lore conception, I’ve had an inside joke that, since the Y2K was thought to 'put machine against man’, that a close encounter with a microwave would be in the cards.
Enter The Overcooker!
It was the perfect idea to test out what a standard enemy would look like on the background I had designed. A microwave spewing fire just sounds like something you would fight in a MOTHER game, so I went ahead and sprited exactly that— and had a lot of fun with it as well! It may have been a bit tough to shade, but its huge flame and its bright green LED eyes makes for a really solid looking sprite, I find.
Well, I’ve spent enough paragraphs explaining the ins and outs of the design process that went into the battle screen I posted at the start, and while it may have ended up being a bit longer than I planned, it’s at the very least insightful! I plan on uploading some more battle screens once I get some more sprites made for them, though I hope you’ve enjoyed everything this post had to offer!
#Override#The Overcooker#Sprite Art#Game Design#Mockup#Concept Art#Long Post#Coolness #Cool-NESS? #(No wait. I think I've made that joke before) #The very existence of The Overcooker is a result of my tendency to take action in bringing a funny idea to fruition #You wouldn't believe the amount of times I searched 'do microwaves have plugs'. #I've had the Override HUD sitting around for a little while. About since the end of 2020 I think #Though I haven't had a chance to do much with it until I got The Overcooker (And one other future thing) sprited #That being said it was really fun to sprite it. #I still feel a little bad that my insight ended up being way too long #But y'know what? At least I can rest easy knowing that there are people who enjoy reading every word! #Solution to defeating The Overcooker: close its door. #Then bash it with a stop sign. Or set it on fire. ... would that be overkill? #Or should I say O v e r r i d e ? #I'm having way too much fun with these tags
On September 11th, 2020, I posted this, a teaser for a ‘faux Earthbound-inspired project’ featuring four brightly colored silhouettes of its four main characters. The concept and characters were shrouded in mystery up until April 7th of the following year, where I posted yet another teaser in the form of an in-game screenshot, revealing the character of Lauren Henley and the project’s placeholder title, Project 2000.
In that post, I mentioned that Project 2000 isn’t the project’s final name, and that I would be unveiling its true name later on down the line. The truth of the matter was that I could have gone and revealed the true name as early as… well, 2020 if I wanted to. But a lot of the project was still being figured out at that time (Including the designs of its main characters!), and I wanted to hold off on revealing anything more until I knew I was 100% ready to explain what this 'Project 2000’ even is.
Now, nearing a year after I posted the initial first teaser, I feel as though it’s about time to introduce a few more original characters of mine to this blog, and with that being said…
This, of course, led to creators opting to shape games around a similar basis to Earthbound, whether its in terms of graphical style, humor, battle tactics, and much more. I think the most popular example when the phrase “Earthbound-Inspired RPG” comes to mind is undoubtedly Toby Fox’s Undertale, which shared a lot of the same humor as its inspiration as well as a similar graphical style.
Some fans liked the MOTHER series so much that they wanted to take the franchise into their own hands and create the next installment after Shigesato Itoi stated that MOTHER 3 was the last game in the franchise, and MOTHER 4 began production by fans. Many Winter 2014s later, it was unsure if the game was still in production, though the project was officially rebranded as its own entity as Oddity in 2020.
Override is, essentially, my kind of Undertale/Oddity, mixing elements from Earthbound, MOTHER 3, the Y2K bug and the general 2000s aesthetic together into one. By that first part, I mean it’s an Earthbound-Inspired RPG crafted by my own hand (Dating as far back as mid-2019); it, of course, isn’t an actual game, but rather a collection of conceptual art pieces and faux in-game screenshots I’ve made detailing what it would look like as a real game (Like Mega Man Ultimate).
Oh, right, the plot! Bear in mind that a lot of the finer details of Override’s story haven’t quite been figured out yet, but I can say that I at least have enough to finally get around to talking about it.
Charles Feldman, CEO of Synergon Robotics, longs to spearhead a dystopian world with an invincible army of technologic law-enforcers, though finds it almost impossible to in his current time, the year 2095, where such technology is commonplace.
For years, he has meticulously shaped a plan where he, a team of subordinates and all the robo-security he could need would time travel back just before the year 2000, wherein he would corrupt all technology at that point with a 'Y2K Bug’ and force the denizens of the world to live a lifestyle not unlike the events of the novel 1984, wherein humanity’s every move is closely observed, and if someone steps out of line, they fall to the wrath of the Synergon Police.
His plan, for the most part, is successful. He travels back to the date November 18th, 1997 to have enough time to prepare for his eventual world-ruling plan on midnight, January 1st, 2000. The aforementioned Synergon police are armed with powerful devices called 'Psiometers’, which are watch-like gadgets which connect to the user’s neural network to unlock the powers of the mind.
Psiometers alongside other tech necessary for Feldman’s ploy are transferred base-to-base in the middle of the night via drones, which are equipped with cameras and can hold up to twenty pounds of equipment. However, on the night of December 30th, 1999, a flaw in the wrap-up of Feldman’s ultimate plan occurs, when a last minute drone delivery of two Psiometer units results in a crash.
The drone lands in the yard of the Henley residence. Nine and a half year old Lauren Henley overhears the crash and goes outside to investigate, finding the busted drone amidst the snow. After another brief malfunction, it shuts itself down, and Lauren, vowing to figure out its origins, drags it into the garage and goes back to bed…
December 31st, 1999. Lauren brings the Synergon drone to her neighbor’s house, and shows it to her best friend, nine year old Casey Treverton. The two shortly discover the drone’s contents, and Lauren instantly suspects there’s more to the Synergon story. They ultimately are short on answers for the time being, and keep the whole thing a secret from their parents until later that night…
One minute until the new year. Casey and Lauren hurry to the downstairs of the Treverton residence to catch the ball drop for the new millennium. Whatever weirdness happened earlier is put on the backburner as the two flop down in front of the TV, eagerly counting down the seconds left of 1999.
“5… 4… 3… 2…”
Then, a nationwide power shortage. Nobody has any clue what’s going on. Eventually, the TV flickers back on, and instead of the new year festivities they had been watching prior, the picture depicts a grizzled although finely dressed man in front of a white backdrop; Charles Feldman.
He states that his message is being broadcast across every television in the country, and reveals his lengthy plan to create a highly technical dystopian society overseen by Synergon Robotics, threatening to rewire any technology he pleases for the worst should anyone oppose him.
Casey and Lauren grimace at each other.
Three months pass. Not a lot has changed this early on in, though the citizens of Maywood are under close surveillance by various automatons to make sure nobody tries anything funny. Lauren decides that she has had enough of this 'Synergon Business’ and asks Casey if he’s interested in figuring out how the Psiometers work and using them against Synergon to ultimately take them down.
At first, Casey is unsure, true to his nervous personality. There isn’t any rational way two children could lead to the downfall of an entity which has taken over the world, but Lauren is sure of their success, and with enough coercing the two embark on a mission to take back what’s theirs. Who do they meet along the way? Just how deep does the Synergon plan run? And will they reign victorious? Only time will tell…
Well, now that we have the lengthy scene-setting out of the way, let’s check out the good stuff; checking out the four heroes of Override which were teased last year! It’s a good thing I chose to wait to show their designs off, because the silhouettes shown in the teaser weren’t the same designs as what I have now. So, let’s get right into it!
It may have taken much longer than I expected to show Override off, but at the very least that means I can now get around to posting/writing about what I’ve come up for it! I have a lot of Override-related content on the way, though I find that this is an excellent way to introduce its world! A LOT of work was put into this, so I hope you’ve enjoyed everything this post has to offer!

Hi all! Just wanted to make a post recognizing the fact that I haven’t really posted anything major lately (At least not on this blog), but I do want to say that I have been working on a few things that I’m really excited to show off soon enough! These upcoming pieces take my sprite art and tilesetting skills up to eleven, and I’m very much so looking forward to making the post formally introducing it all! Some really cool stuff is on the way!
#Star Speaks#Project 2000#Coolness #One WOULD think I haven't been posting much here 'cause I've been posting on my self-ship sideblog #Which is half right #But as I mentioned I've been working on a LOT of conceptual stuff that's pretty much all sprite art #I'll probably split it all up into multiple posts but the first of them will probably be the biggest. #For those who read my tags (And those who recognize the contraption in the gif) you'll find that it relates to Project 2000 #Of which I've talked about like once officially on this blog. #Well soon more details shall finally be unveiled!
On August 12th of last year, I made a post showing off one of the very first original characters I’ve ever shown off on this blog, that character being Patricia Ravenwood, an antagonistic plague doctor that proved to be a hit in the plague doctor community of tumblr. If not for me showing her off, I don’t think I would have ever met my wonderful mentor, @plague-doctor-queer!
However, ever since her debut post, I’ve found that I haven’t necessarily drawn her since. Don’t get me wrong, in no way have I forgotten her, the truth of the matter is that I actually have drawn a small sketch of her back last December, but I never got around to posting it as it was merely a test sketch practicing side angles.
Up until a few days ago, I learned that July 9th of this year would mark the one-year anniversary of her initial design (I was sure that July 9th was also the day I made her debut post, but strangely that didn’t come until next month… weird), and I was REALLY wanting to take that opportunity and bring back the ruler of ravens considering how well she was received when I first posted her. I wasn’t sure if the kind of drawing I had in mind for her would turn out the way I wanted it to…
… but my final result turned out to be one of my best drawings in a long while!
As I mentioned above, when I sat down to draw Patricia again in time for her one year anniversary of when I first drew her, I was a little nervous. I’d been focusing on sprite art more than any other form of art since December of last year, so I was really worried that my next drawing of her wouldn’t look as good as her first outing, even if I had been drawing quite a bit since then.
But when I first began to sketch her out on paper, I learned fairly quickly that not only was this easily the best Patricia I’ve drawn— and that I’ve clearly improved art-wise since 2020— but also that I had drawn her in a pose that I completely improvised… which looked absolutely BEASTLY. Suddenly, I had nothing to worry about— she was looking fantastic!
Here’s what her standalone art looks like without the added affects and background! I think the biggest changes from her debut drawing to this one are her updated mask and her shoulder cape (Which I finally learned how to draw properly). I even stylized her raven cane a bit!
I knew from when I began coloring her digitally that this was going to result in one of my most visually appealing pieces of art in a very long time (Right next to this art I made of Clairen), and to say that I’m proud of it wouldn’t be doing it enough justice. I was ecstatic to get around to posting it, and I hope that this is a fitting return for the yin to Quinn’s yang!
“Hmph! Step aside! This isn’t a job for an amateur such as yourself; let a real doctor handle the matter at hand…”
#Patricia#Patricia Ravenwood#Plague Doctor#Plague Mask#Plaguecore #Plague Doctor OC #Plague Doctor Art #(Can you tell I'm attempting to appeal to the plague docs?) #Artwork#OC#Coolness #It's an anomaly on why I haven't drawn Patricia more though I think I know one reason why #I think it's because I could never get her cape to look right. #The only reason I got it to look good now is because it's pretty similar to Clairen's cape #Given that I've also drawn King Knight and his regal cape a good few times... that was also quite helpful #MAN I adore Patricia's character. She quite literally is the opposite of Quinn #She's antagonistic. Quinn's optimistic. Her bird of choice is a raven. Quinn's bird of choice is a dove. #... and she's really short. Quinn's not. #Maybe now that I have her drawn I can focus on designing ANOTHER plague doctor character I've had in mind for a while #And she isn't just an ordinary plague doctor either. She's like plaguecore crossed with cottagecore #AND she's Quinn's love interest! #I still cannot get over how good I got this drawing to look. The lighting especially.
Hilariously, an hour or so before I even saw this ask, I thought ‘Hmmm, I wonder if Issue 3 of Future Imperfect is out yet’ (Because I was thinking of Clairen) and whaddaya know, not only is it out but this time I actually found out myself… unlike the previous two times. You’ll definitely be hearing my thoughts on it on my alternate blog at some point today!

I've waited all afternoon for this!
Hey, all! I’m sure even some of my more recent followers have seen a post or two about me going off the walls over my fictional others (Or F/Os as I commonly put them)— I do tend to post about them quite a bit, after all. I was on the fence about this for a little while for a variety of reasons, but I’ve since come to a simple conclusion: you won’t be seeing that many F/O posts on this blog from this point forward…
… because all of my F/O ramblings will instead be on my new self-ship sideblog, @stars-self-ships!
Now, the endless love I have for my fictional others will be spoken of to great lengths on a separate blog so that this blog can focus more on the usual posts! I understand that a few of you like my detailed write-ups over things I’m passionate over, and if that’s your cup of tea, I’d recommend giving the blog a follow! I put a lot of love into making sure the blog looks nice, so even if it’s not your kind of thing, do give it a look if you’d like!
#Self-Ship#Self-Ship Community#New Sideblog#Star's Self-Ships#F/O#F/O Community#Coolness #As I mentioned I wasn't sure if I wanted to make a self-ship sideblog at first #But then my good friend minxikuo made one and I wanted in on the action #The F/O page on the sideblog is S O much prettier than the one on this blog is. #It took such a long time to get it looking EXACTLY how I wanted it to look... #... which involved making an icon for each F/O... #... and a tag (I'm not as good as F/O tags as some others are but I got to dish out some funny puns) for each F/O... #But I'm still REALLY proud of it!!
Hey Nyah! While I had planned to send in an ask wondering if it was okay to gush about F/Os in an ask, I discovered that not only had that question been answered, but it was the first ask you'd reveived, so I thought that was pretty humorous.
That said, I'm going to give gushing a go, namely over an F/O that I've been deeply in love with for the past six months. Her name is Clairen, and she is from Rivals of Aether/Lovers of Aether, and just thinking about her just makes me melt.
First of all, she's gorgeous, obviously she's cute in both continuities but just look at the image I linked of her Lovers of Aether design (If it shows up, even. I'm doing this on mobile 'cause there's no word limit). I am in L O V E . Her smile is so precious to me!!
I also really like her personality; in Rivals, she's more of a no-nonsense, overprotective type, but this gets flipped on its head in Lovers where she's portrayed as a socially awkward but optimistic type. Sometimes when I'm not feeling very confident in myself, I think that she would go the distance to protect me from any harm and reassure me with her sweet smile and gentle words- it lifts my mood every single time. She always makes me feel like I have a place in the world and I'm speechless that of all people, she chose me to be hers. I AM JUST SO IN LOVE WITH HER
Hihi again Star! I’m glad to see another ask from yu!! <3 Excited Nyah noises cuz I am SO READY for the gush!! I wanna quickly say too that I instantly clicked on the links and like, she is SO COOL LOOKING!! Like, oh my gosh, woah!! I’d definitely love to be her friend. Clairen is such a cool name too! I was gonna say she seems like she’d be a protective person and now I’m seeing yu said that already hehe.
The more I read yur ask, the more EEEEEEE!! :D JDBFJD feeling I’m getting because I can tell you love her so so much and she is literally so greatful for your love! I bet she always feels like she’s on cloud 9 when she’s with you!! Is there a cloud 100? If there is, she’s on cloud 100 actually! Best of the best!
That’s so interesting tho to see her personality chance between Rivals and Lovers! Is there a specific reason (like game or story design) or is it just because?
She definitely does care so much for you though! When you’re feeling down like that, I KNOW she’s right there with you, ready to bring you back up and feel the best you can feel. You do have a place in this world too and I’m so SO glad she makes you feel like that!! That’s one of the best feelings an F/O can give you and I approve of it so so much!! Also, when she tells you she loves you, I have such a strong feeling that the word love isn’t even the right word. Her love for you is so big that the world doesn’t have a word for it.
Just, oh my goodness. The two of you are so sweet and I love how much you love her! This ask was such a cute one and I so hope I get more gush asks in the future!!

Happy seventh anniversary to Yacht Club Games’ iconic tale of shovel justice, Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope! It’s a bit unreal to me that not only is the original Shovel Knight nearing being released for an entire decade, but also that it’s already been a whole year since my last Shovel Knight anniversary post; time flies, no?
Last year, I created a whopping thirteen wallpapers for the occasion, the last one of the bunch easily taking the cake for being the most detail-intensive. I knew that I wanted to make more wallpapers for next year, though it was clear to me that I probably wouldn’t be able to top last year’s effort, so this year I’ve kept things simple and have created three wallpapers. I even made one in my patented ‘checkerboard’ styled wallpaper like the ones I’ve made for Plague of Shadows and Specter of Torment! Have a look!
May this blue burrower protect all the land with shovelry for years to come!

Happy twenty-fifth anniversary to the third installment of Namco’s arcade archives, Namco Museum Vol. 3! This game (Tied with Mega Man 10 and Mega Man 11) is my favorite video game ever, and from it being a game I played a lot of during my earlier years, is largely the sole reason why I have such a deep fascination with all things arcade games!
The Namco Museum series, which debuted on the PlayStation, took classic arcade games of Namco’s creation and made them accessible for play right in the comfort of your living room! Five installments were released on the PlayStation (Including a Japan-Only sequel ‘Namco Museum Encore’), and each volume has games that everyone knows and loves, and even a few that are lesser known.
I find that Namco Museum Vol. 3 pulls the balance of 'arcade classics’ and 'classics lot to time’ quite nicely; you’ve got games you recognize like Ms. Pac-Man and Dig Dug, though there are also some games that aren’t quite as well known (Especially to the western audience) like Phozon and The Tower of Druaga. It makes for such a great collection of games!
And there’s only one way I like to show my appreciation for something in time for its anniversary…
It’s easier to notice in some wallpapers more than others (I find it’s the most obvious in the Phozon wallpaper), but I’ve attempted to replicate the style of an old CRT screen for each game’s wallpaper, so it looks like each picture was taken right from each game’s respective arcade cabinet. I’ve still got a little ways to go until I master the effect, but it really makes the game-specific wallpapers stand out!
Hopefully one day we’ll see a 'return to form’ for the Namco Museum series, as the original pentalogy on the PlayStation, while a bit dated, still has the most charm out of every Namco Museum that followed suit (All of which are mere compilations instead of… well… museums of content). Here’s to a timeless collection of timeless games!

After some thought, I've decided to open up a bit and give some F/O gushing a whirl, so... let's talk about my brothers!
Their names are Zetterburn and Forsburn (From left to right) and I just adore having them as my siblings. Zett is the oldest of us three, and Fors is my age. I am a HUGE sucker for anything familial F/O related, so just imagining anything with either brother is more than enough to get me going.
Zetterburn is the more outgoing, boisterous type, whereas Forsburn is the opposite: reclusive and considerate. Knowing that they love me for who I am simply empowers me to no end and I couldn't ask for a better pair of brothers. I've wanted nothing more than to be wrapped in either one (Or both) of their arms because they make me feel safe and like I belong 💖💖💖
!!! They seems like great brother and you all seems like a lovely family!!! They seem really cool!!

@superherorobots’s reblog of this caught my eye particularly because it prominently includes Centaur Man near the top (And Crash Man as well, her favorite!), but what really old the whole thing were the tags she wrote in her reblog.
I know it’s a day late but here’s a small drawing I did of Mega Man/Rockman! It’s not much but I’m still really proud of it!

Any longtime followers of my blog will know that posts centered around sprite art that I create are relatively commonplace, and how could they not be? I am an enthusiast of all things classic, and given that one of my very first posts on this blog was indeed a pair of custom sprites, I’ve really begun to focus on getting better and better at spriting, and I feel like it would be reasonable to say that the improvement is obvious!
For those of you that don’t know, my first piece of sprite art that I’ve uploaded here is this one in particular— custom sprites of Shovel Knight and King Knight that I had created back around February of 2020. I liked making the sprites a whole lot, and eventually decided that I would follow suit and make resprites of the remainder of the Order of No Quarter!
Looking back on the sprites, they were indeed pretty sweet for their time, but now that I’ve been working on improving in terms of spriting, I was convinced that I could do a lot better with a few of the knights… some way more than others. So, around July of last year, I started to create a revised version of my Order of No Quarter resprites, going as far as to respriting some members entirely to better fit their actual designs, and almost a year later…
I finally have everyone completed!
My original plan for going about showcasing each individual knight was to have three versions of each knight’s sprite: their original Shovel of Hope sprite, my first remake, and my more recent remake. While it would be a good visual on how far I’ve come, I felt like it would be a smidge redundant, so I’ve decided to show each knight’s original Shovel of Hope sprite with my most recent remakes, linking to the first remake for each.
With that out of the way, let’s steel our shovels and dive right in!
Some followers may recognize this resprite of King Knight since I’ve actually shown it at the end of last year, on King of Cards’ first anniversary! Between then and now, there weren’t a whole lot of fixes made to King Knight’s resprite save for a few shading touchups here or there, but I’m still really proud of this sprite in particular simply because of how better his cape looks compared to how I sprited it in 2020!
Now we’re getting to the good stuff! My initial resprite of Specter Knight was a bit all over the place— I found his hood particularly hard to recreate (Plus I wasn’t too fond of it at the time, I much preferred how it looks in his campaign’s artwork) so I just ended up designing his hood after how it looks in Specter of Torment, which resulted in a serious mismatch in style. Specter Knight was definitely one of the harder knights to revisit, as I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t be able to get his hood to look right, but I’m more than happy with what I ended up with— even his scythe looks better!
My biggest goal when remaking Plague Knight’s sprite was to pretty much redo their entire head to better fit their artwork, and while I did achieve this to a certain point in my first attempt, my second iteration of Plague Knight was more focused on fixing their hood and making their pose less static (Compared to my first version of the sprite, that is). I remember having a bit of trouble remaking Plague Knight’s mask in a way to where it wouldn’t be too big, but I do love the fruits of my labor!
Mole Knight is one of the few members of the Order of No Quarter that has more than two resprite iterations; with this most recent version, he has had three; the original resprite, one that fixed a few things, and the one you see above. This new version has a lot of shading fixes, as well as redrawn claws; he’s certainly a whole lot shinier! Speaking of knights that had more than two resprite iterations…
Treasure Knight, too, had three resprite iterations, one of them I didn’t even post to my blog. It was essentially just the previous resprite but with a redrawn head and shoulderpads, looking a whole lot closer to his Shovel of Hope sprite while being way shorter than my first version. It was just about the final version of my resprite of him, but I ended up redrawing his head again so it would look closer to how it looks in Shovel of Hope’s artwork. It took a tiny bit getting used to but I’m particularly proud of Treasure Knight’s resprite!
I think Tinker Knight’s resprite is the one I’m the most proud of. Not only is it an immense improvement over my original resprite, but I was able to make him look closer to his actual design as well as packing in a WHOLE lot more detail— and he’s only a few pixels taller than his OG sprite! You can probably imagine that it took a long while to achieve that level of detail and not have the end result be too big!
Something that always kind of off-put me was how little Propeller Knight looks in his original sprite when he’s flying. I think it’s unanimously agreed upon by the SK community that he’s quite tall, so when I resprited him for the first time, I opted to fix that… and made him a little too tall. As a result, Propeller Knight was redrawn entirely while making sure the height wasn’t as ridiculously lanky as my first attempt all while maintaining a fair level of detail and color fixes, and if I may, the end result is, as Propeller himself might say, magnifique!
And finally, Polar Knight. Really, since my first resprite of him, not a whole lot has changed save for a few color fixes and additional details. Since there isn’t really a whole lot of official art of Polar Knight that doesn’t depict him in a bizarre pose, I couldn’t really take any pose liberties and ended up sticking with the original posture; it might look like a bigger version of Polar’s SoH sprite, and while it technically is, there’s still a great deal of small changes throughout!
After all this time, it feels nice to finally be able to upload these new iterations of previous sprite recreations, and while this post was a long time coming, I hope you enjoyed the sprites and the readups for each one because a LOT of effort was put into every pixel of this!
#Shovel Knight#King Knight#Specter Knight#Plague Knight#Mole Knight#Treasure Knight#Tinker Knight#Propeller Knight#Polar Knight#Sprite Art#OC#Long Post#Coolness #No seriously. I could have made this post like last year if I wanted to. #But there were just so many things that I knew that I could do better hence having not actually making this post until now #Really the only reason I hadn't shown these sprites sooner is because of Specter Knight #I thought that I had to redraw him entirely and I wasn't looking forward to redrawing everything under the hood #Though I ended up using the original resprite's body as a base and fixed it up accordingly... then things went smoothly! #Some of these guys have no right to have certain attributes to be so tough to sprite. But I stuck to my goal and achieved it! #I am SO proud of these!!
ahh this could look much better if I didn’t get tired of working on each drawing I do so soon! I need to do something to train myself out of that habit…
hmmmm since I won’t have class next week, and I have no ideas lately, I might do one of those color palette challenges! …maybe!

Which Mega Man game was the first one you ever played?
I’ve thought about the answer to this for most of the afternoon, and can narrow the answer down to two possible games: my first Mega Man game was either Mega Man 2 or Mega Man 4.
There are a few reasons as to why it’s either of those installments— for one, they were the only Mega Man games I had on my Wii growing up that were from the Wii’s Virtual Console (I think I got Mega Man 3 at some point but had 2 and 4 way beforehand), and I remember playing a lot of each. I even remember the afternoon I beat Mega Man 2!
Secondly, not only did I play both Mega Man 2 and 4 on the Wii, but also on a website now defunct. The website in question is called ‘nintendo8.com’ and used an in-browser NES emulator to play pretty much every NES game you could possibly think of (Except for the ones that require specific peripherals like Duck Hunt or Hogan’s Alley). I recall playing Mega Man 4 a whole lot on nintendo8.com, and playing Mega Man 2 a whole lot on the Wii… hmm.
Well, at the very least, it was one of those two titles, and is also probably the reason why they’re so high up on my favorites list!
#Star Speaks#Asks#Mega Man #Mega Man 2 #Mega Man 4 #Coolness #Out of curiosity I went to go see if nintendo8.com was still up #Surprisingly it is! #My reaction to seeing it for the first time in years is as follows: #''... son. SON. N O . NO W A Y !'' #I had genuinely thought Nintendo had given the site the boot years ago! #Though while it's amazing that it's still online... it requires Flash to run the built-in emulator #And you know what happened to Flash. #But yeah I think Mega Man 4 might be my favorite of the six NES titles with two coming in close second (Comedy + 100) #Mega Man 6 automatically takes place for third because #Well #Horse husband... #Been thinking about him a lot today and I WILL make it known.
Just seeing BIG your high score in Bosconian is and reading your tags about it makes me think that it must have been a REALLY long game. How long was it?
Excellent question! As it turns out, in five days, it will have been three years since I set my 505k high score in Bosconian, so naturally it’s going to be a little difficult to remember certain details, but I certainly remember how long it took before I eventually game over’d.
On the Jakks Pacific port of Bosconian (Which I think is also identical to the arcade original in terms of gaining extra lives), you start with three lives, and are awarded an extra life at the benchmark high-score (20,000 points) and subsequent extra lives are given every 50,000 points afterward. I think.
Regardless, I was able to amass up to I think six lives at one point, and was somehow able to keep at least three or four lives around until I had far surpassed my previous 425k score… as at that point it had taken me well over an hour and a half. If that sounds crazy to you, it gets even crazier— the plug-and-play I played it on lacks a pause button.
It took over an hour and a half of nonstop master-level plays to reach 505,750 on top of making sure not to jolt the system itself too hard, resulting in a system restart because of the fact that the plug-and-play I set the score on didn’t have the battery cover on. To this day, I still have no clue how I pulled off such a stunt… though at some point I want to go even higher.
Also, since I have it on-hand…
Here’s photo evidence! While I recognize that the photo quality itself is particularly lacking, also remember that my hands were sweating and shaking like you wouldn’t believe and I had to snag a quick picture of the score before the plug-and-play could just decide to restart at any moment. I’m still really proud of myself!
#Star Speaks#Asks#Bosconian#Coolness #This is like the first time in a while I've used the 'Bosconian' tag #Regardless #That night when I set the score was something else. #Since I set it I've been convinced that I could go further than 505k. I'm thinking my next goal should be 575k-600k. THAT'D be satisfying #Also I played for so long that at one point the sequence of levels restarted #Either Round 21 or Round 22 sets you back at square one but with even harder difficulty #The only reason I noticed is because I was like ''Hey I've seen this one'' #The day I come across an actual Bosconian cabinet will be the real test. I'm decent at the actual arcade version but like #Doing it on a genuine Bosconian cab would be the REAL deal. #You can bet I'll make a whole post about that should a discovery like that happen!
✨Pass on the love! Send this to 5 of your favorite blogs and respond with five facts about yourself ✨
Ooh, I’ve seen this going around tumblr lately, and was wondering if I’d have a chance to receive this ask for myself— really excited to see it show up in my inbox!
1.) I’ve been a fan of all things classic video games since I was about six or seven. This was, in part, because I grew up with a Playstation 2 as well as a copy of one of the greatest video games ever made, as well as both of Jakks Pacific’s early Namco Plug-And-Plays. I’m pretty sure I was the only kid who had a Nintendo Entertainment System on their Christmas list in 2008.
2.) I have way too many plushies in my room. From Mega Man plushes to Rivals of Aether plushes, they’re just about everywhere you can look! Though, two of my most prized plushes I received for my birthday about eleven or so years apart; a polar bear I named Snowball, and a crab I found at the mall last year that I named ‘Carlos the Celebratory Crustacean’. Clearly, I got more creative in naming as time went on, but they are very special to me!
3.) I discovered that I was insanely good at Bosconian by complete accident. As a kid, I wasn’t all that good at it, but once I found the Plug-And-Play that I used to play it on years later, I ended up giving Bosconian another go and learned that I actually was pretty good at it. For a while, my top score was somewhere around 425k, but then when I wanted to see if I could go higher, I eventually blew that score out of the water with a 505,750 score! I sometimes don’t like to pat myself on the back, but it’s safe to say I’m a master at the game— and my tumblr handle is StarDestroyer81 for a reason!
4.) One could assume that, looking at my blog, Mega Man or Pac-Man were the franchises that I grew up with and shaped most of my childhood around. However, while that is technically true, there stands one other gaming legend that I was absolutely known for as a kid… Super Mario. When I was little, I was convinced that I was the biggest Mario fan, and like @stephysalcido, New Super Mario Bros and its eventual Wii sequel are some of my favorite games ever! One day I hope to do little me justice and actually sit down and 100% Super Mario 64, a game that I played a lot of back then.
5.) I’ve briefly touched on this in previous posts, but as hard as it might be to believe, creating sprite art wasn’t a hobby for me until mid-2019. I’ve sprited quite a bit of things before that time period, but a lot of it was… kind of plain. There wasn’t really a whole lot to my earlier sprite works, and while I could do it, I was far from competent at it until I began to practice spriting for real. I mean, I only just learned how to tileset this year, and even then I’m still a novice. But looking at previous sprite pieces compared to what I can do with sprite art nowadays, I’m more than confident to say that I’ve made some big improvements, and there’s always more room to improve!

Hi Mod Void! I came across your blog and wanted to know if I could get a lockscreen of my romantic F/O Clairen? She is from Rivals of Aether/Lovers of Aether (Doesn't matter which continuity you settle for), and is relatively obscure- while definitely not as obscure as some other F/Os some self-shippers on this site have, I would adore to see a lockscreen of her because I LOVE the style you make them in. Thanks so much and much love!!
Hello dear! I’m very glad you enjoy the lockscreens! I used her sprite from Lovers of Aether to make this one! Feel free to request again if it doesn’t suit your taste!

Whether you’re absolutely positive of your sexual orientation or are still trying to figure things out, know that you are all valid and that this is your month to shine!
Last year (Just before Pride Month ended), I made this sprite edit to wrap things up neatly, and I knew up front that I wanted to do something similar come next year’s month of LGBTQ+ festivities. My original idea was to shift focus from Plague Knight to King Knight, but wasn’t keen on having it focused on just the gilded goon by himself.
So, after some thinking…
I decided that all four knights could spread some pride throughout the land!
I had made an icon for @specterknight2014 last year where King Knight’s cape was instead thematically inspired by that of the standard pride flag, so I knew that I wanted to bring that idea back. Specter Knight being themed after the trans flag was also inspired by specterknight2014 as well; it took some shading but I was able to get a trans palette of Specter that I was satisfied with!
Then Shovel Knight is themed after the bi flag (His palette looks the best, I find) and Plague Knight, true to my headcanon that they identify with they/them pronouns, chaotically symbolizes the nonbinary flag (Oh, @breakbeat-solitare?)! I realize that the colors on the flags aren’t 100% accurate, though that’s just because I wanted to stick to the SK color palette as close as possible (Even though I had to cheat with the purple color on King’s flag).
But that’s not all!
I’ve also taken each knight and made an icon out of their sprite and the flag they were based off of, including a lesbian flag alternate for King Knight! I had a lot of fun making these, and as I mentioned in last year’s post, my heart goes out to the LGBTQ+ community; you’re all valid!
As of today, @bard-art / @specterknight2014 / @sparklin-bitch-boy and I have known each other for an entire year, and he has the prideful distinction of being one of if not the first of the best friends I’ve met on tumblr. As I think back to how he and I met (Which you can read a little bit about in this post), I’m convinced that we were absolutely destined to cross paths. Just read what he put in this post, it was as though I was meant to see it.
He made a post celebrating the occasion, and made a mention that, if it weren’t for me, he wouldn’t be where he is today, and would not have met the friends he has in addition. I’m not about to boost my ego by saying he’s right, though I will say that he too has helped me overcome boundaries I could not have accomplished by myself. If not for him, I would not be so open about posting about my self-inserts or my fictional others. The Fated Acolyte would not have been shown publicly if it weren’t for the encouragement he’s given me after all of this time, and I can’t thank him enough for it.
What I can do, however, is show my appreciation for him!
Last year, on this day specifically, I made sprite art of his Shovel Knight self-insert, Bug Knight; specifically, a full-body sprite and a character portrait. It was admittedly a little hard to sprite Bug Knight’s full-body sprite to where the height wasn’t too oversized and keeping all of the little details in check, but I had a lot of fun with it!
Interesting, exactly one month later (June 28th, specifically), I began a new piece of sprite art regarding Bug Knight, one that (In hindsight) was really ambitious for its time, especially since I hadn’t picked up spriting yet around that time; a full-body Shovel Knight Showdown styled portrait. This was way before I made that Showdown Wizzem recreation, and creating a sprite of that scale, especially in mid-2020, was practically unheard of.
I had a paper sketch of how I wanted Bug Knight’s Showdown full-body to look, and really all I had to do was outline and color it. I got about 35% of it finished before I put it on the backburner for a while. I knew that I wanted to save it for a special event, and I figured that our one-year anniversary as best friends would be the perfect opportunity to go back and finish up what I had started, now that I’ve had some experience in larger-scale spriting.
It took a lot longer than I’d like to admit to get the sprite looking exactly how I wanted it to…
But I think the turnout is nothing short of splendid!
I knew up front that I wanted Bug Knight’s wings to be open, but I wasn’t sure how to go about spriting them without the end result being inaccurate. This post was what I used as a reference image, and I’m hoping that it looks good for what it is. I wasn’t sure what color I should make for Bug’s wings (I know they’re gold on the back, but I didn’t know how the inside should look) so I just made them a dark brown to play it safe, a nice balance between the gold and grey.
And what’s a Showdown portrait without alternate palettes?
In order of no quarter, the palettes are based off of:
Top Row: Default, Fated Acolyte, Specter Knight (This one was a little tough since I limited myself to SK’s NES palette, his base color is a more pink-ish red because the palette looked more like Mole Knight if I went with a standard red), Shovel Knight, Bard/King Knight Bottom Row: Propeller Knight, Treasure Knight, Horace, and a nice pink palette to round things off
I find that this is an excellent way to show my appreciation for you, Douglas, and I am beyond happy to have such a wonderful friend like you— you’ve made my experience on tumblr one of the best it could be!
