watching a movie and it’s like. oh this has chronic made by a man syndrome
so we know that xie lian’s cooking wasn’t always as horrendous as it is in present time. it used to be decent! however after his mum (whose dishes were Terrible) died, his cooking started to deteriorate to the point it’s at now. so, consider: xie lian’s cooking getting better.
xie lian cooking with and for hua cheng. hua cheng embracing him from behind and laying his head on xl’s shoulder as he gives honest advice; saying what’s well done, but also what could be improved. always a suggestion, sometimes several xie lian can choose from if he wishes.
accompanying him every step of the way, but also leaving xie lian space to experiment the way he likes to do. always, whatever xie lian does and throws into the pot next, is xie lian’s own decision.
and xie lian, progressively, slowly, letting go of his bad cooking habits, being more careful with all his random experimenting. letting hua cheng guide him when they cook together, and remembering his advice when cooking for him.
xie lian even starts to try his hand at baking. it’s a disaster at first. too sugary, too plain, overcooked, undercooked. but, like everything, it gets better.
eventually, it may not be perfect, or the great cuisine hua cheng makes, but it tastes good. after being convinced to taste xie lian’s new dishes (it took, uhm, a while), feng xin and mu qing come more often to the little cottage on taicang mountain to share meals.
hua cheng temporarily tolerates them over these meals, for xie lian’s sake. if they have something to complain about he shoots daggers at them from behind xie lian’s back before they can say anything. but, most of the time, it’s peaceful. just the usual bickering.
xie lian smiles all the while, happy, and that’s all hua cheng could ever want. sometimes he leaves after a kiss and a threatening look to let the three of them reconnect over old xian le recipes. in the evening, he gladly listens when xie lian chooses to tell him all about it.
with time, xie lian heals. allows himself to heal. however, in memory of his mum, he never stops giving his dishes silly names.

im constantly thinking abt hehualian these days it’s like all i can focus on
☕️ Does it bother you that he gave two eyes instead of just one? It seems a lot of problems could have been avoided.
(edit: love how you didn’t actually give a name and I was like ‘oh this is about my boy xiao xingchen’ hope that I was right about that cause I kind of went off)
oh this is one I have very strong feelings about.
no, it does not bother me, and it’s gotten to the point where, while I understand where they come from, the jokes about “Xiao Xingchen can’t do math” kind of bother me. (especially when then it becomes himbo stuff because there’s a word that’s been ruined for me. am a humorless grinch? yes.)
anyway! The point is not about practicality. The point is not about Song Lan being able to see. I’ve written some about this before, but the point is that Xiao Xingchen sees himself, at that point (and because Song Lan says so!) as being the reason that Song Lan’s temple was slaughtered and he lost his sight. He now has an enormous debt, and an enormous amount of guilt for what he’s cost his companion (however you construe their relationship status at that point). As far as Xiao Xingchen is concerned, his actions have cost Song Lan so much; they’ve destroyed his life.
The act of giving him his eyes is both a punishment and a sacrifice and an attempt at reparations, all at the same time. He is the reason Song Lan lost everything; his eyes are the least he can give. The loss of his sight is the least he owes. The giving up of his sight for Song Lan is an offering. This is for you. I am giving this up for you. I am giving this to you.
It’s not just about what he’s giving Song Lan; it’s about what he’s losing.
I imagine Xiao Xingchen is perfectly aware that he could just give Song Lan one eye and leave them both with half their sight! but that wouldn’t be good enough. It wouldn’t be a big enough gesture, a big enough gift, to even begin to make up for the enormity of what his actions cost Song Lan.
I think sometimes what gets lost when people make this joke is that Xiao Xingchen’s choice is symbolic as much as it is literal. It has a wholeness, a totality, that means more than going halfway would.
And isn’t that just so Xiao Xingchen? Giving his whole self to everything he does. He never does half measures. How could he do a literal half measure for the man who he wronged so terribly; the man who he loves so much?
tumblr is apparently rolling out a beta for a new post editor that essentially makes it so there are no longer post “types” (text post, audio post, photo post, etc.), and instead all types of content are better integrated into a single post. pretty neat, right?
…until you read the fine print.
The maximum number of total content blocks allowed in a single post is 250.
i emailed support and asked whether each paragraph counts as a content block. i received this reply:
SO. each paragraph counts as a content block, and i’m only allowed 250 content blocks in one post. the solution provided was to reformat my fics by using shift+enter after every paragraph instead of simply enter. which is already unnecessarily annoying in of itself, but then you come to the second hurdle:
The maximum character length of a single text block is 4096 characters.
so–what?? besides spending my time writing thousands upon thousands of words, i’m expected to copy-paste it and then reformat everything, counting every single one of those words to make sure they fit within the restrictions? or i’m supposed to chop my fics up into multiple parts, even when i don’t want to? how exactly are writers supposed to write on this platform?? as you all know, my style tends to run pretty dialogue-heavy, so i start new paragraphs (and, thus, content blocks!!!) pretty damn often. i did a quick check, and let it snow, at almost 19k, is 550 paragraphs. with this new system, i would be forced to upload it in three (3!!!!!) posts! even my shortest chapter of ego, at 8.8k, is 350 paragraphs, and i’d have to split it in two.
this is honestly a formatting nightmare as a writer, and this is a decision that is liable to drive content creators away from the site and change fandom culture as a whole.
please. if you enjoy reading content on this site and want to continue enjoying content on this site, please don’t let tumblr make things harder for writers! since the tumblr team is supposedly eager to hear what everyone thinks, it would really help if you could message support and share your concern about the issue–maybe we can stop this disaster before it starts.
I know a lot of writeblrs will be affected by the post editor, so if you have the option to participate in the Beta, please reach out to the support team and give your feedback!
If you click on the question mark besides the [BETA] and the “Let us know” it’ll take you straight to the feedback form.
It’s really easy!
They’re actively looking for feedback and opinions, so if enough of us talk about how it’s not working, maybe we can get them to change it!
THeyre actually going to ever listen to us instead of forcing us to find a way to xkit our way around something? *cynical*
I definitely understand your cynicism, but I feel like flooding them with our feedback might have a better chance than complaining about it in our posts!
XKit is amazing and is an absolute godsend, but not everyone uses it. People are going to be limited by the new updates regardless of whatever fix XKit can provide and this hurts the creators on the platform.
The staff won’t know that it’s a problem if we only complain about it on our blogs. But maybe, just maybe, they’ll realize that it’s a problem if a ton of people give them feedback using the official form saying that it’s not working for them.
I don’t know about you, but I’d rather take the small chance over a 0 chance.
I’ve reported a couple things I didn’t like about the Beta and I did get some sort of personalized-ish response from the staff.
I don’t know if they’re listening, but it’s a lot harder to ignore people screaming in your ear compared to people complaining about it under their breaths.
If any part of this beta upsets you, don’t get complacent.
Send your feedback to Tumblr through the Help Center. Tell them why you’re unhappy. It’s not too late.
Here’s hoping! @support
I don’t have the Beta options but I am signal boosting this like heck.
I have also gone into the Help section and sent a Feedback comment on how this limit will be a problem for me and many others.
y’all silver used to be the BACKBONE of this website and now she’s finally able to move forward with her transition… her gfm has been stagnating these last few months so it’d be really cool if people could reblog and get her the funds she needs to reach her goal!!
Hey I’m a struggling trans person in the south that needs help
I need an ASAP car repair that will take me months to afford
Because of the recent weather conditions I have lost a lot of work hours. I live in an 8 person household and only 3 of us have jobs, so nearly all of our money goes into basic survival. Part of my axle and radiator have been damaged, and I can’t get down the street before I overheat. It’ll cost $100 for the radiator and $500 for the axle part. I simply cannot afford this in any timely frame. I use my truck daily for work. I need help.
Anything helps, especially reblogs!
