I’m 6 episodes deep in Banana Fish and I know it’s too soon to assume or form any opinions and hence I won’t say much right now. Though I do have a few things in my mind that I want to get rid of.
- while the anime has brought up some really heavy topics right from the beginning, the overall atmosphere, the way they discuss it briefly, isn’t serious in tone or settle in, in a heavy dull emotion (or at least doesn’t feel like it to me)
I just hope they’ll handle those with care or I’ll just be straight up disappointed.
- The bit with ash’s father was disturbing for me and I can’t stand it. The way he was telling others about Ash’s childhood, which was fucked up in more ways than one, his reaction to that traumatic experience (he was freaking 7 years old?!!) Him saying I just told my son to “let it happen”
Him basically being responsible for not handling the child carrying such a scar within him, letting him run away only for him to be falling under the present situation bringing more unthinkable misery, talking to him in such a disgusting, homophobic language, disowning him. And then we see him being shot out of nowhere and him saying he wishes him well? And the episode ends right there as if everything is good and well?
Oh god I can’t say how much that doesn’t sit right with me. And things that felt so wrong.
